If you loved any of the Dead Space series of games. Then you’ll drop straight into this one.
This is my review of the Callisto Protocol. I finished the game in about a week. Before i get into the review I will say i was looking forward to this game, as were many since it was made by some of the fellas who did Dead Space.
Ok lets start with the good stuff.
The game has great visuals and sound. The setting and story were good, it of course has Dead Space vibes and for me Chronicles of Riddick ones, mainly those from Escape from Butcher Bay. I did enjoy exploring the game world and collecting audio logs and such.
The combat melee system is very like Escape from Butcher Bay and i mean that in a good way. It will take sometime to master, and master it is key as this game is very unforgiving even on medium setting. I didnt think much of the weapons in the game, they do the job, you have a choice between several but you do need to keep your eyes open to find them. There is also an exploit i found for the weapons and its the same one from Dead Space and Dead Space 2.
Now for the bad….
The game has also of bad design choices with things like bosses that kill you in one hit no matter what, and with the long animations this can drag out. In fact one boss is repeated like 4 times. In fact most enemies can kill you in 3 hits and with the animation you could be waiting awhile to play again.
The plot in the 3rd act falls apart quick and becomes very very generic sci fi and one plot device is repeated about 4 times too which feels like they only did it to make the game longer.
The game has no map so could take path A and miss items and collectibles on path B and never know it. I would mind myself backtracking all the time.
The save system is broken. The game only uses the auto saves and not your manual saves. If you manual save and die your straight back to the last auto save regardless. It reminded me of the save system of Halo 2 on the hardest setting or the checkpoint system in Left for Dead.
There are several stealth sections in the game which at first i didn’t mind since i like stealth games but these sections are repeated about 6 times in a row with hard enemies that will kill you in 2-3 hits.
As for bugs i can only speak for the Xbox version but i heard the computer version was rough but it was addressed in a patch. The only real bugs i found were texture ones with several times i had bad texture pop ins or low textures for my whole time off play till i restarted. Besides that i found issues where after i dodged an attack my character was stuck and couldn’t dodge any more.
Over all the Callisto Protocol isnt a bad game, in fact i would says its good despite its rather big flaws. Its not the next Dead Space thats for sure. I would wait until it went down in price before picking it up.
I hope the further expansions will address the issues because there is something good here and I would like to see what they can do with it.
