We’ve only had this a few days but WOW! My teeth have never felt this clean (apart from going to the dentist)
It took a while to get used to it – water splashed everywhere the first few times – but now we have the knack.
I love using it. The pressure is great. Easy to change the nozzles.
And doesn’t take up too much space.
Highly recommended!
I don’t like how flimsy it is and the flossing handle splits and stains where the plastic hose goes into the rubber housing at the other end from the machine. On asking the vendor how to fix/replace it, the machine was immediatley replaced, although I was told-off for not sending the first one back fast enough when in truth I had never been sent a return label or instructions until that demand – it was just cupboarded.
So the same thing has happened to this handle, but I have used a fine piece of transparent duct tape to stop the split worsening, although the discolouration is still increasing, from mould, horribly enough. So keepig moud at bay meqans a lengthy drying process after each use.
In addition, i was happily using it on my excellent gums until one area started bleeding – turns out it was set too high.
A great device but tricksy to use and maintain.
Was happy with my battery model (the one sold under a thousand brand names here) – but was a few years old and getting a bit tired. New bathroom had shaver socket, waterpik was on offer, so thought I’d treat myself.
I’m glad I upgraded – everything I liked about a water-flosser, but better in every way. Blasts all the crud from between your teeth in mere seconds on the first pass. Waterpik, Sonicare brush and some green listerine and my mouth feels sparkling in a satisfyingly short amount of time.
Things to consider:
1) If you’ve never used a water flosser (or went from a battery one to this mains powered one), your gums won’t thank you initially. Might hurt, might bleed. [Not a dentist] This is normal – there’s normally nothing good pressing on your gums between your teeth. You can dial back the pressure with the lovely analogue dial and put in some warm water – but it will pass, and shortly you’ll be happily blasting your newly toughened gums on max-power with iced water.
2) Where’s this going to go in your bathroom? I hadn’t fully considered this, but got lucky.
Power cord to the unit is ~ 1.3M. Unit needs about 20cm of depth (15 if it’s going to perch) and needs to be ~ 70cm from where your teeth will be (which need to be over a sink).
When I visited my dentist for a check up in November she noticed the same problem and when I told her it was flossing she suggested a water flosser. So I ordered the Water-Pik and tried it. I bought the stand mount with separate handgrip for two reasons. I didn’t want to keep filling the reservoir whilst flossing, and I didn’t want to hold a heavy flosser in my hand whilst flossing. OK, so this is no use for travelling, but it’s great at home. I found it a delight to use. So much that I look forward to using it. I set myself the goal of using it every single night before I go to bed and despite some close calls I have achieved that so far. (If I miss one I’ll catch up in the morning.) The reservoir is large enough for me to do my whole mouth in one setting, and the handgrip is light and very easy to direct. So my purchase logic was correct. I also enjoy the feeling. Every night I floss I can see between two and five visible food particles dislodged. I am sure there are many more smaller particles I can’t see. Since I floss after brushing my teeth (both manual and electric) I can see that brushing isn’t removing those particles. Imagine how many would build up over a six month period.
Anyway, to the point of the story, yesterday I went back for my dental check up and hygienist appointment. As usual I was dreading the usual earbashing. To my intense surprise both my dentist said my mouth was I perfect condition. Healthy gums, no plaque, nothing between the teeth. In dental speak, if you know this, I got 0s for everything. This has never happened before. My hygienist asked me how this happened and I told her about the water flosser. The dentist wasn’t very surprised as she has seen me a few times in between.
Anyway, in summary, if your challenges are similar to mine, I can’t recommend this product highly enough. I confirm this is a genuine private review. I’m posting such a lengthy review to help people who may have similar oral hygiene problems to mine. P.S. my wife also uses it but she has always been a good flosser so never had my challenges.
First time use thoughts: it was a lot easier to use than I initially thought. There was no splashing all over the place because I carefully read the instructions and watched some tutorials. I used it on settings 5-6. I can’t say it had amazing results. After using it I did feel my teeth cleaner but I still used dental floss to make sure everything is removed. And almost nothing came off with the dental floss, so I think the water flosser did its job.
I used it for a second time tonight and it was much easier to navigate. I think I figured it out and it feels nice. Firstly, I flossed my teeth with a dental floss, then water flossed for 1.30 min, then tongue scraped. Up to this point I felt my teeth 80% clean and I didn’t even feel the need to brush but I still used my Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush for 2 mins and then washed with mouthwash. That’s all. It took me around 30 mins to go through the whole regime. I wish I was that diligent when I was younger. Only recently I started with this whole strict regime and I hope it gives some good results. At least to reduce the cavities from 3 to 1 every year.
I’m satisfied with the purchase and I’d recommend it. Buying this model is much better than the portable one because it has a bigger container and it’s enough to go through my whole mouth with just only one filling.
I bought the Pik as a last resort thinking it was very unlikely to make any difference. In the unlikely event that it would save the tooth, I expected it to take at least a couple of weeks.
It arrived yesterday.
Last night, I introduced it to my regime: Interdental brush, brush teeth with Sonicare and Corsodyl toothpaste, use the Pik, rinse with Corsodyl.
I started the Pik on the lowest setting, increasing to find the highest comfortable setting. In my case, 6. All the teeth/gums felt fine but my bad spot bled like mad. Not a few spots but the water leaving my mouth was bloody. I also used the Pocket attachment on the lowest setting, as directed.
I repeated the regime this morning and to my absolute astonishment, NO BLOOD! For quite a few months, I could hold my tongue over the bad bit and suck. Quite s lot of blood would come out and spittle was very bloody. Today, no taste of blood! This is really astonishing.
I will continue as I am and in a week or two try removing the Corsodyl toothpaste and mouthwash. I am confident that I will no longer need them.
I’ll update this review in a month or so.
If you are having problems with bleeding gums or just want avoid these problems, I highly recommend this device!
Good luck!
My wife absolutely hated it first time out, but almost immediately came to consider it an essential part of her dental hygiene regime. If she could take it with us travelling she would, but that isn’t a very practical option (although not impossible if you have room).
The main thing I dislike is the impracticality of the design for routine cleaning of the device. The drain channel for the tip storage rack, which is inconveniently placed behind the water tank, is a little hard to get into even using a cotton bud. The handle and hose are all permanently attached and cannot be disassembled for cleaning when the inevitable black gunk starts forming in inaccessible places.
That issue has just finally been solved because the white plastic hose suddenly developed a tiny hole, my hand was suddenly getting wet, and then split under the water pressure. A replacement handle/hose assembly is available on the Waterpik spares site for 18.67 (incl. p&p) and that is fitted with a plug 2 retaining screws on the bottom of the unit. Yet to decide if that is the way to go.
I assume this was a factory joke or someone stealing the product and replacing something of weight in the box at the factory.
Anyway a lovely Jamaican amazon employee (Shevonne) sorted the issue immediately after having a laugh with me and sent a replacement (not baby wipes) out the next working day.
I also called the company waterpik to inform them and although I spoke to a nice lady in their England office and she said she would pass this on to the manager I have heard nothing back.
Anyway, Re the product itself so far it’s great. Takes a couple of times using to stop spraying the room with water and I suggest using lower pressure settings until you do get used to it.
I genuinely think this helps makes your teeth feel much fresher and cleaner. Almost like a trip to the dental hygienist whenever you want. I fill with water and then a small dash of mouthwash. If your teeth are sensitive then use warm or lukewarm water.
Comes with 2 prong low voltage bathroom sockets but can you get cheap adaptor to work on normal uk 3 prong plugs. (Though watch the water obviously)
Would highly recommend so far. Would have given 5 stars but for the baby wipes posted originally in a sealed waterpik box. (So waterpik rather than amazons fault)
Very powerful product. Just watch out for the baby wipes….
My other half has had a few dental problems which have led to her having to need a dental implant, prior to purchasing this Waterpik she regularly (by which I mean multiple times a day) had to use the small inter-dental brushes to remove food debris from in-between her teeth and often struggled to do so effectively, resulting in sore gums from repeated poking and brushing.
I on the other hand are just too lay to floss…
This product completely changes dental hygiene for the both of us; without being too descriptive, the amount of food debris the product removed in the first use was equal measures amazing and disgusting.
Unfortunately I didn’t read the quick start guide and filled the large water container with ice cold tap water and proceeded to cry like a new born baby when it hit my molars – if you take away one thing from this review, it should be that when you purchase this fantastic product, USE WARM WATER!
We both use this product once per day and the results are great – it encourages me to floss and to an extent, it could be considered fun to use – but let’s not lose context of it being a product to help clean your teeth…
If you haven’t already, go and buy it now!
Warnings- as per others, it hurt when I accidentally directed it in the gap between my gums and top lip so you have to be careful, but the shock very quickly makes one move it! Yes, it is an effective wall and mirror cleaner! Also, NB that you have to replace tips every three to six months though not sure why. Also, do not know the price of replacements.Concentrate, as it is a really powerful cleaner!
Difficulties – using it with the right hand with the machine on the right, as that is the side that the wiring is, I could not see the level of the water, that disappears quite quickly at high speeds, nor could I easily adjust the speed using the dial during cleaning. Had to turn it off at the handle which, personally, I do not find that easy with my personal problems. You both hear and sense that the tank is dry.
Tips – I found that holding my top jaw forward directed the runaway water down into the basin better as I did the backs of the front teeth and pulling the top jaw back helped when doing the fronts of them.
Summary – After two days! Totally addictive. My teeth were so clean that, as soon as I ate anything, my mouth felt awful! As someone who has struggled, depressingly, with trapped food under a crown bridge and between double teeth, the relief of rapidly and seemingly effortlessly flushing it out, instead of flossing conventionally, should be noted!! It can only be understood fully by someone with an armoury of interdental torture tools, flossing Y-shaped things that get trapped, floss that cuts delicate gums as it suddenly flies through the gap under pressure etc!!!!!
Absolutely thrilled, so far and will update if that changes.
OK, you do need to lean over the sink as water comes out of the unit at quite a quick pace and it does splash about when you first use it. After some time I got used to the water flow (which I now use on max) and its easier to control the spray so I don’t drench everything in sight.
I went back to the dentist a week ago and told them I hadn’t flossed the traditional way but used the waterpik instead. I immediately received an odd look and told water flossing was not good enough. Anyway, as soon as she looked inside my mouth she was amazed. My gums are now in superb condition. A couple of tips: take your time, use one container of warm water for each side of your mouth and angle the tip at 45 to your gums. Use every day for the first 4 weeks then every other day.
I wouldn’t live without it now.
