This was purchased to improve our home WiFi connection as our aging Virgin home hub 3 was struggling. Simple to set up, switched the home hub to modem mode and have had excellent results so far.
Bought this to add a quick hardwired extension from an Asus XT9.
Perfect from the start, simply turned it in on, selected “Add a Node” from the Asus app and waited a few minutes while it configured itself.
That’s it, fully up and running!
Plugged it in via Ethernet from my main unit and it quickly switched to ethernet backhaul, giving me full access to all the wireless bands.
Nothing else to say really, signal is incredibly strong thanks to the additional antenna Vs other models and the processor easily keeps up with the 32+ devices connected.
I bought this to replace my Virgin hub 4 with the 1GB package. The hub 4 WiFi signal wasn’t so good and I had to use the virgin booster pods to get usable WiFi speeds in certain areas. As well as that I would have devices being dropped and latency spikes even when using an ethernet cable when playing online games.
The Asus router was a bit of a pain to set up but I think that was mainly the fault of the hub4 as it wasn’t going into modem mode properly. The webpage for the Asus router is a lot faster than virgins and has tons more settings and information, I did have to update the firmware on the Asus router when I recieved it but that was simple enough.
Since having the router the WiFi signal is noticibly stronger and when standing next to the hub the WiFi speed on my s22 ultra increased by around 100mbps. Overall it’s just a lot more stable. The only bad thing I didn’t know before buying was you can’t use virgins extender pods with the router but that’s obviously no fault of Asus. I got it like new from the Amazon warehouse for almost half price so it was a bargain for me.
I only have 4g Internet for various reasons and found the basic 4g router provided by EE very limiting. I was having particular problems streaming my MP4 movies to my TV which were continually buffering. I added the Asus router and connected all my devices to that instead, and hid the 4G SSID. Alexa devices, smart switches and bulbs along with my smart TV and my Emby server now connect to the Asus router and are working so much better now. I found that the connection wizard didn’t really work properly, so did it manually, which worked first time. Wifi signal is great, and the user interface has many, many options, but it is still easy to navigate. Very happy.
This is a great router at a fantastic price point. It’s powerful, easy to set up and has a great user interface (app). If you want the benefit of WiFi 6, and have the devices to do so, don’t hesitate. This router easily provides excellent coverage for our 1200sq/ft apartment which has a number of solid brick walls. My old router used to struggle in the same circumstances. You can spend a lot more on a WiFi 6 router of you want but I struggle to fault this one. Great product!
Works great, good WiFi coverage and WiFi speed. Only slight niggle for me is that the ethernet is not high speed ( my main PC is on a wired connection for speed ), but if you need it for the WiFi then it will be perfect.
Give a great boost to WiFi signal but I did have to get a tech guy to install and set up as it was way to difficult for me. As for the price even the tech guy said for what it does it was a little over priced maybe nearer the 100 mark would of been a better price.
I bought this to replace my previous router Netgear, everything was wrong. Now I I’m happy, easy to use, strong and stable signal to all devices. Overall very good quality
Upgrade this to Merlin firmware and you can use great features such as drop internet connection when it loses VPN connection. The router comes with great features and is really fast.
To set this thing up manually via IP is a pain but was made simple by using the app for the router My specific config was it being used as a booster to my virgin wifi as you have to piggy back and not fully replace the router , weird but works. Also the signal is strong for laptops and weaker for desktops
I’m using this router with BT Full Fibre 900Mbps broadband. I’ve boxed up the BT hub they supplied and stored it away.
I now have a number of WiFi 6 devices at home that prompted me to purchase this router. I have to say it hasn’t disappointed me. It was easy to set up, even for me with my limited IT knowledge. The difference it’s made to my network is a joy to behold, even my partner noticed the difference and she isn’t IT savvy.
I’d recommend this router without hesitation.
Router went down in price by 15 since I bought it which is a good price for this. This replaced my bt smart hub 2. Set up was a doddle. I used the same personalised ssid that I had on my bt router with the same password and all my devices connected. I separated the 5ghz channel which is essential. Macbook air gets 700mb download on a 1ghz connection. The coverage is amazing. Even at the bottom of the garden I don’t lose much speed. Best purchase I made.
I bought this to enable me to make use of the wifi 6 capabilities of my new Microsoft Laptop Surface 4. I’m glad that I did, my laptop now runs with the speed of a Porsche & the smoothness of a Rolls Royce. It has also doubled the range of my previous Asus router.
Only 1 point, the set-up insructions aren’t correct.
Like to echo some of the positive reviews on puttig this router behind the Virigin Media Hub 3 which provides very minimal (about 10 yrd air line) wifi coverage.
For the narrowish. longish and very cramped with walls and staircases (seen by German/Danish eyes) “victorian” houses this router’s wifi barely reaches the back (Kitchen) of the house. A repeater / booster solved that problem. Using the repeater / booster with the Hub 3 alone (setting it back to router mode) does not work — the (“real” or dedicated) router was necessary.
If someone has feedback to this review with info on a router with better reach – would be appreciated.
The current router i am reviewing is i think with typical reach. Actually i do not know.
I bought this router as my main router in an Asus mesh network, and it doesn’t disappoint. Excellent coverage, great software, I can’t fault it. I’m now making full use of my Full fibre connection in all rooms, unlike before.
Great wifi signal easy to setup via the app great value for money really to the point I got two of these and combined them to make a mesh wifi 6 system
I used this to replace a dodgy Virginmedia Hub 3, which is just a modem now. Much better security, plus it allows the installation of NordVPN directly onto the router – so all those other devices I have around the home, from cctv, thermostat, smoke/CO detectors, TVs etc are all VPN protected now.
Had this working for a month now after so many dropouts with Virginmedia superhub 3 which struggled to handle 10 devices. This piece of kit is easy to setup and looks after itself. Has 3 CPUs and memory use is on average 70%. It’s WiFi 6 compatible and you can use as part of a mesh network. Seller had shipped in 24hrs and I confirmed kit was brand new. In total I have 25 devices connected to WiFi and 4 Lan port connections and it hasn’t blinked.
Great router, strong signal and easy to set up. Didn’t fix our problem on it’s own and had to needed to return as we needed a mesh system to reach the other end of the house but the power from this bad boy was great and if you’re just looking for a decent router with a lot of grunt, rather than a whole home system then this’ll do the job.
Works with the Virgin Hub 3 in modem mode. A big thank you to the previous reviewer who mentioned rebooting the Virgin hub after connecting it to this router – this was the step I was missing on my first attempt, and had no internet until I did this. Otherwise, setup very straight forward. Using WPA3 so all the Apple devices in the house stop moaning about our old insecure WiFi which is a plus.
No dropouts at all with this, and is working well with some TP Link powerline adapters (using for older devices, not due to WiFi issues). I set it to our original SSIDs/passwords from the previous router, however this had some unexpected side effects so I would recommend taking the time to just go round every WiFi device, forgetting the old network and then rejoining this new one. The only device that threw a strop was a Nokia 6 Android phone – it took a full factory reset to get it to connect to the new WiFi for the first time (it would save the connection but not connect, no error message either) but now it’s fine.
Get really good download/upload speeds, and only a slight difference in latency between the WiFi and LAN.
The interface in the browser is much better than our old router, lots more info and settings if you like to dabble. Not using the advanced security software as the privacy statement didn’t sit well with me, so can’t rate that.
Hopefully this has future-proofed our network for some time to come! I bought this used and apart from it needing a factory reset, it was a bargain – looks brand new. Haven’t thought about it since it was setup, surely a good sign.
For averaging anywhere from 22 to 28 clients on this device (10 on ethernet, remaining on WiFi) The signal is consistent and excellent, the performance with with AC devices is much better than my previous Netgear R7000P always getting between 95 to 100% of my maximum broadband speed via the 5GHz bandwidth and decent ranges.
The GUI interface is excellent although some of the terms used may be a bit advanced for most people.
BT TV also is working excellently with the multicast routing under IPTV settings, no drops, no error messages.
Features and performance-wise one of the best choices at this price point.
Physically it’s fairly non-descript, which is a bonus if you’re not into the flashing lights and spider looking routers.
Definite upgrade over the VM superhub 3, wifi performance has improved from the office which is 5-10m away through 3 walls.
AI mesh is a nice feature, if you don’t have enough coverage just get another to create a mesh or repurpose another Asus router which supports the feature.
Brought ASUS RT-AX58U. Setup in about 10 mins – ISP is vodafone gigafast 500mb. blazing speeds now on the wifi. The router vodafone provide is very slow compared to this. As well as the slow wifi we were unable to play call of duty on more than one device in the house, now works perefectly. Very impressed with all the extra features as well.
I’ve been with Virgin Media on and off over the last 10 years and am always massively disappointed how bad their wi-fi routers are.
I finally took the plunge and bought this Asus router to resolve the problem and improve my wi-fi. It was as simple as putting the SuperHub into ‘modem’ mode and attaching the Asus router.
Set-up was extremely quick and easy – it took me less than 10 minutes from start to finish to unbox it, hook it up and configure it.
The GUI on the Asus router is good and intuitive; I didn’t even need to look at the instructions other than to find out what the default IP address and admin passwords were.
My wi-fi is now much faster and the range is massively improved.
I’m very happy with this unit and it wasn’t expensive either.
Got this because my Virgin router was horrendous. Now my WiFi is absolutely perfect in every room of the house. I would have bought one of these years ago had I known the difference it can make. 100% recommend.
This router sits in my attic and blasts 4 bars of WiFi6 across my entire house. I’m in a 4 bed detached (no internal brick walls) and this gives me full coverage.
Software setup is a piece of cake with wizards, and it connects easily to my existing BT router with a single ether net cable.
A moumental upgrade from the original superhub provided by the folks at virgin media. I actually get the speed (and sometimes more) than i pay for! very easy to use and was up and running in 10 minutes or so.
Unfortunately for me specifically, the signal strength was not vastly improved as i envisaged it would be. As a result of this, I am thinking of a AI mesh system or maybe even upgrading to a higher end model in the asus range!
But would certainly recommend for those with a standard broadband router to upgrade (especially virgin media!)
This router works great and provides better coverage to the whole house. I have a virgin super hub 3 and had consistent drops outs in certain areas of the house. We have multiple devices running simultaneous and knew it was a bandwidth issue and the poor signal coverage from the hub as our speed (200mb) is sufficient for our needs. Installation of the device is relatively straightforward, even for non-techies. Put the virgin hub in modem mode and connect the WAN from the hub to the router (use the top 1 of the 4 wan ports on the hub). Set up the wifi (easier via desktop) and you’re pretty much good to go. Has load of features on the router interface, which is quite useful. I now get 200mb in the attic via Wifi (up from 50mb) and no drop outs in the conservatory. The AI protection features are nice but through a third party. Not keen on that at all, native features are fine but transmission of data to other parties to utilise certain features is the only drawback. Really happy with the router and would have been reluctant to purchase at the RRP price so good value in the cyber deals.
Comes neatly packed with both eu and U.K. plug attachments which is nice. The antennas aren’t removable from the back which couldve been a nice feature.
The device feels solid and well built, small and compact the materials doesn’t feel cheap which is nice for a 200 product.
Compared to the Virgin super hub 3, the signal quality is much better with significant improvement to connection integrity without dropping out within a reasonable range. With The super hub 3 I often have buffer screen and sometimes freezes in connection, even dropping out within a reasonable range.
Compared to super hub 3, the range improves by about 20% but connection is flaky on the outer edges as expected, but I would’ve expected more for 200.
Data carried across connection improved as well, though I’d say can be better.
Setting it up was alittle bothersome without very clear instructions. Basically you have to set Virgin super hub to modem mode, then attach WAN to WAN on super hub and the ASUS router. Turn ASUS router on and set it up via app or Ethernet (the app didn’t work for me). Turn both super hub and router off, then turn router on and wait for 3 minutes for initialisation then Virgin super hub back on. Then it should work.
It’s a hassle if you don’t know the particular order and had me scratching my head for about an hour frustrated as any different order would result in failure to setup.
Overall it’s a nice device, but I expected more from it due to the hefty price tag; the range can be better and maybe a larger data transfer rate, also better setup procedure.
I would recommend getting this only on a decent discount or if you have money to throw
Very neat small router. Absolutely no issues in setting up and use.
Not sure about being tied into a third party for some of the functions particularly as ASUS seem to decline any responsibility for using them.
Needed to replace the VM hub3 because the wifi was spotty and getting lag when playing on mobile games. This was easy to install and set up (took less than 30mins). Later on I added an external HDD to it. That took some tinkering with the settings and a bit of online research but its working now.
Interface is easy to use.
Good product.
After years of accepting the limitations of the ISP-provided hubs/routers/modems, and an unsatisfactory try of powerline products, I decided to get a router.
The setup was simple, just logged onto my ISP router and changed to modem mode then connected the RT-AX58U. Followed the easy quick start guide and connected to the router in a browser. Everything is straight forward and self explanatory.
The wi-fi signal reaches all corners of an extended semi-detached house and I haven’t placed the router particularly centrally (in fact it’s in a cabinet with metal mesh doors.) I only have about a dozen devices connected at the moment, including phones, laptops, consoles, and TV. There has been no lag on anything since installation, a change from waiting for a page to load on my phone.
Some big pluses about this router: Manage device access and times they are allowed to connect; in-built online protection; guest network; wifi6; the phone app is useful for a quick glance at the settings and usage. There are many more that I am yet to try out but I’ll be making the most of the features.
All in all, happy with this addition to my home network.
I bought this as the broadband router wifi that I had through my provider kept on crashing out. The Asus router is a great product, the features in the software are very good, particularly like the parental control and malware software detection. Being able to restrict adult and other specific types of content to specific devices in your home is great if you have kids. In the past I have always been underwhelmed by this kind of support in routers.
The wifi 6 performance is excellent in both coverage and speed (reasonably large home), I have about 30 devices across both 2.4ghz and 5ghz, and it has been very stable (Cameras, Alexas, Chromecasts, Laptops, Phones, Android TV boxes etc). I use with 300mbps broadband and there is no contention that I can see. Highly recommend.
Had been looking to improve my home’s Wi-Fi signal from EE’s supplied Super Hub router. While EE doesn’t provide a simple modem mode like Virgin Media routers, after a bit of effort I managed to get the ASUS RT-AX58U router working with it. So far I’m extremely pleased by it; a definite stronger signal all round my house, and my 802.11AX compatible devices have been finally been able to stretch their legs. Especially impressed with connection to the Oculus Quest 2, as I’m finally able to use Virtual Desktop streaming from my PC without any stutters at all. To top it off, the device is quite small and understated compared to some other ‘gaming’ routers, which is something I consider another positive!
This is the best router I have owned for ease of set up but being WiFi 6 makes it the fastest. Linked with the not so super hub from Virgin works great. (Sorry Virgin as you provide fast WiFi) foot print is small for a extremely fast router as my last router was a gaming one and twice as big. You do need devices that are WiFi 6 ready and you will see the difference.
I am on virgin media, i have the hub 3 i needed a router that would provide better signal in the aveage size semi-detached 2 bed house we have thick brick wall not plasterboard the hub 3 could’nt provide stable signal. Now this asus RT-AC85P probley has slightly better range than the hub 3 so i was slightly disappointed with that fact however you can tell that the beam forming technology in this router is doing its job because even though the signal strength drops in the same places (not by as much) as the hub 3 it suddenly picks up and the speeds are by far better. The hub 3 would lose connection and speeds would of been diabolical overall i recommend as an upgrade it does do a better job than the hub 3 but if you have a bigger budget go for the next moddel up just for the extra range, and maybe wifi 6.
After struggling with a virgin superhub 3 for a while. I decided I needed to invest in something that could handle more than a few clients connecting at once (about 2 phones, a pc, laptop, and multiple smart home devices). Turning the hub into modem only mode, and letting this handle the routing. All of a sudden I am managing to get the speed of my fibre at 30m away over wi-fi; 110Mb down, and 10Mb up. With only an additional 1ms on the ping in comparison to ethernet. The only downside is atm there’s only my pc with AX connectivity, but I wanted to future proof. If you’re quite happy with AC / WiFi 5, or you aren’t sure what that means, maybe save yourself 50 and go for the cheaper Asus rt ac68 router, which I’m sure will perform exactly the same for most people
I had to bring back my aging ASUS RN66U in our new house but after adding a video doorbell it was showing itself to be a bit past it!
I was hesitant to jump into wifi6 as we dont have anything to test that side of things but otherwise this router has been brilliant for the last few months, zero issues and a familiar asus interface made it a breeze to set it all up.
So far we havent used the advanced features, but it has a wider wifi coverage than the previous one and has been rock solid which is what matter the most, especially in recent months since I have to remote onto work machines from home to perform my day job.
ASUS RT-AC51U — So I was looking for a router that would allow me to connect my mobile phone as a modem — My unlimited data to provide unlimited data to my laptop — TV — etc — All in my holiday home caravan! And this is it! Full WIFI from my phone; all router functions including wired connections [Amazon prime — NowTV — Netflix] all in the caravan. Even got a proper laptop connections and a guest WIFI on both 2.4 and 5Ghz.. All for 35 quid! So, small scale occasional router that can take your unlimited data phone connection via USB to create a proper WIFI network for the caravan or other small home situation. Just smashing! Thank you ASUS.
I’m yet another victim of the notorious Virgin Media Superhub, which is mentioned a few times in the reviews of this product. Like the other victims, I too struggled with inconsistent download and browsing speeds and poor WiFi coverage from the Superhub and also struggled with Virgin Media themselves over the phone; “Yes, I’ve rebooted it and yes, I’ve checked the cables and no – it’s definitely not a problem with two laptops, two smartphones, a tablet and a Chromecast in my house”, but they refused to accept that it was down to a problem with the Superhub.
I recently received a Synology DS216J NAS box as a birthday present and received a further kick in the teeth from the Superhub when I discovered that the transfer speeds between my laptop over WiFi to the NAS were trickling along at a pathetically slow 1.7Mb/s; this wasn’t a great prospect when I was looking to transfer several gigabytes worth of files to it, so turned my efforts towards finding ways to resolve my networking woes. After a bit of googling, I discovered to my surprise that the Superhub can be wing-clipped and turned into a lowly modem through its configuration page (Something Virgin Media never thought of mentioning to me) and can subsequently have another router connected to it to take on the duties of pumping WiFi throughout the house, so it was with that thought that I decided to look for a sufficiently zippy router to connect to it.
The problem when searching for things like routers is that there are simply thousands of ones available to buy and it can feel like wading through treacle trying to find a good one. Having gone through several of the things in my lifetime, I looked at reviews and settled on getting this Asus one after finding to my delight that it was nearly half-price on Amazon Prime. One of the buying factors was its dual 2.4 and 5GHz SSID’s as I’d been having problems with only being able to choose one or the other with the (not so) Superhub, which was a problem as my wireless printer only supports 2.4GHz and was therefore causing everything else in the house to be dragged down to the lower throughput rate because of this, which wasn’t much fun as it really seemed to adversely affect my laptop’s AC-7260 WiFi card which is much happier when running on the 5GHz band.
When the router arrived I relished the challenge of connecting it to the Superhub, the Synology NAS box and my various other bits of kit. I’ve often found routers in the past to be unhelpful, vague things which used acronyms for everything and be just about as clear as mud when it came to setting them up, but this is thankfully not the case with the Asus RT-AC51U. Once I’d stripped the superhub of its WiFi abilities and set it into it’s modem-only mode, I connected everything up and fired my Asus router up. From there it was a simple case of opening the WiFi manager in Windows 10 on my laptop and opening a web browser, which promply brought me straight to the configuration page for the router and was displaying a set up wizard. Nice!
Setting the Asus RT-AC51U up couldn’t be any easier. Once you’ve set the admin username and password up it takes you straight to a page where you can set the names and passwords for the 2.5GHz and 5GHz SSID’s. I decided to name them in a method which makes it clear which one is which and once I’d done that it took me straight to the main config page for the router – so no faffing around with IP addresses, which made for a pleasant change. When it comes to the configuration page for this router, this makes other routers ones look positively pathetic; it’s well laid out, easy to read and absolutely packed with all sorts of features – many of which I wasn’t expecting to find. I didn’t even have to look at any instructions on how to change the default gateway IP or set a static IP for my Synology NAS as the user interface is wonderfully intuitive and simple to use.
The only bit that caused me to scratch my head was when it came to setting up my wireless printer as I couldn’t get my laptop to see it because it was connected to the 5GHz SSID. Having noticed that the router can act as a print server however, I connected the printer to the USB port on the router and checked the ‘USB devices’ section on the config page where lo and behold it had detected the printer make and model! Impressive. It still didn’t explain how I was going to get my laptop to talk to the printer however, so it was with a squeak of delight that I discovered that the router has links to applications where I found a printer driver app that downloaded and correctly set up the printer on my laptop! By this point I was already singing the router’s praises – never before have a seen such a well-featured, smart and intelligently designed bit of networking kit.
Even more impressive is that fact that the transfer speeds to my NAS are now reaching 12mb/s (that’s a 100% increase over the Superhub!) over WiFi and after conducting a broadband speed test I’m now getting the maximum download and upload speeds via my 75-meg connection. The signal is stronger throughout the house too and there’s not been a single drop-out or problem with the connection speeds.
This is without doubt the best router I’ve ever used and would absolutely recommend it without a second thought. Well done, Asus!
>>> Update 13/03/2017
I’ve been using the router for nearly a month now and have not experienced any problems with it whatsoever. The WiFi connection from it has been steady, fast and 100% reliable for the whole time. I would have had to reset the Virgin Superhub at least twice by this point in order to keep it running properly.
I remain really impressed with this router and would give it six stars if I could!
I bought this for three reasons. Firstly, because of the USB port, where my idea was to put an external SSD with all my music to stream over the network and free up disk space on my laptop, and second and thirdly because of the very high star rating and low price.
Well, the router works. Its pretty easy to set up and does what its supposed to do.
The range on 2.4Ghz is almost as good as the TPLink its replacing. The 5Ghz, that I never tested on the TPLink, is pretty weak, and invisible through a couple of walls. Though, from what Ive read, this sounds normal.
The USB works, though I found it a little more laborious than Id hoped, so I have an SSD attached to the USB port with my music on it.
There are lots of other “stuff” on it that I have no idea how to use.
All in all, it seems like a nice little router. With regards to the TPLink (which has been stuffed in the cupboard so long I had no idea it has TWO USB ports!), I have the impression Ive changed the proverbial 6 for 5.8, but I feel the ASUS is a good first-time buy for anyone on a small budget who doesnt need massive wifi coverage.
Great considering the price. I used this in combination with my virginmedia superhub (in modem mode) and have been quite pleasantly surprised with the performance. I can get the full 70Mb/s through the 5GHz wifi channel. As expected the range isn’t fantastic, and with me being in an older building uptairs isn’t well covered by 5GHz, the 2.4GHz channel takes over at that point though.
I wouldn’t say that the router menu is easy to use, with many options being hidden in tabs as well as submenus, but nearly all the configuration options I would need (port forwarding/dmz, manual routing tables) are fairly accessible. It also has an additional easy to use menu for WoL (I haven’t yet tested if this works).
It is worth saying that the basic setup is very easy, if you don’t want port forwarding etc and just want to setup the wireless network.
Overall, for the price this is great, so long as your expectations in terms of speed, range and penetration are realistic.
