This was a replacement as I cut the cord by accident whilst cutting the trees, perfect tool
Perfect for easy use, reasonably light , hence 4 star, good price.
Brilliant bit of Bosch kit. Extra length blades enables me to do my Taxus trees in one go. Also allows the hedge to be cut in a oner without having to go around to the other side.
Everything positive no negs
Good Hedge Trimmer – Just be Careful Not to Cut the Electric cable
Works very well, and slices through surprisingly thick stalks. It’s light and well balanced, and has a long enough blade to provide very useful reach. It’s good for straight rectangular hedging but also light and manoeuvrable enough to deal with subtle rounding of individual shrubs.
Very pleased with this – easy to use and lightweigh
Much lighter than my previous cutters which makes it easier on the arms and back. Cuts well. Not yet used to it having slightly different controls!
Bought this a while ago and only just started using. Lightweight and easy to use. Has 2 “handles ” that need to be pressed for it to work- a good safety feature. Recommended.
blade a lot thinner than my old bosch. registration a nightmare.
added a cable connector to avoid having cable wrapped around cutter. flimsy blade gaurd
Using it at waist height or lower, it’s fine but on higher bushes, it is not so manoeuvrable or light.
It is good value for the money. Very efficient. Cuts wells. Delivered promptly. Packed well. The only thing I am having a problem with is the guarantee. I have taken a photo of the small pack on the hedge trimmer and input the number but for some reason it does not recognise it. So will get in touch with customer services once the Christmas holiday is over. It is an excellent hedge trimmer.
This was a replacement for a much older version which had absolutely served its time. It is so much lighter than the one it replaces and does a great job. The fact that the old one lasted so well is the reason I re-purchased Bosch and I have no regrets about the new one so far!
I found this heavier than I expected though i tried heavier in shops. This to me is a tad under powered . Needs to be gutsier. My privet hedge took some doing. I bought longer to cope with width if hedge . The two handle push to start though there for safety can also be annoying as the moment you regrip it’s off..smaller hedges for trimming up this is fine but I suggest a better powered unit for those with big hedges
Love this hedge trimmer, but not very happy with the condition the box was in when delivered. I have seen several reviews saying box was damaged on delivery, so maybe Bosch could think about using sturdier boxes in future, or Amazon could possibly send them out boxed in strong cardboard.
I checked to make sure the hedge trimmer hadn’t been tampered with before deciding to keep it.
The trimmer is easy to use and goes through the hedge like a knife through soft butter. Excellent.
The product itself is great, it’s just a shame it arrived with the box in very poor condition, not to mention sellotaped together and not inside an outer packaging box, just the basic box that the item comes in.
Cuts beautifully but be warned: It is not light.
It weighs about the same as our battery powered trimmer so both can be tiring when reaching up high. Nevertheless the new one is a much better trimmer.
My gardener used it for cutting about 15 bushes which had grown almost twice their normal size because of all the rain. He liked the closeness of the blades, the length of the cutting blade and everything about this Bosch cutter. In fact I was persuaded to purchase another of the same for my neighbour who is equally delighted.
The hedge trimmer looks good, is sharp for cutting smaller branches etc
My dislike is the aukward operation when cutting. The grip at the front of the cutter is a good idea but the trigger grip at the rear of the trimmer is very uncomfortable. Holding in the grip at the front and rear is very aukward when also cutting a hedge from the side.Having to sweep the hedgecutter vertically is uncomfortable to say the least.
I took a gamble buying this. After reading the reviews I decided to give it a go, so glad I did as I was fed up with using shears and it taking ages to complete the job. I suppose some may find this a bit heavy, I think it’s ok. I found it easy to use and it whizzed through my hedge with ease. Even cutting through thickish branches.
The fact I got it on prime day was even bettervery happy.
I bought this exact model back in 2013 and have now purchased another identical model as I was so pleased with the first.
The motor burnt out on the old one but i have no complaints after eight years.
It does exactly what it says on the box.
I have over 100 metres of hedge to trim and this has sufficient power to cut through them all two or three time per year.
And at this price, very good value.
I find the petrol ones are far too heavy for sustained use so prefer this electric one. Just need to be careful not to slice through the cable!
The Bosch Product 0600847B70 AHS 50-16 I purchased form Amazon, met more than my expectations. Although I wass looking for the 18″ long blade which was out of stock at the time. the hedge cutter was very fast, sharp and easy to manage and manouevre – not to heavy. Cord was not too long and could have been long as a lawnmower lead, so i had to use an extension lead to reach the hedges further away. But overall I was happy with the product, cuts neat, faster than using shears and less effort.
Simple to use, light weight yet powerful and with very good safety design. However it is louder than previous models and at 100db you will be wanting to wear ear defenders when using it.
… there were bits broken off both ends of the blade cover. The box was slightly damaged too. After I registered (with difficulty) the guarantee, Bosch refused to send me a new cover, telling me to contact Amazon, who, of course wanted me to send the whole machine back. I declined.
Apart from that, the trimmer does its job well. It is slightly heavier than I expected, though.
I bought this mainly to speed up my hedge triming ritual. I’ve been using good old manual hedge shears which I do like however the process can be a bit slow. These Bosch hedge trimmers have saved my life. My hedges have never looked as good and were completed in a quarter of the time. The trimmer isnt the lightest but it seems very capable of doing what I need of it. My hedges are mainly Berberis so it copes very well with these and also I found that my hands weren’t as scratched with the spines of the hedge. I’m very pleased with my purchase.
Bosch is a good make, with a reputation to uphold. Therefore I trust them to make products to a high standard. In this I was not disappointed. The trimmer has a nice long blade, is easy to use and has a 3 year manufactures guarantee. It is quite heavy in the hands, and anyone with a lighter build will not be conformable using this for hours on end. But nothing a tea-break or two won’t fix. My one disappointment was having bought this under Prime Membership, I got an e-mail telling me it was out for delivery. Only to have that revoked. The trimmer finally arrived late. What is the point of Prime, if Amazon had over goods to clowns like Hermes.
Fine for branches up to about 12mm anything over that you need to push a bit on but will get through anything up to around 18mm without too much trouble. Great for quick trims of new growth
Great replacement for our old hedge cutter which decided to disintegrate at the beginning of the year. This Bosch is a little shorter in the blade, but much lighter, easier to manoeuvre, and a lot sharper. Getting old means that the lightness is a bonus, making hedge cutting less of a hard task. Rid recommend this to anyone with a normal size garden, perhaps not if you have a huge garden with miles of hedge!
Not as light as I expected, arrived in rather battered looking box and I discovered on opening the plastic blade sheath/cover inside was cracked, faulty and broken. I haven’t used the trimmers as yet so am unable to review their performance. However I was disappointed upon the shabby appearance of the packaging and the broken (poor quality), plastic blade guard inside. I do not intend to take the time consuming task of returning the whole item. However I would have appreciated a procedure that allowed a replacement faulty part , such as the blade cover to be replaced. All that said, on contacting Amazon customer services and outlining my complaint, they generously processed for me a 25 refund as recompense for the breakage. So a fair resolution and no complaint.
I really like it. Easy to use and importantly not too heavy. So it’s good for us women. !!.. Too many power tools are heavy and make it impossible for women to use. Yes this was a good buy.
As expected, does the job & can handle 15mm branch stems. Not light weight, when cutting 10 feet hedges can be tiring & not very manoverable. Next time would consider battery option, and most light weight option. Overall for limited usage, a good solid machine.
Bosch AHS 50-16 Electric Hedge Cutter
Bought this to replace a similar, but battery-powered, model (AHS 3 Accu) that had served me well for around 20 years. This corded model is so powerful and easy to use, that I didn’t want to stop! A hedge that used to take weeks to trim now takes a day.
My only very minor criticism would be: the cord could do with some sort of catch or guard, to ensure it doesn’t slip onto the blade.
I have no problem with the product but the delivery was a shambles. The message was it was left with a neighbour. That was an outright lie. It was left on the doorstep in full view of the road and could easily have been stole
bought recently to replace another hedgecutter which only lasted 2 years , another well known brand, very dis
appointed .already own two other bosch products ,so confident this will be as good ,with good product backup and 3 year warranty when registered . i wished i bought it in the first place.
The ideal trimmer for medium sized gardens when you are bored of the battery life running out too fast on your rechargable version! As you’d expect Bosch make a sturdy and excellent trimmer and it gets through pretty much everything. My only criticism is that the cable does flap around and I’m terrified of cutting through it (inevitable!) and I wish they could design the system so it was less easy to do so – maybe some kind of light body harness that keeps it out of the way?
Blade is quite long so it means you cover more hedge with each cut which minimises time spent stretching out your arms. That’s logical but I hadn’t considered blade length when I bought it. The other plus is how sharp new blades are like cutting through butter and the machine is more than powerful enough for a suburban garden and importantly light enough for a relative oldie like me (70).
My cutting is used on a variety of shrubs, pitsom porum, climbing hydrangea, ceonathis, and various hedges – but no beech.
This choice was as replacement for my heavy duty Bosch AHS480-24T, weighing in at 4.1kg, which had failed after 12 years heavy use. I was tempted to. go for the AHS60-26 at 129-99 & weighing in at 3.6kg, but chose the lightweight above at 2.7kg. The reasoning is that we have some 200m of large hedging – hawthorn, beech & privet; but at age 83, I find in increasingly hard to handle the heavier cutters. The decision was influenced by another correspondent who sagely pointed out that the cutter cost equals a single visit from a professional gardener. We have such a proven service, better than I can cut, but my reasoning was that if I can continue for 2 or 3 more years before I give up it is a healthier option! So how is the AHS50-16 ? A slightly longer blade, much lighter @ 2.7kg; a wickedly sharp set of cutters; an integral cable -i.e. not detachable. (I still need a long extension lead to access the remotest corners of the hedging). The ‘test run’ was on a 2m spherical holly bush, covered in soft new growth. Very easy. The next test will be whether I can maintain sufficient finger pressure to use the cutter as a milling machine when cutting the long straight hedge tops. Hence 4 stars for a start.
Addendum: Have now (end September) cut all hedging ready for the Winter. Partly due to the extraordinary dry Summer, the hedge growth was not as rampant as in previous years. The cutter has done the job well, although unlike it’s powerful heavy predecessor, it struggles somewhat with thicker stems. Nevertheless, it has proved the point, so I think it deserves the fifth star.
A superb machine and very simple to use. Delivery was prompt too. Also, it’s a refreshing change to encounter something made in Europe (in this case Hungary and quality-checked in Germany) instead of being knocked-out ’19-to-the-dozen’ in a far-flung part of Asia or Indonesia. As a consequence it is built like a tank and feels reassuringly solid and well-constructed.
This is the first electric hedge trimmer I have used since I “cut my teeth” gardening-wise on my Dad’s long-gone cordless trimmer when I was a teenager (I’m now 46) and, now that I have rediscovered the knack/technique of using this, I find it to be a doddle and it gives superb results. In fact, the results were all too superb as I was slightly disorientated (due to tiredness) at the end of proceedings and managed to cut through the cord when I went slightly off-balance, but this is my own stupid fault and no reflection whatsoever on the machine. I had a spare mains connector in the shed, so I was quickly able to repair the severed cord and I am now back in business and will be much more careful from now on!
There’s a lesson here for all of us – when you start to feel tired, STOP WORK. I didn’t. Fortunately the RCD cut-out safety device I always use prevented any accident but be careful, people.
Prior to this machine arriving, I was having to use an old, worn-out pair of hand shears to prune my tiny hedge and medium-sized shrubs but now I can do the job much more efficiently and effectively in a tiny fraction of the time.
If you’re umm-ing and arr-ing over whether or not to invest in one of these machines, do not hestitate. Follow the instructions, use your common-sense, be careful and you will be fine with this.
Highly recommended.
This is the most AMAZING hedge trimmer we have ever used! We have a very large garden with high hedges front and back. Its always been a real pain to cut them and they never had the square look that others had managed. We had decided it must have been because other people use petrol chainsaws. We had one cordless set from bosch that would jam on anything twig like and a black and decker set that were not very impressive and broke. My dad has a Ryobi thing on a pole which is not brilliant and heavy to use, it also breaks down regularly. We eventually decided we would have to go electric again. SO GLAD we did! I would recommend the extra length of this set to the other Bosch available as it covers more area.
This is a great time saving tool for any one with hedges and bushes. It cuts through ours like butter. When you do hit a thicker branch that its not too keen to cut in one go, I tend to just keep going at it in waves and it eventually cuts it. I’m actually very impressed at how strong this is for the price we paid for it. We tried the battery version of this and it ran out far too quickly for what was needed. I’d rather be sitting in my garden, rather than waiting around for batteries to charge and having to do it by hand whilst I wait. With this you don’t need to worry about charging times, just make sure you’ve got an extension lead (the attached lead is not very long) and you’re all set! The benefit, is that if it does struggle it has all the power it needs on tap, to tackle any hurdles.
The blade includes a fiddly cover that I guess protects it or rather you from it. I’ll be honest, I’m probably going to throw it away, its a bit of a hassle trying to put it back on and mine will be staying in the shed when not in use and there a far sharper objects in there than this, so it’s a bit silly in my view. The blade it self is a perfect length, just long enough to be able to cut horizontally and vertically in just a few strides. For me, theres no need for a step ladder or squeezing myself onto the other side of the hedge, as this is the perfect length.
I have found that holding it up after a while, it does tend to feel quite heavy but I would think most things would, if you held it above shoulder height for long. For under 40 this is a true bargain and I would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family (although, they’ll likely just borrow mine now). Even at the full RRP this is still a good purchase.
Edit: Having cut through the cable, it would be nice if the cable were replaceable. I have fixed and all is well, but on reflection it would be nice to be able to replace the cable should I cut it more often. What I may do, is just replace the cable myself, but it would have been a nice feature to have. Still a 5 Star and excellent value cutter.
The first impression is of a serious well made piece of equipment! It is not lightweight, which helps when trimming bushes, and is very easy to use. Before you can operate it, both your hands must be in place to activate the two switches that must be pressed. In other words, if you slipped go with one hand accidentally then the blades would stop – an essential safety feature.
My one small gripe was that the plastic sheath which covers the blades in storage was damaged at the inner end (see diagram). Amazon offered to replace the entire machine, but as the box had been badly bashed about in transit it wouldn’t have been suitable for returning it, and I told them I thought it wasn’t cost effective – they gave me a small refund and I can organise a replacement myself – top marks to Amazon too!
Purchased to replace my 10-year old Black & Decker, with same 60cms blade size. Described as ‘lightweight’ but I found it a little heavier than its predecessor. (This could of course be an indication good quality components have been used.) However, it does cut well and in this aspect it considerable better.
It’s a pity that the blade cover appears to have been designed by either a comedian or a madman, as in my case it is almost impossible to re-fit after use. Fortunately I kept the old one, so this has been consigned to the bin. How hard can it be to provide something that slides onto the blade easily??
I would have been happy to give this hedgetrimmer 5 stars for its cutting ability, but the weight and the ridiculous blade cover justifies an overall 4 stars.
This is very quiet, sure and strong. It’s a little awkward with the handle angle and caused small wrist fatigue after half hour constant use, but having a break at short intervals is sensible practice. Vibration is minimal and with a file i can see light sharpening is easy. Recently i have veered away from Bosch products as i have negative experience with other tools. This item restores my faith somewhat in Bosch, at least for the hedge trimmer it does. i would recommend this product over others as i have broken seven opther brands in the last six years. This is not very old yet, but already i can see it will last longer than them and it is around the same cost. I will post a review update in a year to confirm this
In my list of favourite things to do, trimming the hedges is not one of them, especially when I had a clunky old trimmer that kept cutting out. I replaced it with the reasonably priced ‘Bosch AHS 50-16 Electric Hedgecutter’, a device that gets the job done very well. As a trimmer it not quite as powerful as my old machine, there if no chance that the ‘Bosch’ will cut through thicker branches, it is a leaf only device. For most situations this is fine, but it did mean getting out my pruners when I wanted to cut back the hedges a lot this spring.
Criticising a hedge cutter because it merely trims and not cuts is fair, but a little harsh. As a trimmer it is excellent. It is lightweight and easy to handle with a decent length power cable allowing me to work around my entire front garden. The blade protector that comes with the ‘Bosch’ is also a very good touch as it means the blades should last a little longer before furring up and needing to be oiled. At the price point the ‘Bosch’ hedge cutters are available for, they represent very good value. However, on occasion I would have liked a little more grunt from them.
I used this for the first time the other day. It does what it’s meant to. The only reason I’ve given it 4 stars is because the blade still wasn’t long enough to go from one side of my hedge to the other, which is my fault for not checking that fact. My hedge has a huge drop one side and so I can only cut it from the higher side, so I should have made sure. It is quieter than my old hedge cutter and it is also lighter. Nice long flex. Packaging slightly damaged but hadn’t effected the hedge trimmer.
We have a large, tall hedge with a holly bush in it’s midst, which we used to tackle with long shears and secateurs and it took hours.
I had it done in a couple of hours with this lovely machine. It tackles all but the very thickest of branches with ease. It is light and I didn’t have to let my arms rest very often.
I’m glad I went for a model with the long blade so that much of the work can be done standing on the ground.
You have to be careful. Read the instructions carefully to learn how to keep the cable safely away from the blade. The instructions show some kind of weight that hangs on the cable to keep it out of the way of the blade but it does not come with the trimmer. Maybe it’s a DIY accessory?
Needless to say, several other shrubs in the garden got the treatment too..
I researched this trimmer widely on the internet and in Which? through my local library and it does very well. I have also used Bosch products extensively in my household. So it came as no surprise that it looks and works well out of the box. The trimming season has not really started yet, so I cannot comment on longer term use, but expect it to do very well. For its length it is light and easy to handle. My one complaint concerns the box used for postage. This is simply the display box as used in stores, with no added protection either inside or outside. The hedgecutter had come adrift inside the box and had obviously been thrashing about. The box was torn over a good length of its side. Although no damage was detectable to the hedgecutter, I really think that suppliers should improve the packing of this fine garden implement for despatch.
Product arrived within specified time period. Other reviewers have commented on the packaging. I found it well packaged and the packaging was undamaged. There was no damage to the blade.
In spite of having a longer than usual blade it is reasonably light. For safety reasons it requires a two handed operation which I think is common to all hedge trimmers. It is noticeably quieter than my previous trimmer (not a Bosch) and cuts well. It does not cut thick stems – for that you would need its big brother but for the size of stems for which it is designed, it works very well and is not too heavy to handle. Length of cable is quite adequate. If it were significantly shorter, it would be too short but if it were much longer then it it be too long to coil round the handle when not in use. Hence overall no hesitation in giving five stars.
