I wanted to be able to scan documents quickly and easily without any fuss, to help reduce paperwork in the house. I’m very pleased with how easy this item is right out of the box: plug a memory stick in the back, press the scan-to-memory-stick button and the pages shoot through the machine, scanning both sides in one sweep and only retaining the ones with any data on them, in full colour. Just as simple as I needed.

I didn’t order the WiFi version as in my experience WiFi printers are hopeless with their connections over time. I haven’t tried setting up drivers etc on my laptop to use the scanner, as I rather like that it just lives in a cupboard with a cheap memory stick and needs no set up or connections.

Recommended for quick accurate document scanning. Not really suitable for photographs etc as the quality isn’t quite at that level.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersSub-par, slow to respond LCD touchscreen with config menu that’s missing date format localization aside, this is the best portable scanner available.

There is a cheaper USB-only touchscreen-less model available if you can get hold of it (ADS-1200).

Anyway, this is as good as it gets on the hardware side, but the provided software, “Brother iPrint & Scan” is a bit flawed and causes some irritation in certain situations. For instance, it has several document size profiles: Letter, A4, etc. which are fine when you are scanning documents of those sizes. However, there’s also an Auto size for all the non-standard sized documents, which is great, as long as the document isn’t too long.

Why is this an issue? Because this scanner is supposed to be able to scan long documents up to just under a meter in length. I put ~60cm long receipts in there for it to scan in Auto, but it detects a “jam” after about the length of an A4 page, simply because for long paper, you’re forced to use the fixed-width, variable-length profiles “Long paper” or “Long paper (narrow-width)”.

As you’ve probably guessed, this means your documents won’t automatically be cropped to their actual widths but have gray bars (excess scan) on the sides. Not a problem if you don’t like your PDFs to be relatively clean and cropped to the size of the document instead of some amateur work. If you’re often scanning a variety of document sizes including long ones, having to keep switching from Auto size to Long paper is also very annoying.

Until they fix this issue that’s bothered me for some time, I’ll have to give it a 4/5.

The Brother ADS-1200 is really easy to use and very rarely mis feeds. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who does an average amount of scanning.

Arrived quickly and works well. Setting up took a little time but was straight forward enough. Sometimes little receipts are tricky to load but even if scanned crookedly, are straightened up by the software. On the whole, I pleased with it.

I bought this scanner after reading Wirecutter’s review of Brother’s scanning products. Frankly, I love this scanner: it is compact, very easy to set up and use. I use it for home office use.

After going to the Brother website and downloading the installation software, setting up was easy. As with all units of this size, you can’t expect to put 10+ pages in the hopper and expect it to run through without hassle. But I have the same with my Scansnap. This Brother unit is great for small scans for filing, emailing etc. Compact size means it does not take up much space on your desk — and you can take it to another location easily.

I’m a great fan of desktop scnners – I’ve used the storage app Evernote and had a real try at pushing towards as paper free an office as I can. My current model is a ScreenSnap and I was interested to compare this model. The device is under stated and fits easily onto a good size desk. The document feed is very quick indeed and does both sides automatically. A large format window on the scanner providing a range of scanning options. Installing can take time but I used the WPS and got it done quite briskly. The controls have a blizzard of options, but it is fairly easy to get what you want. This will scan directly to Dropbox OneDrive etc. for even more convenience. Best of all it is fast! documents whizz through, and allow you to get on quickly. This I think is the clincher for me. I can’t imagine you’d regret choosing this.

    Effective and good value.

I am trying to move to a paper free world. So any mail I get which I want to retain I want to scan. For that I want something which I can use quickly and easily and get my scans into DropBox as quickly as possible.

I have used this using the app on my phone and it works fine for part of my needs. The scanning itself works OK and it works wirelessly. The scans are quite large compared to the output size on other scanners I have used. There is no OCR function using the scanner this way. I haven’t tried it out using a Mac Computer yet – that’s my next step – but the info suggests that the OCR software is for Windows machines.

It’s not cheap but as a mobile solution it is pretty good and, thus far an improvement on the Canon P-215 which I had previously.

First thing I noticed about this Brother ADS-1200 scanner is how fast it is. From the time you press the button to the moment document is scanned and saved to your USB stick or computer, it is about 5-6 seconds… And it does scan both sides of the document at the same time and saves it neatly into pdf but you need to have in mind you need to place documents upside down and back to front, not as pictured on the product images. If you place document facing you the way it shows on the product images it will be scanned upside down. There is no mention of the scanning method in the instructions booklet, but this is something easy to figure out by trial and error method.

If you are getting Brother ADS-1200 there are only two scanning options: to the USB stick or to the computer via USB 3.0. Sadly, scanning to the computer via the network with the Brother ADS-1200 is not available.

Scanning to the USB stick is super easy, no set up is required. The only minus for me is the fact the USB plug socket is on the back of the scanner so I have to lift it and move around every time in order to connect/disconnect the USB stick, which is a bit annoying. I would prefer the socket to be on the front.

Scanning to the computer via USB 3.0. is a brilliant idea as the scanner can be also powered with this connection so this would be very handy if you need to take the scanner to the library or another place away from home or office but First of all, the USB 3.0. cable is not provided, you need to have your own that will be long enough to connect the scanner to the computer. And if you find the right cable, setting up for the scanner to see your computer is not that easy either.
As soon as I connected the scanner Windows asked me to add a new scanner, it went all smoothly but for some reason, the scanner does not seem to see my computer and when I press “scan to computer” button it does blink for a while but then it stops and nothing happens. It could be the cable fault so I need to get a new USB 3.0. cable to check if that was the issue. Until then I will have to scan to the USB stick.

On the positive note, the scanner is very compact, great for travel, especially with the USB 3.0. connection that can double as a power source and Kensington lock socket.

A desktop scanner with a relatively small footprint that is a move away from the flat-bed models of some years ago. This relies on a fold-out document feed mechanism rather than laying one out flat on a glass plate. Unusually, the “Brother ADS-1200 Document Scanner | Compact | PC Connected | Desktop” is not only USB-connected but can also be USB-powered; mains power connection is possible via the provided lead should you wish to use or need to use it (see below). A wireless model with otherwise similar specifications is an alternative. When not in use, the feed element can be folded back out of harm’s way, and kept dust-free.

There is also a dedicated feed slot for smaller items such as a driving licence, ID, credit and debit cards that bypasses the automatic feeder. While its document feeder will automatically feed typical paper weights of office stationery up to 128gsm when USB-powered, heavier weights such as card-stock of up to 250 gsm will need to be fed manually, one sheet at a time, but you will then also need mains power.

Although not described as A4, the maximum document width is slightly greater but it can scan documents of 80 cm in length should one ever be encountered. Additionally, it can scan both sides simultaneously where required and optionally in colour or B&W. Via the feeder, it will accept a stack of up to 20 individual documents. Scan speed is more than acceptably fast, offering up to 25 pages per minute at 50 inches per minute of printed matter. Its scan resolution is 600 x 600 dpi, adequate for its copying texts and graphics as a personal or office document scanner. It does not offer the higher resolutions needed for photos etc.

A ‘driver disk’ is not provided; not every PC now includes an optical drive and they are also less-often used. Its software packages are available via Brothers’ web site (Mac OS-X, and Windows 7 and up only), easily found by inputting the model number (ADS-1200) in the Product Support Page Search Bar that includes its drivers and scanning software, OCR functions (scan to editable text), document and PDF management software (versions of Nuance). The combined size of all packages excluding its online documentation is circa 500MB if downloaded individually but a combined installer is much smaller, all of which were quite recently dated when checked. Further software updates may be available in due course. Be aware that the PDF software is Trial only and registration and activation authorisation is US$179!

The scanner has sometimes exhibited functional issues, not least with folded or flimsy paperwork. Being a roller-fed scanner rather than a flatbed, feeding issues will be common.

As a long-term user of Brother laser printers, personally and in the office, a reputation for quality and reliable performance was established. Unlike brands such as Canon, Epson and HP, Brother is best known for its printers and MFPs; stand-alone scanners did not feature in previous product ranges. Major usage problems are not anticipated but, if ever required, support services are very good and UK-based.

POSTSCRIPT 10/2020 – Although working adequately with normal correspondence, statements etc, I was later asked to copy a laminated document for a neighbour but it proved impossible as it was too stiff to pass through the scanner’s 120-degree (or thereabouts) feeder system; a flatbed or direct feed scanner would be needed for anything thicker or stiffer than 120gsm paper. Consideration may be given to purchasing another suitable portable scanner should such a need again arise.

This offers a fast route to achieve an almost paper-free office without the need to dedicate a huge amount of space to equipment. It occupies a small footprint on the edge of my desk, which only increases marginally when opened up ready for use. The paper feed operates smoothly and efficiently with reams of documents scanned neatly away in quick order and a pile of shredding built up in no time at all.

This type of scanner is invaluable in an office environment to allow you to deal efficiently with the daily post as well as historical documents. It will also be of use in the home, allowing bills and other household sundry items to be scanned and then filed for easy reference – all in a neat body that, when closed up, occupies little space and does not scream ‘office equipment’ to anyone that catches a glimpse of it.

I used to have a flatbed scanner that took an age to copy documents; this is blink of an eye fast and uses a tiny amount of space by comparison. Whether you are considering this for home or office, if the reason is to get rid of piles of documents and store neatly in the ether, you won’t go far wrong with this.

I bought this because of it’s Single Pass option.
This enables both side scanning and convert to PDF at the same time.
I had 250 pages (both sides) to scan onto a memory stick.
No problems, no paper jam, worked a treat and quick.
Its small self contained and fits into a laptop bag no problem.
    Good value.

The scanner works very well, feeder is accurate, works double sided and the software allows you to create workflows, so set a save location and away you go. Would recommend as I tried a few before this.
