This is a great All-In-One printer/scanner/copier. It prints black exclusively so definitely will not print colour. It is just what I needed for my black and white printing jobs.
After a very frustrating experience with a brand new and more expensive HP printer I got one of these and I didn’t have to give away all my personal information or download a massive driver all I have to do was plug it in put in the CD with the drivers on it and in no time at all it was working. Perfect 🙂
I like the compact size of this printer, the speed and print quality are good.
It works ok once you understand the operation and wake up time of the sleep mode.
The one thig that bothers me a bit is that pages come out more curled than I would like. Will need to check with another make of paper to be sure.
As Wi Fi is becoming increasingly insecure, this USB printer could be an answer for those who have had documents stolen. You will need your own printer connection cable (Not supplied) but once you have downloaded the drivers from the internet as Windows 11 does not have, you have a small but effective black and white printer that does the job. The print quality could be better but it serves most needs. I would recommend this printer as it is also cheap. An automatic turn off gives you added power saving but the speed is more than adequate. Definite yes to this little workhorse.
It doesn’t come with the print cable, and you need it to configure the product. That doesn’t make any sense… But the printer is fast, easy to get ready and compact.
A good little printer, easy to install and use, would highly recommend as a home printer. The only downside is the USB cable is not supplied with the printer, I ordered this separately for 3.99. As its not wireless printer Brother should consider supplying it with this item.
Not use it much as yet just printed the test page seems OK however it did leave clear tram tracks in paper from paper feed rollers Would have prefered if paper tray could be closed when loaded to prevent dust entering the working parts of the printer. Also for price you pay I would have like the connected cable to be supplied with the printer. Delivery and order processing system excellent.
This is a reasonable cheap printer-scanner for home use. One thing to be aware of is that it is NOT Mopria compliant and you will therefore have no option but to use the Brother mobile app. The Brother print service does work but intermittently. I could not get the native Android print service nor the Mopria “branded” services to pick the device up. It is not listed as a supported device on the Mopria site.
Less than 10min from opening the box to printing (including registration of the printer). Couldn’t be simpler.
Unpack, shove a USB cable in (as stated in other reviews it’s not supplied, I used one from an old printer), instal drivers (no cd tray in my laptop so simple download from manufacturer’s website) and done.
There are a few bad reviews from supposed IT people who struggled. I can’t figure out what with because a 5 year old could do it.
Print quality really good for the price.
This came recommended in a review of desktop mono printers. Does the job well. It also has apps for phone connectivity which is handy, I often find I want to print something off the phone.
Two things I’d like to improve it would be: better wireless setup, it just would not pair using WPS and needed a usb cable (not bad but I had to go looking for one in ‘the drawer’), setup was a breeze with the cable and they do recommend using a cable to be fair. The second thing was a backlit screen, it’s difficult to see it unless you’re standing directly above it, I’ve got mine further back on the desk and cannot read the screen without using a light, mind you, you don’t need to look at it much at all once it’s all set up. I’m still glad I bought it as it prints really nicely.
I don’t intend printing a lot (which if why I replaced a troublesome inkjet with a basic laser printer) so I can only give my impression from initial usage. It was easy to insert the toner cartridge and connect up a USB printer cable I already had (none supplied). For Linux I tried initially to use a generic CUPS driver but that didn’t work. However, the manufacturer’s website has drivers for Linux and the two files I downloaded work together on my 64-bit distro.
I was able to print out a text file and also some scanned text with a little graphics from a PDF file. Some reviewers say you can’t print a PDF file due to the printer only having 1 MB of memory. If it causes difficulty, I suggest sending one page at a time to the printer (even though the whole document is multiple MBs, a single page will be a fraction of that). Compression of the PDF file is another option. There are websites which will do that for you. On Linux you can use the ghostscript utility and specify a lower resolution output (e.g. ebook = 150 dpi).
Drivers were slightly hard to find on the website but after that, set up was easy and seems like a good printer for the money!
I bought this laser printer for occasional home use for black and white printing and/or scanning of important documents from Apple devices over WiFi.
It is fully wireless and was easy to set up using WPS. I didn’t need to move the printer near the router.
Smart look in grey and charcoal. Easy to insert/remove the large ink cartridge (one supplied with the printer). It feels like a basic quality similar to the home office inkjet printers I have used in the past.
It is in sleep mode most of the time but wakes up quickly when I need to print.
Good for a budget laser. Double sided prints are awkward as well as multiple scans but works well on the home network with several people using i
instructions not clear on how to fit toner cartridge. but lovely compact printer, easy to print from my mobile. ideal for occasional printing love it.cant go wrong with this one.up to 700 pages with toner cartridge.
A great little printer! Easy to set up (10minutes) aand wi fi enabled! Fantastic print quality too. Great value and have taken my old inkjet to the tip!
The paper sticks out the front. There is a danger of items being pulled into the printer if this is not checked before you start printing each time. A simple cover (even one of cardboard) might be a solution. The printer was a bit louder than I expected. Setting up the password for the WiFi is a bit tedious, stepping through every letter of the alphabet with the up/down key. Overall, my sister is happy now that it is up and running.
This is a basic printer and it does that job fine. However, the software is perhaps overly complicated for such a basic machine. Tunes out you need to download another piece of software if you want to change the sleep mode settings. Annoying.
The printer was very easy to set up on WiFi and works well for all my family on their mobile phones. The only negative is that it is noisy when printing but I was aware of that when I bought it and I don’t print too often in general.
This was bought to replace an ageing, trusted Brother HL-2035 which I damaged through clumsiness.
As others have mentioned, you’ll need to put aside an hour to get this set up. It’s a little bit fiddly and you need to download the Brother app from the link provided, or install it from the CD which comes in the box.
Note: There is no USB cable included in the box which, whilst the instructions recommend that you use one for setup. I’m not sure if it’s even possible to complete setup without one. So you’ll need a USB-A to USB-B cable if you don’t already have one.
However, once it’s set up, you can unplug the USB cable (I have not plugged it back in since).
Print quality is excellent. Scanning is excellent (and I like the way it just pushes the scans back to your computer with no fuss).
And an unexpected use case that I hadn’t planned for is the ability to be able to print over WiFi from our phones – without the need to go via a computer first.
So far I am very happy with it. One (very minor) gripe is that the paper drawer requires that you leave it open as shown in the photo – there’s no way (that I could see) to have it fully loaded with a small footprint.
But all in all I think this is a good machine and I’d recommend it. I didn’t buy this for WiFi printing but I’m now happy I have that feature.
I bought this for my sons room so that he could print his school work instead on of using my Brother inkjet printer all the time. The Brother Laser Printer is quite cheap for a printer and the replacement toner cartridges are a good price.
BUILD QUALITY
The printer is quite light for a laser printer – I could lift the box with one hand. It is quite sturdy and has a single paper feed that can hold up to 100 sheets at a time. The paper input protrudes out from the front of the printer by a good 4 inches so make sure you have enough desk space as it is larger than the measurements given in the photos.
SETUP
Remove all the protective retainers and film/tape. The printer comes with a supplied toner cartridge which is straightforward to fit
As this is a wireless printer the setup is very easy. I used the menu on the printer to set it up and took all of 2 mins. Once connected it will print out a sheet providing details of the connection.
Inserting the paper was more fiddly than I expected and the first couple of sheets printed at an angle. But with a little correction this was easily sorted.
PRINT QUALITY
I printed a photo from my phone and this printed in decent black and white. The printer is able to print 20 pages per minute of edge to edge printing which is quite fast – but fine do what we need.
NOISE
The printer was noisier than in expected, certainly more noisy than my inkjet printer. In sleep mode there is obviously no noise.
OVERALL
Do be aware of the size – although printer itself is quite small – with the paper loaded the printer takes up more space. Nevertheless, this is a decent printer for the price.
I wanted a simple printer for home, but found far too much choice. And for every printer the had 100+ “5 or 4 star” reviews, it would also have 10s of “1 or 2 star” reviews as well. What became clear me, and helped me select this printer (and might help you) was the following:
1. “Laser” is far better quality (used on office printers) and far less susceptible to “ink problems” than “Ink jet”;
2. Many “good value printers are a con as they either come with a cartridge that gives you 10 prints, or ties you in to cartridge replacement contracts, or automated replacement. I want be in control and know when my cartridge is. really empty!
3. I only want to print letters & forms, and not photos, so colour printing is not important, and helps reduce complexity and ink costs;
4. I wanted wireless to use with my MAC, but use with mobile devices was not a priority;
5. I want good quality prints/copies/scans, and to be able to scan colour sources;
6. I will only be printing a few pages a week, and so “cost per print” is not so important, and looking at the divers ways in which manufacturers quote & calculate this, I don’t trust the figures anyway;
This printer seemed to satisfy all my above needs, so I went ahead and ordered one from “the warehouse” at a further 10 saving. It arrived 2 days later, and within less than 30 minutes, I had it fully installed and working, having checked all functions. It looks to be ideal and I hope it stands the test of time and my intolerance of poor products. It is very easy to set up and you don’t need any cables; for MACs it uses Bonjour to do ad-hoc networking and get your router settings automatically.
Why not a “5 star” review? … well (and I know it is a budget product) it is a bit “plasticky and flimsy” and made me a bit nervous pulling the various bits out to install the cartridge, etc. “clicks” that sound like something has snapped were common, but seemed normal. This is a minor point since I shouldn’t have to pull it apart that often! The one niggling thing is the small LCD, and the fact it doesn’t seem have any backlighting, so is very difficult to read. May be I missed a setting somewhere, but given the cheapness of larger dot matrix displays, for example, this is an are that could be improved.
Over all though, this is a very compact and neat printer for the home office, with easy set-up and easy-to-use features and not loads of complicated options/selections. It just does the jobs I want it to 🙂
