I received the lens this week and the lens does not say ‘DS’ on it. At the front of the lens it has printed on it ‘CANON LENS RF85mm F1.2 L USM’ …. the DS model will have printed on it ‘CANON LENS RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS’.

That said, it is an exceptional lens. The Bokeh is really good. The only thing the DS coating does is smooth out the Bokeh more, but in videos from pro’s comparing images from both, sometimes the DS is better and others the non DS is better.

I’ve added a couple of shots where you can see how sharp it is at distance, and then how that Bokeh appears when focussing closer. It was fairly dark out, but ISO100 at 1/1250 and 1/1600. I even got some at ISO100 1/4000 that are fine, thanks to the F1.2.

I’ll be trying this lens for Astrophotography too, Comet Olbers and Andromeda Galaxy this weekend.

You need to be aware when ordering this lens that the part number in the details 3447C005AA is for the standard Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM Lens, not the DS version with the Defocus Smoothing. I have advised Amazon so hopefully they will update the title and description soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM Lens (Not DS)

    Quasi perfek

When it comes to portraits, nothing can beat this lens. Nothing at all. The EF85 was known as being an incredible portrait lens but suffered from the fact you needed to set a focus point and recompose your frame and the focus was hit and miss – when it hit it was astounding but when it missed, well, it missed.

This RF version however has razor sharp focus and coupled with the incredible eye focus tracking of the R series cameras makes this lens the most incredible portrait lens you will ever use. Yes, it really is that good. Bokeh is silky smooth, focus is pin sharp, detail is incredible (just zoom into the reflections in your subjects pupil to see what I mean), and the hit rate is pretty much 100% – if you miss, it’s because you probably weren’t concentrating.

This is an incredibly expensive lens and it is incredibly heavy too. But when you see the results you will forget the price, forget the weight, and try to find something else to take a photo of.

Buy it without hesitation. Absolutely essential! Absolutely peerless!
