Good item. Would recommend buying a real good tripod though. The moon filter fits into the eye rubber if you put it in the wrong way round. But still a good item

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersReally good optical instrument. Bought for taking pictures of the Moon and Planets. Initial results are good, pictures showing Jupiter and some of the moons. (Jupiter was low down and quite faint). And a close up of the Moon and craters.
Should get better results on a clearer starry night, so work in progress.
(Click on the last picture for full view, Jupiter and 6 moons)

    Great for star/planet gazing.

Very happy with product and swiftness of delivery.
Disappointed no “soft carrying case” included as indicated on packaging of this product and as advertised on website.
Can you possibly address the problem of missing article.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersAn excellent scope. However you are given the impression because of the “manufacturers comments” on the page you purchase it on that it comes with a T-Adapter for your DSLR. It doesn’t! Be warned.

The image is crisp but degrades a little at higher magnification – that was expected. Haven’t as yet had a really clear day to test to the full. That said very pleased with the purchase.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersOverall I’m happy with the price / performance of this scope both for bird watching / wildlife and some casual astronomy. As some have commented there is some chromatic aberration using this scope, but as is usual with CA this is noticeable in areas of extreme contrast, looking at the Moon for example, but for the price point this is not a surprise and not especially noticeable when bird watching. If you want zero CA you’re looking at the wrong price range!

Overall the image is quite sharp and bright and very pleasing, certainly good enough for my eyes when bird watching to pick out details and identify the species being observed. the scope is relatively light for it’s size and the carry bag is reasonably handy.

A couple of niggles, as some have pointed out the scope cant really be used with the carry bag, it really needs a velcro or other flap over the focus knob to make it accessible, then I think it will work “in the bag”. The front dust cap is a bit weedy and pops off with the slightest touch, the eyepiece cap is much firmer and pushes over the rubber eyecup and has a tendency to also remove the eyecup leaving the camera adaptor thread exposed.

Although I have a T2 camera adaptor I have not used the scope for digiscoping, I own some fairly good telephoto lenses and this scope is certainly no match for them optically but if you don’t have such exotic gear in your camera bag I can see where this scope could be of some use.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersPretty good. I compared it to a Gosky model and there was a positive difference in image but not a huge deal breaker. The Celestron is let down by an eye peace with falls out all the time and a lens cap cover which isn’t attached. Decent quality. Moon looks grea

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersWell for the price this scope does take some beating, was a little sceptical but have found it very good in use. The only thing that could do with changing is the soft case supplied as you can’t work the focus dial with it on very well.

Bought this as a Christmas present, the person I bought it for says it is the best piece of birding equipment they have ever had, they have taken it out several times over the holidays, brilliant clear views, and could see far more than ever achieved with binoculars. Would defo recommend. Also bought the tripod that was linked up with this scope, the Hama Star 62, not brilliant for this scope, it is lovely and light to carry, but not a good fit and has wobble when the scope is fitted

I’ve just received the spotting scope and it meets my needs. I especially like its build quality. It feels reassuringly robust. I did observe colour fringing when looking at some birds perched on a tree. Overall, I’m happy with the performance and I think it’s a bargain for its price (around 155).

Golden Review Award: 30 From Our UsersBought this for our new apartment which overlooks the beautiful Poole Harbour and Purbeck hills. We’re about 7 miles from Corfe Castle and can just about make it out with the naked eye on a good day; this scope allows us to pick out the shape of the castle towers clearly. On boats in the harbour which are approx 2 miles away we can clearly see the name of the vessel and count the people on deck. We’re hoping we’ll be able to spot dolphins and seals when they make their way into the harbour. We already had a good tripod but invested in a decent fluid head to give good control. Yes, of course for this price you don’t get perfect optics, so there is some aberration around the outer edge, but I think it’s acceptable at this end of the market. If we had a lot more cash to splash we’d have probably spent a few more 100s and bought a better one, but for just browsing the view and keeping an eye on shipping it’s perfect for us!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersWell I have to say as a total novice, never having used one before, I was expecting to see the moon with this scope, the picture quality was outstanding looking at earth objects but when I found the moon in my scopes the sight was breath taking, could see the craters and also see the spikes of the mountains on the moon very clearly as though I was there, need to practise to get close up but what I’ve seen so far on my first go is outstanding, and that is using it for the moo

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Usersdecent scope. shame there are focusing issues at higher magnification and might have been better if they reigned it back a bit to maybe x50 instead of x60. but for the price i would buy it again even though i am aware of this.

The Ultima is very reasonably priced for what it is. I’ve looked through an 850 telescope, and – although very good – it didn’t seem to be 700-odd better than the Ultima! Good clarity, waterproof, and reasonably light, it has the added advantage (for me) of only needing a screw-ring adaptor to attach my Nikon D60!

It does – like most long ‘scopes – need a solid tripod, like a Slik 700D or similar, and even with this, some sort of frontal support is desirable, although this doesn’t just apply to the Ultima, but all large ‘scopes.

All in all, as an entry-level telescope, you’d be hard-pushed to do much better – especially at the price.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe scope arrived in good time but I found the eyepiece zoom felt like it was filled with grinding paste not grease on the thread and was notchy at both ends of travel. So I returned it for a replacement. This arrived before the original was collected. Well done Amazon!
Alas the replacement had the same fault but not quite as bad. I arranged a return but was contacted by Amazon who said as it looked like the batch was faulty they would refund my money. In the meantime I found someone who had one and they told me it was quite common on this product at the cheaper end of the market so I cancelled the return and refund, keeping the second one. It’s got a 10 year guarantee which set my mind at rest. I contacted 3 other suppliers who checked their stock and also found the eyepieces not quite smooth
Now to the scope, a few people have commented that the quality deteriorates towards the 60x end of the zoom. Yes it does but very slightly. I found the optics to be excellent even with this tail-off. I think the eyepiece could have done with some sort of locator to stop it turning when zooming – you have to have the eyepiece on tight to stop this. The case is very good and I bought a quick release adapter for my Manfrotto tripod.
Very happy with the performance and had it not been for the lumpy zoom and lack of eyepiece locator I’d have given it 5 stars however I’d give Amazon 5 stars for customer service.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersVery pleased with this scope for the price.Really well built and good to look at.The sighting tube works really well once you get the hang of it.I like the light weight and compact size.Very happy with the brightness at full range but find the magnification pretty useless after around 35X for birding anyway, and would like the option to upgrade the eyepiece.

Used for bird watching from hides at a local reservoir. At dusk or in poor light you can tell a difference between this and other more expensive scopes but for 90% of the time this is just excellent. Certainly worth buying if you are on a budget and are anything less than a serious, serious birder who is prepared to spend a much larger amount of cash. I won’t be upgrading for a long time yet.

The kids like looking at the moon through it too!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersObviously not the top of the range, latest optics however for the price it has been fantastic. Images have been clear and sharp. Zoom is pretty good although I do tend to stay around 2/3rds max but have ventured to the x60 once or twice in very good light conditions (this seems to be when it works at its best). 20 to 45(ish) work all the time. A brilliant scope for the price you pay. My only advice is to make sure you have a really decent tripod, I purchased the Hama Star 63 Tripod and it is no where near good enough (too much plastic). I’m looking to buy a Horizon tripod soon.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI don’t have much to compare this telescope with, and haven’t looked at the moon yet for instance.
For terrestrial observing though, it’s fine up to about 45x, a bit dodgy beyond that.
Sharper focus at lower mag as you’d expect I guess. As some sort of vague benchmark- from my garden I can just about see the 4′ high trig point on a hill about 16 miles away- heat haze permitting- at about 35x mag. Some blue fringeing going on.
Actually, it’s a shame the mag doesn’t go down a bit further for my use- 18x is a bit high for a wide-angle and brighter look around. It’s fairly portable in a rucksack- quite a bit smaller/shorter than the 80mm model for eg. Needs some sort of tripod to get the best from it though, of course….see my Hama 62 review. I’d love to try out the Baader zoom
    eyepiece other folks have swapped the supplied eyepiece for- how much sharper are we talking for another 200 ? :-}

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersThis scope give a very bright image with a wide image circle. There is a little CA and the zoom eyepiece is hopeless at higher magnifications (>about 40 times). But, for this amount of money, this is an excellent product. The brightness of the image makes the scope suitable for astro work as well as birding etc.

Never had a Spotting Scope before and did not want to go over the top with cost, it does many of the things that much more expensive scopes do for a lot less money. Would like to be able to zoom in a little more so maybe some time could upgrade on new eye piece.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI bought this scope because I wanted something that is reasonably portable, and therefore usable. I have a bigger scope which is more trouble than its worth with its interchangable lenses etc , Its surprisingly big and heavy and coming without a tripod, is meant for a sturdy photographic one. However, the lens system produces excellent bright sharp images throughout its zoom range. Its good for looking at the moon and basic celestial viewing, and is good on the ground too – I can read a car number-plate at a kilometre, even in dull conditions..The zoom is very handy for aiming it, which saves much frustration,
Its a excellent instrument. I love it.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is a great little scope. I purchased it predominately for archery, and it did not disappoint. At 100yds, the full target face is crisp and clear – so easy to spot arrows. Although it is waterproof, it also comes with a case that you can leave on when tripod mounted and unzip the end. Only downside is that the lens cap is not as tight as it could be and it could do with an eyepiece cover. It’s also useful for stargazing. Have used it to view Jupiter and its moons.

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersAfter reading many reviews I bought one of these scopes for my partner for bird watching and star gazing. Easy-peasy to put together and so simple to use. Yes, at the higher magnification the image does darken a tad, but is still acceptable, and the extra reach can be very handy.
The quality of the scope is excellent and it’s weight was surprisingly light (it is a fair sized unit)and have found it to be a very impressive bit of kit for the price. So much so that I have ordered one for myself too.
I do recommend a good stable tripod though, preferably without a “portrait” tilt up type head.
I’d have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone wanting a good quality scope.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersFor the money this is a very impressive scope. It is also the winner of an award for its type and price range by top British scope users (the sky at night).
The only draw back I can find with having a scope is the additional weight and that is true for all scopes not just this one. Perfect for those who want to enhance their wildlife watching experience but do not want to invest in the expensive brands which cost 300 – 1500.
With the saved money you could invest in a carbon fibre tripod to help combat the weight issue.

I chose to buy the Velbon Sherpa 500R from Amazon as well for around 70 and its a sturdy but versatile scope which suits the need of not just wildlife scoping user but also photography. Although the tripod is a bit on the heavy side I can still recommend it. I also urge you to buy a tripod which includes the quick release feature, it saves you much time and effort.

Choose this scope and you will not be disappointed, unless you have loads of money to invest in the top of the range scopes which have an improved image quality for 10X the price. This improvement is not necessary for the everyday birder to enjoy or spot and identify wildlife. Thanks to this scope and others like it birding can be done very economically.

I also recommend Bushnell as excellent and cheap binocular makers. The H2O range 8×42 is what I use and its a good binocular for the price, only 68 on Amazon! Again slightly heavy for some peoples taste but I wear them all the time and find them ideal and not too heavy at all.

Golden Review Award: 44 From Our UsersI purchased this scope for checking my arrows on the target and have been very happy with it. The narrow field of view which is a slight disadvantage mentioned in an earlier review is of no consequence to an archer and the zoom facility is more than I require for easy spotting at 100yards. It is slightly heavier and longer than my old scope but comes with a carry case and shoulder strap. I have had to purchase a heavier tripod but this was no bad thing as my previous scope broke when the old flimsy tripod was blown over. I did a lot of comparisons before buying this scope and it was very good value for money.

Golden Review Award: 165 From Our UsersBought this after comparing many different spotting scopes including some very expensive ones; mostly all the cheaper ones have fairly poor optics, there might be some good ones but I couldn’t find any. It seems fairly difficult to get any objective reviews of the Celestron Ultima scope, most reviews are either advertising hype or people who haven’t used it and based on conjecture. The Ultima build quality is very good, optics are nothing short of great especially considering this is not ED glass, image does go a bit dark at 60X but that’s in the nature of the beast, at 22X to about 50X it is really excellent. Eye relief is fairly good too, I can keep my spectacles on even at full magnification. I’ve used this to look at birds at 10m (yes, 10m) to 500m and it’s really useable when the light fades after dusk; general spotting up to several miles is excellent too but then you are really at the mercy of the atmosphere – all in all it’s excellent, I can only imagine what trebling the price to buy ED glass gives you! It even has a built in T-adapter to mount a cameras, a camera lens of this quality and size would cost many hundreds of .
I mainly bought this for my daughter for astronomy, she already has a Newtonian but finds that really tedious to set up for quick viewing, no problems with this Celestron though. Although the experts will tell you that spotting scopes do not work well for astronomy work, the Ultima 80 is great. It may not suit the experts but for the casual hobbyist it gives really great images of the moon and planets (Saturn is a little small but the rings are clear). It’s only drawback is the comparatively small field of view for astronomy, e.g. the best you can get in is two of the stars from Orions belt. Even the experts agree that the best scope for astronomy is the one you use most often, in our case this is the Ultima! It is light, easy to focus, gives, clear images (atmospherics allowing of course) and I (and my daughter) couldn’t be happier. You do need a tripod, but that’s the same for all spotting scopes. Amazon’s price is better than most and delivery was very quick. If you are confused over spotting scopes and can’t afford a lot of money then I can wholeheartedly reommend this one, I do not think you will be disappointed.
