- Typical I/O performance numbers as measured using IOMeter with a queue depth of 32 and write cache enabled. Fresh out-of-the-box (FOB) state is assumed. For performance measurement purposes, the SSD may be restored to FOB state using the secure erase command. System variations will affect measured results.
- Some of the storage capacity is used for formatting and other purposes and is not available for data storage. 1GB equals 1 billion bytes. Not all capacities available at initial launch.
- Active average power use comparison based on published specs of the 1TB Crucial MX500 SSD and the 1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue WD10EZEX internal hard drive. All other capacities of the Crucial MX500 SSD have comparable active average power consumption specs.

I got this to use for storing video files that I download so I can watch them on my ancient TV downstairs, does the job & easily fits in an external case (see my other reviews).
The manufacturers name is good, the transfer speed is good, the capacity is good.
What else need saying?
SSDs are only becoming cheaper so you may as well buy one now if you’re still using a HDD! I’ve had this for over a year now, bought it at 43 and its now 32. I switched from a very slow Samsung HDD and I regret not buying an SSD sooner. My bootup time at the time of writing is now 14 seconds, which isn’t fast by any means and I’m not sure how to push it further but I am completely fine with the speed of my PC right now. 500GB is enough for me as I don’t have many games or large videos on my PC, and I formatted 100GB to be kept free.
Looks solid have yet to install but will say I brought this thinking it was pure white but is just metal silver color but the photo shows white not a deal breaker but I was going for a full white PC as for price got it in the black Friday deal so happy
I have always liked Crucial for the quality of their items and their good customer service. This is a good little SSD with decent specs for a decent price.
I used this to replace a smaller capacity one and I use it for my main boot drive with Windows on for speed.
If you have never used SSD you need to upgrade now for a massive quality of life improvement.
Be wary of trusting your important data to those super cheap SSDs you can buy, always have a full and complete backup.
I brought this to replace my existing hard drive my laptop is about 7 years old now and hass been running really slow. After a bit of researching I can up with the decision to replace the hard drive wanted to change it to an SSD and this has worked a treat its now about as quick as when I first brought it really happy. only giving it 4 star because I didn’t realise I needed a sata cable before hand
I have 3 of these 2TB SSDs in a RAID 5 configuration in my HP Z620, (you need to use 2.5 to 3.5in sata adapters, P/N 668261-001 for the blind fixing), and they just work silently and very speedily. The difference in noise, power consumption.heat generation, access time is worthwhile the extra cost compared to spinning platters – the price differential between SSDs and HDDs has really collapsed such that I would not now contemplate an HDD (unless we;re talking about 8TB+ storage requirements where HDDs still reign supreme.) I have used CRUCIAL SSDs (and RAM) for many years now, and have never had a problem, ie don’t be tempted to save a few quid by buying the cheaper unknown brands, stick to Crucial and Samsung.
I’ve bought 2 of these now. There is something you should know before buying. You will need to connect these into an already working machine (I use an external drive reader) and go to your “partitions” in Windows (Windows key, type Partition and hit Enter). Then right click the unallocated drive space and assign a letter etc. for your PC to then be able to use the drive properly.
This is a big boy, easy to setup, stores all my data easily on my laptop. Crucial brand is consistently great value for money, this upgraded my 2tb and never had any problems with that.
This 1TB SSD was installed into a 2012 Mac Mini as a second drive. Works perfectly. Very happy with this purchase and cannot believe how the prices have come down over time.
Had to replace an SSD
Wanted some of these super fast m2, but unfortunately doesn’t work on my motherboard
So I plumbed for a bigger newer version of the drive I had. 20mins later everything transferred from old to new!
Replaced 500gb hdd for this 500gb ssd. Boots up way quiker and opens apps quicker too. Used easeUS software to clone my original hdd to the new ssd, laptop booted up straight away with new ssd. Look for tutorials on YouTube, just need a sata to usb lead and follow the instructions.
A great SSD which does exactly what it says on the tin.
eplaced a failing boot drive and speeds up the boot process immensely
Very light, after cloning existing disc, removed old 3.5 HDD and expected to need to use new tray to fit this onto. However, so light, it just sits on SATA connectors. Quick! Brought new life into my desktop. Some challeges with cloning as I was going from 2 TB HDD to 1 TB SSD. Managed in end but with Macrium software, not the supplied software (downloaded via Crucial). Apart from that challenge, recommended purchase.
Using this to upgrade older laptops so I purchased it quite a few times and it hasn’t failed in any system yet.
I contnue to buy these when they are discounted as they are just so reliable and the dram chip makes a real noticable difference for write tasks.
Great little hard drives for fast storage than an old klunke
Got this to replace the failed hard drive in my Freesat box. Works perfectly now with the reassurance of no moving parts.
I bought this for keep data/backup. I thought an ssd drive would speed up data transfer from desktop pc to usb external (via enclosure) but I was wrong because it didn’t. The “bottleneck” is the hard drive installed on desktop (Toshiba P300 1TB read and write speeds for sequential data (e.g. large files) of about 150 MB/s.) so transfer between pc desktop hard disk and external usb ssd Crucial CT4000MX500SSD1 is limited by the maximum speed of the pc desktop hard disk.
Time of transfer 661GB data from Toshiba P300 1TB HDD to Crucial MX500 4TB SSD took 1h:12mi
Bought this for our 2013 laptop. Moved from a Toshiba mechanical 5400rpm hdd to this and its like night and day. Used to take 10 minutes from login to be able to start a browser, now can do it within seconds. Free edition of acronis software from Crucial website made the clone old to new a walk in the park. Just make sure you have a sata to usb cable if cloning from a laptop
I bought this for a older MacBook Pro 2011 it works and made the laptop a lot faster on boot up but what I would say is do your home work for Macs it took me about a day trying to do the format and get the old OS X system on the laptop once I had fitted the ssd card
the good thing is Mac does all the work for you cloning your hard drive if you youtube everything before you start unlike me I was like a bull in a china shop straight to it
like I said do your home work on it firs
Apparently some SSD caddies don’t properly recognise these large drives when connected to some macs m. When I first connected this to my Mac, disk utility reported that it was a 1.8 TB drive and there was no way I could format it as 4 TB. It turned out that the issue was my caddy, but I didn’t find this out until I had spent a lot of time online, searching, help forums etc. It would be handy if the manufacturer put a note in With the drive to save all that frustration as this is happening to many users. I got around the problem by connecting the caddy to a Windows machine and formatting as fat 32, then reconnected to the Mac and re-partitioning as Mac Format.
Swapped out a failing older SSD and was amazed at speed gains from using new versio
I just bought an enclosure and this drive for Mac Mini to fee space on Mac Mini. Now lightning fast in all apps and write speed to drive is exceptional.
The drive itself is great value, but be sure to upgrade the firmware before use! The drive I purchased was the 2TB capacity which came with the M3CR045 firmware, however I could not install Ubuntu without the drive emitting IO errors and timeouts. I had to boot into Windows (from another drive) to download the Crucial Storage Executive tool and update the firmware to M3CR046. Since the firmware update I have installed Ubuntu and not experienced any more IO errors or timeouts from the drive.
Affordable and a great bit of kit.
Cloned to form 500Gb HDD in under 1h
As SSDs become cheaper, when I purchased this Crucial 1TB one it was needed for one of my old laptops, most peopke who have an older laptop will have noticed that they are now a bit on the slow side and might be thinking of buying a new one, I thought about it and then dismissed the idea and fitted an SSD instead, the difference the Crucial one has made is great, boot up is now less than 30 seconds and the machine runs as good as a new one, The Crucial SSD has not only rejuvenated my old lappy but also at least 10 – 12 others as well including a couple of desktops. My Crucial SSDs have been reliable, fast and affordable. Think about an SSD before you throw your old lappy away, OK there are other things that will speed up an old machine but these will make the biggest difference that you will be very pleased with.
My pc has the maximum memory but was still slow using a lot of hard disk. I bought this and things now run a lot faster applications load in seconds so a great by. Was not too expensive and very easy to install just swap a couple of cables. Where I did have a major problem was cloning my hard disk to the new drive using the recommended soft ware it just kept stopping with a fault condition. In the end I had to look for a different software to clone the hard drive but once that was done everything was plain sailing.
The performance is as good as advertised , which is as good as you will get from SATA, and what you would expect for the more premium offering from Crucial.
It’s not the cheapest for the same speed but in this case, I decided that I’d rather pay the extra and be more confident of reliability compare to other brands.
I bought it for my son who installed in his windows pc to use as a backup disc. Crucial components are always excellent quality and at a good price.
It’s a solid state heard drive from a good manufacturer. I’ve also used Samsung and I tend to decide on whichever is cheapest when I need a new drive.
Crucial do their own migration software (Acronis) available free on their website. It’s easy to use and makes an accurate and fast clone of your drive to allow you to swap the current system disk and your new disk. You can also make Backup Images and there is an upgraded (paid) version that does scheduled backups.
Crucial also have a rather good website which can scan your system and make recommendations for memory and drive upgrades. Prices there are competitive.
Use this as my main game drive and have no issues over the 2yrs i have had it. would recommend this if your looking to expand your storage and usually goes on sale a lot so a great deal for lots of fast storage
I was looking for an SSD drive to put into my PS4 pro to give it a longer life, because I noticed my media started to corrupt and some, not important saves, started to corrupt as well. This SSD fit very well and was easy to put in. Does the job for me with plenty of space for any games I want to start up faster on there. 🙂 I have no issues as I’ve had it for a while now and have not had any problems at all. It’s all good.
So after much searching and decisions I went with this SSD for my mini pc. So far it’s going great, I don’t use it as a boot drive just a game drive and even though it’s a sata connection it is still faster than my external usb drives. It serves its purpose well. I’ve had no issues at all. Very glad I went with this drive.
This is my third Crucial MX500 in a few years, each time only replacing for an increase in storage.
This time it was to upgrade from 500Gb to 1TB for my main system drive. I upgraded using the free version Acronis True Image for a spectacularly process.
Having been an SSD user for the past 10 years, I’m not seeing the lightening jump I first saw when moving from HDD to SDD, but can still remember monumental leap in drive speed when I did.
I find the MX500’s very reliable, whilst not the fastest SATA SSD’s available, I prefer reliability. I actually bought two drives this time and also migrated in a more sedate fashion (copy/paste) my media files (documents/pictures/ebooks/music etc) from a dedicated HDD to this SSD. The upgraded 500gb unit has also been replaced as a scratch drive for my Photoshop / Premiere work, so I’m totally free of mechanical drives now.
Next upgrade will be to PCI4.0 M.2, when Mrs M gives me the go ahead for the upgrade to a 13th Gen i7 setup! – LOL
I’ve been editing photos using Kingston ssd’s for quite a few years, ordered a 2tb mx500 tried it in a mid range pc and a laptop, what a difference! Everything is much faster, Sending a pic to my Mrs on FB messenger used to take about 10 seconds after I hit send before her phone notification went off, now it’s pretty much immediately, maybe a second at most compared to 5-10 seconds with every Kingston I’ve got ( quite a few ) , exporting images is probably 5-10 times quicker, boot up is within a few seconds, I can’t believe I didn’t know about these sooner.
This SSD is well worth the price, I expected to have to pay twice the price of this one,
Open up the box, take out the drive, plug it into the motherboard,, using the SATA cables (not supplyed}
that connected your HDD, close up the pc and thats it up and running.
If its going to be your main drive, you will have to re-install the OS again,
but if its a second, or more Drive, there is no more to be done.
I would have no problems recomending it, I am very happy with this purchase.
I have been at the end of my tether with my laptop as it was so slow it was practically unusable. I had formatted it so many times, defragged, cleaned, virus checked, everything that you could do. Windows updates just stopped you doing anything, even opening a word document. I was on the verge of buying a new laptop but was so puzzled, my laptop was well taken care of and has really good specs, I felt in my bones something wasn’t adding up. Anyway, stumbled across something saying about switching to ssd so I thought i’d give it a go before throwing my laptop away.
Well, it has transformed my laptop. Turns on seconds, loads everything so cleanly. I can now play games for hours which it would not run for a second before. It is also silent as the SSD is digital and has no moving parts. So no more whirling loading sound, it just works. And works fast. I bought a lead to connect it to my laptop via USB so I could clone my HDD to the new SSD before removing my HDD. This cloning software is recommended on the leaflet that comes with the SSD, you just download it and follow the steps. It took hours, so I left it doing its thing overnight and by the morning it was done. From here you unscrew the back of laptop, pop the HDD out and stick the new SSD in. Turn back on, and bang it works perfectly. I cannot express how happy I am that I can now use my laptop to its full potential. I am so so pleased.
I have now bought two of these SSD drives. I bought them from Amazon as it was chepaer than buying them from Crucial but I did check options and compatibility first on their site. I didn’t feel the need to buy trays to fix them in to my towers, as they are very light and they have no moving parts.
On my main PC, for the first SSD, I reinstalled Windows from scratch as it had been going so slow that I thought the hard drive was failing. I was able to easily partition the drive and later save my other data to the second partition. This PC is now over 12 years old and working better than when it was new.
I used the second SSD drive to replace a similary slow hard drive on a PC I had obtained from work. Under these circumstances, their IT support company always says they need to purchase replacement machines so they normally get thrown out. On this one, I used the cloning software, downloaded via the Crucial web site but did experience the problem reported by some others where it continued to report having a minute remaining. However, when I re-booted with just the SSD drive connected, it appeared to have worked OK. Being Windows 10, I was then able to do a fresh reinstal of the operating system, and again it’s now working better than when it was new.
Both PCs now start up in less than a minute!

Bought this in 2TB capacity to help speed up my PS4 Pro, as while happy with the games and graphics, the boot/loading times can be quite long (first world problems admittedly), the menu was not as fluid in use due to the OS bloating after many years of updates, and the latest games do suffer from stutter and graphics “pop” due to the sheer amount of data being called upon at any one time because of the complexity of some of the games now.
Installed this last night, very easy and painless, reinstalled the PS OS and left my games to download all the updates overnight. Turned her on this morning, wow, what a difference from first impressions. The unit booted and the user login screen appeared about as instantly as I think could be possible, and scrolling through the menu is now smooth and fluid again. I haven’t had a chance to play any games yet, but I have high hopes.
This unit from what I can see is the best value, whilst it’s not the cheapest, it is the lowest priced drive with DRAM, which from my research as the key to maintaining the high speed of the drive when constant demand is placed on it. It’s also not the absolute quickest, but is much faster than the capability of the PS4 Pro can ever demand of it.
I will update when I’ve had more use out of it, but as I said, fist impressions are
I purchased the 1TB version, during black friday, to replace a 500GB version of this SSD that I had in my XPS 15 (7590) laptop. For those who also have this laptop: you can add another SSD (SATA) in addition to the nvme SSD installed in your XPS 15, if you have the model with the smaller battery. You will need a SATA connector cable (and some rubber rails or something similar) to do this however, as Dell does not provide you with one, despite including a 2.5 inch drive cage.
I use this drive for games and storing images, photos, videos etc after I am done with editing them. It works well for this purpose however there are a few things to note about this SSD:
– The Crucial MX500 is a TLC SSD, which basically means that its writing speeds will not significantly diminish after your drive is x% full like the Samsung 870 QVO SSD (which is a QLC drive) for example.
– It is slightly more power hungry compared to other 2.5 inch SATA SSDs. If you find that your laptop’s battery is draining somewhat faster after installing this SSD, this is why. However, since its writing/read speeds don’t decline over time like with other SSDs in this tier, I think it is still worth it.
One more thing to note about the MX500, specifically ones sold on Amazon (from my own personal experience):
I already had a 500GB version that I also bought on Amazon over a year ago which has been working fine. However, ever since I installed this 1TB model about 2 weeks ago, I have been experiencing odd issues with my laptop. My laptop started playing up as if it was infected with malware (randomly started opening up Adobe Premiere Pro, task manager etc). I am usually very careful when browsing online and have enough knowledge to avoid infecting my PCs with malware etc. Nevertheless, I did several scans with Malwarebytes as well as an Antivirus program just in case. Everything came back clean. So I looked around in my reg and log files to try to see what was the issue. In the end, I ended up taking this 1TB drive out and putting my old 500GB one in. Rebooted and it seemed fine. A day later, I swapped it to the 1TB again, and my laptop acted oddly again for a few seconds. It seems to have settled now and I’m not experiencing anymore problems.
I am still not a 100% sure whether it was this 1TB drive that was causing the problem but it looks like it might have been.
I did not experience this kind of problem with MX500 SSDs bought from other places though and I have seen a few reviews here on Amazon claiming a similar thing happened to them so it might be the batch in Amazon’s stock that is having these issues. So if you do buy the 1TB version off of here, be sure to back up any important files just in case.
