4 bolts attached cables and ready to go. Heavy but that’s what the self propelled capability is for. Started first touch of the button. Would definitely recommend this for none to use.
I have a large garden and had to replace an older petrol mower that packed up. I have been really pleased with this purchase. It starts first time every time and cuts reliably. It is great to have the electric start (I have back problems) but also to have the manual pull start as a back-up. I only needed to top up the battery charge once in a whole season – the onboard ‘in use’ charging took care of the rest. Very happy with this purchase.
Throttle set at low speed doesn’t move with stick or manual adjustment . Dose move the choke and revs if move the carburettor manually but not on the stick
My lawn took a battering over summer 2022 in the UK, due to the hot weather and kids. I decided to renovate it and realised the old Flymo wasn’t going to be suitable – mainly because you can’t accurately control the cut height. I chose this particular Hyundai model for the height control, width of cut, self propulsion, variable drive speed and electric start (it does start also start easily on a single pull of the cord too). The photos are taken 4 weeks apart – keeping the cut height around 2 inches has improved the health of the lawn and it looks great. The mower doesn’t have a rear roller but still produces faint stripes. I got stronger striping by adding a Toro striping roller, which sits behind the grass box. Time will tell if the mower remains reliable – so far it’s been perfect. On the downside, it’s very heavy! 40+ kg means it would be very difficult to use in a terraced garden or anywhere you had to lift it.
This is a very good lawnmower I know we all love our grass but mine got to long and I buy petrol lawnmower and they wouldn’t cut the grass down I buy this lawnmower it didn’t even know it was doing it it didn’t cut out didn’t brake it is the best it is grate on fuel if you are looking for a big lawnmower what can take on anything this is the mower you need. The push button start makes life so much easier the box is not heavy when full make life more better so you can spend more time cutting your grass without keep stopping because of it 70 l box from me this lawnmower gets 10 stars
We bought this heavy duty mower as we have alot of lawn to cut and its uneven. This mower is excellent and it’s now a breeze to cut the lawns. A tiny bit heavy to get out of the garage but once started no problems then as it self propels. I love the gears to change the speed. The only small criticism is that the length between the shortest cutting and the next up seems big and our lawn is too uneven to cut on the shortest so needs cutting every 5 or so days (field grass grows ridiculously fast)
This is the first petrol lawnmower I have owned and once set up I was very impressed with the immediate start up and ease of operation. Significantly reduced the time taken to mow a large lawn and excellent grass collection/disposal.
This is a big mower with a lot of power, assembly was simple and it came with everything needed including the oil for engine, just buy petrol and your ready to go. The mower has 4 speed gears and came with 70L grass box, mulching plug, side chute, battery charger, spare starter button, and spark plug key. It is a heavy mower so when not using drive system it is more difficult to manoeuvre around but not too difficult. I pleased with my purchase which came with 3 year warranty and a ton of support links and good user manual. A problem with website preventing me from adding pictures
Awesome lawnmower with electric start, my wife would struggle to start our old lawnmower but even just using the pull start on this engine is easy. Feels and looks like I’m cutting the grass with a ferrari. Its quite heavy but easy to maneuver around and the self drive is perfect as you can adjust from the 4 speeds. I have a 3rd of an acre of garden and I cut it half the time of my old lawnmower, less emptying too as it really does compact it all in to the collection box. Now I want all the other machines in this range as they look so cool.
I really wanted the pull cord start version but after ordering I was notified that it wouldn’t be delivered until late May. I duly cancelled, paid an extra 70 and ordered this electric start version. If I’d known then what I know now I may well have waited. The pull cord version was re-advertised for delivery in late March (next week) a day after my new order was dispatched……
Having set up and used the lawnmower once, I can say there’s nothing particularly wrong with the machine. It is considerably heavier than my previous lawnmower, a 20 year old 51cm self propelled Lawn King. It does however feel much more powerful, more likely to be able to make it through challenging long wet grass. My major gripe with it is to do with the electric start. My shed, where I store it, is at the bottom of a staircase across the lawn and down a slope at the bottom of my garden. A considerable distance from an electrical socket. This is a problem because the battery used to start the mower cannot be removed for charging. This means I need to run an exceptionally long extension lead down to the lawnmower to charge the battery for it’s 6 hour charge after every 10th use, which won’t always be practical given the vagaries of Scottish weather. The other issue is with the charger itself or perhaps it’s just the instructions. There is nothing to say what the flashing red/green LED on the charger means. At various points it was solid red then solid green, flashing red/green back to solid red???? Logic tells me that solid green should be fully charged but who knows?
Despite these gripes the electric start kicked it into life first time and it cut my grass. I hope it doesn’t succumb to problems with dampness when the weather returns to normal service.
After 10 years tackling a very large uneven lawn my high end wide bladed Hayter mower finally bit the dust last Autumn, so I’ve been on the lookout for a similar replacement. The Hayter was built like a tank but had a pull chord start that took some pulling and at 63 I was hoping to be able to afford an electric start mower. Most large blade self propelled electric start mowers cost a fortune and were well beyond my budget.
This Hyundai ticked all the boxes and was an incredibly reasonable price so I hesitated for ages, thinking it was likely to be a bad purchase. I couldn’t have been more wrong!
It arrived within a couple of days in a well packed carton. It says it comes without oil and you need to buy a bottle, but in fact there’s a separate bottle of mower oil supplied in the carton. I should also mention that there has been some negative review comments about the guarantee, but you no longer need to fill in a form within 30 days, their website confirms your purchase is your guarantee (see screengrab attached).
The mower was incredibly easy to put together, all you need to do is attach the handle mechanism with a few bolts, add the cup holder (a piece of genius bling!) with a couple of screws, hook on the two cables, add oil and fuel, and you’re ready to go. From opening box to start up and mow was about 20 mins.
The mower is actually incredibly very well built and sturdy, and it looks fantastic. It’s recommended you charge the small starter battery (mains charging lead supplied) for 6 hours but mine fired up first time straight out of the box.
All the settings and controls are very light and easy to use. Unless you’re mowing Wimbledon I wouldn’t recommend the lowest setting, as it really is tight to the ground and won’t forgive any humps or dips. Level 2 is perfect, even for a first cut. On the speed side I’d also avoid the top speed (4), as this really jumps forward with a bit of a kick, but (3) is perfect for a smart pace across the lawn.
As you can see from the before and after pictures I have a very large undulating lawn that actually has several crests and levels to it. The old Hayter used to stick on the slopes but this beauty just whizzed over everything without a blip. As it was the first cut of the year after a long mowerless autumn and winter, I decided to save endless grass bag emptyings and put the mulching plug in instead. The Hayter was a mulcher but it still used to dump unsightly clumps all over the place. This machine didn’t leave a trace of grass and the mulched material was very fine. I’d recommend mulching as it’s the right eco-thing to do and with this mower I’ll stick with it as empty bags is a chore.
Coming back to the cup holder I thought this was just a gimmick but it also came into its own when I was at the far end of the garden!
The final piece of brilliance on this machine is the little hose attachment nozzle on the topside. I didn’t think this was serious, but I followed the instructions, connected my garden hose to it, turned the water on full blast, and started up the mower. To my amazement the machine cleaned itself! One of the worst aspects of cutting the lawn with my old heavy mower was trying to turn it on its side afterwards to brush off the cack, without the oil or the petrol all spilling out. 10/10 Hyundai for this brilliant idea.
Oh, yes, the start button also cleverly pops out so you can prevent curious kids from starting it up.
I’ve now had the machine for a fortnight and have cut the grass four times with it. The results are amazing and it’s an absolute pleasure to use. I’d recommend this machine to anyone with a larger than average lawn who needs a very well priced, robust and easy to operate mower.
FEBRUARY 2023 UPDATE
I cleaned the mower carefully and gave the battery a full charge last November before putting this mower away in a clean, dry garden shed for the winter. Pulled it out this morning, filled it with petrol, checked the oil (fine) pressed the start button, and off she went first time. My large lawn was already pretty thick with new, fresh growth, a badger had dug loads of holes and there were old leaves everywhere but this incredible machine just blasted through it all (see last two pix).. It mulches really fine so I got a great improver for the lawn from all the leaves it pulped. At the end of the run the lawn was pretty even and perfect. All I’ll need to do in a few days time when the mulching clumps have gone, is a quick, light trim and we’re ready for the summer. Once again the machine cleaned really easily with a hose nozzle on blast – the plastic parts are very non-stick, and the self cleaning facility is amazing. My only very tiny niggle was that the nozzle for attaching your garden hose to the mower is a bit stiff, so I solved this by cutting an 2ft length of garden hose with connectors each end. I leave one end permanently attached to the mower and just stash the length of hose by the basket when the mower’s in use. A power clean takes about 5 mins and leaves the underside pretty perfect. I’m also impressed that nothing has so far shown signs of rust or tarnish. Best 450 I ever spent!!
I love it. Easy to assemble – it took me ten minutes and that included me searching for a 13mm spanner! Great accessories, easy to change height and speed, and the push-button start works like a dream. No more cord-pull starting. The weight is expected for this mower which is used for a large garden with flat and steep areas to negotiate. The drive really does work uphill so no more pushing.
I went online to register the three-year warranty due to a previous review of the product but was pleasantly surprised to find that since 1 February 2020 there is no need to register – just retain proof of purchase which is easy with Amazon.
Was easy to assemble and easy to start up. It would have been useful to know in advance that Hyundai do not recommend using normal unleaded petrol particularly due to the change in unleaded fuel to E10. We were however able to access the recommended fuel from a local supplier without difficulty albeit it is more expensive. The machine is substantially built but is heavy and as a result changing direction can be a bit of a challenge. The main downside we have found is that if you stop the mower for any reason then attempt to restart on occasion the mower will not restart as the blade sticks due to grass cuttings adhering to the bottom of the mower. You then have to clean it out before continuing. Overall however we feel this has been a good purchase and we would recommend it for use in larger gardens.
Very nice machine, cuts beautifully and starts on the button even from the very first fill up of petrol. Its got 4 speeds but have to say the slowest is still quite fast. Very solidly built with a great cutting width…and looks the part although not sure I will ever use the drinks holder though!
There are some negatives, the flap covering the side shute is a very heavy spring and caught my fingers badly the first time I used it and the side shute sticks out so far that it tends to catch on uneven ground and can come off ( I use the mulch function on a very uneven bank to be fair and would probably work better on the flat) . It is very heavy but no more than expected for a steel based unit, but it is difficult to maneuver round corners, and the clutch is a bit ‘all or nothing’. But excellent value for money and built to last.
Purchased this lawnmower to replacement for an old machine which even after servicing was becoming harder and harder to start and not getting any younger I thought I would try an electric start model. After some research and base on the size of garden this product seemed the best option. It arrived within a few days of order and was easy to assemble. It is quite heavy and needs at least two people to lift it out of the box. Height adjustment is almost effortless and the drinks holders are a bit of a novelty but for a large garden like mine I can see it being very handy. The machine seems extremely well built and with care I can see this lasting many years. Due to the weather I have not been able to use it in for any length of time so I cannot comment it’s performance.
Took about 30 mins to build but my advice is to use the handbook than the quick build instructions as it gives more details and better pictures.
Took longer to put the oil in than build it, as at first didn’t know how much to put it so added it bit at a time. If you actually look in handbook at back in the specifications, it tells you how much oil it takes.
Did my first cut and my first impressions are this, even speed 4 is slower than I am used to, cut level handle is great idea but soon found out that if you try to cut it too short when mulching you do leave a trail of grass. By bringing it up one level it alleviated this
My question is how do you register the machine with Hyundai for the extra 2 years, as I have read other posts saying that if not registered they won’t cover repairs. Also do normal garden machinery repair centres service these machines?????
It is a well-constructed and robust mower. although, it is a heavy machine and not for the faint-hearted. However, It is easy to use with a good speed variation level and the electric starter motor is great. The 70 ltr grass collection box is a good size for a large lawn but replacing it after emptying is a fiddle because the bar securing the box in place is not easily accessible and should have been made with a more prominent fitting. Not enough allowance was made for the grass cuttings obscuring the fittings.
Self-propelling feature works very well. I would recommend it for a large garden (e.g. 100ft by 40ft). I can’t speak about durability because we have only used it once, but it looks good and certainly does the job. It makes mowing a lot easier.
I had complained in an earlier post about the customer service – difficulty in contacting the seller. I was later able to get responses from the seller through the help of Amazon and they made the change I requested, a bigger mower, which was helpful.
Over the years i have purchased many lawnmowers that state that they do this and they do that, but they never live up to expectations. So i decided i would give Hyundai a try and i am so glad i did, the machine arrived and the first thing i noticed was how well it was packed with plenty of support so the mower couldn’t move about. Assembly took about 20 minutes from unpacking to having it running.
The electric start is a bonus especially when you are regularly emptying the grass box and the 4 forward speeds enable you to cut long grass in a slow speed and shorter grass in the fastest setting which enables you to get a good finish to any lawn.
Overall this is a good machine for the price even though the price dropped 50 the day after i bought it.
Great mower now i have resolved a problem. I had got it all set up & filled with oil & it started 1st time, but i got half way through cutting my lawn & see oil spitting out the dipstick tube. No problem after i fitted it back on. A few minutes later the same thing & the mower was covered in oil. After some investigation we had noticed somthing in the tapered dipstick tube. It was an O-ring halfway down the tube off the dipstick cap. Fitted this back on & all is working fine now & the 1st cut was very quick with no effort at all.
My old mower was getting difficult to start with the pull cord and at 73 years old and having back trouble i wanted a mower that was easy to start.I went on the internet and looked at various makes and models and read about them, getting the information that i wanted, then i went on Youtube to watch demonstrations on the makes and models.Looking at them all i decided on purchasing The Hyundai HYM 510 SPE ,because of the good explanation video that Adrian gave.It was only 5 days from ordering to receiving. When it arrived i opened the box and was delighted of the quality and how well made it is.I can not use it yet due to the time of the year, but with the quality it is i can not see there being any problems. Can not wait to try it out,but first impressions i am highly delighted with my purchase.
Very pleased with this purchase. As a 68 year old I was getting to the stage where my old mower was taking the enjoyment out my regular grass cutting sessions, struggling to start with the pull handle, no drive system etc. So I researched and settled on this one. Assembly and set up was a breeze, check out the videos on You Tube they are worthwhile and will help. I agree with other reviewers that the machine is rather heavy, but quality materials ARE heavier. My old mower was a lot lighter but the HYM510SPE is not inordinately heavy just feels more robust. In use you will not notice the extra weight, unless you have lots of areas that you need to manoeuvre the mower manually. As an “old boy” I found it a joy to use. Controls are intuitive and easy to use. I found the handle height especially good. The finished lawn looked great, much improvement over my old mower due to the wider blade. I could go on but I guess you can get the drift. I will update this review once I have used it some more.
I bought this to replace and old Mountfield that had seized up. This is a heavier machine and I cut away the packing so that I could slide it out of the box. The engine starts easily with the electric start, and runs at a constant speed. Travelling speed is adjusted by a shift lever. The machine is fairly heavy, and there is a lot of drag when pulling it backwards ,although forwards is OK. I have to drag it over gravel to get it in and out of my garage, and there is too much drag pulling backwards for the wheels to turn. It cuts the grass well, both with the collector and with the mulching plug.
Because of the various areas of grass that I need to cut, I needed something strong and robust. I also have a shoulder problem that makes a pull start difficult. I decided that an electric start mower would be best for me but, relying on the electric start without a “Pull” backup did not appear sensible. I also thought that a mower with various driving speeds would be handy. For these reasons, I bought this particular mower that had all the features I required.
I found the mower easy to assemble and, although I did it all by myself, it would be advisable to have two people to remove it from its transport box. The mower works well; the height adjustment is easy and the engine is quiet enough so that I do not consider it necessary to wear ear protection.
The only problem is the weight of 45kg (add another 10kg if the collector is full of slightly damp grass). This makes manoeuvring around any odd shaped beds or obstructions quite hard work and should be a real consideration when making a decision on whether or not to buy. I have to bear in mind that I am 79, but think that I am about 50!
I bought this to replace a more expensive roller mower whose gearbox exploded after 10 years.
I chose the hyundai one as it seemed the best combination of price and ability. It copes fine with my bumpy 1/4 acre rear garden and having the mulching capability is nice when you dont want to collect up the cuttings. I need to try the side discharge as I also have another garden area which we let grow a bit wilder.
Having the electric start is great – no pulling the starter cord is a relief. The four speed drive is good – 4 is perhaps a bit fast – the slower speeds are great for fiddly bits.
And there are some useful videos on YouTube showing how to assemble it and how to service it.
I’ll come back a year down the road to comment on durability but there doesn’t appear to be any obvious issues
After using a sit on mower for 18 years decided to buy a push mower. I did a lot of research and eventually decided on this machine (I do also have 2 other Big Brand push mowers but never felt the Briggs&Stratton 149cc on both of those machines was strong enough). This machine though with a 196cc Hyundai engine is awesome, its a big wide cut & it has a bit of weight behind it but I don’t see that as an issue as the the power to manoeuvre is always there. The electric start is a god send, it comes with a simple plug in charger which easily charges up the battery. The build quality is very good, assembly took 15 minutes & with the supplied oil and fresh 4star fuel we was up and running in no time. Due to the sizes of my 3 lawns I have never been one for fine low cuts, I did try all the levels but the higher level 3 out of 4 suits my grass best – I don’t use my lawn for bowling. The dB noise level is less than the Briggs&Stratton 149cc which is pleasing to the ears & neighbours. The 2 drink holders are handy when u plan to be out for a fair bit of time. I found this machine as good alternative to the sit on mower and hope I get many years of service out of it.
This particular mower is a big beast and quite heavy to manoeuvre the multiple speed works great on uneven ground and the top speed cuts though the lawn at twice the pace of my old Mountfield petrol mower.
It comes with a side discharge chute and a mulching plug as well as a large collection box for the back.
To my surprise it also came with a bottle of oil.
I’ve used it twice in my 3rd acre garden my only niggle was it struggled a bit with the moss patches in the lawn on a low cut, so you might need to go over the grass a few times lowering the height each time.
The mower started first time out the box after charging the battery for 5 hours and putting in oil and petrol.
Again this is a heavy mower even although it is self propelled I don’t think it’s suitable for a person who doesn’t have good upper body strength.
I really like the features of this machine, in particular the mulching and side discharge facility, the four different speeds are a boon and the push button start is great,as I have a problem with my shoulder and the pull start would be a bit difficult for me. This is a very well built machine and my only real gripe, is that it is very very heavy, which makes it a little tricky to manoeuvre when the engine isn’t running. The cleaning facility whereby you can connect a hosepipe is a good idea, but you do need to leave it running for some period of time to really clean the underside. In fact, it’s probably just as easy to lift up the front and put the hose on it directly.
Wow, absolutely amazing improvement over my tired Mountfield, effortless starting, a very powerful engine and in speed 4 so much faster.
After breaking my collarbone I couldn’t have used my old mower due to the considerable effort involved in the recoil starter; with the grass growing frantically by early March due to my recovery; I feel I purchased this high quality Hyundai machine at the perfect time.
Assembly was straight forward using the easy to follow YouTube video, charging the starter battery was quicker than expected as the provided charger indicator soon changed from Red to Amber then Green.
It’s heavier than my previous 45cm mower, but with a 51cm blade it’s a bigger machine that appears to be well engineered and of course the battery is a very welcome addition.
From first use, starting is an absolute joy; cold start using the choke position single press – instant start! Then each time the 70l collection box was full, I emptied, refitted then performed a warm restart, first press every time without fail.
Four speed settings and several cutting heights are easy to select.
There is a slight lag in the disengagement of the driven rear wheels when the clutch bar is released, but it’s easily anticipated after experiencing it.
The garden hose connection feature is a good design idea to clean the cutter area and prevent grass residue build-up on the underside.
In summary I’m extremely impressed, for anyone like me who has sustained an arm/shoulder injury, or prefers the freedom of a powerful petrol mower, but is struggling with the nausea of trying to repeatedly tug the recoil starter mechanism; then this machine is the answer.
Like all blokes I dream about having a sit-on mower and having moved to a new house with a decent sized garden here was my chance. But, Ilwhen comparing the highest rated self-propelled mowers vs the sit-one I just couldn’t justify the 1200 price difference. So home comes this Hyundai. It better be good! Out of the box at a little heavy at first – but this is my first petrol mower so allow me some adjustment. It comes largely pre-built so just a few bits to bolt together, pretty straight forward although the instructions are not the most unambiguous I’ve ever seen. Spark plug located, oil in, petrol in, let’s go. But wait, I need to charge the battery for 5hrs first! This will p**s on my parade. Oh well I’ll have press the start button and pretend. However the battery was charged already (despite the instructions assuring me if wouldn’t be’. So off I went – a happy cutter. The 4 speed adjustment is great, I was able to slow it right down while I operated under L-Plate conditions and then as I got all teenage and cocky I unleashed top gear. It’s quite fast, as could be seen by the shredded plants lying murdered in the flower bed where I’d gone off-road. I had a bit of left/right lever coordination to perfect. But, I’ll be whizzing around the garden by next summer. The cutting height is more than adequate – I ended up raising it to about the midpoint for an autumn cut with lots of leaves provided a challenge the machine was more than man enough for. One observation, the grass collector is big. This is great for a lasy so and so like me however it does weigh the reaper down even more and I t will leave wheel indents in your lawn that hang around for a few days. This is good but f you want to perfect you straight plough lines and quite like the effect.
So a very new and pleasant experience. Time will tell if my infatuation turns into the real thing and our relationship blossoms in the spring however early signs are promising.
This item was delivered a day early and luckily the driver was a strong man because, being somewhat elderly, I couldn’t lift the box. Having manoeuvred it out I found it very easy to assemble having followed the well made uTube video instruction. Only one silly problem I found it very hard to fit the grass collection box and it required two phone calls to the support line to sort it out, it appears the frame had been somewhat distorted in transit. The engine started first time, easy to use though it is rather heavier than my previous mower, so turning at the end of a line is quite hard work for me. I don’t think my wife would manage it. I shall just have to do it myself! No doubt I shall get used to it as it’s a fine looking and performing machine.
Its early days yet, but I used it for the first time today after setting it up last night.
Very simple to setup, took 10 or 15 mins.
It started straight away without any problems.
The variable speed is great, I used it mostly on the slowest setting today since the Grass was rather long.
The mulching option worked really well and was impressed, dont suppose Ill use the bag much.
To set the different cutting heights is a Doddle, one lever sets all 4 wheels.
The electric Start is excellent, just a breeze to stop and start.
I hope this machine lasts the test of time as Im really impressed with it.
Its early April 2020 now, and the Belt Guard is broken, made by flimsy plastic.
I struggled to find a replacement online, trying to contact hyundai was a nightmare. I eventually found Genpower Ltd had the parts.
So I was shocked at how hard it was to get parts.
Running good again, but only 4 stars because of the parts issue
I was looking for a self propelling mower that had a good reputation. Having not heard of Hyundai mowers i checked around. I looked at all the usual mowers and the HYM510SPE had everything that i wanted. I have a ride on mower but it is useless for narrow paths, edges and under low hanging bushes. Having used the 510 a few times now I can recommend it. Build quality is good, as is the cut it gives. Grass collectors are always a bit small no matter what size they are. Bad points however are, the manual which imparts almost no information. The assembly instructions are hidden away under the section for “Grass collecting mowing”? Tell me approximately how much oil I need to put into the thing instead of telling me “DO NOT overfill”. Heavy, very heavy. I think it comes in around 48Kgs about 105lbs. Not great for somebody like me with a bad back. Also, and I may have missed out on how to do this but i have looked in the useless manual. How can I move the mower using the self propelling element without the blades going? It would be great to be able to get from the shed to the lawn without trying to cut the paving stones. The 510 has a connection for a hose which when used with the blades going cleans the plate. Again not mentioned in the manual.
I ordered this mower following several favourable reviews. Most important for me was the push button start. While I can pull a cord (and this mower does have one as back up) it is a pain to have to keep doing this if one is going to mow scattered sections around a large site, moving the mower, powered down so the blades are stopped, between. To my delight, the machine started up first time with the choke and every time without the choke afterwards. The fuel consumption is frugal, the noise level acceptable and the vibration minimal. Of course, fuel stabiliser added to the petrol is essential for four stroke garden tools if you don’t want the carburettor gummed up. The ‘dead man’s handle’ is easy to use as is the drive engagement control; both are broad horizontal bars gripped to the handle. The mower has four driven speeds and is reasonably light enough to just be pushed, if necessary. The height adjuster must be spring-loaded because the deck is easy to raise. The cut is good although, at the lowest setting, it won’t achieve cricket pitch perfection like my other mower. I found the instructions straightforward although I was left with two small black plastic bits until I realised that they fitted the back of the mower to hold the flap out when mulch mowing. I haven’t tried that yet although the plastic bits can be left in place even if the grass box is on. The grass box is easy to empty, having a flat unobstructed bottom. If there was one thing I would change it would be to have a roller at the back instead of two wheels, not because I want stripes but because the mower, at it lowest cut height, can ground itself on uneven bits of the lawn. It is quite a sight seeing the powered rear wheels spinning in the air. However, a powered roller would result in a radical redesign of the grass chute at the rear so fair enough.
I’ve been impressed so far with the Hyundai HYM510SPE mower i purchased. Despite a late delivery due to being out of stock, the mower finally arrived and has been put to use. First impressions are it is powerful, quiet and easy to use. Both the electric and recoil start functions work well and the self propelling feature is great. I have a third of an acre to mow and this made relatively short work of it.
Some negatives, the instruction manual is almost useless, you’re better off following the video tutorial on YT. The hose connecting port does not seem to fit my hose adapter either but perhaps these adapters aren’t a universal size as i thought they were. And finally the catcher basket is a tad small given the size of the mower itself, but that’s a pretty minor niggle to be honest.
After a lifetime of Briggs and Stratton (and one Honda), it was difficult to venture into something new, but sometimes you have to try and this fits the bill for my lawn’s awkward slopes and terrain. This is not a lawn mower for Granny to manage, although the push button start is something she could handle. Heavy? Yes it is, but a 21 inch mower with a steel deck is always going to be heavy and I was not looking for lightweight. The mower powers up some steep slopes un-fazed and the engine always has more in reserve if I need it. I watched a YouTube video to assemble it although the user manual was adequate. Just don’t forget it does not ship with oil, so be sure to take care of that before you start the engine. It is easy for me to catch things on brambles and wild roses. The cable runs from the operator controls are probably fine for most users, but a couple of loosely fastened ties I added here and there make the clippings catcher easier to manage and I don’t have to worry about snagging the cables on anything vengeful. This machine is as durable as anything twice the price and its performance is underwritten by a three year warranty. What’s not to like? I am well pleased.
Very pleased with this lawnmower. Perfect size for my 3/4 acre garden. Easy to start with the electric starter, and so far I’ve started it 22 times on one charge and still loads of power left in the battery. Goes up the slopes with ease and very low use on fuel, it’s not as noisey as I thought it would be and I don’t need ear guards as it’s a nice low pitch sound unlike 2 stroke engines. Does a great job and also looks really stylish and modern.
I recommend this to anyone with a large garden and slopes. Great work Hyundai.
Update 19/04/2019
Just to let you all know this is still going strong and running great, best lawnmower I’ve owned and well worth buying. No issues at all.
Update 8/9/2020
Been using this for 2 years now and it’s still going strong. No problems at all and preforms like a champ. Just wanted to update to show it’s reliability and I’m still very impressed. Worth it’s money without a doubt.
Update 4/4/2021
My lawnmower is now coming upto 3 years old and still going strong. Kept in the shed when not used and still looks like new, no rust or problems what so ever. Starts first time every time and really is worth every penny. It’s a beast that wants to live on and on.
Still recommend by me.
Update 9/4/2022
Out comes this beast again for the 4th year and still going strong, only thing I’ve had to do is change the oil and sharpen the blades, other than that it starts first time and runs perfectly, stored in a shed each winter with no sign of rust. I feel this will go on for many years to come. Best purchase eve
We needed to replace our 20yr old 4hp Petrol lawnmower and so we decided upon this model – the Hyundai HYM510SPE, particularly being drawn to its electric start feature. (No more pulling the starter cord the usual 5x or more to get my current mower started).
Having watched the five minute Hyundai assembly guidance video on the Amazon webpage (7th icon down on the LHS), I decided to order it and it was delivered just 3 days later. I also ordered some engine oil (10W40) for it too, as it is shipped without oil (the machine needs less than a litre of oil).
Once unpacked, I plugged in the battery charger (similar in size to a mobile phone type charger) and charged the small battery (designed to be charged in situ). The charger simply plugs in to a basic battery housing, by means of a ‘barrel’ type connector. The instructions suggest an initial battery charge of 5-6 hours.
We then:
1. Assembled the mower handle (4x bolts and associated ‘wing-nuts’).
2. Placed the starter cord in to its quiescent ‘ready to use’ position.
3. Inserted the two plastic lugs at the rear of the mower (which are used to keep the rear flap partially open) allowing the cut grass to exit.
4. Added the 0.6l of oil
5. Filled with petrol.
Before attempting to start the mower:
1. I set the drive-speed control to its slowest setting (‘1’ position)
2. Set the ‘run/choke’ control to the ‘cold-start’ position.
3. Set the cutting deck-height to its highest setting, using the simple adjustment leaver.
The mower was now ready to start, so placing the OPC (Operator Present Control) lever against the main handle, I then pressed the start button for a second or two.
The machine burst in to life. So very much easier than messing around with a starter cord. A great feature!
With the engine now running I immediately moved the ‘run/choke’ control to its ‘run’ position and proceeded to start to mow the lawn.
The first mowing of the lawn was perfect and whilst the machine is quite heavy, its 5hp, 173cc engine driving the rear wheels (and the 21″ cutting blade) made using the mower easy. I then inserted the ‘mulching plug’ and the resulting cut was probably the best I’ve ever had. So In summary – very good value and highly recommended.
I spent a lot of time choosing a mower which would suit my needs, as I wanted something that would cope with the conditions. Wet, lots of slopes in different directions and coping with different lawn types, all on 3/4 of an acre. So the 4 in1 system, means I can either dump or collect the grass depending on location and conditions. The electric start I was a bit skeptical about the usefulness, as I read previous reviews stating it was hit and miss. I’ve used the mower three times now, and haven’t had to use the pull start yet, this was with multiple stopping and starting due to emptying. Mower starts quickly and easily. The four speed is good with smooth transitions between them, although there isn’t much between them. Probably could’ve got away with calling it a two speed. That’s more of an observation than a criticism. Biggest issue where the star is lost, is with assembly. Instructions were pointless. I have a technical background, so it didn’t take to long to build, approximately 30 mins, but I was left with two little black plastic wedges which took me about an hour to figure out where they lived(Rear discharge to keep the chute slightly open) There was literally no mention of these anywhere. Hyundai also have a number of videos on how to assemble these, so there’s always a way. Overall, it cuts grass and starts, stops when I need it to.
very happy with product bit on the heavy side but looks well made and easy to assemble
4 bolts attached cables and ready to go. Heavy but that’s what the self propelled capability is for. Started first touch of the button. Would definitely recommend this for none to use.
Mower does a good job with plenty of flexibility for speed and cutting height. Quite cumbersome in tight corners.
So far so good and I’m happy with my purchase.
