Brought this as a back up drive for my desktop, laptop and another HDD with my photo collection. Really easy to use as reasonably quick to transfer data. The blue light is a bit excessive but in my case its housed out of the way so makes no difference. The HDD needs a power supply as it runs constantly whilst connected . The thing feels bomb proof as the case is really solid and the rubber feet on the underside really do cut down on the sound of the disc spinning.
Really Glad to buy this, after searching I found this is the fastest external hard drive and very happy to get 250+ read and write speed. It delivered exactly as it says.
As I need to regularaly backup tons of GB of data, and external SSD still being crazy expensive, this was the perfect choice.
Bought this to store photos and it does this very well
Excellent bit of kit which feels really rugged. Build quality is superb. Super silent and very powerful. Does the job brilliantly.
This is a fantastic drive for professional users and allows me to backup my NAS, which is full of 3D renders. For the money, you’ll be hard pushed to find a better drive. There is one really odd and frustrating issue – the light! It’s huuuuge and makes it look like there’s a rave happening in our home office. A stable blue light would be fine but when it’s connected it blinks constantly. I would highly advise people not to buy it if it’s for their bedroom.
I’ve been looking for a SSD based storage box to replace my SAN for some time but the cost was just too high so I bought this instead as a stop gap. 10TB is reasonable amount of storage but there are two things which have surprised me.
Firstly it works really well with Apple Mac Mini (and therefore probably all Macs) – I don’t get those annoying errors saying the device wasn’t ejected properly – regardless of if I reboot the Mac or use the sleep function, the drive is available and connected when the Mac comes to life, no errors or delays.
Secondly the speed ! It’s much faster than any other external hard drive I’ve had. My Mac Mini has a Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 port being an M1 Mac Mini and although this drive doesn’t support USB4 or Thunderbolt connections, it does enable it to run at full 10Gbit/s of USB 3.2 gen 2, which is the same headline speed at 10Gbit Ethernet, which is not really directly comparable, but does mean the the interface is never going to be the limiting factor, the speed limiter will be the disk and Lacie have fitted a fast disk which is giving me well over 220 MBytes/s read and write mixed file sizes. This is impressive for a spinning disk.
Given the speed, the price and the build quality which is great (and I can’t hear a fan) this is very good value for money.
Transfer speed through USB-C fluctuated heavily between 220mbps and 130mbps, averaging probably about 170mbps.
I did for some reason think that this would have a USB3 port which is does not. My video shows the LaCie being used on a high end laptop with a USB-C. I will need to buy a PCIe card to get better functionality on my server.
Provided this hard drive lasts me, I’d consider this a good quality buy. It feels solid and the metal casing gives is that nice cold metal feel.
This is a profession storage hard disc. Right from the moment of delivery, the driver was very polite, to the point of opening the packaging and box inside everything was well organised as one would expect from a premium product. Instructions and installation could was very easy and the unit was up and running within minutes. It is quiet and unobstrusive. I am more than pleased both with Amazon’s postage and delivery service, and with this product. I have no hesitation is recommending this unit to would be purchasers. Thank you Amazon.
This external hard-drive sits next to my iMac and works really well. I had to turn it sideways due to the brightness of the blue operating indicator, but it works really quick. I gave it one star for portability because its not designed to do that as it needs its own electric supply. Very pleased.
Quiet and good capacity and speed for the price. Hope it is as reliable as my other Lacie drives.
I got this drive to replace my old G-Drive which I used for photo editing (Lightroom/Photoshop) and I have been very happy with it. Speeds are good if not even better than on a regular USB-C/USB-A G-Drive and actually I like the fact the drive is positioned horizontally. This takes a little bit less space next to my monitor.
Pros:
– Great speed
– Loving the portrait orientation
– Well built
– Very quiet in use
Cons:
– The blue light is way too bright
– Power charger makes annoying noise when plugged in and the hard drive isn’t in use
– Doesn’t have an ON/OFF button
Summary:
Overall I’m very happy with the hard drive and it’s speed. I have had it now for several months and haven’t had any issues with it. So only time will tell how long this will last. Like I mentioned in cons section the blue light is way too bright and it’s super distracting. Luckily you can easily fix this by putting a tape over it and problem solved.
For some reason pretty much all of the Lacie products that I have owned have this annoying noisy power adapter issue. When the drive is plugged and not in use the power-adaptor makes this annoying constant tiny squeaky sounds which I just cannot stand. None of the G-Drives do that and they also have the ON/OFF button too which is useful. But when in use Lacie is very quiet and actually a bit quieter than G-Drives in my opinion. If Lacie were to fix the squeaky power adaptor noise I would give this instantly 5 start even though it misses the ON/OFF button.
I’ve used LaCie’s storage products on my Mac systems for literally decades and have always found them excellent performers and highly reliable. The same applies to this unit. It’s also excellent value for money.
However I would draw your attention to the description, which is a little misleading. From the wording you might imagine that this is a Thunderbolt 3 drive. It is not. It is, however, capable of being connected to a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port, which is not quite the same thing. The drive is a USB-C drive, and USB-C is in many ways a subset of Thunderbolt 3. So you can connect it to a Thunderbolt 3 port but it is not in itself a Thunderbolt 3 drive. It only has the one port so you cannot daisy-chain it anyway.
If it actually WAS a Thunderbolt 3 drive with two ports it would have been even more useful than it is (and would no doubt cost more!).
It is really good itself. Quiet. Does not get warm. Does not vibrate etc. It comes in with all possible plugs I could think of as well which can be easily changed which is AMAZING. The software is simple to understand and so far, worked well.
It has 1 semi-con and one real con.
Semi-con – It is really heavy for how small it is. Not that you wont be able to lift it but surprisingly heavy.
REAL con is the BLUE LIGHT on the front. It is extremely strong and cannot be turned off. You either have to cover it, paint it over or disassemble the device and somehow remove the led. Not only its constantly ON but it also rapidly flashes every now and then and when PC/Laptop is off, it will be off BUT it will still do that occasional flashing for no reason.
So far it worked without any problems and the storage is big so that is fine. It mostly just comes to that damn light. It has its own software but you cannot disable the light which is sort of silly. Would be little better if it was not for the BRIGHT BLUE colour of it…
People complain this is loud but when did you last have a silent spinning disk?
I ordered this 6TB LaCie D2 Professional as additional storage, I had a 4TB LaCie drive that was nearly full so I wanted another fast drive with more space, this and the LaCie toolkit allows you to backup all the contents on an existing drive so they’re mirror copies.
Very pleased with this drive and how quickly it allows you to access the files on it.
Using Black Magic Disk Drive Test I’m getting 230m read and 220m write speeds, I’ve ordered the Thunderbolt adapter which should allow a bit more speed.
It copied the 3.8TB worth of photos and a Lightroom Catalog over completely in 3h58m using Chronosync, really pleased with it.
I will never be without a Lacie drive again. I sold my orginal pair as I upgraded my machine and it no longer had thunderbolt connectors. So I thought, lets go for something a bit cheaper like a Western Digital MyBook.
The god of irony landed and now less than 12 months after buying my WD drive I’m having to take everything off it as it is dog slow with an Apple Macbook Pro. Even transferring off it is slow, it’s like it doesnt want to be sent away.
The Lacie on the other hand is gobbling up data as super speeds via a USB C connection which works incredibly well with my Mac and from the other connector it looks like it will also work well on my Windows 10 laptop.
I will never be so foolish as to move to another brand again.
Don’t be mislead by the name, this is NOT a Thunderbolt 3-rated drive. USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 connectors are the same, so yes, you can plug this into the Thunderbolt port on your computer, but you will NOT get Thunderbolt 3 transfer speeds but USB 3 speeds. In practical terms, however, the physical speed of the drive tops out before the interface does, which in real-world performance translates to about 160MB/s. Also, you will not be able to daisy chain this to other devices as you can with Thunderbolt 3. For what it is, it’s a solid, quiet external drive.
Works well, can be portioned as expected for time machine etc. Very, very good Build quality… I knocked it over by accident… it dented the desk! No complaints, just my clumsy-ness. Great purchase rather than buying extra apple built in storage. (Im running Mac mini m 1 2020)
Does modern technology have to be this noisy? Make sure it’s not next to you all day!
I’ve always used LaCie external hard drives for my graphic design business, and found them to be reliable and well made. The d2 Pro is the best looking one yet, but I did experience random un-mounts with this drive. This issue is documented on the LaCie support site and is a Catalina specific issue, they have a firmware update download which fixes the problem. After applying the update I’ve had no problems – the drive has been faultless in operation, sleeps when the Mac sleeps, wakes without issue – super fast in use. Note – go to the US version of the LaCie site, the UK firmware link is broken.
A very robust enterprise level raid drive; Seagate enterprise hard drives inside which come with a five year guarantee and LaCie is now owned by Seagate this drive comes with UPS pickup and delivery if there’s any fault you can’t go wrong with this drive oh and free data recovery included to!
Easy to set up to the computer you are using. Can be used with either a type c to type c cable or a type c to type a cable.
The best and most reliable drives. Everything else not worth the risk. I use these drives to store and edit video clips for a very hungry social media portfolio and I have never been let down. Top notch.
Bought to provide additional backup support within home media. Drive is easy to set up and configure, speeds are as published so happy from that perspective. Would have like to see richer software from LaCie to manage data across network and drive compares but easily sourced from elsewhere!
I read the other reviews before buying this. Some complained about noise and it in use but I think that over the past ten years of buying all and sundry, reputable big bane drives, this 6tdb drive id the best I have ever used.
Easy to set up, free Adobe software trial (didn’t need it), fast and I have never heard it running.
I have 4-5 tb of images and transferring these from a Seagate to lace drive was only showed down by the Seagate drive speeds.
I an going to buy another to stack as a back up – I think its that good!!
Had this about 3 months. It connected very easily to my IMac. I’m using Time Machine for backups which again was straightforward.
I write music, so I also use this external drive to store all my audio sounds and instruments. The software then calls these audio files in real-time which is working perfectly.
