I didn’t get a good idea of how small and light this is until I opened the package. It’s quite a bit smaller in all dimensions than a LaCie “Rugged” drive and that’s great for travel. Speed is very good even through a hub. Very impressed.
This LaCiE drive is very light and has fast transfer speeds! It is easily portable and when I say it’s light, it’s very light and as light as a pair of AirPods. The only downside for my personally with this product is loading files. I’m not sure if it’s a problem specifically from me, but it has been very slow when loading files in. Other then that, it is a very clean product that works perfectly! It is well worth the money!
Got this drive to use as a Time Machine backup on my Mac desktop. It connected to my Mac without difficulty (yes, plug and play) and seems to be working fine. Lots of Time Machine backup files out there now. Not much more to say- it’s working fine, and no complaints.
No spinning hard disk (duh, you knew that), and has functioned perfectly. Power draw from a laptop is less than an HDD, but you still do need a tricky adapter for an iPhone or iPad that allows charging of the device while this SSD is connected.
The product is reliable. I have found Thunderbolt and USB-C drives that are much cheaper but have problems with disconnects. Sometimes it is when the drive gets hot but I have seen it with idle drives too. The LaCie Rugged drives are plugged in 24/7 and when under heavy use it stays working. I know that sustained high usage that performance can go down but that is an issue with all solid state drives. I still will buy the cheaper drives when I need a temporary storage drive but for data that matters, I will only use this LaCie Rugged drive. Waiting for a price drop for my next purchase but I feel like it will never happen.
This drive is very tiny. It kind of feels a little lightweight from the previous external SSDs I have owned, so I don’t know how the drive will perform over the years. Additionally due it’s lightweight construction I might be a little concerned about heat displacement if I had the drive connected continually to my laptop. I use it for back up only and then store it away, so the drive is not running all the time where heat would become an issue. For my purposes it works great.
Bought to import nearly 200GB 4K video into for FCPRO X edit. Comes with USB C cable. Upgraded to Anker Thunderbolt 3 cable. Judging by the speed so far I reckon it’s going to take about an hour to import the lot. Massive improvement on my existing portable hard drives.
Wasn’t even sure there was anything in the Amazon bubble wrap, but there it was.
Fantastic unit.
Use it for backing up recordings and software.
I had LaCie drives before so I was confident with my purchase.
10 gigs transferred in like 15 seconds.
Fastest driver I’ve ever owned.
Don’t look anywhere else.
Just buy this and worry not.
Nowhere on a description it says that this external diver was used before, but I received a used version for whatever reason. I love this brand, but will not use a previously used drives.
My iMac (2017) became so slow that it was borderline unusable. It has a 1TB HDD internal drive. I bought this 500GB external SSD to ‘replace’ the internal drive so that my startup disk is now the SSD. Works like magic. Everything’s so fast now. Over the moon. If you want to do the same, you can find the instructions on Apple.com. Easy to follow.
10/10
SSD is good. Hopefully will last. Works with iPad as well.
Have been using Lacie (HDD/SSD) for quite long. time. For this particular SSD, I bought 2 old models and one new model.
Two critical points for the new model:
Why do we need an oblique/tilted side wall? Why….?? Dumb idea.
The oblique side wall makes the connection difficult for any USB-C cord.
The supplied USB-C to USB-C cord is even poorer. It’s base is wider than many other cords, making it even harder to reach the port on that oblique wall. And very difficult to connect to iPad.
I use a different cord with the new model.
The old (square black) version is much better.
I use this for my MacBook Air with Time Machine, it works very well, it is small so easy to take with me.
Highly recommended
Tech Support – I didn’t need any. There are plenty of good youtube videos if you need assistance.
Value for the Money – I didn’t want to pay $245.00 for a Hard Drive. I had $100.00 in mind, but this was the best deal I could find for a solid-state LaCie 2T. I used to say I’m not a packrat, but now I can go for it. It’s like buying an insurance policy for a fixed price for as long as the Hard Drive works; it’s liberating.
Durability – I have no idea, and time will tell. I read that a solid-state drive was more durable than HDD, so that became the only option I would consider to back up all my creativity. I also use 50 gigs of iCloud storage for .99 cents per month. Finally, I feel like I’m doing it right!
I’ve only had the LaCie Hard Drive for a week. I like that Apple highly rates this brand for my MacBook Pro. I also like that LaCie built it to be beautiful with my Mac because, you know, I keep it plugged in, and it tags along everywhere we go like a tail. Yeah, I wouldn’t say I like that part, and I am sure that won’t last forever. 🙂
Shipping: As expected, I received it in about a week.
Expensive, but well worth the money. Easy to setup and use, small and light.
The size and weight are perfect for complete mobile backup of files and those who travel with their laptops. Transfer is extremely fast and works flawlessly with my MacBook Air.
Best part it takes up virtually zero space in my laptop bag when travelling and I no longer have to worry about dropping my external hard drive and losing data I require when back home.
Purchasing a second for my spouse.
Was cautious buying this because of some bad reviews. Whilst it’s early days, the initial set up on M1 Mac studio was easy and the transfer was fast and painless. Bought a decent thunderbolt cable for it and currently pleased with its performance
The drive is very neat and works well. I did have an issue with the Mac OS reporting that I had not ejected the drive properly before disconnecting it, even though it was permanently connected. I contacted Seagate LaCie and got a couple of prompt responses from them with ideas to try. Those did not solve the problem but then it solved itself at the same time as an OS update. I reported that back to Seagate who thanked me for letting them know.
While they were unable to solve the problem, which was probably nothing to do with the drive anyway, they were certainly attentive, polite, and they did read what I wrote each time. Full marks to their support arrangements.
When you’ve shot a TB of data in a day and want to get home then this drive is brilliant. Transfers 100GB in about 5 minutes. Has been reliable and works with Mac encryption.
You can copy onto the drive very, very quickly. It’s great.

This is a Very good usb and I’m very happy with the how it’s performing !
Plugged in to my Apple Mac and worked straight away. No problems. Very, very light amd small. Very happy.
This is an excellent drive – I’d been looking for an SSD for the Blackmagic 6k – a camera that needs a consistently fast drive to record 6k raw footage. Had made the mistake of buying some other drives that were cheaper but not recommended by Blackmagic – a number of dropped frames later I finally got this LACIE drive. Finally able to use the camera without issue.
On the surface, it’s a great little fast drive. Well designed, looks great. Firstly, the USB C cord that comes with it is waaaaaay too short. Like many other people, I have my MacBook Pro on a laptop stand, not flat on my desk and the cord doesn’t reach. I have to buy yet another longer cord. An extra 5-10 cm would have done the job. This part is a silly design. What, is LaCie trying to save a few pennies with the midget cord? :)) Secondly, when tested, the drive has 800 MB/s write and 865 MB/s read speed on my 16″ Macbook Pro ( which is fairly new and fast) connected directly with the USB-C cord. NOT, the “up to 1,000 MB/s” speed claimed. Other than that, it’s great.
Solidly built – and very small compared with a disc drive. It works very efficiently with Time Machine. It is the third LaCie product I have bought. They are good quality products, easy to install and use.
Tiny and very fast – could sit on a credit card and hardly “spill over” the sides.
A good price for 2TB. Very portable and works . Very short cable supplied, I don’t think it needs to be, I’ve run longer USB-C cable without any loss in performance.
USB c small compact size. Used as off line storage for MacBook.
Very compact and fast LaCie Rugged SSD Pro Thunderbolt 2TB drive. Initial back up was slower than expected (with Carbon Copy Cloner), but very fast thereafter.
A great little hard drive, small with very quick read and write speeds, I’m getting around 940mbs on read and write, a little expensive but it does work, I suppose you do get what you pay for sometimes, very pleased
It’s small and rugged. Best bit of kit I have bought for a long while.
Too expensive. It’s the best I ever owned: fastest, smallest, rugged – definitely durable – wouldn’t allow to drop it though not even for testing.. – recovery promise is also encouraging – hope to never need one. Would definitely buy again, in fact I am keep looking at the prices when will drop again, as definitely will buy one or even two more – maybe bigger than 1 TB.
Unused Thunderbolt ports on my old Mac – I wanted to get an external SSD to use them.
Old Mac so only Thunderbolt 1 (no power for device, so bought an external powered Dock.
Also bought a Thunderbolt 1 to 3 adapter and a Thunderbolt1 cable.
Now all works fine.
It should work straight into Thunderbolt 3 on newer Apple devices.
About 1 cm wider and 50 cms heavier than my 2TB GDrive mobile SSDs, which are USB 3, but HUGELY faster.
Note that the LaCie Rugged SSD will ONLY connect using a USB-C port; a USB-A port does not provide sufficient power.
Massive storage on such a small device and it looks so cool
I needed a new temporary storage solution, where I could edit photos and particularly videos, without a hard drive with a spinning disk holding up my workflow so I researched a number of SSDs but the one I chose in the end was the LaCiE Rugged SSD Pro.
Apparently, although it’s not the fastest on the market, it has a longer-term ability to read and write than many if not all of its direct competitors. The LaCie is also rugged enough to chuck in a bag and go and it’s also supposed to be reasonably water resistant. Who could ask for more? I would have given five stars but the price was almost unjustifiable for me. Well done LaCie.
