I’m sure the weight of the product is listed but compared to normal straighteners these are very heavy so anyone who struggles with using their hands are going to find these difficult to use
I’m mixed race and have quite curly Afro hair. I was worrying about hair damage as I used to used GHD’s regularly to keep my hair straight. This was taking a toll on my hair which was becoming very dry and brittle. I decided to try L’Oral’s steam straightener and I’m so glad I did. When using this my hair felt instantly smoother and healthier and lasted for longer despite humid conditions and didn’t revert. I believe that because the steam straightener leaves your hair with moisture even whilst providing a straight hair style. The proof was when washing my hair my curls bounced back without any trouble- showing less damage. Absolutely love this product and is very much worth the money. I’m so glad I purchased this item!
Really good! Fast and easy to use. Took 5 minutes to straighten my hair, and it’s quite long! Really smooth and healthy look, love it!
So I have GHD platinum plus straightener as well, but that’s a completely different thing. The loreal the steam straightener is just AMAZING! My hair looks so healthy and shiny! I absolutely love it! Of course GHD it’s lighter, smaller and handy… But Loreal doesn’t burn my hair which is extremely important to me. I’m glad I bought it!
Absolutely amazing results.I have very thick curly hair and in one pass it’s straight and silkyand it feels hydrated. Never got these results with ghds. Would highly recommend.
I upgraded from the steampod 3 as my daughter kept stealing it from me and have to say this version is better. Steam seems to flow more consistently and it’s lighter and easier to use.
This steam Straightener us a masterpiece.
Well built, sturdy and nice to hold.
Very easy to setup. Nice and soft hair after.
Controlls are quick and easy to understand.
Leaves hair feeling soft, styled and moisturised.
Very nice design and great construction.
Overall I can definitely recomend.
his thing has some weight to it, if you have very long hair your arm will get very tired.
needs de-mineralised water which while i understand to stop the thing developing limescale is still an inconvenience.
results, Yes significantly better results than my usual cheap straighteners. enough to justify the price for me!? probably not.
for someone with longer hair that takes more to straighten then yeah maybe.
if you use curlers often then i would recommend a dedicated one over this, it does work but very much as an after thought to possibly justify the price and if you only need your hair curled for rare occasions then its probably good enough at it than you shouldn’t need anything else but its not as good a curler as it is a straightene
I had no idea I’d need to use demineralised water, I ordered 5litres off Amazon. Make sure you have some when you buy this. It was easy to pure in with the bottle provided. You also get a wrap cover, 3 different brush attachments, as well as covers for the curling part so you don’t burn yourself. At first I thought the noise was strange and thought it was broken. I looked it up and that was normal. My hair was no longer frizzy, it was also a lot more soft and shiny. Such a healthier way to straighten and curl your hair. My only down side is the wrap case, it’s not the best and not very protective. Need a better case for them.
Honestly I don’t know if I can express with words how perfect this straightener is in many ways, it manages to do exactly what it promises, whether it’s straightening your hair with as little damage as possible or making really nice curly looks. It is an excellent choice for those who like to have straight hair sometimes without damaging the curls. Very perfect!
I’ve used GHDs all my adult life. My hair is destroyed with heat & colouring. I tried these & they’re brilliant. My hair is so straight & shiny. I can’t remember the last time I was pleased with how my hair looked. Highly recommend.
This hair straightener is the best I’ve ever used. It has a ceramic plate, which heats up quickly and gives long-lasting results. The steam function is a nice addition; filling the water can be a pain, but the results are fantastic; hair becomes soft and shiny after use.
I’ve been using this product for a while now and am pleased with it. It’s come in a nice box, making it very much giftable; the built quality is top-class and has stood up to the test of time.
The only downside is that it’s heavy—so if you have weak wrists or hands, this might not be the best option. However, if you can deal with that minor inconvenience, this product is definitely worth the money!
I hope this review helps you to make a purchasing decision.
I have thick, frizz prone hair that has a strong kink in it. I rarely bothered to use straighteners on my hair as it would take a long time & the finished results didn’t last for long.
One thing that makes a difference to the results is that these straighteners have ceramic plates, which I’ve found give me longer lasting results AND reduce any frizziness metal plates gave me. I have gotten good, long lasting results (I tied my hair up & when I combed it back out the next day my hair was still super straight and smooth.
If you have thinner hair you don’t need to make do with a few pre-selected heat settings and fry your hair. The straighteners have a temperature dial and adjustable plates, making it easy to pick the right temperature for your hair. The steam feature makes the process kinder to the hair.
I’ve removed a star as I prefer straighteners with wider plates, as I find the straightening process a bit quick faster with wider plates. I’ve had a play around for the past few weeks and the thinner plates do make it easy to curl and wave my hair, but I’m just mainly interested in straightening out the kinks.
My first impression was that for an expensive product it could have been better presented. it arrived in a plain brown card box snd inside was a printed but thin and poor quality box with the straightener snd ancillaries pushed inside. Maybe because it is “professional” it does not need the same retail appeal. Once inside the box though so this has been fought over by my wife, daughter and granddaughter. They all love it and their experience is that it does a really good job.
Easy to use and the brushes and steam lift it above the items they have been using. About the only negative comment was that the cable could have been a little longer. but then it would need a bigger box.
These are some really nice professional straighteners that will give you a sleek straight look, and can curl the hair as well. I liked them a lot, however as others have said they are quite heavy. My hair is thick and curly, but I still managed to get very straight hair which kept this way for longer than my old GHD straighteners.
I do feel like it is damaging the hair slightly less, when combined with a heat spray I think this works really well.
It’s been about a month of using these, and I’m starting to see the difference to the quality of my hair. My old straightens were great, but the temperature control was bad, and they left my hair with split ends, looking a bit friend. Since I’ve started using the steam pods my hair has a lot more shine, and I get the same results at lower temperatures so have much less damange and breakage to the ends of my hair (which is thin, fine and prone to breaking).
The little perks with these soon add up – like the slide in comb when straightening, the heated ends to make curling easier, and the heat proof mat included in the box. They’re also pretty lightweight to hold compared to my old ones.
The only draw backs ar that it can be quite fiddling to add the water, and remembering t buy deionised water is a nightmare.
At this price I’d also like a loop on the cable to hang them from, and a clip to keep the paddles closed when they are not switched on.
All in all though, a very very good pair of hair straighteners.
This is my first, I have type 4 hair, after watching many many reviews. This has blown me away my hair is soft, they have listened and solved one complaint about the product which is, it doesn’t get close enough to the root, no problem there! I only need one pass and I can do larger sections! Can’t speak for how my hair is going to revert back after first wash but this has done a great job at getting my hair super straight and I initially started on 210 but moved to 200 which is amazing… I may even try 180 on my next go but highly recommend especially if you’re looking for a healthier way to use heat… 95% less damage, my hair is shiny, smooth and I am very happy! Steampod 4 definitely worth it for the type 4 girls. Plus the comb has always been genius to add to the tool but now you have a few other options.
L’Oral Professional Steamhub 4.0: I’d been keen to try a steam straightener since I first heard about them so was delighted to give this very regal looking tool a go. I’ve got thick hair with a kink and it’s a bit coarse but it always looks so much better when we’ll straightened. Here’s what I thought:
What’s good:
* Very quality build and beautifully boxed (would make a lovely pressie)
* Broad plates that capture hair easily and slide smoothly
* No need to go back over strands, straightens well first time
* The steam effect really does make for a smoother and shinier look
* Heats up quickly with very responsive temp control
Not so good:
* It requires demineralised water – had to buy some but will last well.
* it’s quite heavy if you have a lot of hair but fairly speedy as only need to do each strand once
* It’s very pricey at just short of 300
I like what this does to my hair it feels sleek without too much effort and the steam seems to inject some moisture into each strand, it really does make a difference to the outcome but definitely guide away from the face as it’s hot! It’s a lot of money and I think you have to be a very serious “straightener” to get your monies worth but it is a fine piece of kit.
First off, WOW. These are absolutely amazing! Not for the faint hearted. This is a beast and probably double the weight of an average set of hair straightens. Something you would expect to see in a professional studio. My girlfriend absolutely loves them however. They heat up very quickly and she was able to do her whole hair in under 10 minuets!
Its very well built and easy to use. Instructions provide everything necessary to get you started. Well worth it. Defiantly a premium product but hands down the best straightens out there
Safe to say I’m now an ex-ghd user – these are great, really simple to use I like the wide plates too. I was concerned that I might burn myself on the outer areas that heat up for curling (which I’ve not tried yet as curls don’t really stay in) but fortunately they have covers – superb for clumsy people like moi!
I like the little water bottle as it make them easy to fill up, I have used de-mineralised water in them rather than tap as it says it will cause them to malfunction.
They are quite weighty (I wouldn’t say heavy), feel really well built, and built to last!
The most awkward thing I found when using them is that you have direction arrows which show where to place your hair and which way to straighten which I’m not used to with the old GHDs but once I get used to it I guess it will get easier and more natural.
I would definitely recommend making the switch from the brand I’ve already mentioned!
This is a very premium hair straightener from L’Oral, which is what it should be, considering the price point. However though the price is on the high side, you are effectively getting two products in one – a hair straightener and a curler, you could even argue three–in-one…
It’s quite a chunky thing but has a good length of cable as well as a rotating cable end meaning maneuverability is good.
There is a little detachable reservoir for the water and a bottle is provided to help with filling. Talking about water, this is my only annoyance, but one that is understandable. You have to use distilled or demineralised water. This is obviously not something that comes out of the tap here in the UK so you will have to purchase it separately. Though annoying, the benefit is that you won’t suffer any limescale issues building up over time.
The unit has a good range of heat settings but is also supplied with three different comb sizes. These combs slot onto one of the heads so that you comb as you straighten or curl. It’s a clever way of again doing two things at the same time.
Curling is achieved by removing the white heat shielding from the heads and then twisting your hair as you would expect. The steam helps with some great curling and effortless straightening.
If you are serious about styling your hair then this is definitely worth considering as the results are great and the ability to straighten, curl and comb make for a multi-purpose unit.
I have hair that’s almost to my shoulder so it wasn’t long enough to test the curling function well, the clip on covers to cover the metal curling plates don’t feel like they will stay on but they do.
The straightening function was superb, it takes some getting used to as you can only straighten in one direction (wasn’t very clear on the instructions) and they are quite heavy.
But I only needed to go over my hair once and it stayed poker straight for days and I didn’t feel like it was frying it and it didn’t look dry. I have very bleached hair so I had it on its lowest setting and I barely used any of the water.
The case for it is excellent with a space for the styler, its cord, the spare combs and the water bottle to fill it up.
For the price I thought that these were going to be brilliant, but they are very heavy if you have a lot of hair to straighten. I found my arm aching very quickly. The comb is a good idea and the steam function helps to smooth the hair very well. I have wiry coarse hair and the straighteners did not really do any better job on mine than my normal ones. I also thought that the lead was a tad too short to get to my main mirror as I can with my hairdryer which was a tad frustrating. To allow the steam function to work you have to take off the reservoir from the handle, remove the rubber cover and their is a small hole for adding water. It seems to be very well made and for people with the right type of hair I have no doubt it would be great if you do not mind the weight of it.
Loreal SteamPod 4
The review is on the latest SteamPod 4 offering from Loreal. I have not used earlier versions of SteamPods, so it is not an update but a first-hand experience.
Opening the box revealed a purposeful-looking device finished in meticulous plastic and stainless steel with a removable water reservoir; the quality is evident from the get-go. The weight is approximately double that of an average hairdryer, including the full reservoir. It is a hair straightener, curler and creates waves all in one, so it is versatile.
It is important to note that covers are provided to shield the stainless-steel parts when straightening and removed for the curling function; this will avoid injury.
Experiments were carried out on black hair length of 45cm. The SteamPod heated up very quickly with a slight hissing noise. Wow, I was impressed with the first pass results; it only required that to straighten my hair, no need for repetitive tries. Overall, it took 11 minutes in total to complete my head. The fine comb and ceramic plates glided effortlessly through my hair. I believe this is the benefit of the steam function; it is less damaging than other straighteners I have used as it applies less trauma to the hair.
The second experiment was to curl my hair about 25cm from the base. I left the SteamPod to cool before removing the plastic covers. Again, one attempt was enough to create curls effortlessly using the same comb. By the way, there are three combs provided, and each fits into the groove, so the comb, ceramic plates and steam come into contact with your hair. Note that the curl function uses more water.
Other accessories include a heatproof pouch, three combs and an empty feeder bottle to fill the reservoir.
Overall, I like this product; it is pricey, but when you consider what it does and how quickly and less harmful effects on your hair, it is worth it. The versatility of the all-in-one appeals to me. I would recommend the SteamPod 4.
My wife was keen to try this L’Oreal steam Straightener .
The instruction booklet isn’t the greatest , there are numerous cartoon style pictures but the wording is in the tiniest printing and difficult to read.
However once you locate a few key pieces its relatively simple to operate.
First had to find some de-mineralised water as per the instructions. Ended up ordering it from Amazon , local chemist didn’t stock it .
You use the included small nozzled bottle to fill the reservoir of the straightener. The reservoir soft rubber cap feels a bit flimsy and hope it will last .
Then you have to hunt for the on/off switch. Actually it’s an elongated rubber switch on one of the inner surfaces of the tongs . Unfortunately it’s the same colour as the background metal and difficult to spot . A contrasting colour would have been helpful or a small illumination on it . The other end of the the switch mechanism selects one of the three heats . My wifes hair being fairly fine , she selected 180.
It quickly heated up and drawing the tongs through her hair it was soon straightened .
She was really pleased with the results .
To me , a mere man , it seems expensive but I’m assured these quality appliances fetch a premium price .
Wow! Well this method of straightening or curling hair using dry steam is very new to me, but I must say I am impressed by the results and ease of use for straightening hair. The steam pod 4 fundamentally looks like a hair straightener, though it’s bigger and a little heavier. It has floating ceramic plates like a traditional hair straightener but it also has 7 little little holes running along one side next to the small slide in comb. On the outside is a water tank that is easy to fill by the included small plastic bottle, but only ever use demineralised water as anything else will clog up the very fine steam system and stop it working, which will also affect the guarantee, but demineralised water is available on Amazon and other shops.
It comes with 2 heat resistant white plastic covers when not curling hair with it that fits over the shiny metal outside areas to prevent finger burns when straightening hair, just slot them over. There’s 3 different inner combs too for different hair types, from thinner straight hair, wavy thicker hair and thicker coily hair. It also has 3 temperature settings of 180 degrees, 200 degrees and 220 degrees for thin, coloured or artificial hair, medium to thick and for thick curly hair. It takes about 90 seconds to heat up after switching on, it sounds like a steam iron and will go quiet and the LED temperature will stop flashing when ready. It’s important you follow the arrows on the styler when running it down your hair, it’s also important to put heat protectant spray in your hair too as you would with any heated hair appliance. Section hair to straighten then run through slowly, pressing the steam pod 4 together as you go. I have thick, frizzy long naturally grey hair that naturally kinks into waves, the front of my hair was also curled when I started on my dry hair. Well my hair went straight, on the first pass too. Impressive. It was quick and the water tank was only down 25%. I showed my husband who said my hair looked the straightest he’d ever seen it and it looked longer too. My hair felt soft and it looked shiny under the lights. I was a happy bunny. The next day my hair still looked straight and we went for an hours walk in the country park, it was a warm day sunny day. When I got home I noticed my hair at the back had started to look wavy again it wasn’t a humid day, this is in November and dry. So my hair had changed back at the worst part of my hair at the back sadly. I think perhaps it might be down to me not putting enough setting spray on my hair, but I know my hair is stubbornly wavy, so next time I’ll have to turn up the heat to 220 degrees (I had it on 200 degrees) and see if that does it. I think it’s always a little trial and error with new things. I did find trying to curl my hair difficult, I watched the videos from L’Oral’s website for the steam pod 4, I will have to practice more, though I am used to my Dyson air wrap that curls much easier but doesn’t straighten. I think with practice I’d get the hang of it. I really like the idea of using dry steam for smooth hair that’s also much safer to use on hair than regular straighteners. The steam pod 4 comes with a heat resistant black travel pouch that folds open to hold the steam pod plus accessories, but I feel, for the money, a nice travel case would have been a much nicer option. It’s a great design idea that is kinder to hair with good results that are quick too, all in all, I’d recommend it from using regular hair straighteners. Please see my photos, I hope my honest review is helpful to you, thank you for reading it.
This is the L’Oreal steam pod 4.0 which is a 3-in-1 straightener, wave-maker & curling rings all in one. I couldn’t believe what a difference the steam makes – these plates literally glide through the hair, removing frizz and leaving the hair straight and shiny. I’ve never had anything even close to being as good as this for straightening (and I’ve always had the top spec GHDs so that’s pretty impressive).
My daughter used these for curling and she was delighted with the result. The curls were beautiful and they lasted.
For waves it’s equally impressive. Lovely soft beachy waves.
Can’t recommend this highly enough. It’s fantastic.
I cannot believe the difference these make to my hair. My hair is usually so hard to straighten, it is what my partner would describe as wild. I have long thick hair that I have dyed for years, and it isn’t in top condition. It tends to look dry and wiry if over straightened with regular straighteners yet won’t straighten in low heat or quickly. These straighteners are a whole different class, the steam is a game changer. I washed my hair as normal this morning, I did nothing different. After drying (remembering to use my heat protective spray) I had to pop out with my dog a quick walk. When I got back in my hair was definitely wild, brushing did very little to tame it. I used these for the first time and my hair looked better than it had in years.
The straighteners are easy to use, you fill with the demineralised water that is included before switching on. I like that here are 3 comb sizes included, I chose to use the middle one and set the temperature at 210 degrees. Pretty much as soon as you switch on you can hear it heating up and the steam forming, it heats up quickly. I used to first totally straighten my hair and then to curl the sides away from my face. It works very quickly without the need to keep going back over.
The results were amazing, I had expected it to be straightened well but I didn’t expect how soft and in good condition my hair felt, it didn’t feel dried out it felt really healthy. My hair hadn’t looked and felt that good in years since it was styed at an upmarket saloon for a special event. I really am impressed that I can achieve those results at home. I love everything about these straighteners. They are well made and I would expect them to last well for years to come.
These straighteners are pretty meaty and I think they are definitely more suited to a professional hairdresser than for home use. They’re very heavy and very large compared to the everyday straighteners I normally use and I found them quite cumbersome.
The steam element is a fabulous addition for me, the choice of 3 temperatures is perfect, I like the choice of combs, the travel pouch is great, I just wish it wasn’t so heavy.
I’m not giving up though as they are amazing and they straighten my frizzy hair perfectly, hopefully I’ll get used to the size and weight.
I’ve been a GHD girl for 15 years and nothing has ever come close to being able to fully tame my frizz until now. This L’Oral Steampod 4.0 not only tames my frizz just as well (or dare I say even better) it’s also a lot less damaging for my hair! I’m totally blown away by how good it is!
Do what do you get for your money? In the box there’s the straighteners themselves, a fabric heatproof styling wrap, a empty plastic water bottle, two safety clips to go over the heated curling area and three different combs that attach to the straighteners.
Everything is pretty straightforward to use, but I was a little confused by the instructions telling me I needed to use demineralised water. I only have a filter jug at home and so went for that but I will need to look into buying special water for them as I’ve read online filtered water still has some minerals in it.
The water is easy enough to put in using the provided plastic bottle. The small water tank pops off and you squeeze the water in the hole.
The straighteners look amazing. The design is sleek and they feel lovely to hold. They’re a tad larger than I’m used to but I didn’t have any issues using them due to that at all.
The on button is located inside the straighteners along with the temperature button. The straighteners can be used at three different heats, 180 degrees, 200 degrees and 210 degrees, and you just press the temperature button until it shows the one you want. I used them at 210 degrees as I have pretty thick hair that normally requires a higher heat.
One of the really good things about these is the built in comb. It makes sure each section of hair is combed into palace as your straighten all the way down to the ends. It also slides in and out so you can change them around depending on your hair thickness.
Now my biggest concern with these was the exposed heated plates on the top and bottom of the straighteners (the parts for curling) as I was worried I would end up burning my hands or face on them when I was just straight if my hair. Thankfully that’s not an issue at all as heatproof clips are provided to cover these parts! They’ve really thought of everything with these.
I first tested them on blow dried hair. I did half straight and half curly just to see how it worked. And the straightening worked like a dream. I still have to use small sections and it takes the same amount of time as my previous straighteners, but it instantly gets rid of the frizz and I found it made my hair extra shiny and soft as well!
The curling I had a little more issues with, but mainly just because of the technique and I’ll need to do some YouTube research to figure it out. I still managed to add some curls thought that then dropped out to be lovely waves.
I do have two tiny niggles with it. Firstly you need to keep refilling it with the demineralised water and though it states you can style 192m of hair with one tank full I found that I used 3/4 of the water the first time I used it. Hopefully with time I’ll get used to it and better with them so will use less, but it’s still a little annoying to keep topping them up.
Secondly I really dislike the case it comes with. It’s a heat proof wrap but I find I can’t fit it all in easily and I worry I’ll damage it but squeezing it in. It’s also soft and offers no real protection. For the price I’d have hoped for something a little more robust and larger.
Overall though I’m 100% sold on the Steampod! It’s straighteners my hair better than GHD’s, something I never thought I’d hear myself say, and leaves my hair feeling amazing. I honestly can’t recommend these enough, but make sure you are able to get demineralised water and perhaps a better case.
