I used this product to connect to my lawn mower so as to mow the lawn. It is well designed and easy to wind and unwind. it can also be useful round the house. I would not use it on wet ground, simply because it is electric, and I am not sure how weatherproof it is.
Great extension lead and a good price. Very well made was delivered quickly
I have used masterplug items for years, I look for the name as I feel confident it’s going to be a quality item.
Just wish it was a different colour.
Can’t fault it, has been really useful for work in the garden.
Seems good quality for the price. Haven’t used it in anger yet, but it does seem well enough made to last several years.
The length of the extension is just what I needed. The only quibble I have is that the main body keeps toppling over face down. Not very good especially in wet grass.
Seems well made and winds in and out nicely. Get the impression it will last well. Looks good and the inclusion of the on/off switch is a nice feature.
Top extension lead had for a while now no problem
No issues, works well and allowed us to power wash a barn near the house
This is a well made masterplug that can stand quite a lot of being dropped, left out in the rain and generally worked hard!
My gripes are the same as others have noted – it doesn’t automatically wind in and it does have a tendency to get tangled if you roll it out too fast.
It’s eye catching colour means you should be able to spot it in the depths of your garage or shed!
The ‘full price’ is quite reasonable but it’s current discount (almost 50%) makes it an obvious buy!
I use this power cord daily for all my workout in the garden, it’s been dropped multiple times. Rained on and generally abused over the last 3 months and still seems to be working in perfect condition. Only reason I wouldn’t give it five stars is that it can get tangled very easily if you pull the cord in quickly
good product .. great idea … only negative ( and this is knitpicking really) is that the cable to the socket doesnt wind and needs to be placed on the spindle by hand.
Needed a new extension and liked the safety aspect of the hi-vis cabling. Switch on the main unit so you can control the feed to the tools and don’t have to go right back to the plug. Quite stable as well when its on its side. Overall very happy and great price point for a quality product.
Purchased to replace my old master plug extension reel that left for pastures new after 8 years! Went back to the trusted brand, nice new colour design, but in essence the same as my old one. Purchased alongside was a holding clamp. This allows me to fix and secure it to the wall in my shed/workshop. Really don’t know how I used it without one before. Great price, cheapest I could find.
Good extension reel. Hard wearing and cost effective. Only downside it is a pain to roll up unless you apply tension.
Would buy again due to cost and hard wearing but be prepared to get annoyed rolling it up as it does your head i
I wanted a lead from a known brand so I’d have confidence it’s safe. This Masterplug Reel fitted the bill and it looks reasonably made plus has switching and thermal cutout etc. I gave this to my sister who isn’t a DIY natural and she has had a lot of difficulty in winding the reel in and out plus she feels it gets stuck – there’s a bit of a knack to operating the reel which suggests it isn’t for everyone.
25 metres long, so will be long enough for most gardens, it has a 5 year warranty, which is only reel I’ve seen have this.
There is a thermal cutout switch, on/off button, power button and the plug holes automatically cover when plug removed, these are great safety features and what made my choice when purchasing an extension reel. It also has a bright lime green cable, so easy to not mow over.
The reel itself is sturdy, strong and has a stand and easy wind up handle. I’m really pleased with it and think its great value for money.
Great build quality, very rugged. Good for outdoors but is not suited for anywhere it will get wet. Compact size as the handle doesn’t protrude that much. Has great safety features and with the cable being bright I have found myself noticing it more than my last one meaning I’m less likely to damage it.
The reel is smooth and easy to tug one handed to extend and the handle is just as easy to retract it. I like it has a knob on the handle that freely rotates to grab onto.
I manage to trip it after a long time power washing followed by running a bouncy castle off it, the thermal cut off definitely functions as a great safety feature.
Overall very happy I spent the extra getting this over the previous ones I bought. It looks good, works great, is easy to unreel and reel back up, stores well and has additional safety features I didn’t think I needed.
Great cable real. If you don’t need the length get the shorter one as it is heavy. But that’s what you get for having 50m of cable on a real. Ideal for reaching my whole garden. I like the cable guide too. Handle feels a little awkward to start with as im used to the hand being central. Feels good quality. I like the addition of a small clip so the plug can be copied on the side to keep it tide when stored. Cable is nice and thick. Easily seen due to the colour.
This Masterplug 40mtr extension lead is an EXCELLENT product. The cable doesn’t tangle as one review states nor is it dangerous if used as stated on the reel housing.
It is sturdy and robust, it has excellent cable which is 13 amp rated and easy to see. It unwinds easily and winds back easily. You plug it into a socket, walk to where you need power, put it down onto the floor which should be level, you plug your 240 volt tool into it and you use the tool as it should be used. On the reel housing it states the load specification for if the reel is unwound or wound and you do not exceed that recommendation.
IT IS AS EASY AS THAT AND SAFE. Great product, worth every penny.
Saw this item on Wickes website which was slightly cheaper, the postage took it over the price so visited the store and was told it was only an online item only.
Decided to buy from Amazon instead
The LED light is so bright especially at night, as many of the surge protected extension cables are not long enough we needed 14 foot so I could put it around the door frame and along the ceiling with the network cables, it has 4 sockets so plenty of space. We only use two. As an extension cable it does the job, it looks and feels robust. We switch off at the end of a working day, in case you forget you can’t miss the LED ligh
The main reason why I bought this type of cable reel, was to put the single waterproof socket end into the confined space of a vehicle’s engine bay. I can then connect a battery charger and close bonnet (hood) on both items. Thus being able to protect the items from the elements and theft. The innovative design allows this, but like all reels is awkward when it comes to reeling in the cable, though the guide is useful. This is made slightly more awkward by the short cable that connects the reel to the mains, this must be tightly wrapped and fixed to the outside of the main reel, before rewinding the extension cable. This quiet often falls off and needs to be re-fixed before continuing winding in (or out). A suggestion for the manufacturer would be to make this short cable section detachable, with a connector at one end that would only plug into the side of the reel and a wall plug at the other end. This short cable could then be unplugged from the reel and the wall plug end could be fitted to the waterproof reel socket, so as to extend the length of cable. It. would then be possible to reel the whole lot in and onto the drum. Would I buy it again? probably yes.
Good colour cable to trail around the garden, 25 metres bought was adequate, reel seems substantial too, . If the main lead is unwound first, then the smaller lead from the reel to the power connection (a little tricky as they both wind the same way) then that’s the best way to unwind it all. At 3 metres, I found it ample to reach from the reel on the garden path to inside the house/socket. The encasement of plug on the end of the extension is a good idea, but my only quibble is the casing ‘clip’ closing the plug housing is a bit flimsy, time will tell if it will stand the rigors of being dragged around the garden as this clip holding the housing together springs undone. Mine did, firstly in the grass, then over the path. I can’t see it lasting long, manufacturer – please come up with a more substantial way to hold the plug encasement together.
It’s not easy to wind the cable back up on the reel, a bigger winding handle would help. But – overall, very pleased with the purchase, does the job.
Somebody gave this product a bad review here but really that wasn’t warranted. This is a good product if you know how to use it and it’s different from normal extension reels. First, place the reel near the socket you want to plug into. Then, run out the long cable to where you need to work. Finally, plug in the short cable into the socket. You can’t do it in any other order or you’ll end up in a tangle – just like you would if you plugged an appliance into a conventional extension reel and then unwound it. This is one long piece of cable, split at the reel into a long length with a waterproof socket, and a short length with a plug on it. It’s a single reel in two parts – not two reels that are independent of each other. I’m very happy with it. My only small criticism is that the plug seems to be made of cheap plastic – but that can always be cut off and changed for very little money.
My wife bought this to be honest, as I work overseas and she wanted a cable reel to reach someway down my garden to plug in a WiFi camera to watch some of the animal garden visitors. Covid has turned my wife into a bit of a fan of watching the local wildlife. I suspect she isn’t the only one.
Bit of a line 5 here, but pre-covid we didn’t really notice much of what went on around our garden and the local woods. Because we – or rather my wife – has had more time, we’ve noticed far more around us than we realised. Covid is grim but there are small benefits.
Anyway, as I was away when my wife wanted this she sent me the link to make sure it wasn’t a dodgy cheapo one that would go up in flames. As the brand is known and the price is relatively high for the 50m I figured it must be okay.
When I got home I then had a good look and yep, this is a well made, high quality and robust cable reel. It’s also very long at 50m – at least the one we have – and that makes it very useful.
The cable is of course bright and visible – no bad thing for sure.
It appears to be made of high grade materials and I hope should last a good long time.
The reel itself is robust and whilst a little stiff at first it seems fine now. I would add that I have also bought the wall mount which makes rolling this up easier than doing it by hand. As the wall mounts are less than 4 each I’ve three of them around my house so wherever the cable reel is used, it’s out of the way of damage.
Overall a very good bit of kit.
Overall a good sturdy product and looking forward to getting it wall mounted once I have the time. I often had issues when pressure washing my car; the extension reel may inadvertently touch the bottom of the car as I moved. This solves that issue but, it is not perfect although it may be altered in a future model perhaps.
Because the small 3 metre reel for the plug rotates along with the main reel you cannot extend/retract the main reel with it plugged in. To do so means that it ends up twisting the cable quite badly. It would be ideal to allow them to rotate separately but, it is still a good product overall. The sturdy cable guide is really useful too, a feature lacking from many other reels resulting in frustration.
Overall it is worth the money and I would recommend it especially when utilised for washing cars. It might be nice to have a dual socket option in future too.
As some of the questions and answers seemed to misunderstand this product I thought the following might help. The current product information available did make it clear enough for me, which was confirmed when I received my order.
I’d not seen these ‘reverse’ cable reels before, but when you think of it they are ideal to provide a safe weather and dust proof IP54(Google this for all the dust and water protection details) way to provide a cost effective temporary outside socket. The reel needs to stay under shelter or indoors, with its own 3m cable to connect to the supply, while the 25m trailing sealing socket lets you connect to the appliance.
… Obviously, the device being used outside needs to be suitable for outdoor use and how dusty and wet it can be.
The bright lime green cable certainly stands out so less likely for someone to trip over it and the whole product seems extremely well made and durable. The overheat resettable trip is there incase too much current is pulled when not fully unwound making the cable heat up with standard cable protection using a 13Amp fuse.
Note: Unless your home power circuit has a built in RCD ‘earth leakage trip’ I’d suggest getting one to plug this cable reel into to provide extra safety when used outside or with power tools etc.
