Shoe sizes are not standardized. Every shoe manufacturer uses different measurements in terms of instep height, toe shape and foot width. However, the basis for your own shoe size is always the length of your feet. Thus, you should always determine your foot length before buying in order to choose the right shoe.

I am in need of a new pair of waterproof walking shoes for daily hike with my dog. The brand is recommended to me by a friend who does a lot more hiking than me. These are not the cheapest but won’t really break the bank. They are so comfy and lightweight, feel like wearing a pair of trainers, most importantly the waterproof is good. I walk on mud, woodland, stones, gravel, so far my feet are well protected. I have been wearing it everyday since I have received them for about a week, no breaking in needed, wear them straight from the box. I did buy a half size up, in case I need a pair of thicker socks. So far I am very happy with the purchase and hope they last because I really love them!

I have just worn my new boots for the first time and so glad I bought them after the reviews I read they are lightweight comfy and apart from one small blister after walking 14miles I am more than happy with my purchase . Oh and most importantly the grips on the bottom saved me from slipping in some very muddy situations

The Merrell Moabs are pretty much perfect for me in terms of fit – they have a nice roomy toe-box and not too narrow in width (I woudn’t say they are super wide though). I wear a 7.5 for running and hiking shoes due to foot expansion and these are spot on. I’ve trodden in many a puddle and got caught out by the odd wave at the beach and they have kept the water out without fail. They are great! BUT, my only gripe is that the soles are really slippery when it’s wet, for example on stone paths and wooden boards. Just gutted about this as we often go up to Hadrian’s Wall and I need good grips on those big stone steps up there. So these will have to be for either dry weather or grass/forest trails only. So I’ll need to find another pair for wet weather. 🙁

I really am pleased so far with my walking boots. They are very comfort and light on my feet, not bulky. Good support on my feet. I am glad I went half a size up…enough room…wide fitting but not massively wide. Overall very good walking boot…I would recommend.

Very comfy walking boot and definitely water proof. I do a lot of walking, two long walks a day and actually went on a walking holiday after getting these and they were very comfortable from day one. I’m a size 5.5 – 6 but was informed to go up a size with Merrell walking boots and if wearing thicker walking socks. I ordered a 6.5 which without woolly socks would have been too large.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve probably worn these over 500 times in the year and a half I’ve had them. I do a daily walk and most days I wear these boots. Up until a month ago they had been spectacular. So comfortable and tough with it. They are just starting to wear down now. A little water gets in where there is a hole appearing and one of the loops has pulled off where I lace them. Previously, I would have awarded 5 stars, but I would have liked them to last at least a couple of years. I guess 500 odd wears is pretty good going. Sad to have to buy new ones.

I bought these walking boots initially for the cotswolds way that we will be walking in August. I went for comfort rather than water proofing as over the years I have had many different types makes and models of boots and they have all let in a certain amount of water. I have just been on my first walk in them it was 6 miles of bog, mud and water, my feet were completely dry when I took them off at home so have to say THEY ARE WATER PROOF despite some of the reviews I have read.

I am a size 7 foot but had to send the first ones back as slightly too small. I then ordered a 7.5 which is a perfect fit plenty of room. Delivery was prompt and on schedule. So when ordering I would suggest getting a size bigger.

The boot itself is lightweight compared to some other brand. But when on appear to be strong, sturdy and provides foot and ankles with good support and structure. Very comfortable.

These are the best walking boots I have ever had. They were incredibly comfortable from day one and really support the feet. Having had walking boots in the past that really hurt my toes I am delighted to say that these boots are an absolute treat to walk in-highly recommended.

I’ve had a few different makes of walking boots and these are the most comfortable by far. I’ve not walked them in fully yet, but even just the short walks I’ve done, they feel far more comfortable. They’re very light with really good ankle support.

The shoes are a bit on a larger scale. I am a size 3.5-4 and I ordered size 4 which has more room than other shoes. But saying that, I can wear extra thick socks in the winter with no problem. They are very comfortable and I feel a great support on my arch as well (I have a very hight arch). I had no problems breaking them in. They have a good grip on most usual surfaces (gravel, stones, sand etc) and they support ankles to a great degree. I would reccomend these highly.

I cannot find a way of contacting you direct but I’m really pleased with these boots which fit very well.
However one of the laces is too small (the other is fine) and appears to be a lace for one of the trainers (which I also have). Can you please send me another pair of laces for the walking boots?

Firm but comfy sole , plenty of toe room and goretex so dry feet!
    Look nice on too!
I am a size 6 with fairly wide feet but plenty of space .

I’ve always had leather walking boots which have been great but can take time to wear in. After years and years of hard use the inners of my last pair disintegrated beyond repair (the outers were still fine!) so needed new boots. I did loads of research on the best ones. Technology has moved on a lot so was persuaded to try non leather boots. These Merrill boots repeatedly came up as recommended. I absolutely love them. Honestly like wearing a pair of trainers. Comfy from day one. So lightweight, yet seem robust. I don’t do the mad hiking I used to do but dog walking couple of hours a day in these have been a joy. Have tackled slippy mud, pouring rain, uneven ground with ease. We’ll see how long they last but I’m a convert.

The first pair I ordered of these boots were shocking. They were very comfy but had non existent waterproofing so I returned them. A couple of months later these were half price so I thought as they had been so comfy i would order another pair and spray them with a waterproof spray. What can I say…the spray hasn’t been needed these are 100% waterproof. I’ve walked miles in them up hill and down dale across the peak district. I’ve been out in sun, rain and snow. They’ve stayed waterproof throughout and are so comfortable. They aren’t the best on ice and are very slippy. However that would be the case with most boots.

5.0 out of 5 stars This pair have been fantastic.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersHesitated for a long time before purchasing these boots, I have been walking for years in a pair of old timberland boots, that fit like a glove and were completely waterproof but were very heavy particularly if climbing.

As I was due to go on a walking trip to Dartmoor I bit the bullet and bought these.

I have not been disappointed, I am 7 days in to a 2 weeks and they fit perfectly, are so comfortable and light and have been marched through boggy moorland, streams and lots of mud and I have not had any wet feet.

I wish I had bought them sooner. Fantastic pair of boots.

I had to send my first pair of these back as the waterproofing was defective! As others have said, I just walked across long wet grass and ended up with very wet socks BUT, having had the original Merrell MOABs, I contacted the seller and they were happy to refund/exchange with no hassle as the Goretex must have been defective. I decided to give it a go with another pair and can happily report they are totally waterproof – I was even wading through deep puddles to test them out! My socks and the inside of the boot stayed totally dry
The ‘out of the box’ comfort and fit of these boots is amazing so I’m very glad I decided to give the boots a second try, it was well worth it – I love my boots!

These are super comfy boots, with excellent ankle support, just right for walking in the Welsh mountains. My last pair split on the little toe after just 8 months, but I am buying a second pair as Merrell’s are so much better than other brands, and I’m just hoping the same thing doesn’t happen again.

They are in no way waterproof. I spray them with a protector spray every few weeks, but my feet get soaked if I have to walk in the long grass.

The boot was a good fit and true to size but the arch support was far too close to the heel end. Even a brief walk around the kitchen left my arch and heel feeling a bit bruised so the boots were returned. Looks well made and sizing good in other respects.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’ve just completed a walk across North Wales, walking about 12 miles a day for 2 weeks. I wanted some lighter weight boots for the journey and these certainly fitted the bill in that respect. They have performed excellently, and with the use of some moleskin (reviewed elsewhere), kept my feet comfortable and blister free each and every day. They felt secure and gripped well in a variety of terrains.
I cannot be sure whether they are waterproof, as each day, my feet would feel damp. This may be due to the non breathability of the goretex liner though, rather than moisture penetrating from the outside. In long, wet grass, moisture certainly came in over the top of the boots which is perhaps to be expected…gaiters may help there.
Overall, I have been very pleased with them and I just hope I shall get many more miles out of them.
As always with walking boots, I bought a half size larger than my usual size to accommodate my feet swelling over the day…the sizing had been perfect for me.

Wore these straight out of the box and they are very comfortable. Lots of room in the toe box, good support for the foot and ankle. Laces have a tendency to come loose but a double knot sorts that out. Have worn them in rain and wet muddy fields and so far no leakage. Terrain here is rocky and hilly but theses boots so far are coping well. Went up half a size to enable a thick sock to be worn. Other people like the colour very much. I would have preferred the black, but delivery time was too far ahead. All down to personal choice!

I ordered these after researching shoes best suited to bunions. I am generally a size 5/5.5. I ordered 5.5 as size 6 was out of stock. Luckily, with good quality thin woolen socks, they fit really well. They give good support around the heel and ankle. They have good tread. I think the colour (grey) is perfect as goes with anything too. I wear wide barefoot trainers (size 6,) and I’m slowly replacing all my shoes, that have barefoot properties, inc a wide toe box. Although, these are not specifically barefoot, they were the best I could get at the time, and I’m extremely happy with my purchase. Highly recommended.

Have had a Merrell walking shoe for a while now and decided to try out the boot when I found other boots too solid and in-flexible. Have found that having a whole size larger than normal shoe and wearing two pairs of socks has prevented foot any problems. My previous Merrell shoes were not as waterproof as I would have liked – although it was very prolonged rain & wet conditions – and often squeaked when walking on roads HOWEVER they were the most comfortable walking shoes I have ever had and for that I will put up with most other problems. (I have a “wide-ish” foot – but don’t wear wide fitting shoes – with very active toes that like to move. Hope that helps others looking for the right fit.). Would give 5 stars if had tried them in wet conditions & owned them for longe

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese are great! I took on board the previous reviews and ordered a half size up. I’m glad I did; it leaves me with about a centimetre from my big toe to the end of the boot. I also need to wear wider fitting footwear (bunion unfortunately) and these are perfect.

These boots have been amazingly comfortable from the minute I put them on. I’ve been able to wear them out on several muddy dog walks with having to ‘wear them in’ first. They were a little tight around the back of the ankle to start with (I seem to get this with all boots that come up and over my ankle), but that only lasted a few minutes.

The tread is great; I feel safe in them (very wet and muddy ground is quite slippery!). I just rinse the bottom of them with the hose when I get home as its much easier than letting the mud dry and then getting to clean it off. Occasionally when doing this I can feel cold where the water splashes on the top of the boot, but so far my feet haven’t gotten wet.

All in all, I’m so pleased. They are bloody brilliant, really comfy and do exactly what I wanted them to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly comfortable. Order half a size up.

I am a Bunion sufferer who does a lot of Walking, bought endless walking Shoes, which all hurt my Feet.I googled walking Boots for ladies with Bunions and decided to try these.
Best thing I have ever bought,I went one half size bigger so I could wear thick socks,I’m a 6 so went for 6 half. They are so Comfortable and Snug, plenty of room to accommodate my Horrid Bunions. What I was concerned that I have a very skinny foot so thought they would be a bad fit around my ankle, but they are so snug as you can tighten them as much as you want.Sorry I’ve gone around Jerrico to explain but I absolutely Love them and walk every day about 10 KLM’s also they are Waterproof.

I have spent years looking for some nice walking boots that fit well and are not too expensive. I did not want to spend over 100 for a pair of boots. I have worn these boots twice now, hiking up hills and across fields in the rain.
I just want to say, “They do not leak!” They are GTX, water runs off them. I read the other reviews and quite a few people said that they ended up with wet socks at the end of a walk. I made sure that I tied the laces up tightly and pulled the ankles of my trousers down over the boots. They are comfortable and did not rub my heals. Highly recommend Merrell Women’s Moab boots, good value for money as well.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI absolutely love these shoes. I bought the low-rise shoes for dog walking in March and was so impressed with the comfort and fit of them that I bought these high-rise shoes for longer grass and hiking. The shoes are extremely comfortable and really well built. I can commonly get foot pain in the ridge of my foot, but the support in these soles is really good and I don’t get this wearing these shoes. I saw people had said to get a half a size big, however, i found the low-rise shoes i previously bought to run half a size big so bought 5.5 when i am usually a 6. The 5.5 in both the low and high rise fits perfectly. Even with my walking socks. Definitely recommend getting these boots. You won’t be disappointed!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI previously ordered merrel boots in a 6.5 thinking I needed some extra room but subsequently returned for my normal size 6 as the 6.5 allowed my heel to lift off the sole of the shoe, even with slightly thicker walking socks on.
These boots endured an 18.7mile/30km trek across a variety of terrain. They fit perfectly and after such a long walk I only got one minor blister on my little toe and a tiny blister on the heel, I did also have on antiblister socks. Pretty good going for the distance I think though and being the first time I had worn them. For shorter hikes I reckon my feet would have been fully intact.
Waterproof wise they were excellent, however, I did spray with a waterproofing product (kiwi) so not sure who should take credit for that but I would always recommend additional waterproofing anyway, just to be sure. We crossed three streams and multiple muddy puddles in these boots and my feet were dry at the end of the day.
Great colour, they make you look like a pro. I highly recommend these boots.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese had their first outing yesterday on quick 5 mile forest hike. They were super comfy right from the off with plenty of room in the toe box and a sung fit around the ankles and heel. I did apply nikwax before I used them to offer extra protection knowing that the tracks would be very muddy after days of rain. They were perfect, my feet stayed dry and cosy throughout, this is my second pair of Merrell hiking boots, I use my others for summer walking and they are both superb. The vibram sole meant that I had excellent grip on slippy and uneven terrain and whilst I was not walking through rivers I did ford some streams and they performed beautifully. I have very narrow ankles and heels and the padding in these sections meant that there was no rubbing. Amazing boots!!!

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersPreviously I have only bought a cheap pairs of walking boots from sports direct. Which I regretted instantly. Every time I wore them I had blisters. I had sore feet.
So after much reading of reviews I decided to buy these. Although I am an average every day person and actually would never dream of paying almost 90 quid on some shoes for myself. I decided to bite the bullet. I walk 4-5 miles daily with my dogs and wanted something to keep my feet dry and comfortable. After reading all the reviews I got half a size above my usual size 5. Also purchased some waterproof spray.
I used these the very next day they arrived and have been amazed. They are very comfortable and my feet are wider than normal. I used the waterproof spray so dont actually know if they are waterproof but my feet have been bone dry. I’ve not had a single solitary blister and have worn these almost daily since I got them. I actually doubt i will buy another make now. So its 5***** from me

Golden Review Award: 27 From Our UsersI could write all day about these boots but sometimes it is better to keep it short. I have been badgering my better half to get up in hills and outside with me for years and she has been bemoaning how she would if she had a decent pair of boots. I had had a pair of Merrells since uni a couple of decades ago and though they were still going strong they had lost their comfort and my feet had over time changed shape so I was also in the market for a replacement.

It was in that vein that I undertook my usual days of research and bought what I thought would be the best pair of Merrell ladies walking boots available outside of specialist snow, ice & crampon range ie professional or winter boots.

These boots appeared to tick all the boxes but after day 1 of her wearing them on a short 10km trial my good lady wife simply said, ” These are the best pair of boots I have ever put on my feet. I love them. I will never buy anything else ever again!”

Golden Review Award: 104 From Our Users[Update Jan 2021]

I know this review is getting a bit long to read, but it’s based on several years of use by myself and my wife of these boots and hopefully helpful for what is an important and relatively costly purchase. Thx.

Just wanted to add that whilst these boots are great in most conditions, they do not have a very deep cut sole. It’s good quality but in muddy conditions can clog quickly. Had this yesterday on a muddy chalky walk where I ended up tumbling a couple of times. I’m usually steady on my feet and to be fair I don’t know that boots with a deeper cut sole would have been any better. There were lots of marks on the track where others were having the same issue.

Would also like to comment on the reviews that say these are not waterproof. I can say categorically after years wearing them and walking through streams, that they ARE.

If someone gets a pair that are not, just get them replaced. It’s a fault with that pair not the design or materials. I had a pair replaced by Merrell after they split (I think on a rock) and this damaged the Goretex.

It’s also worth saying that waterproof boots (or clothes) can still feel wet. If the outer is soaking wet you’ll still feel some cold and damp even if no water has actually gotten in. It can feel like socks are damp (my wife notices more than me).

Try with a piece of tissue inside to check whether they are actually leaking or not. We only notice this if wading or walking though long wet grass (i.e. not really in rain).

It’s still worth having because a) it’s a short damp feeling and b) the outer will dry out quicker than if the inner and your stock was soaked.

    [Update November 2021]

My wife has continued to use these boots for our walks near home and last year for a few months in France (waterproofing not really required for either). We’ve just got back from a week in the Lakes where we did a lot of walking on flooded paths, bogs and the usual quite stony terrain etc. Both her and my boots stayed dry throughout (we do usually wear waterproof gaiters covering part of the upper), but that’s to protect trousers from mud rather than because the boots need it. Both her and my boots remain comfortable and are mostly holding up well (soles linings etc). My wife uses custom insoles, but I have the standard Merrell in (despite having used more supportive insoles in other boots).

The only additional negative I’ll add is that the trim on the uppers (I.e the leather-look strappy bits over the mesh) has not held up well. The upper surface has just flaked and peeled off on hers. Seems to happen when cleaning (even if just sprayed with a hose). Unsightly, but does not affect performance.

[Update: Dec 2018. Were managing to get at least one walk in a week since buying these averaging 6-9 miles now. Both of us find the boots supremely comfortable. My wife had some minor pressure under one toe on an 11 mile walk, but nothing major. We’ve not been out in downpours but wet grass and the odd stream splash has not been an issue. I would add to my review below that the soles are good and grippy in most conditions, but not as stiff as a heavier boot, so you will feel a rocky surface through them slightly. Not a problem, just trying to give a better impression of what these are. We have not done any walking with more than a day sack so far and only short easy scrambles.]

Bought for my wife after I bought a men’s pair. Both of us found the boots comfortable out of the box. My wife has quite a wide forefoot and a bunion on one foot, but no problems so far. I bought mine after having to give up walking for a while because I developed an issue with my heel rubbing in my (well-known major brand name) leather boots meaning I had to pre-pad or put Compeed on after about a mile on the trail. I spent ages travelling to specialists (Alt-Berg/George Fisher) trying to get a solution. Different lacing, socks, insoles did not help. I tried all the boots I could in store but no one could tell me whether or not I’d be OK with them.

Rather than wasting a pot of cash on boots like that, I went for these as they were a little bit less of a financial disaster if they were no good. Glad I did as I’ve had no problem with the heel in these.

We’ve just got back from a few days in the Lakes where we used them everyday for moderate walks over mixed ground including some rocky sections. Did a great job. I developed a slight pressure on one little toe towards the end of an 8 mile walk on which I’d done some sections as fast as I could over all terrains. I’d say that’s not bad at all.

My wife mentioned some damp feeling on one boot after crossing a shallow stream, but we’re not sure yet if there was any leak of if this was just the damp cold feeling you can get with most Goretex when the outer gets wetted out. Being a fabric/mesh I suppose this is more likely to happen quicker than a well-treated leather. There doesn’t seem to be any kind of DWR on the outer on these.

But there’s always the Gore-tex guarantee to lean on if needed. We both found the soles made crossing rocky sections quite comfortable, easy and fast. So far so good – will update if any issues (I do actually update my reviews if things change ratehr than just say it 🙂 ).

Great boots so far (his and hers)
