Was soll ich sagen, einfach gut!

    Volle Kaufempfehlung!

First off, Osprey bags are phenomenal, I own 4. I have Kestrel 48 for thru hiking.
I bought this Kestrel 38 for shorter hikes or day hikes and I feel that this size is perfect for that,

    REAL LIFE SIZING:
I am a 5’7″ male, I’m not thin. I weigh 189lbs, 43″ around chest at nipple level, 43′ around at belly button level, 20″ from C7 vertebra to lumbar.
With that being said S/M was too small.
    Exchanged for M/L.
If you feel like an average sized person as I do… M/L is for you.

TIP>>> If you bought on Amazon and need to exchange, call Back Country directly to do the exchange, this way you’ll avoid a $6.99 Amazon label fee.

Not being able to lock the chest strap into place is a pain… but not a deal breaker IMHO.

Replacing an Osprey 38 Exos. The Exos was great..2 Camino Santiagos, but the Kestrel has more room, built in rain cover and wider straps and padding. The slight weight difference is not significant. Will use this one for my next Camino Primitive. As almost 78, the extra padding is most welcome.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve carried a great many backpacks over the years & things have moved on hugely to make the current crop extremely well designed. Some styles I used back in the day are now favoured by hipsters, but I prefer to use gear from this century when sideways rain hits on a Munro. I bought this 38L Kestrel having seen a friend’s 48L while on a walk & looked at a few Osprey models in shops. At first put off by their price & normally favouring more robust gear, I’m glad I pulled the trigger on (I think) this model when I found them on sale about 18-24 months ago.

I use mine as a day sack & find it has all the features I need with only the ice axe loops never used. Through experience & an abundance of caution I tend to end up being the grown up in most walking groups, so often carry the survival basics of torch, first aid kit, spare food, brew kit & bothy bag etc. Obviously I tailor what I carry depending on conditions & itinerary and a big plus with this rucksack is if I’m packing light, or have all my foul weather gear on, the bag retains its shape & doesn’t slop around like a bag of wet lettuce. It remains the most comfortable daysack I’ve ever used.

I won’t re-list all the features, but here’s some of possible interest:
    * I use 3-section telescopic walking poles and these stow neatly & safely on the sides, baskets/points up, handles in the mesh pockets & held in place with the compression straps.
    * The mesh pockets also hold two small first aid kit pouches for easy access plus sweety wrappers securely until I get home.
    * I vary between a Platypus bladder & water bottle/s (sometimes plus a filter) & am really pleased that not only will this work with both options, but the bladder is not in with my other kit & in own section. If it leaks (which for no apparent reason it started to do while in a different expedition sack this year,) my gear won’t get drenched, which has been a concern since I started using them 10-15 years ago.
    * A piece of sealed cell foam I use as a sit mat stows nicely in the stretch front pocket if cut to shape. That also protects the OS map I stow there, as a map case flapping round my neck is not how I roll.
    * The hip pockets are plenty big enough for Snickers (other snacks are available), compass, buff, hand sanitiser, whistle, tissues, gum, chap stick etc. Lifesaver since I mostly walk in Ron Hills, so no pockets.

The only additions I’ve made are:
    * Reading/Sunglasses zip case threaded on to one shoulder strap.
    * Small pouch clipped to the chest strap for a smartphone, which also acts as camera & navigation aid of last resort when I can’t find my way out of the car park/village*. (* After 40 years of hill/walking by day & night, still the most challenging navigation moment.)

I’d buy one again, but this one’s wearing well & is so flexible I may not need to.

    Well done Osprey.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI was looking through purchases to see if I should review anything and decided to comment on this pack’s durability. I’ve used it daily for six months with no problems. The rain cover keeps it dry. The zippers are holding up.

Should note that I believe the small/medium is actually a 36L not 38 like the name infers, but you might want to double check with Osprey docs (I know it’s less…). Also, the 2018 model still has a side zipper. Or did when I bought it. Unless there’s a new revision I’d expect yours should too. Anyhow, great pack!

    Conclusin:
    Muy buena relacin calidad precio.

Bought to replace my 12 year old 38 kestrel
The new version is much improved with a few extra features plus much better hip belt and larger pouch on the back and better ventilation.
I suspect the capacity is a little bigger.
I find it more comfortable than the Osprey Talon tho a few ounces more. Not the lightest of packs but will outlast many others by a long way.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a great pack! Distribution of weight is great and it’s storage is impressive. love the frame and it’s comfortable. I’m 6’5 so I was worried about it’s more universal design fitting but it worked great. I also love that it compresses way down and can be used for a simple day hike without slack or extra size. Very nice mid size pack that easily fills the need for small day packs if you’d like. Hip Pockets are great, they increased the size to easily fit larger phones now.

My only gripe is that the top pocket is messy. it’s huge and doesn’t snug down tightly to the top of the pack. This is because the inner mesh pocket for keys and a wallet in the way. So it ends up being a lot of wasted space hanging loosely atop your neatly, snug pack. Because that top pocket is so big and doesn’t snug down, unless you throw a raincoat or something in there too, anything you have in there will be very loose on the hike. I’m considering cutting the mesh divider out honestly.
But that design flaw is the same with every Osprey hiking pack, this one just seemed more prevalent due to the nature of the compact and efficient size of this pack.

I used my Osprey Kestrel 38 for my 860 kilometre walk on the Camino de Santiago and beyond to the coast and it was ideal.
I was able to carry everything I needed for my month away. The rucksack is sturdy with great features.
I intend using it for a second walk of the Camino this year, pandemic permitting.
The bag is also fine for hiking here in the Scottish highlands and Islands.
Sure if you spend the money you can get a lighter bag but I’ll bet it wont last as long as the Kestrel.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI’ve had two previous generation Kestrels (both a 38 and a 48), and have loved them!! This new version of the 38 pack (2020) has a number of small, but important improvements:
    – First, the new version DOES still include the vertical side access zipper into the main pocket (I’ve read elsewhere that it doesn’t).
    – The zippers have been improved — with bigger pulls (that now you actually can get your finger thru!) and one size larger sliders on: sleeping bag compartment; main compartment side access; top outside pocket; both waist belt pockets.
    – The two waist belt pockets, in addition to having the bigger zippers, have been redesigned. This has made them MUCH easier to open/close/access than with the previous version of the Kestrel — now the pockets open and close like budder!!
    – Personally, I don’t like the new “daisy chain” attachment points on the front of the pack — I prefer those of the previous generation Kestrel. That said, the new design, along with the new “straightjacket” compression strap feature, will make it easier to carry things like snowshoes on the back of the pack.
    – IMO they should not have changed the aux strap attachments on the top of the pack — those found on the previous Kestrel were much more useful in practice (the new ones are 90 degrees off).
    – The front stash pocket is made of more durable material in the new version. The overall packbag material is different in the new version — but I don’t see it as being better or worse.

All in all, I think Osprey really got it right with the new generation of the Kestrel 38. Nice job, Osprey!!!

(Full disclosure — I’ve been a long-time Osprey fan, and have owned — and own — many of their packs.)

Golden Review Award: 23 From Our UsersZaino di qualit, Osprey, che fa solo zaini e li fa bene.

E’ pi largo come zaino, cosa in certe situazioni pu risultare scomodo (ferrata es.).
Personalmente ritengo migliore l’Osprey e pi versatile.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersI am using this pack on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Osprey packs are commonplace on the Camino and the Kestrel seems to be one of the most popular choices. Good sturdy pack although noticeably heavier than the Exos the extra weight translates into durability and ease of use. The shoulder straps and the rest of the suspension system work very well and are very comfortable. Like the attached rain cover and the colour matches the standard road vests in Spain so you can easily be identified in wet or misty weather – important when road-walking. The sleeping bag compartment is excellent and suits my sleep system very well. Makes it easy to pull out and lay claim to your bunk when you arrive in an albergue (hostel style accommodation) The option for carrying water bottles on a forward slant makes them easy to access and replace. Overall a great pack for the Camino. Osprey’s guarantee is absolutely stellar.
