Loved this pack (was smaller than I ultimately realized I wanted but that’s not its fault). Super adjustable and great fit and features. Loved the colour, too. The only flaw I could identify – and this seems to go for all Osprey packs – was the hip-belt pockets are weirdly and way too difficult to zip with one hand.
Even though it has AirSpeed backpanel with adjustable shoulder harness to fit a wide range of torso lengths, 1. none of the interval fits me. No matter how I adjust, there’s always a gap between my shoulder and the shoulder straps. I tried all heights! 2. Also, after changing the height of the shoulder harness, the hip belt becomes too high. 3. When I load my clothes n stuff, the backpack shifts when I walk.
I’m very disappointed that this bag doesn’t fit me given it’s such a good brand, great concept – adjustable torso lengths, cooling mesh for the back, a colour I like and at such a great discount. I’m sad that it doesn’t fit me : (
But I’m relieved that Amazon made the Return easy and fuss-free.
Super comfortable and adjustable (I’m 5’5″ sitting at 115lbs and I was able to adjust the pack to my bod easily). I wasn’t a fan of the non-removable frame at first, but I’ve grown to love it. My partner and I are planning some bigger hikes across Central and South America and I have full confidence this pack will do the job.
I typically pack light so if you’re a heavy packer, I’m not sure if this backpack would be big enough if you’re taking trips over two weeks long. But for me, this was large enough to handle a two week time span.
I love the compartment on the very bottom that keeps things separated, if needed. You can take the separator down if you want one big pocket.
The compartment at the top is massive and worked well to carry all the things I needed quick access to (sunglasses, chargers, headphones, a few books, etc.,). The zipper to the top compartment is kind of hidden, so I wasn’t worried about theft/security and had no issues.
I highly recommend this pack for traveling and longer hikes!
Bought as a present for daughter.. not been used in any hardy conditions yet but on first inspection it looks great.. she is delighted.
My daughter came back from a 50 mile hike with gear on her back and she said the last thing she thought about was the Backpacking Backpack…
We are taking a trip from the US to the Philippines in a few days. I know I will be hopping on several modes of transportation before arriving to my destination we will be catching Planes, Boats, Buses and taxis. I don’t want to drag a bag behind me and opted for a backpack instead. I got 40lbs of stuff in this bag with room left. I purchased a bag for checking the bag at the airport and it worked out great. It’s attractive and comfortable..
My friend and I backpacker 50 miles across Isle Royale last summer. This was a great, lightweight, roomy backpack for the trip.
I don’t think the cost is reasonable and I wish it had more outer pockets. However I do think overall it was a good choice for a backpacking bag. It was fairly waterproof and comfortable on me.
I just got this for more of a travel bag than hiking, while I might plan a hike or car camping one day. It’s pretty big but not so big that I feel weird carrying it, that was a plus for me. However, I’m not sure how it would work for longer than weekend trips or if you were visiting a colder area of the world. I am a bad over-packer so if you are more of a minimalist packer you could probably make it work. If you are looking for your first hiking bag this might be a good choice as you get a lot for your buck and great quality.
The biggest reason I chose the Renn 65 is I have the Osprey Daylite+ that I thought I could force myself to pack lighter for weekend bus trips back to visit family. I wasn’t totally wrong but I had the Daylight+ stuffed full. I wanted to not destroy the Daylite+ with my trips back and forth so I upgraded to the Renn 65. I also like that you can attach the Daylite+ to the Renn which is actually really easy once you figure out how. If I do end up using hiking packs for trips by air or on longer/overseas trips I would likely get another backpack from Osprey. I’m very happy with Osprey’s quality!
As for weight, I think my stuff might weigh around 10-15 lbs but it feels more like only the weight of the bag on. I think I would happily walk the 2 miles from the bus station to my apartment back home. I think it would also feel the same if you have 25lb or so if traveling by air.
The only thing I wish the Renn had was a bit big side pockets or at least on the women’s version. I ended up getting an Osprey Daylite belt pack to use as a purse because my phone, coin purse, and a few purse items wouldn’t fit into them. It would have been nice to go without needing a purse while traveling on the bus. Other than that the Renn is a super nice backpack and I think I’ll love using it.
NOTE: I gave 3 stars for travel as unless you already pack like a hiker it fills up quickly. I did use a 32L compression sack and it does help but because I had two bulky items it seemed to have taken up half the bag. I did pack for the weekend last weekend for my family of 4 and fit all the items I normally did in a duffle bag I use.
Quick torso adjustment made it simple to find the best fit while I was on trail.
I’m a smaller person and I find this pack fits me like a glove, there’s no sloppy excess movement as you climb over/under things.
Lash loop on the front and top of lid let you add cord to strap things on the outside .
Con- Sleeping bag zipper doesn’t zip smoothly due to the overall shape of the zipper. Lid has one zipper that is narrow so you can’t open the pocket wide and look in. .
Hip belt pockets are on the small side.
None of these cons are deal breakers since the over all function, fit an d comfort of the pack is fantastic. If they ever made a new Renn with extra pockets i’d definitely buy it again.
Roomy bag for backpacking. But If you have a longer torso then I suggest going with the men’s as it is a little longer body. even with the adjustable back support it sits weird for a long torso. It pulls in the shoulders a bit and leaves your shoulders sore after a long walk. But the color is amazing and I love the lifetime guarantee of the bag. Recommend for a short backpacking adventure definitely not for a long haul.
Trying this pack on versus another one in REI, this pack made the same weight load feel significantly lighter by the way it carries the wait. Fantastic price point and super comfortable for backpacking.
Took the backpack on a 11 day canoe backpacking trip in the Boundary Waters. It held up amazing, and the pack stayed super comfortable. I live the mesh backing that keeps the pack off your back as it definitely helps with cooling off your back.
Good pack for travel or outdoor backpacking, just wish the top compartment was removable since it’s hard to store stuff in it as is. But I guess that’s what you pay the additional money for with the higher model
I used this pack for a havasupai trip which was 3 nights in the Grand Canyon. This back was perfect for the trip!
Pros:
– The pack sizing is adjustable so I was able to make it fit my torso correct
– The main pack area is very large
– The pack comes with a rain fly
Cons:
– limited exterior latching points
– limited pockets, basic pack
– The waist has limited padding
All in all this is a great pack and functions great for a 3-4 night trip. It is somewhat primitive compared to other Osprey packs but for the price it is a great option. I would recommend
I have only tested it on a few short outings and will be thoroughly tested over the next three weeks but so far it is a great backpack!
