I set this up as a home base,I FEEL I need a better antenna
Great quality, rugged construction- just as good if not better than yaesu and Icom competitors.
Allround great performance and excellent value for money.
Good value for money, would have liked a brighter display but thats a minor detail. Great on receive to the point where i have sold two radios that don’t perform as well.
Excellent product to introduce you to amateur radio, comes with the programming cable to connect to your computer. Free software is available to download from the internet to program in the memory channels on the radio.
A small 5 amp power supply will work the radio on low power 5w which is ideal for foundation level. You will need a licence to transmit on the radio, but you do not need one to listen only.
Display is very bright and easy to read, you can monitor 2 frequencies at the same time, the microphone is back lit, I have had excellent signal reports from transmissions I have made.
This is a cracking little radio which is fairly easy to set up & use. One slight issue – the radio suffered the “white screen bug” after 3 months light use. (The rig is fully operational but the screen goes completely blank). Retevis Customer Services were very helpful, & quickly offered a replacement. They refunded the postage (back to Germany) and shipped a replacement rig without any arguments as soon as I sent a pic of the postal receipts. Great after sales service, & I would definitely use them again having seen how good their CS is in the event of any problems.
Before you use this radio, factory reset it!
I spent over an hour programming repeaters into it only to discover that there was no receive sound. I had to reset it and then had to restart the programming again.
Once reset, it works perfect, it’s easy to program and set up.
I’m very impressed by this little radio, the screen is easy to read and microphone feels good in your hand.
Very good mobile radio for the money. 25W seems to be adequate for working the repeaters. I get good reports on audio too. Mounted it in the car with accessory 12V lighter plug. I would suggest external speaker, built in speaker is so so.
Liked the radio control’s in general dislike the way the mike doesn’t have a sturdy connection to the radio the way a cb would have. You find yourself worried incase you damage it.
I was very happy with my radio, have enjoyed using it the input stage is very good the input/ receive stage is not deaf at all programming with chirp is easy now its supported but saying that, I would use theRetevis programming software for configuration is best to use to set up the many functions
I’m sure it will be easy I just need to read up on it.
But seems to be working as it should.
Cannot find a single gripe about this radio. Clear bright screen, easy software programming solid build.
This radio is the mobile/driver users dream in my opinion. Hand mic can be programmed with shortcuts, swap VFO’s and volume etc.
Some reviews complain about the modulation being quiet, but I find its only 1 in a dozen operators who remark on quiet audio.
Have used it mobile for a month now and I have had copies a good 60-70 miles away and worked repeaters with similar distances on the mobile Nagoya 2/70 on mirror mount.
Loud audio with generous number of volume steps (36) mean I can find a setting that isn’t to loud or quiet unlike my HT that is one or the other.
Runs OK on 7amp mostly for home use into a slim jim im getting into repeaters in Southport, Buxton and Wales with ease running mid power.
On 70cm the radio runs hotter on 25w but for general QSO not an issue.
Smaller than you imagine when you look at it.
The microphone is really solid and not creaky.
Nothing bad to say at all. Love it… would buy another just to save swapping to the car!
Free programming software from Retevis. Easy to program works well and easy to use. Compact and lightweight. I have used the CB version of this radio and thay are both good value
What can I say, Fantastic really good and smashing are words that comes to mind when using this radio.
Easy to program and loads of features, audio is excellent and it’s just what I wanted for my Land Rover, I watched a few videos online I was ready to go.
I haven’t programme one for years but it was easy and only took an hour.
(Please remember that you need a valid license to use this radio) and always read the manual before use or fitting to your vehicle.
I’m having lots of fun using it in the vehicle.
I was really happy with the service I received from Amazon.
The product arrived very quickly and was well packaged. In the box you get the radio, mounting bracket with thumb turn screws, foam pads to stop the bracket rubbing on the radio body, self tapping screws to fasten the bracket to the vehicle, 2 metre approx. power lead with inline fuse, spare fuse, keypad microphone, programming cable and user guide. My user guide was in German, however the guys at Retevis provided me with the English download.
The radio looks professionally designed and assembled. The centre piece is the colour display, which while small is easily readable and displays everything you need. 2 S meters can be displayed when in dual watch mode, they look great. Functions are selected via 6 programmable buttons, all very easy to set up. Note that there is no fan on the radio, the body does get warm particularly if you are transmitting on 25W for any length of time. The speaker is mounted on the underside of the radio and the audio quality is excellent.
Minor drawback is that you can only use 5 character channel names on the display. This is OK if you are setting up repeaters, e.g. GB3HG, as they fit perfectly, but would be better if this could be longer.
It is very easy to perform Reverse Repeater, i.e. listen on the input of a repeater to determine if you can work a station simplex. This sets it aside from some of the other “amateur” radios available for a few pounds less.
Note that whilst you have a dual watch feature you do not have two independent receivers. If you are receiving on one bank the other bank is not available.
The hand microphone has a good rugged feel to it and is well illuminated for easy operation in the dark. I’m not sure why the A/B button has to be so large! The LEDs on the microphone indicate which Dual Watch bank you are using, and separate LEDs illuminate either red or green to show when you are transmitting or receiving on each bank. The handset also has a built in speaker that can be turned on / off by the radio software. On the side is the PTT button, up/down buttons and a lock slide switch to stop you changing frequency inadvertently. Yes, you can send DTMF from the keypad, and there are 4 programmable buttons there too. I’ve had good reports of transmission quality.
All in all a very good radio at a very good price.
