Have a couple of vest from another brand that work great and that I love but this was on sale for a ridiculous low price so figured what the heck! The rest is history!
This vest is super comfortable and holds everything I need to be self supported for at least a 50K. Personally I snack a lot while running so for me probably wouldn’t be able to fit enough fuel for more than that distance. I’d be nervous I would run out. If you don’t carry essentials or gear in the back pocket you could easily fill that with more fueling items for further distances.
So many great features on this thing and love the bungee chest strap. Not sure if it’s just me but the the thicker straps on some vest don’t feel as dialed in. I’ve worn it for at least 350 miles of use already and no issues with durability, ripping, tearing or stitching coming lose and I’m not exactly gentle with gear. Things constantly get tossed around between my car and the house.
For reference I’m a small frame female 5’3 120lbs, bust 36C and the extra small could be smaller but I’m able to tighten it enough to fit.
I’ve just increased my regular running distance to half marathons. This is perfect for carrying water and my keys. Loving the bottles that it comes with! I’m a larger guy, so i need to wear the vest on the loosest. But it’s completely comfortable, no issues!
I bought this for a half marathon I ran. I took it on a good few practice runs before hand and it always worked perfectly.
The fit was great it did not bounce around even with 2 full flasks. The elastic on the front helps to adjust this fit and as an added bonus I could tuck my cap here when it wasn’t required.
The storage for me was perfect. For my race I took a full flask, some energy gels (in the handy pockets at the front) and stuck my top in the main compartment just before the race. Even with this on my back I hardly noticed the pack.
I definitely recommend this vest and will be taking mine on many more runs to come.
I regularly run weekend long runs of 15 miles or more and am an extremely heavy sweater, I have previously suffered a very severe heat injury and wanted the ability to bring a good amount of fluid with my on a run. This product fits perfectly, comes with two very useful water bottles and has a surprising amount of space in the back and pockets. I can take everything with me for a long run without an discomfort or difficulty.
Good vest, which is lightweight and has all the pockets you need. The bottles work well, though will need a good clean to remove the string initial plastic taste.
The only downside was that when full, the bottles do bounce up and down when you run. I tightened the vest and this limited the bounce (but can only go so tight) and the vest made me pretty hot (it’s like wearing an extra layer) which I thought was a little counterintuitive.
Hrt man so kaum, passt also. Tolle Weste
I bought this for a trail half marathon as I needed to bring compulsory kit. It fitted everything in easily, and was super lightweight and comfortable. The plastic bottles did have that weird taste but they are brand new so I suspect this will disappear over time. Also when full they did bounce around quite a bit but as I hiking up a mountain then only running in flats and back down it wasn’t a big deal. Overall I’m pleased with my purchase.
After 3 months regular use:
– Great fit, light, comfortable. Used the sizing guide on Salomon website and fit perfect.
-No tears/ defects as yet in mesh/ zips etc and I use the pack alot.
-Can fit so much in the stretchy side pockets, really handy for quick easy access.
-Waterbottles sit well and don’t drop down or flop about for me, when the elastic loop is used.
-The water bottles taste awful when new. I cleaned with a heavily diluted white vinegar solution a few times and eventually they were fine. Top tip, keep them in the freezer between runs as it prevents mould.
-Price on Amazon is great, couldn’t find cheaper.
-Personal point- I wish there was a horizontal zip pocket below the chest for phone rather than the vertical one on the chest because- boobs.
If you need one I would recommend this one. It carries what I need but I almost forget I’m wearing it and can just enjoy the run without it hindering me/ having to adjust etc.
A great, lightweight hydro vest for running. Enough pockets for all key items, and very light. Only reason its gets 4 stars and not 5 is that the pocket zipper broke. I liked the vest so much however, that I bought the exact same one again.
I never write reviews but I decided to leave notes related to info I couldn’t find myself in case it helps others.
Firstly, I am a male and my dimensions are: 5’7″ tall 42″ chest 30″ waist.
My review follows a 15-mile trail run of stage two of the West Highland Way in 14C heat and I wore the vest over an Adidas tech fit compression T-shirt.
With this 8-litre Salomon vest I bought in size medium and it was perfectly sized – it gives the *right* kind of snug fit so nothing moves while you do while still having loads of movement to loosen the elastic toggles should you wish for a slacker fit.
Having never had a vest like this before, I was concerned chest-mounted bottles and padded front would increase risk of/cause nipple chaffing – it did not. I had no problems with any kind of rubbing, not even on the shoulders.
The zippers were all solid and didn’t slip – the bottles provided are secure and watertight. A few people complained about a plastic flavour – they are obviously not used to properly cleaning bottles in the first place. On receipt simply fill each bottle with water and drop in a Steradent cleaning tablet (yes, the ones designed for dentures) and the bottle will be clean and leave behind no plastic taste. This is common practice for any bladder or bottle so don’t worry about other reviews of this nature.
Cons
The main compartment has ample storage however the outer material is not a tough waterproof membrane as you’d expect like that on a rucksack – it’s simply a see through mesh-like fabric. While it is strong I would be concerned about using this in the rain – one would have to wrap their belongings in dry bags to prevent water ingress.
The whistle is rubbish. Like utter rubbish. Salomon frankly shouldn’t have even bothered. I cut mine off and attached my own.
The mesh membrane pockets on the front are good however I would advise against putting your keys in the one with the zip – I looked down and noticed my front door key starting to stretch the material. As I caught this I could quickly put it in the main compartment and avoid a tear, but I fear keys could tear this membrane pocket easily – especially in the event of a fall or if it scrapes off a rock during scrambles.
There is a pouch in the main compartment with a key clip however this pouch cannot be securely closed with Velcro or a zip so items may fall out. This pouch is also at the top of the main compartment which I think is a poor design – sure it puts things in easy reach but as people are more likely to use this for keys or a phone it makes the top of the vest heavier than it needs to (not to mention having the jingling of keys right by your ear – Salomon, if you want to fit an interior pouch, put it at the bottom of the main compartment and give it a way to close securely).
When you tighten the front of the vest you’re left with a long dangly piece of cord with now where to tuck it out the way – not a big deal as it can be tucked in behind the fabric but I’m *looking* for misgivings here in the interest of objectivity.
While it’s only been one run in I hope these initial thoughts help others.
All things considered, I LOVE this vest. You always have to compromise on something with whatever we buy, but the comfort, fit and overall practicality of this item outweighs niggles of whistles, pouches and cords. (Then of course there’s the value of the free bottles which are usually 20 each so it means the whole purchase with vest and two bottles is a real bargain.)
This will undoubtedly be my go-to vest from now on.
There’s an age old saying you get what you pay for, well nothing could be truer than with this product.
Outstanding
People say they come up big, but I bought the appropriate size and found it a bit tight across my chest. It is also quite warm as it is enclosed on the flanks whereas some vests are open.
However,I will caveat by saying it is well designed, well made and very well designed with pockets, and compartment compared to some others.
Awesome vest. Used this for my first 50k race and I could hardly feel that I was wearing it, which is what you want when you are running for a long time. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into the design to make maximum use out of the pockets and compartments while keeping them minimal. My previous (OMM brand) vest was too bulky and had too many unnecessary pockets I didn’t use. Not this one. I had three gels in each of the two front mesh pockets which were easy to get to and no chance of them falling out. The back pocket is securely zipped and in my case held a couple of energy bars and a first aid kit. The two collapsible bottles are well placed and easy to drink from while on the move. I did have to refill them once at an aid station and they are a bit tricky to squeeze back into the pockets, but that would be overcome with practice. I was running with the vest on for nearly 6 hours and suffered no discomfort or rubbing. The only minor niggle I have is that when the bottles were full I found that the inside of my left forearm occasionally brushed the zip of the left side compartment (the right side, looking down, doesn’t have a zip pocket). But this may just be due to my running style and was only when the bottles were full. All in all I found the 8l vest perfect for a 50k run. In terms of sizing I bought an XL vest. Normally I take a L shirt size. The XL was perfect for me.
Best fitting pack I’ve ever had well worth the money
Good snug fit. Two 500ml soft bottles. Single front zip fro phone keys etc. Two open pockets for gels. Big back pocket for jacket.
Upgraded with a matching drink straw
Did research. Considered more expensive Innov8. Happy with choice
Love it, rave about it! Perfect for my half marathons and any runs where i fancy carrying some items or fluid.
Fits comfortably and has so many cool pockets – holds a phone well with no movement and the backpack is actually quite large so i can even use on my commute to work
10/10
Sizing good, comfort excellent. Definitely the right storage volume for up to 20 mile runs and probably longer supported one. Will see about further unsupported soon!
Great running vest, it’s simple to use. It’s got two big pockets for storage, the added bottles are great bonus. The only problem is that, the bottles tend to bounce when you’re really sprinting, but it’s nothing major.
Overall good product, really happy with the purchase.
Worth the money. Its a great fit, even on a slightly more “top heavy” woman. I measured just on the size boundary so went up a size, and it fits nicely. Probably could have gotten away with the “measured” size. The materials sufficiently robust without feeling weighty or tight. The bottles are fine, some complain of a funny taste but I didn’t experience this. Its very adjustable so you always feel comfortable wearing it. I wear it running, walking, cycling, and (when possible) could even wear horse riding because it doesn’t shift about or make the rustly noise as with some backpacks. It’s breathable, padded enough not to cause pressure points, and is exactly as described.
They say you end up spending more if you keep going for the cheaper alternatives so decided to buy this vest on the basis of other reviews and overall this is a great product and ideal for what I was looking for. It’s a must-buy for anyone who enjoys long distance running, walking or hiking on flats or hills. I ordered the size M and I’m a 6ft1, 85kg + 38in chest male. Here’s a quick overview of this Salomon Hydration 8L Vest-
Pros:
+ Lightweight, comfortable and snug fit
+ Looks and feels great
+ Plenty of different pockets for storage (phone, gels, extra layers, torch, food etc)
+ Zip pockets ensure that items are safely stored
+ Potential of inserting bigger reservoir for water in the back (2L would be advised)
+ Stretchy material and elastic straps which can be changed to fit your body
Cons:
– Plastic taste on soft flasks (even after several washes)
– Vest can move / jump around a bit while on runs (depending on weight distribution)
All in all, a fantastic hydration vest and it’s worth spending that bit more for a top of the range! If you’re hesitating whether or not to get this, then don’t. Buy the vest and you won’t regret it!
you pay the price and you get what you paid for, worth paying more than 50 for this, would last long and you wont regret the quality. Good material and comfort is great.
Awesome hydration pack. Genuine Salomon unbeatable value since it also comes with 2 X 500ml flasks. Some comments that the bottles slip down but if you put the bungee round the shoulder of the bottle rather than the neck then this isn’t a problem. I’m 6’2″ BMI is 25, ordered a large and happy with the fit.
3 hour run and the vest was comfortable and had room for Avery thing required including extras for the unforeseen, rain etc. Will be using on all long runs and possibly walks too.
Good fitting vest, been using it nearly every day for a month and it’s super comfortable.
Bottles are good size and easy to access. I don’t remove them to drink as it is not needed and I expect it would be quite hard to put them back in but it’s easy to drink from them whilst running.
The price is very competitive with what’s out there.
Been in the washing machine once a week and so far so good.
I’ve tried many but finally a hydration vest I’m happy with! Had to make a couple of mods but it’s a great vest and I’m very pleased with my purchase. I’m a 45″ chest so went for the XL it’s a snug fit which was fine for short runs up to 14-15 miles but more than that it felt a little restrictive towards the end of a run for me. Luckily some good design and forethought by Salomon mean that the elastic chest strap system is very easily swapped out or replaced (full marks to Salomon for that!) I simply bought some round 2mm elastic cord and made a longer strap. Very easy process and just needs a simple knot at each end. Another little issue as others have mentioned is the issue with soft flasks, the retention system needs a tweak in my opinion but is easily solved by putting a thin plastic washer between the bottle and the mouth piece. Put the elastic pocket loop over the top and between the washer and bottle and hey presto it stays put and doesn’t sink down in the pocket as it empties. I made my own from an old Tupperware lid but you can buy HDPE plumbing washers with a 28mm hole on a certain auction site. Maybe Salomon might add something similar one day? (The washers work best with the clear flask tops not the silver/grey ones but I had spares from other flasks so not a problem for me) these issues aside I’m super happy with it, plenty of storage and for once a front zip compartment that you can actually put a phone in!
An added bonus (for a guy!) I’ve found with this vest is that the design of the chest strap means I can get away without using nip shields up to a half marathon and beyond as it keeps any ‘moob bounce’ in check…result!
This is better than expected. Fits like a glove; the first time I took it on a run informed me that I had made the right choice. Absolutely delighted with the way it fits and how it keeps close to the body with no movement at all. plenty space for carrying all you need even Waterproofs, phone and food etc.Great purchase.
