These are very good shoes especially for the price range. I use them quite a lot and they can withstand a lot. However, I will say that they are not as durable as some people say. If you use them often especially in bad weather, during which they get covered in mud, over time they will degrade. The last pair lasted me more or less one year and I use them quite often in bad weather and I put them under quite a lot of stress. This is normal, but I think it’s worth keeping it in mind. If you plan to use them for some causal running or trekking, they can last for a much longer time.
I use these for mountainbiking. Great grip. Lightweight. You can get off and rappelle up a mountain of gooey mud slime and make it look like an effortless and elegant dance move.
You will make new friends because they are so stylish, find that elusive promotion at work and at least Sara will give up blowing your advances off and finally give in to your seductions. Thank you, King Salomo
Very grippy, good water resistance due to gore-tex, obviously deep water will penetrate due to low sides. Not a fast shoe, feels a bit like a football boot on, but provides grip in muddy conditions. They need wearing in a bit for comfort and some may require a half size bigger. Quick release laces seem fine, not sure about long term though, only time will tell
These are great shoes for trail running, and really waterproof. However it is worth having a different pair of shoes for road running because the grip on these will wear away in no time on the road. Also they are not great on ice.
These are close-fitting (need a shoe-horn to put on) and very grippy, with a big tread on the sole. My previous pay lasted 7 years, worn flat during lock-down and over a thousand miles of hiking. I expect these to last a similar period. Also, they are quite high around the ankle and waterproof, so great for bad weather.
Good trainer but does take some getting used to. Feels a little like wearing a football boot which can be a bit strange on paved areas.
For me this is one of the best shoes made by Salomon. It’s super comfortable, fits perfectly and looks great. It’s also the GTX Gore-tex version which gives you the extra confidence in the wet. This model has of course been superseded by v5 and v6. But they are not as good as this v4 in my opinion.
Bought a 2nd pair after the first ones were just worm out. Had them over 2 years, so good value for money.
I must stress, I only use them as normal every day trainers, not fell running.
I have 3 other pair of Salomons. Highly recommended.
I’d wanted a pair of these for a while, and eventually took the plunge whilst they were on at 90.
I haven’t bought them for trail running or anything particularly high performance, just walks with the family, pitch side with the children and casually. I’ll wear them with jeans and tracksuits bottoms. I think they look nice.
The grip is brilliant, I like the speed laces and they have a nice premium feel.
They size small and are a bit tight around the front of the foot, but I reckon they’ll ease.
I would have bought the wider fit ones, but the ones I found were c.170 so much took a chance on these. Happy I did.
Great shoes only wear Salomons, blue was slight brighter than I thought, apart from that everything perfect as usual
The shoes are hard wearing – lasting for a year of regular use(say around 25 miles a week) on trails in all weather conditions. The waterproofing fine for most of this time. As it is the second pair i have purchased it demonstrates i was happy with the first purchase
Before buying these trainers go up a size as there are small fitting i am a 8 but 9 fits me perfect I never pay this much for running trainers usely but I had heard who good salomon was so I thought I would give them a go THEIR BRILLIANT!! I ran a 5 miles canal run in very very heavy rain I was soaked though but my socks & feet where perfectly dry BEST MONEY I HAVE EVER SENT!! so if your going to pay nearly100 for trainers buy salomon gortex trainers I will Definitely be buying some more Salomon trainers I will look no further!! This girl knows what she’s wants from now on!!
Fantastic pair of trainers to keep your feet dry, a little hard to start with and a little narrow. I’d suggest to buy half a size up. Third pair I’ve had.
These are literally the best trainers I’ve had. Expensive, but you get what you pay for. Work as a sailing instructor and these trainers saves carrying 2 pairs of shoes. Comfortable, always dry, (whatever the weather). The added bonus is they look good and with the quick lacing toggle, make them easy to put on in 2 secs.. Happy days
.
Down side is the price; also, long term, not sure how the weak looking laces will hold-up. So far so good.
Speed cross 4 GTX. Second pair of these and they’re great.
I’m a size 9 to 9.5 neither slim nor overly wide feet and the 9.5 fit well
Good cushioning
Good water protection (used in muddy trails with watery mud up to the laces)
Good grip.
5* for performance but 4* overall as they are at 100 plus…just a bit expensive.
This is the third pair i’ve purchased and even with daily use, i get about 2 years out of a pair until they are retired to painting duty. I’m size 11.5 / 46 and they are very lightweight. i mainly use them for cycling commute (cleats are not good for city work) and they keep my feet nice and snug. Great for outdoor hike, trail run and general gym workout. the lacing system is easy to use and overall comfort is impressive. I have long, narrow feet and find Solomon to be well suited. Not sure if a wider foot would suit but noticed a wide option so check that out if needed. They look stylish and you can get away with them a pub trip easily. Can’t fault them TBH. Look out for discount as at full RRP they are at the steep end.
Pros: Fit well. Great shoe laces system to get the perfect fit. Comfortable. Great for the trails. Water proof. Great price point. No blisters. Comfortable enough to run all day in.
Cons: Could be a bit heavy if your not used to trail running trainers.
Honestly these are possibly the best all round trail runner I’ve worn. They are super comfortable and I don’t suffer from blisters in them at all. I’ve run 100s of miles in them and there still going strong. I’ve trained and ran a 100km race in them. I highly rate them. They support the arch of the foot well giving them a sense of stability. Grip to the trails well. Bulky enough to give them lasting durability.
Conclusion: ultimately a comfortable running shoe. A shoe that’s a pleasure to run a long way in. To run all day in. Suitable all year around. Grips well. Durable to handle all terrain. I would highly recommend if your looking to buy a trail running trainer that’s priced competitively.
If your looking for a super light road running trainer then look elsewhere these are not for you.
I would highly recommend and think you will be pushed to find something better at the price point. I picked these up for 80. I will 100% be buying again.
Good reliable trail running shoes with great grip. Had exactly the same pair previously – 7 years old, so sole basically used up but not torn or anything so very well built!! The new ones have a different fit from the old ones which is more restrictive (narrower) and not so flexible but maybe these will loosen up over time and use. The tongue in the new ones is fixed and cannot be moved (unlike the old ones) which adds to the inflexibility as this makes it harder to tighten the laces to just the right place. The shoes are water resistant rather than waterproof so be careful. Hopefully the new ones will last me another 7 years….
These are great really comfortable, love the lace system so much better than normal laces. They are as you would expect from this brand extremely well made and comfortable, used them last weekend in the rain and sleet for outside HIIT training including dragging a heave sled and had really good traction (and dry feet).
My only comment is they size small – I am a size 10 / 10.5 occasionally but went for size 11 in these and they are a perfect fit – so go at least half a size up on your normal size. I have weak ankles from sport and found these to be providing solid ankle and arch support. Highly recommended.
Bought this due to seeing them for a fantastic price. The quality is definitely there and they certainly distinguish themselves from a typically 30 pair of running trainers. The “laces” I thought might be a problem, but in fact I far prefer them over typical laces, they keep a solid tightness until you release them, even over a long run, I didn’t feel like they were loosing up.
They fit perfectly (size 10) and the insole fits my foot arch very nicely (normal arched feet) and overall feel perfect on my feet.
These are clearly intended for off road / trail running due to the tread. However, having done some street runs with them, I felt steady and had plenty of grip in dry and wet. They however perform exceptionally on a trail surfaces, I’m sure their are better suited versions of these shoes for road runs if that’s the only purpose you need them.
Overall, highly recommend. I’m not sure I’d pay over 100 for them as that seem to be their retail price, but certainly worth it below that price.
After reading many reviews i;ve been swayed to buy and haven’t regretted it.
They have really decent chunky stud like rubber protrusion on the sole that grips mud nicely, but still flexes and gives when running on hard surfaces and tarmac.
I agree with other reviews that, that they have a narrow base, and it is advisable to go for a 1/2 large than normal.
I wear a 9 (43) in most sport shoes, and can fit in a 8.5 (42) of some brands. Based on other peoples advise i went for a 9.5 (44) and have found this to be an appropriate fit. They are an enveloping fit around the base and arch of my foot without being baggy on top and without excessive space at the end. I’ve worn them with both normal and slightly thicker winter socks and they’ve been great,, after a bit of playing with the speed laces to properly adjust.
I haven’t been able to full test the water proofing yet, but i’ve ran through lots of boggy muddy paths with no slipping or water leakage.
****I returned this product only because it was not what I was after so review is based on opinion without wearing****
First impressions were that these trail shoes are extremely well made and robust. They fit slightly small but some may find sizing up too much; I tried both 10.5 and 11 (usually a 10.5) and I couldn’t decide which would better. The shoe is self appears to offer extremely good protection through the sole and the upper and is very firm all round (I was looking for a light rail shoe like the Soloman Alphacross Blast).
I’ve used these for over 18 months and are the only pair of trail running shoes I’ve used. That’s the caveat, I can only compare them to road running shoes.
1) I’m not convinced they suit me feet over 20 miles.
2) The firm sole (by the nature of trail shoes) make your feat fatigue a lot faster than they would normally. As a result I only wear these where my runs are circa 75% or I know the course to be technical (or weather conditions make the majority of the course technical).
3) The goretex layer does work very well in comparison to road shoes. Your road shoes are hyper ventilated so just by walk through tall wet grass your feet will get wet. This will prevent that. Also your pretty safe submerging your foot in puddles up to the bottom of the tongue.
Great shoes for trail running. Grips like claws on loose and soft ground. Hard soles protect from stoney tracks. Goretex is waterproof having run on beaches and through shallow puddles and streams, feet kept dry.
Having read reviews fit was smaller than expected. Went up a full shoe size from formal leather shoes and up half a size on my road running shoes. They are also narrow in the toe box so need good socks to avoid pressure points and break them in before a doing a long run.
Compared to my road running shoes they don’t breathe as well, but this is to be expected when waterproof. The ride on road is very firm so you really need to stay on soft ground.
Lock lace is good simple idea. But can be over tight at the top and can loosen over the run. The laces tuck into the tongue which is a great simple idea.
After around 40 miles of running so far very pleased with them.
These are a great pair of trail running shoes if you’re going to be exclusively running on soft ground (grass, mud, earth, sand, etc). They are comfortable, sturdy, waterproof, supportive on uneven ground, and will take a battering in their stride (no pun intended!). I have a neutral pronation and these shoes feel good for me over long distances. However, they are clearly designed for digging into soft ground and therefore have a relatively small contact area with hard surfaces due to their stud like tread configuration. The rubber is soft so traction on tarmac is not in itself a problem. However, due to the stud configuration and softness of the rubber, you will get very few miles from them on tarmac surfaces before the studs wear out. So much so that I don’t use them when I’m running trails that include any tarmac surface whatsoever, and have bought a pair of Saucony Trail Runners for such purposes. They are awesome for tough mudder / hell runner type events etc, but I wouldn’t rely on them as my only trail runner as I suspect I’d need a new pair every 200km or so. Put into context I ‘broke them in’ with a 6km walk to the pub on the road and saw significant signs of wear to the studs as a result.
Great would recommend. I bought a 1/2 size bigger and fit well. Great for very muddy cross country, forest, fields and also multi terrain sections e.g. sections of road in between. I was worried what they would be like on shorter road sections but they were ok. Had slight blister but that was after 11mile very difficult hilly multi terrain run and I’d only worn the shoes once for short 3 mile run the day before i.e. it was my 1st long run with them. They are more sturdy than normal running shoes so I would expect to get blisters etc especially to start with. The laces are great, give you much tighter fit that doesn’t come loose during the run. It’s only the second pair of trail shoes I’ve bought but these are much better than my previous ASICS Gel Sonoma.
I’m sure there are better shoes for those endurance / ultra runners or for those who only run e.g. on mud/fields who want spikes etc – I’m very new to trail running but found these work for me!
