I bought a GTX version (made in India)
I had been using a Salomon Solaris GTX for more than 13years (but I do trips from 10 to 20 / year). I did plenty of trips in that in many EU countries especially in (high) mountains in summer times and lower hills in winter times. I expected/would expect the same quality and durability from this x ultra as well. Even though the new one is made in India I have had no problem with the boots so far. Quality is quite good and surprisingly the comfort level was very high from the very beginning compared to the Solaris which needed some break-in time. (probably I picked a perfect size this time) I’m doing this review after a four days trip in High Tatra mountains in Slovakia.
I used the boot only on 3 days out of 4 because on the first day it was completely soaked because of 2x short heavy rain (from the direction of my legs through the socks. This is not the fault of the boot). I walked back to the car in a “pool” (2-3km) but the boots were survived. On the first day, before the mentioned rain, I was able to use the boots in shallow rivers (on wet rocks) and on wet rooty/muddy paths without any problems.
One day later when it had dried I done trips on the 3rd and 4th days to mountains with the altitude of 2300 and 2450m (1000m up and down x2). The paths were rooty and rocky with small medium and large sizes of rocks. The were very steep sections on both trips. On the fourth day there was a little rain downwards but not soaked the path completely. There was no mud.
Overall summary:
Pros:
– Comfort level high. Not too tight not too loose.
– Very very light I feel almost no weight on my feet.
– Very good control over the boots (even when slip on gravel or wet rocks/roots). A bit better than the Solaris probably because of the new tread patterns.
– The tread and Ortholite foam saved my feet from sharp edges or rocks. I think this is almost the same like it was in my Solaris nothing special.
– The sides of the boots are a little bit more protective than the Solaris’ (Synthetic compared to texture and leather on Solaris)
– Water proofing is the same as the old Solaris I think but I have to say I have not too much exp yet because when it was rained I did not use the boot with enough protection from the above and last day there was not enough rain to test. I think it is protective enough from the water on the ground if the water level does not pass the gtx texture level of the boots.
Cons:
– Hot on summer time thanks to the GTX. I don’t blame Salomon for this. This was true for Solaris as well. This is the price of the waterproofness which is more important for me. If you really don’t like to sweat in boots then try to choose something not GTX instead or avoid places where the temp is above 30degrees.
The circular shaped shoelaces wants still to be loosen but it is probably my fault because Solaris’ has non circular shaped and it was loosen after a while too. (I really don’t understand the concept of the circular shaped shoelaces by the way. This geometry is simply not good for durable knots. More thickness needs more power to tighten enough) The shoelace surface seems more durable than Solaris’.
– I experienced some ankle twists occasionally, which could be dangerous for the ankles, especially when I’m tired on downhill sections but this is a mid size boot so I would not expect more. This was the case for Solaris as well. I completely satisfied with the support that the boots give to the ankles.
– Small rocks or gravel can get into the boots from above. It seems a little bit better than Solaris from this perspective.
Hope it can help you to pick the right one (like other people helped me as well)
Here are some advice:
– Always pick the proper size.
– This is universal boots but not good for everything. Be sure in that it will fit your plan in the nature.
– I’m not a try them all guy. I have no experience with other big brands there might be brands with better boots maybe on the same price. My decision based on many other peoples’ review and my previous experience with my Solaris.
Buon divertimento.
Really comfortable waterproof and very good grip. Ideal hiking boot.
Easy to slip on and off… Doesn’t require double knots etc as pretty secure.
These were comfortable from the first time putting them on. It took a few attempts to get used to the lacing system and making sure the shoes were on correctly with the right amounts of support and pressure around the ankle. After that they have been brilliant. My feet have been comfortable, warm and dry at all times. They are also easy to clean and maintain. Looking forward to many more miles in them.
These are exactly what I needed I use them for Airsoft. Very comfortable and robust.
I’m an in-betweener (is that a word?) with some manufactures I’m a 10 and others I’m a 9.5.
It turns out with Salomon I’m a 10, these fit snugly but are a tad tight in the width. So considering in the summer months my feet may well swell I feel I may have a problem, hopefully they do a wide fitting?
The sole plate isn’t very wide compared to say Berghaus and Merrell, will this cause issues on the rocks.. time will tell
That said these are extremely lightweight and are very comfortable. They also look very modern and unlike your normal walking boot.
Price is reasonably competitive too.
Perfect comfortable water tight , 12 hours on feet no problem wi these bad boys x
This are great pair of boots. They are very well made and you can see they are good quality material and they are made to last. They stay well in my feet and they are comfortable.I got them for long walks and they are very good and your foots doesn’t get tired.
Quite snug on width but comfortable and look good. I’m a bit worried about other reviews mentioning manufacturing qualitybut do far so good
The Salomon ‘X Ultra Pioneer’ mid-height hiking boots are sturdy, hold the foot very securely, and provide plenty of grip. The waterproofing properties of the boots are excellent thanks to the Gortex.
The sole is shaped to provide comfort when walking as well as good grip and I have found this to be very effective. These are definitely the most highly engineered boots that I have had but I do question whether any boots can be valued at 150.
I like the protective toe-caps and cushioned sides of the boots. The stitching is very good throughout the boots – the hooks for the laces are particularly secure.
Overall the boots are excellent, and made to the highest standards. If you do a lot of walking on rough terrain then it’s easy to justify the high asking price, but not so easy for the occassional user.
Got these for one of my sons. They look great and my son says that they are like walking in slippers but would have preferred just that little bit more room with half a size bigger, he does normally get an 11, which these were.
There is a pattern on the front and good grip on the soles. Highly recommend
These are a quality and comfortable pair of walking boots from a reputable brand. You know you’re going to get quality boots with this brand. For the price, albeit on the higher side of things, these are a well deserved 5* that I’d be happy to buy multiple pairs of – they’re that good.
Sizing for these boots is spot on – I bought my size and they fit as expected, good comfortable fit that isn’t too tight or long/short. As a little tip – buy a half size larger if you can than your normal size – this will allow for thicker walking socks.
Design wise – they look decent and certainly look and feel like a quality pair of walking boots when you hold them and look at them. They’re not overly heavy and fit comfortably on my feet with no issues.
I’ve used these for a few weeks now – going on many walks over various terrain and I can say that I am very impressed. Usually with a new pair of shoes or boots you get blisters or aches – with these boots I’ve had nothing of the sort. They’re extremely comfortable with no sign of any foot pain.
Walking over various terrain – rocks, steep climbs, slippery paths etc, these boots handle it all without any issues. They grip well and you feel secure in your footing. All the while feeling very comfortable.
I’ve found my feet and body well supported whilst wearing these boots. Quite frankly they’re incredible.
These are an easy 5*. Price is great, sizing is great, walking and handling terrain is great and they maintain comfort throughout all of this. I’d recommend these to anyone, they’re that good.
I’ve had salomon running shoes before and quite frankly didn’t got on with them. Suffice to say some brands just fit me better than others.
Normally I’m a size ten and this is pretty standard. The only one offered to me in these walking shoes was a 10.5 though so I thought I’d give the brand a second go.
The finish is good. The insole is memory foam based by the feels of it and there for quite comfy. A good basic colour to go with any colour gear.
They are quite narrow considering the bigger size. I know that walking shoes are meant to be quite fitted but this caused a few blisters.
Not worth the current RRP….hopefully they get better after being worn in a little.
Really comfortable to walk in, with good support around the ankle area.
The sole has great grip, especially in wet or muddy areas.
Waterproof so suitable for all weathers.
The laces secure right to the top of the shoe to ensure your feet feel very stable.
The extra protection on the toe area is particularly useful in rocky areas.
Hope you found my review helpful
I’ve just reviewed a pair of Salomons size 9, identical to these except that they were shoes rather than “mid”, i.e ankle-level, boots like these. The shoes were on the small side, but as far as I can tell these boots are correctly sized. They seemed to be the same size as a pair of my wife’s 7 shoes, though she has a wide foot and couldn’t get these on comfortably. Probably, then, OK for size but best avoided if you need a wide fitting.
I foundt the shoes very comfortable, so as these boots are a variation on the same design I am confident that they are comfortable too. Thye have well-moulded padding around the inside of the ankle to prevent chafing and Ortholite insoles for cushioning your feet (the insoles can be removed if you eventually need to replace them). The inside is lined with a mesh which I assume is breathable. The quality of materials and manufacture feel excellent, with soles made of very tough rubber. The design of the treads and the V-shaped pattern of the heel tread should provide plenty of grip in muddy conditions. As usual these days, the outside of the tip of the toes is solid rubber to protect against impact.
The boots are tough enough for any outdoor wear, but also stylish enough for everyday wear, and very light in weight.
Not cheap, but about the right price for hiking boots of this quality.
I got my Dad to test these for me, and so far he is loving them!.
Veery comfortable and although he is a wide fitting usually hes found these very comfy and not at all narrow, although i did choose half a size up he said he could have gotten away with his own size so would recommend ordering correct size as apposed to ordering-up.
The fact they come up the ankle feels much more supportive, and my Dad can be on his felt all day for around 10 hours so i am very happy with the initial first few days of wear and would very much recommend.
Very impressed with the style, Luke and tread of the boots
I really like the look of the boots, nice colour scheme and love how the tongue is completely joined to the boot so once you do the shoelace up do you have a sealed foot brilliant
I like the feel underfoot nice and soft, and you have a little archway you need it to support your soul of your foot and the heel feels very supported however, on the right heel inside there is a little overlap of fabric which if I don’t have the boot nice and tight does rub my heel little disappointed with that finishing.
I am very impressed with the soles of the boots, very deep and I’m really nice and I like the length of the laces, not too long, just about right.
I really enjoy wearing the boots. They are really light and very forgiving when walking very happy.
With a price point being 150 I was expecting a bit more of a fine finish so I am a little disappointed in the quality, especially the right internal heel however, they are very comfortable very light and look good
I am not completely satisfied with these shoes because I ordered 9 and It came 8, I tried to put them on and they are just right but unfortunately I will not go up in such shoes that fit my foot perfectly, because the shoes should be a bit larger, I have a device to stretch the shoes and I hope that it will help but rather with such a very good quality material it is unlikely and I will have to give them as a gift to my brother, on whom they will surely fit and he will be very happy. So I really do not regret this acquisition because they are really good shoes, quality, very comfortable for walking in the mountains, I know it all because I already had similar ones and I was very happy with them.
Of course I can recommend these shoes to anyone who likes to walk a lot because they are one of the best to do it.
They are very expensive but for this quality shoes it is reasonable price.
I have worn these Salomon mid hiking boots over a few days and so far they have exceeded expectation. The sizing is correct for me. Waterproofing is excellent no water got in when out in the wet. I found the materials strong and abrasion resistant and the boots were comfortable out of the box. Recommended.
I’ve had a few pairs of Salomons so was keen to try these, I wasn’t disappointed. I ordered a half size larger as I plan to use these for winter and wanted to wear thicker socks, that was a good choice. They fit me perfectly, the tongue opens up wide when the top row of lace is removed from the lugs so it’s easy to get your foot into these, they tie nice and secure and don’t move around on my feet. Once on they feel snug and warm, do a good job keeping my feet dry on the wet days. They look really god and the soles are very grippy on all surfaces I’ve walked on from wooden floors to loose gravel and mud, the sole offers a good level of protection against stones and objects so perfect for hiking. At 130 at time of writing this review I’d say that’s very good value and well worth it. I’ve paid more for some of my other goretex thinking shoes and the quality isn’t as good as this.
I ordered this pair of walking boots for my husband. He is a size 11 and this pair fits perfectly and comfortably. The soles feels soft and bouncy and they are not heavy as well. Thumbs up for these boots and my husband highly recommends.
