Can have wire shelving on 2 choices of height. I used neither and chose to remove wire shelving altogether (as personally dont like) and instead rigged up own wooden ledges, platforms, wooden ladders, sand bath and added a large wheel.
Now have lovely cage with plenty of room for digging and burrowing and also room to add boxes for the gerbils to chomp and play with. There is plenty of scope for adding wooden ledges, bridging and other enrichment. The bit i like most about cage is the large opening for ease of access.
Liked cage so much ordered a 2nd for our other pair gerbils.
Brought this for My grand daughter Amelia’s three gerbils, she is very happy with it, nice size & value for money. Would definitely recommend this for Gerbils.
Gonna add more and more enrichment also.
Only negative and why I gave it 4 stars is because there were a few cracks in the rim of the plastic cage bottom and some of the wires on top of the cage were bent, however it seemed too much hastle to return just for such a minor thing, so don’t let that put you off buying it!
Don’t think the hamster liked it cause he fell and died
My gerbils love this cage! I would recommend 3 or 4 in this cage. I used to have 3 gerbils, but unfortunately 1 died recently so now I’ve got an extra large gerbil cage now. It has lasted a very long time because my gerbils love to chew a lot and I was surprised that it’s still perfect! I didn’t order it though, I got it from my local pet store so I can’t tell you how long it took to arrive.
I recommend it for 4 or less gerbils!
Good size and depth. Didn’t use orange platform though due to risk of damaging gerbils feet. Husband made up some wooden platforms at varying heights. Have toilet roll connecting platforms
Hamster loves it, there’s enough space in the lower section to provide a lot of substrate for him to tunnel around in.
However, I must advise to anyone who buys this cage to weave cardboard or even lino into the bars of the orange platform, as it can be very dangerous for small animals with legs that can fit through the bars as they can and potentially will get stuck.
Overall, the cage is a really good quality cage with plenty of room and lots of space. A great buy 🙂
I have two happy gerbils. I didn’t realise that the tubes, bottle and food bowl would come too! so that was pleasantly surprising. The cage is a very good size for my two gerbils. The only problem is i don’t like having wire platforms, so i’m going to eventually replace them with a safer material. The bottle also leaked but i can’t complain about that, as we still got it with the cage. The bowl is very good and my gerbils love the tubes. Would recommend
EDIT: since I made this review over a year ago, I have become much more educated on gerbils needs. I do not think this cage is big enough anymore and I purchased a very large tank for them to go in instead.
What I said about the quality still stands though, I had no problems with it breaking or anything.
Got this for my absolutely massive Syrian hamster, other cages I looked at either had too big bar spacing, or looked too small for him. This has plenty of room and he looks like he is loving it. I did attach some cut up pieces of towel onto the orange second level platform with velcro because I was worried he would get his feet stuck in the bar gaps after reading some other reviews, I’d rather be safe than sorry. The cage door is very secure, no way of him opening it and escaping. Accessories that come with the cage are nice, food bowl and water bottle that clip securely to the cage, and a tunnel too. I managed to fit a 12 inch wheel into the cage, and a smaller 8 inch one next to it – this was my main issue when looking for cages, my hamster LOVES his wheel but I could never get a big enough one to fit in his previous cages, both these size wheels do fit though and I left them both in so that he can pick which one he is most comfortable with. My friend jokes that he is a God-King hamster because he is so spoilt with this new cage setup!
This is great for my 2 gerbils. I would not suggest the smaller one. There is good space for them to burrow and they’re happy.
ALTERATIONS: as mentioned in comments before, the wire level including the ladder is NOT good for gerbil feet, my babies hated it before I made changes and would not go upstairs unless they were hungry/thirsty. I bought the chill and chew mats from amazon (you can search for small pet mats) and covered the wires (yes they do chew on these and need to be replaced every now and then but overall is good for the health of gerbils and their feet!). 2 of these are enough to cover the wire, you will need to trim them down. I also replaced the ladder with a wooden one. My little boys are very happy now and will go to the top level lots more than they did before.
Please make this alteration if you want your gerbils to be healthy!
The play tunnel is a bit useless as it it plastic, and has to be replaced with one with a metal edge protector to keep it from being chewed up. Otherwise, this has been an ideal habitat.
I have 11 gerbils and three cages. This cage houses our girls and they are so happy in here. I had the smaller version at first and this is miles better than that. My smaller cage has now been adapted with a third level to accommodate some boy gerbils so they are happy too. My other cage is an omlet and although a beautiful looking piece of furniture, this cage is way roomier than it looks in the picture and the front opens right up so great for communicating with your gerbil friends. If you like having lots of contact with your gerbils and vice versa def the best cage around.
Note: Try not to use the metal bars for your rodent to run on as it will hurt their feet, you can get some wooden bridges or even a chunk of fallen branch from woods (and beside that, you will know they have something to grind their teeth on).
My gerbil little angel loves this tank it’s very large and she has lots of space too move around its perfect for her this is the second gerbil tank of the same kind that I have gotten from amazon very pleased worth this very large gerbil tank
Before I put my mice in the cage, I had to fix that wire floor. Wire flooring is very harmful to your pet, it is uncomfortable or them to stand on (a friend of mine who had the smaller version of this cage told me it was alright because they ‘didn’t spend much time at the top of the cage’- well of COURSE they don’t, that’s because it’s fricken WIRE!) and they can slip on the wire and hurt their legs if they panic and start struggling. I can’t stress enough how horrible wire floors are for small rodents. Unfortunately this is the only reasonably priced burrowing tank I could find.
To fix the wire floor problem (grr) I cut out squares of cardboard to fit, snipped little taps out from them and folded the tabs under and around the wire to hold it in place. I am aware this is only a temporary solution but it seems to be working a treat right now. The mice have not chewed or pee’d on it yet, and their faeces and food mess are very easy to brush off into a bin when you want to clean it. I’d recommend to anyone buying this product to cover the wire in some way for your pets sake.
The food-bowl and tunnel that comes with the cage are both good, solid items which I cannot fault. You can hang the bowl on the cage (which I personally like as it gives my pets a little something extra to climb on) or just use it as a normal dish and set it on the floor. The tunnel can also be used as a ladder of sorts if you like, too.
However, the water bottle that comes with the cage is leaky, so I have replaced it with a better (and bigger, as the bottle that comes with this cage is only 150ml) although the way it attaches to the cage is much easier than having to use wires to keep the bottle up.
The front and back of the wire cage part have horizontal bars on, which is useful for attaching wheels, water bottles, food dishes, hanging toys, and is good for rodents that enjoy climbing around etc. etc., although the sides have vertical bars which are entirely useless… I wish I’d noticed that small detail in the picture before getting the tank so I didn’t buy so many toys that need hanging bars to function. Right now, there is nothing hanging from the cage-sides as vertical bars are really quite unfriendly for it.
The door at the top of the cage is quite large. If you can a large cage door then it is really quite useful. You can push it back and there it will stay to let you put a hand (or both if you like, maybe you can fit your head in too if you are a small person) in without having to worry about the door waggling around. Although the layout of my cage (I put the second floor right up against the front of the cage so the mice can go up to the door themselves if they like) means that the door is in an odd position if you want to reach to the tank below. I think a ‘top door’ on the roof of the cage with smaller side-doors would have been a better set up… but oh well.
You might want to note with this cage that the sloping sides on the tank make the bottom floor-area smaller than the dimensions would have you believe. The rounded corners do mean you lose quite a bit of space. I also have my tank on ‘backwards’ since for whatever reason the designer of this Gerbilarium laser engraved… urr… something or other involving trees into the tank. You can’t observe your pets with this design in the way, so why it’s there are all is baffling.
However, despite this, you can still fit in a lot of floor substrate (in my case, care-fresh) for your animals to burrow around in… which is of course the reason I got this type of cage instead of the more traditional ones I’m used to. My mice really love to move around under their bedding, and barely bother to walk around on the surface of it. They can’t really make tunnels with my choice of bedding, but I’m sure with a different type… perhaps sterilised soil, they could make a network of tunnels within the tank. I’ve got to try that sometime.
Overall, it’s quite a nice large tank for my mice, and I presume for gerbils, too. Although I can’t really agree with someone putting a fully grown syrian hamster in there due to how narrow the cage is (especially taking into account that the dimensions for the floor-space are smaller than advertised). All in all, it does the job, I like to think my mice are happy in their new cage and providing you sort out the wire flooring it can be a good place for a few little rodents to call home.
