Use this to back up my laptop. A simple plug in and it’s good to go. Easy to use and easy to navigate for technologically naive people like myself. Can definitely recommend!
I have it since couples of years, it is resistant, so that’s perfect.
+ reliable.
+ good quality / price.
– make a little noise, but that’s fine.
I have 4 of these now, best storage capacity per pound I’ve found without having to use an enclosure. I power them on and off fairly regularly for video archival purposes, the oldest being 3 years old and so far, they haven’t failed me.
An addition to an existing set of drives of which two were very close to capacity and likely to fill within a week or two. As the contents of the set was alphabetized, this allowed about 30% from each of the two – the latter portion from one and the earlier from the second to be transferred to this, almost levelling the three to within a few tens of Gb.
Several others from the series are currently used up to and including 14TB units as were several that are now spare and with individual capacities of up to 6TB.
First of I have to say it works so much better than I thought it would, insane storage space and give a little boost to performance on some of my games, not quite as portable as I thought since it requires plugging in and not off the laptops power (though doesn’t bother me) currently got it hooked up to my ps4… yay more games. Not a fan of the transfer cable tho since its a little bit if a loose fit tho on level footing it seems not to be affected. Overall I’m really happy and satisfied
I had no problem with this 8TB External Storage, works straight out the box, what you must not do like with any harddrive is knock it or drop on the floor because then you run the risk of a none working hardrive, they are sensitive.
I purchased two 8TB Seagate hard drives and they are both fantastic. Sorry to read so many people had problems with these drives. If I have a problem in the future, I will update this review with a full report. But, for now, the 8TB Seagate hard drives are super and make a wise investment.
A little tip for you. No matter how reliable a hard drive is, and, no matter other people’s positive experience, one cannot guarantee the retention of data. Mechanical failures do and will happen at some point. Thus, if your data does not exist in two separate places, your data does not exist at all. Even if corrupted data does not cause loss of data, a theft or a fire would also render your data useless.
I have been a fan of Seagate hard drives for over two decades. And, as a result, I have purchased similar hard drives in the past. More than a dozen. I have been fortunate enough never to experience hard drive failures with this brand.
Despite my luck and considering the aforementioned, I purchased a couple of drives. One to keep on site and one to keep off site.
The Good
+ The drives are whisper quiet. This is important to me. I find the crunching, grinding and popping of some modern drives annoying and unnecessary. If you like quiet operations, be confident that the drive works almost silently, even under load.
+ Transfer speeds read/write are on average between 150 MBps and 200MBps. I use USB 3.0 and achieved these speeds through a lot of trial and error. I have a couple of PCI cards, and noted that if I had drives connected to one PCI card, it would reduce the transfer speeds by half. This issue is most likely related to power. Thus, I opted to use two PCI cards for each hard drive.
The Bad
– While purchasing an 8TB, you only get a reported 7.2TB. This is because hard drive manufacturers use the accurate description of the terms. The prefix giga, for instance, means a power of 1000. Whereas the correct term for powers of 1024 is gibibyte, though it isn’t often used. Computers, in-particular Windows, has always calculated hard drives as powers of 1024. While hard drive manufacturers use powers of 1000.
– On previous models, and possibly other models less than 8TB, there was a physical power switch at the back of the drive. This allowed easy power down, to give the drive a break or put into an idle/archive status without wear. That physical button is no longer present. This results in you either having to turn the drive off at the mains or to disconnect the power cord.
Despite these points, the good outweighs the bad. The value is remarkable. And, the drive comes with a 2 year warranty, which seems reasonable. But, as an added precaution, I also purchased an extended 3 year warranty in case failure occurs.
I hope you found my review useful and that it helped you make an informed buying decision.
Very little ventilation in the enclosure..shame as they are a bargain otherwise.
very good and at a very good price buy i
Found a video online that showed me how to get the case off, and it was super easy. Should have bought two because they have gone up in price. It’s an smr drive, so probably best to avoid if you are writing and re-writing to it alot, but for my needs it’s fine.
Bought this as i underestimated how much storage i needed on the PC i built, went for this as i think 8TB will be plenty, Was easy to install, has to be plugged in mains and a USB, I generally always keep it plugged in so items cant be transferred without having to plug anything in, its not too large but is bigger than a thumb drive obviously, is maybe 8 inches long and maybe 2 inches high, all in all it was a good buy and something i use daily
Everything is as expected for this external HDD and is one of the fastest of its kind in reading and writing speeds. The only downside I could find is its packaging which was all in all the Amazon carton box that was delivered to me.
Also the delivery time was very short!
The drive and enclosure it’s in have worked well for me. I store my photography collection on it so am not fussed about read/ write speeds.
The drive gets written to daily and no hiccups or problems.
If you want cheap storage that works great then I can recommend this drive.
Excellent drive, used as an external drive for a Mede8er media player. Works straight away out of the box in 8TB, NTFS mode to store a mass of films and TV on the drive. Drive is easily fast enough.
I run a number of business and have used Seagate drives in ‘internal’, ‘external’ and in several NAS environments over the past 20+ years without any issues and I find them very reliable. This is a nice unit supplied with a good PSU and USB lead. Excellent value.
At less than 120, this is an excellent deal for a very good drive. The drive inside the enclosure is a Barracuda Green. I removed the drive from the enclosure and added it to a NAS system, where it is working well alongside other Barracuda drives.
So far so good! PS4 recognised the device and allowed it to be formatted as extended storage. Only seems to give you 7.35TB useable space but that’s far more than the 500GB internal drive.
I liked that it got delivered really quickly and that it worked as expected. It was fairly priced and a lot cheaper than any similar 8 TB out there. Will be doing most of my shopping on Amazon from now on.
I was a bit skeptical about ordering this for my ps4 because I’d seen some people say it didn’t work on the ps4 and others saying it did.
But I took it out of the box and connected it all up and absolutely no issues registered the storage device with ease and no issues at all.
Big memory for lots of games so I no longer have to delete some to install others.
Over all very happy with my purchase great product and would definitely reccomend.
Just received my new external drive. Will do a full review once I have used it for a while.
Worth noting that from new it is showing 7.27 TB free. So the something is using up 0.73 TB before I have loaded anything. That seems a lot ???
The drive itself has been very good, fast as expected. It does have a tendency to power down very quickly, so it can be a bit of a pain waiting for it to spin up again if working directly off the drive (as I do when on the laptop), but that’s a minimal complaint. My only real caveat is the case design, which has very sharp edges and superpointy corners I’ve actually cut myself on when moving the drive. Not a reason not to buy it, but it does make the drive actually unpleasant to handle.
Have always liked Seagate products this is no exception. A well designed drive with no frills. The size (8TB) was the main thing with durability my next concern, this drive fitted both. I formatted it to an NTFS (GPT) and put Acronis 2021 onto it. It now backs-up fast and gives me the reassurance that I require (games and win10 backup + all my music). One thing did puzzle me, the drive spins all the time at varying speeds, phoned Seagate they stated that “this was normal, spin up, spin down” and will not invalidate my warranty. Good drive good price.
What do you need to say? It’s got everything you need , it’s fast, it’s quite and it updated my PS4 from 1TB to 9TB in about 2mins. ( Formatting) Just plug, format it from settings and you are ready to go. If only I could do the same to my actual memory
The drive arrived in a plainish cardboard box with the minimum of additional items. It was very easy to set up. Of course what I don’t know is how long it will last. So far; it does exactly what I was expecting.
like most drives you loose abit of space to partitioning, but 80GB seems abit excessive, you dont receive an 8TB hardrive… you receive a 7.27TB, wish i knew this before purchase as i probably would have gone with another product instead.
Like others when I first got this drive I was getting very slow speeds such as 40MBs read and 40MBs write. I had put the drive into what I thought was USB3 (windows tool even reported it) but turns out the port was actually running at 2.0.
Switched it to a good 3.0 port and now get 180MBs read and 120MBs write. Plenty fast considering the price.
Time will tell how reliable it is but don’t let the bad reviews talking about slow speeds put you off.
Bought this when it was on offer 104, after checking the dive for bad sectors and reliability I pulled the enclosure apart and put the HDD directly into my server with SATA connectors, its been running 24/7 in my PLEX server and I have had no issues.
This drive is a Shingled drive so check for compatibility if running raid.
I need to buy another so if you lower the price back to what it was 12 months ago ill buy another.
Not sure why Amazon asks for a “Warmth” rating… But 5 stars as is hasn’t overheated i guess…
I had two PS4’s both with 2tb drives which were full. I got this to put all my games in one place so I could sell one console. Now I have lots of space and don’t have to keep deleting stuff to make room for downloads or updates. Easy to set up and transfer files
This is a SMR drive inside.
Drive is ST8000DM004-SCX188 -> 8Tb drive.
The drive is a 5400 RPM speed but does not really effect the read speeds.
The drive runs cool and windows 10 can spin it down if not in use.
It does what it’s ment to do store files images music and videos. Easy to partition using Windows 10. And yes it stores a lot of data. Would have liked a longer USB cable to at least match the power adapter but hey it was easy to sort. Take it out of the packet plug it in and away you go it’s so simple even the wife can use it.
I ordered this Drive in the UK. even though everything else is fine with it. it came with a european plug and not a Duke plug mea ing you will need and adapter. it feels a bit short sighted. and was slightly irritating. though an easy fix both for the manufacturer and distributor and at home, it is irritating.
High speed cable only worked once. Now will only be recognised in USB 2.0 port
Unless both of my ssUSB ports have failed but they seem to work with USB 2.0 devices
UPDATE.
Replaced cable with an Amazon basics cable and all is well.
was being used for the PS4 but due to their ext. limitations on playstation of a 2tb internal and a 8tb external. i cant go any higher so i have moved it to the PC where i can install far more games and much more storage than the ps4. my game library has surpassed sony’s expectations and i require more than 10tb for ps5. but im not upgrading my console to ps5 as i have now migrated to pc gaming.
This is an excellent item spoilt by having a power supply with clip on plug pins for every power system in the world. Infact two of them were duplicated. It even had a clip on lid to protect the fitting where these fittings went. We are told to cut down on waste yet here is a manufacturer contributing to waste as I had no use for any of these apart from the UK version so they had to go in the bin (recycling) as I am never going to use them.
Can’t review the 8tb I have just taken delivery of yet but I’ve had a 5 and 4tb connectected to my one x and pro for 2 years nearly no problem with either of them. Portable drives are designed for constant plugging and removing they have rugged cases and damping for the heads they tend to be 2tb or less ; these drives are designed to be static warehouses as for the speed jeez get a small ssd and put your current most used files on there. Man from the future says slow write speeds but read is good so gaming is OK but some productivity stuff may not be.
Bought this as a back up box, and it does the job well. It’s a decent size and quite fast, great storage for the price. The only downside is that it uses mains power, rather than USB, but it clearly states this in the description so it wasn’t a surprise. Happy with this unit.
** UPDATE NOV 2020 **
After 15 months of ownership and fewer than 30 power-on cycles, the drive began producing errors:
05 000000000008 Reallocated Sectors Count
BB 000000000033 Reported Uncorrectable Errors
C5 000000000010 Current Pending Sector Count
C6 000000000010 Uncorrectable Sector Count
I immediately ran SeaTools (several times, with computer reboots in between) but it failed on all occasions:
SeaTools Test Code: E1D36CEE
SMART – Started 14/10/2020 20:53:35
SMART – Pass 14/10/2020 20:53:41
Short DST – Started 14/10/2020 21:29:56
Short DST – FAIL 14/10/2020 21:30:09
Fix All Long – Started 14/10/2020 21:31:04
Fix All Long – Started 14/10/2020 22:11:36
Fix All Long – FAIL 15/10/2020 13:36:47
FAIL
So I initiated an Amazon return as the drive is still under warranty. Whilst moving its contents to a different drive, only one file failed to copy. Again, hugely long process. When the drive was finally erased (files deleted – not formatted, as I understand this might clear SMART errors) it was still showing errors. A few days later, before shipping, thought I should copy the drive serial number to see whether the repair process would result in a replacement or repair. Opened up Crystal Disk Info, and to my amazement, no more errors, the drive showing as good:
05 100 100 _10 000000000000 Reallocated Sectors Count
BB _49 _49 __0 000000000033 Reported Uncorrectable Errors
C5 100 100 __0 000000000000 Current Pending Sector Count
C6 100 100 __0 000000000000 Uncorrectable Sector Count
Concerned, I contacted Seagate by phone. They told me this wasn’t normal and they would replace the drive immediately provided SeaTools failed the Long Generic test. So I ran both short DST and long generic, and both passed!
SeaTools Test Code: E1D36CEE
SMART – Started 28/10/2020 11:07:46
SMART – Pass 28/10/2020 11:07:52
Short DST – Started 28/10/2020 11:27:46
Short DST – Pass 28/10/2020 11:28:55
Long Generic – Started 28/10/2020 11:29:06
Long Generic – Pass 29/10/2020 07:31:07
I concluded there was no point in returning the drive if it is no longer reporting errors: I’ll just be sending it to a repair shop only for it to be sent back with a clean bill of health. It hasn’t given me any problems for the last month. I’ve copied the 5TB of files back onto it, without any issues. As I paid for the 3 year recovery plan when purchasing the drive, I’m now just crossing my fingers. This does not inspire huge amounts of confidence, but I also understand some errors can occur when dealing with such large amounts of data.
I will keep you posted if things change. Rating it down from 5 star to 4 stars.
** ORIGINAL REVIEW **
Received this drive today, thought I would provide some speed test results whilst I’m running SeaTools in the background, a long test which will take just under 20 hours for this 8TB drive!
Background
I was looking to backup almost 4TB of photos from my NAS which is running out of space and needs an upgrade soon. I’m a hobbyist photographer fed up burning archival blurays in chunks of 25Gb and then having to use an outdated tool (Octopus DVD indexer) to catalogue which files are on which disks. I have a spindle stacked with almost 100 blu-ray disks; retrieving a RAW file from an older disk is a real pain in the bum!
So it was time to invest in a 8TB drive to backup all my data, which I could then place in a fireproof safe. I was very hesitant to get a SMR type drive as I’ve heard so much about their slow writing speeds. I was debating for several weeks whether or not to go for this drive given the price, or a bare Barracuda Pro drive which I could hot-plug into my computer. Yesterday, as I was browsing amazon, the price of this external drive dropped 25%. So without hesitation, I bought it. This is the cheapest 8TB you can get today!
— Out of the box —
The first thing I checked were seek errors and rewritten sectors using Crystal Disk Info. Then ran some DST tests using SeaTools. The drive passed with flying colours (please note that with Seagate drives, Crystal Disk Info appears to report errors, in fact you only need to be concerned with the first 4 digits (on the left) of the RAW results and not the last 8 (on the right) which are hexadecimal values of how many times a drive was accessed. You can read this up online.
— Speed tests —
I initially plugged the drive into a USB 2.0 port and realised this as soon as I ran Crystal Disk Mark which was reporting transfer speeds of 42 MB/s. My ASUS A87-A motherboard has dedicated USB 3.0 ports so I immediately relocated the connection.
First test, straight out of the box, gave me sequential 184.5 MB/s read and 142.5 MB/s write.
I then read this thing about my motherboard having USB 3.0 boost, so tried it out (after installing older win 8.1 drivers) and sure enough, performance jumped to 210.8 read and 204.8 write. But, any queued and threaded tests were halved – which are more realistic tests given that I will be transferring hundreds of thousands of smaller files. So I uninstalled all the turbo boost (also probably one of the reasons they never produced drivers for windows 10).
I then tested standard windows file transfers from my SSD to the Seagate. Writing a large 3Gb file from SSD to Seagate gave me 176 MB/s. Reading the large file produced 184 MB/s.
I then transferred 10Gb of smaller files (realistic example) and this gave me 108 MB/s SSD to Seagate, and 176 MB/s back from Seagate to SSD (note that with USB 3.0 Boost (a feature of my Asus mobo) these file transfers dropped to around 70 MB/s).
Now that might not be super speedy, but given that I need to backup files from my 2 bay NAS which has no space for a third drive, and only has USB 2.0, the max speed I will ever get is over 1Gbe network from NAS > PC > Seagate and that will be 105MB/s max. So the Seagate write speed of 108 MB/s is sufficient for the task. And given that it performed so well reading files at 184 MB/s, this drive is as ideal for my purpose!
— 3 year recovery option —
To top this off, I followed the link to the registration page (link is on the Seagate drive) and I was taken to a page offering me a 3 year data recovery plan – should the drive stop working – for 14.99 USD (or 12.31) ! That’s peanuts compared to what prices I’ve seen quoted in the past. This was a real cherry on the top and without hesitation I purchased the 3 year plan.
— Summary —
All in all, this is a fantastic piece of kit (for the price) and would highly recommend as a secondary backup option (to a NAS) for photographers and videographers. I’ve attached screenshots of all the relevant speed tests.
1st drive was DOA and had to be returned, 2nd one was sent and arrived the next day. All seams to be OK, having read mixed reviews i am not sure how long it will last But i need to get the data off the machine
I bought this to back-up a home server. It came formatted in NTFS ready for use with Windows but it is also ready for use with other operating systems as well such as OS X and Linux. I connected it via the USB cable provided to a USB 3 port and mounted it in Linux where I proceeded to copy data to it. Unbelievably it only took around 5.5 hours to transfer almost 2TB of data onto it. I ran some tests in Windows afterwards and got some mixed results which seem to show that the drive is significantly faster at reading than it is at writing however since the speeds at which I was transferring data to the drive at surpassed that of the tests I can only assume that some caching happens in the process and that it varies a lot in speed depending on the size of the files being transferred to it. Overall I was extremely impressed with the drive’s performance.
Tech-talk aside, it is aesthetically pleasing with sharp edges and is relatively small in size despite being a desktop drive. It has air holes for ventilation on 4 of the 6 sides and is not the quietest drive but equally not particularly loud either. I’ve had it running for 48hours straight and it runs at around 40 degrees C. It has a small white LED in the top which comes on solid when connected to a computer. The power cable comes with detachable ends to suit different regions’ power outlets which I thought was a nice touch. Also, the USB cable provided appears to be about 1.5m in length which has been handy when getting behind machines to plug it in. My particular drive came in an OEM style box which was secure enough and it showed it had been manufactured in November 2018 which is good to know. At this point I can’t comment on the reliability of the drive but so long as it can continue to take and restore backups when required at fast speeds I’ll be happy.
I bought 4 of these… 2 to store stuff, and two more to act as back-ups (if you’re going to store upto 8TB of data, you really need to back it up in case the disk fails and all disks will one day fail as they have moving parts)…
I store all my family photos and family videos etc. in RAW formats, not jpeg so one photo can easily be 100MB or more, and 4K family videos are usually several Gigabytes big, so I need the storage, and that means two drives, to upgrade from the dozen or so smaller drives I presently use!
I ripped open two of the cases, and placed them inside my PC case, and they work great. Formatted to 64k per sector and the first drive took about 12 hours or so each to fill when attached via SATA cable, but flippin heck gov’nor it was worth it… The second drive only has about 1TB on it at the moment, that filled in less than 2 hours…
The first back up to the 2 back-up disks via USB 3, took about twice as long as it did when the drives are connected inside the PC via SATA, but it was still relatively fast, and all done by the time I got home from shopping…
I now have years worth of storage, and a great back-up solution. Great drives!
I was more than happy when I found out that this hard drive really works with my new Playstation Pro. Now there is room for many games (Playstation Plus games, all the downloaded games & my physical game collection) and the price of the item was not too expensive. I will order later on another hard drive of this size for my another Playstation if the price don’t get higher than 160 . You cannot find this kind of item here in Finland very easily at all and if you will find it will cost more than 200 ! Thanks a lot and have a great year 2019!
This is the size of Hard Drive I’ve always wanted.. it’s had all the pies and you would expect it to be big and all slouchy leaning against the PC .. but instead it’s light, firmly built and about the size of a paperback.. it’s actually smaller than my 4TB Western Digital I bought some time back. It’s so quiet, I became concerned that it had collapsed under its own humungeosness.. but a tiny discreet flashing light reassured me it was wanting to be fed some data. It’s already half full of 4 years of MKV film files so I recon I can keep feeding it for a few more. At this price it was great value and even came with free software to perform backups and mirror files from the PC or Mac.
Ordered this yesterday as a way of shifting a few TB of rarely accessed data from my recently upgraded main PC, which gained a couple of M. 2 drives and, as a consequence, has fewer SATA ports available for larger traditional hard drive storage to be attached.
It arrived at 09.30 this morning – ordered on the 21st December, arrived on the 22nd. Given the time of year and the fact that delivery services are doubtless at pretty much full capacity, I can only express my delight at this kind of service.
Well done Amazon, especially as I snaffled this drive at a very much reduced price, I only paid 129.99 and free postage.
Pleased with that, very pleased.
As for the drive itself…….mixed impressions.
Looks wise, think of a miniature TMA.1 from ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, and you’ve pretty much got the idea.
Fingerprint magnet, but pleasingly minimalistic.
There is a very slim, very subdued ( invisible in daylight ) blue light to show the thing is powered on, a power cable with a large number of plug adapters and an adequate – but only just adequate – in length USB 3 connector cable.
You will need an extension cable if you intend to pop this on a shelf away from the PC.
Plug it in, Windows 10 finds it, and off you go.
Write speeds are slow, slow in the way a mogadon addicted sloth is slow…..but that was to be expected, really.
I’m shifting around 5 TB of data to this device and at an average write speed of around 100 MB/s, sometimes only half that, peaking at around 170 MB/s, even after disabling hot swap in device manager, so I can see that this little operation is going to take a wee while to complete.
Oh well, it’ll soon be Christmas.
Count on having to wait for around three and a half minutes to shift 10 GB data from your existing storage via the USB 3 cable and set your expectations to that level.
Once the data is shifted, the read rates aren’t too shoddy, coping with video playback perfectly well, although I cannot emphasise enough that this device will be highly unsuitable for game storage and play.
All of which would make it seem like I’m complaining.
I’m not. I’m really, really not. I’m delighted.
This is a big drive.
This drive, and the enclosure, cost me less than 130.
That is insanely good value for money.
The disk is spinning at 5425 RPM, and is, according to CrystalDiskInfo, an ST8000DM004 – 2CX188 model, with 8GB capacity, runs at 47 degrees C, and is dead quiet in operation.
The enclosure feels ever-so-slightly warm to the touch after a period of extended hard use, but remains very quiet.
You cannot get a naked drive with anything like this capacity for less than 170 retail, so, if like me, you are intending to shove a bunch of data onto it and only access that data once in a blue moon, this is a hell of a good buy.
I personally rate Seagate drives quite highly, having owned numerous examples that have performed flawlessly over long periods of time.
If this drive comes up to the durability standards of my previous Seagate drives, this will have been the perfect purchase for my needs.
I’m actually struggling to see quite how Amazon and Seagate are managing to shift this unit at this price.
If you can get this at the price I paid, go for it without even thinking. Just click.
I have used Seagate drives for a while and only had one drive failure. I always make two backups anyway so nothing was lost. At these prices it is daft to take risks. I now have six external drives, most of them disconnected unless I’m actually doing a monthly backup. This avoids the risk of ransomware which rapidly installs itself on all your connected drives.
I use two of these to replace similar devices that were full to capacity. I use them to back up all of my data and photographs (I take quite a lot) – I keep one at home, and one at a relatives house, swapping them over periodically (yes, I’m a paranoid). I can’t use cloud storage as our internet connection is simply too slow.
They were easy to set up and have worked as expected so far.
Data transfer rates are reasonable, though it did still take a long time (many hours) to back everything up the first time.
The only down side was the amount of excess parts (various mains adaptor parts, with double of some types) that it came with – quite a waste in todays climate.
This hard drive is very good so far,I have another seagate hard drive which has worked very well with no problems .The only niggle I have is the on/off indication light it is not very bright & is placed on the top at the back of the unit, why not have it on the front so you can see it but that is the only fault I can find so apart from that all is good.
I have been using Seagate drives for a number of years without any issues. This drive offered 8TB of storage and in today’s digital world 8TB is like having 100GB a decade or so ago – basically it sounds like a lot of space but in reality it gets filled up quicker than you could ever imagine. The style of this drive is like a monolith out of Kubrick’s 2001. It is nicely rectangular with the top side nice and glossy (yes a fingerprint magnetic). The device is intended as s backup device and the write speeds are not that great hitting around 120 to 130mbps which in reality should be hitting at least 170 to 180mbps. The Read speeds are decent and max out well. There is not a lot to say about this device apart from that it works, is fairly cost effective and looks great and would stack great too. The case is plastic and feels rather cheap to the touch and if you dropped this – expect it to smash into a gazillion pieces. Buy it if you need the storage – ok buy it because you WILL need the storage 🙂
