Cutting my toenails….
Its brilliant and very strong, I have some big logs that take a bit of splitting so I send on the arm and jump up and down gently, while leaning against something for when it goes.. its quite robust but dont go mad…
You will need to sharpen the blade sooner or later, its even easier then..
A very good idea and excellent product which works well and I no longer disturb neighbours with chopping logs. Very highly recommended
Loved how easy it was to assemble and operate, it makes splitting logs an easy task and it folds up for storage it’s brilliant.
Some reviews suggested this log splitter was on the flimsy side but I simply cannot understand why. I have only just started using it and it has surpassed my expectations. Far from being fragile it seems to be built of strong heavy steel and very tough. Time will tell of course and I will report back later. This splitter will easily sort out the standard sort of logs that we have delivered – say up to 6 inches diameter by 12 inches in length. It’s surprising just how much kindling you can get from two or three logs! There could improvements made of course but, considering the cost (85) this was good value.
Just got this device, so much easier then a axe. Great little device folds down for easy storage.
I found it not as good as I thought it was going to be
Step aerobics
I spent the day cracking chestnut with it!
Freshly cut!, hard as you like!
It’s really rewarding
Easy to turn a log into a pile of kindling, even with a bad back.
When kindling is this readily available, I can start a fire with a firelighter and a stack of kindling and start adding logs after half an hour.
Sometimes the rachet does not engage properly so the splitter wont work.
Most of the time it’s ok but I would consider it a bit of a design glitch.
Well… I’d say this works well and enables me to cut through those logs we get delivered for our stove into smaller chunks. You need a bit of force, so yes, being 6.2ft and about 15st + probably helps. You also need to know a bit about splitting wood, else you’ll struggle. I’d recommend.
Yes it is adjustable, but if you don’t have it set high, there isn’t really enough travel to allow the next ‘detent’ to engage on the log holder, with the result that the splitter doesn’t advance through the log.
However if you are happy to have the pedal set high, then this splitter works extremely well and is very easy to use.
Definitely recommended; if you are shorter though, just be prepared for a very long press on the pedal 🙂
Can’t get to 5 stars for this. Too much compromise. Not as powerful as a more expensive one – but doesn’t need power and is limited by your own body weight. Will split things that an axe won’t but takes ages. Useful to have in the armoury but doesn’t replace the hard work of hitting the back of the axe with a sledge hammer. Folds nice and small though.
I was a bit sceptical about this item as to whether it would perform as advertised. I was pleasantly surprised. It came all but assembled. Just had to add the front feet with a simple pin and I was away. The splitter performs excellently with very little effort. Whoever thought of this is a genius. I have been able to split my logs with ease and would thoroughly recommend it. It has saved me from putting an axe through my foot time and time again. Buy it.
Overall very pleased and would certainly recommend.
Update:
I have now used this device to split around 40 rounds / logs, and I am happy to upgrade it to 5 stars. It is easy to operate, sturdy, and comfortably splits logs up to, and just over the specified size. I have been able to split knotty wood fairly efficiently which was proving difficult with my axe.
I can’t see the point in spending hundreds on a splitter unless you intend doing loads of work. If you’re like me an occasional user who doesn’t fancy swinging a maul this will suffice nicely. It also seems to be well made.
I found the best pressure came when I stood on the lever with both feet(I am 11 stone aged 90 years)
I would recommend it to my friends, but not loan…I would never get it back!. Cecil Hovard..
I had been cutting my firewood with an axe, but a shoulder injury makes it impossible to keep doing that. This log splitter is foot-operated so it’s ideal for me. Assembly was easy, although the instructions for the safety clip weren’t crystal clear, but once you get it right it’s “obvious” that it’s right.
The logs split with minimal effort. At first I thought something was wrong, because I was splitting very short pieces (4 inches/100mm) and it wouldn’t work. However for 5 inches or longer it’s great. I can split the very short pieces by putting two in together. I’m splitting pine that has been kept out of the rain for 12 months since felling, and it splits very easily and cleanly.
The splitter seems quite solid. If you want to store it back in the box, you need to remove the cross-brace, which is a bit of a fiddle. I’m storing mine loose instead.
This log splitter is amazing. My brother had just bought one and was showing it off to me, and as soon as I saw it I went straight home and ordered one for myself. It came really quickly, and I have used it loads. It works on all kinds of logs, within the specified limits, and is effortless. I thoroughly recommend it for anybody needing to split logs for the home fire. Far easier and more accurate than an axe!
