This watch suits me as I find it extremely easy to read both in daylight and at night. Strap is solid and good double clip closing is a bonus. Easy to set to exact time and keeping time perfectly. Very good price and service from seller.
Fab watch I always buy seiko if I can ,it’s quite heavy on your arm ,looks great Orange is my favorite colour it’s like a bit of Summer on your arm,I wouldn’t recommend wearing it except for going out it’s bulky I’ve come close to damaging it a couple of times on surfaces,be careful with i
As I mentioned good value for the money from one of the best affordable brands, keeps good time and goes well with whatever you ware.
Sold by Amazon
Watch stopped working after one week. Ordered replacement which arrived broken, links missing from bracelet & clearly had been worn/used.
Since ordered same watch from Watchnation (via amazon) and I’m delighted. Better packaging and protective film over Watch face, case & bracelet. The lack of these on the 1st two sent by Amazon should’ve been a red flag.
Great watch, choose your supplier carefully.
It’s a nice, heavy, comfortable, masculine watch with an easy to read face and Day/Date.
A bit larger and heavier than my Omega Speedster Mk2, and that is a substantial watch.
I like the mesh strap. I have no idea how good the waterproofing is. I usually remove my watches before doing dishes, having a bath or shower. At 70 I don’t expect to dive deeper than 100 metres again in my life.
My only very slight gripe is you really have to pay attention to the clasp. If you haven’t checked it’s locked, it can come adrift later. I do prefer the fold over and click type that I have on my smaller white faced Seiko Sea Urchin.
There is a blue faced version of the same watch at nearly 70 more than I paid for this. (What’s with the pricing guys?) I would have bought but definitely not disappointed with this.
Loved this watch.birthday present for my grandson and he was over the moon.a few links had to be removed as would be with any watch.its lovely on,well balanced and looks amazing.he was delighted with it.colour green is very nice and a wee bit different.no complaints at all.
Good quality watch nice colour dial . Only minor problem is the yellow hands can be difficult to see against the orange dial.
Great, great watch. It’s a looker and size-wise the fit belies the spec it fits even my small wrist very well. Generally there is very little to dislike about this watch, may be the bracelet is a little rattley and a sapphire crystal would be a nice upgrade over the hardlex but is worth up to 300 for the finishing alone.
Don’t really like the strap that this model comes with
Seiko, the brand that caters for all budgets and taste. A beautiful watch at a very reasonable price. Swapped the bracelet out for a NATO strap and this compliments the watch even more so than the oyster bracelet. Watch case is beautifully finished and the exhibition case is always something to admire. Seiko movement keeps pretty good time and the bezel actually lines up with the dial markers. The lume is very impressive and the overall dial is simple, and aesthetical on the eye. Overall, it feels sturdy, well engineered, nicely polished and looks more expensive than it is. If you’re new to Seiko, I recommend you try them out and you may just catch the Seiko bug. I liked it so much, I purchased the same model, with the Orange dial.
It’s a Seiko so it’s easy to adjust and reliable. What more can you ask for at this point unless you intend to go diving, which I don’t…
Looks better in the flesh.not a true diver.but it’s about the look.besides who uses them for diving.and is quite water proof.and is a better time piece
Now, I have been collecting watches for little over a year and this Seiko 5 is my second Seiko. My first impressions were brilliant, the bezel has a great action (better than my more expensive Seiko Samurai retailing at $450) The pop of green on the dial and bezel is subtle but noticeable in a good way alongside that nice burst of orange on the seconds hand, also the movement is great for the price. Seiko are known for their competitive in house movements at this price range which is a great feature for us watch enthusiasts to enjoy. 100m of water resistance cannot be sniffed at, at this price range and the stock nato strap is adequate ( as you can see I have already swapped mine out ) and you will have great lume on the hour markers and hands with Seiko being one of the leaders in this market for luminescence. Overall, it got me thinking that this could be the perfect automatic starter watch for new enthusiasts, as you are getting a very well rounded package from a great brand with a lot of history in this market. Also the modifying scene for these watches is huge and they generally hold their value pretty well. I would 100% recommend this watch if you have the money as it is a do anything, go anywhere piece that offers a great comfortable wear and good time keeping.
It’s beautiful watch we’ll made
comfortable silicon strap with leather like inserts
Worth a money
Great Seiko reliabily. Smart looking watch, nice comments about colour.
AMAZON STATE YOU HAVE UNTIL 31 1 23 TO RETURN THIS WATCH. BUT SUPPLER WATCHNATION PUT A RED TAG ON STRAP IF THIS TAG ,IS REMOVED YOU CARNT RETURN IT. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE TAG TO TRY THE WATCH CORRECTLY ON .
This is a great watch for my growing collection and will be used everyday I work as it has an Orange face and the company I work has a corporate colour of Orange.
If you are not looking for accuracy ( a quartz watch or a smartwatch will beat any mechanical watch doesn’t matter if it’s a 200 or 200000 watch) this watch can be a very nice watch for most occasions. At full msrp price it doesn’t shine but sometimes goes 40-50% discount and at that price it is really a good deal
The watch is incredible – no complaints. However one would expect the watch box to be just as nice considering the amount of money paid.
It’s cardboard, and it already started to strip, 1 day after I received the watch. I’ve had to shell out 20.00 for a proper watchbox.
I found this to be a great quality watch that’s perfect for everyday use and it can even do well at smart events. The quality of the watch is top notch, it has incredible build quality, you can tell it’s well crafted and it is very comfortable to wear.
Lume is great and it even fits well on smaller wrist mine is 16cm or 6.29 inches, it’s really easy to adjust with the micro adjust or by taking the links off which is smooth and easy. The bezel is lovely and lines up well and quite difficult to move about is a good way.
Overall I think it’s a fantastic watch from a brand with so much history, the watch is great value for money and great of all occasions. Recommended.
Hope you found my review useful.
This watch is very good quality especially for the price of the watch i was quite shocked to be completely honest. I unfortunately returned the watch due to me not liking the colour of the one I purchased however have since purchased the same watch but a different colour. The watch is very easy to read for me and doesn’t feel uncomfortable on my wrist. If your after a watch that is stylish, modern and sturdy then I would definitely recommend this watch.
Had to return the first watch as it was gaining 5 minutes every hour . Returning it was quick and easy . Second one looks and works great .only gripe is the bracelet and clasp look and feel a bit cheap .
It’s a nice watch, light than expected. However not as good as some other the other similar style watches, I like the fact it’s automatic, otherwise would you have purchased. I would have prefer the face to be bigger and slightly more in depth.
Overall nice watch but wouldn’t pay full price, so was lucky to get it on sale
Bought to replace an Omega Speedmaster (see Watchmaster.com) as I couldn’t justify having so much invested in a watch, plus it made me too self conscious and wary, and I must say that the Seiko is a great replacement! Much more accurate and far easier to wear but obviously without the cachet of the Omega which is still the best looking watch ever, imho. Excellent value at 125, cannot be faulted.
Loverly watch wish I had got one sooner my first Seiko, no alignment issue, Loverly case finish. Good lume, easy to read, Not worried about the push pull crown and only 100mtrs of water resistance as I won’t be going diving with this watch, Also no sapphire glass but this is more shatter proof,
Will be adding more straps this like a 1 pass or 2 piece nato. Might get a better metal bracelet too.
Another quality watch from Seiko. Absolutely love these watches. You can feel the quality as soon as you put it in your wrist. Very good construction, the strap is adjustable and the clasp very secure. You could wear this watch and never take it off; water resistant to 10 ATM that’s around 100m so that’s water proof enough for me! The attention to detail is excellent, with watch having a glass back. Seiko have just done it again. Lovely watch, comfortable, accurate and easy to wear.
Attractive orange style reminiscent of DOXA. Not too garish as one might think and a good size for the wrist. Compared to my quartz only gains a few seconds a day. Pressed clasp but it would be unwarranted to expect more at this price. Otherwise subtle design and high legibility. No lume pip but bezel lines up with very little backplay! Applied indices and uncluttered dial with only three lines of text. Day and date complications at 3 oclock and no cyclops. Hardlex crystal and exhibition caseback. Nice heft to it but not overweight. Part of the Seiko 5 line-up and therefore well priced.
Like I said in the title, this Seiko is a great little watch, but it’s definitely nowhere near 43mm in diameter! I’ve measured it several times, and it’s 39/40mm, so the 43mm specification is misleading. So, if you have a big wrist (over 7.5″) or you just like larger watches, you might want to think twice before ordering one of these.
Just received my Seiko 5 sports on a Nato strap. So far I’m very impressed. I have collected watches on and off for the last decade and am lucky to own some rare and higher end pieces. I wanted a good, reliable daily wear watch and, once again, chose Seiko.
The watch is what you would expect from Seiko….I don’t think there is a better brand for watches at this price point. Its well made, finished and as a bonus has the exhibition case back.
You can’t use it for diving but it’s 100m waterproof and to be honest…when is the last time most of us went below 3m in a pool?
Superb watch and highly recommended.
I received it an hour ago. Exactly as represented, no bad surprises. No obvious QA/QC issues (was afraid of that…).
Really lovely watch. Very nice color, bezel is nice and smooth, very satisfying operation. As every other bezel, this one has a backtrip but it’s almost non-existent. Bezel doesn’t wiggle and it’s better than most of the watches in this price range. I’ve seen worse on Rolexes, in fact. Only one thing I don’t really like and it came as a surprise is the bilingual (French/English) week-day names. I don’t see a way to control it and it’s going on my nerves.
Now, for those who think they are buying a SRPD model. Look at it more carefully and read the details. This is not a typical SRPD. In fact it’s not a real diver at all. With only 100m rating (not stated on the dial, surprise) and no bezel pip dot lume. NATO strap doesn’t look anything special, but you can see it’s made specifically for this watch. I don’t like much the green/cyan seconds hand. In my mind a yellow one or a red one on this chocolaty design would fit better. But these are all things I knew before I bought the watch and can’t complain much.
Have only had it a week but so far, very happy. Chose this model to have the fabric strap as silastic and metal now causing allergic reactions on my wrist. Dial very clear, can be read at night, date and day function also very clear. Seems more accurate than my very expensive self wind Swiss watch that is advertised as the official timer at all the Grand Prix’s. I have not taken it off when I shower so seems water resistant and I plan to wear it for water sports such as swimming and sailing. So far so good, I would highly recommend this watch at this price.
Post-script , a week after writing this review the watch just stopped! I am returning it to Amazo
Can’t get enough of this watch, my others have taken very much a back seat.
Size wise I have a medium size wrist and and it fits perfectly. It is rather large, thickness wise and I guess that’s due to being able to see the insides from the back.
Was very easy to set up, once id read the instructions. Being automatic it does not appear to need a lot of manual winding, although I’d say I did wind it up every 3 days or so, or just because I can.
The lume on this watch is amazing, it stands out like no other watch I have.
This was my first Seiko, I can’t see it betting my last.
Downside? Only one, and tbh is nothing to do with the watch. Its the watch box, its very cheap, looks like it was an after thought. Really I have a Timex watch that cost far less and the box is better quality.
Would I recommend this watch, without a doubt!!
Bought this watch simply on watching a YouTube revue. Watch looks great in retro style and wears comfortably, however this watch does not suit my larger seven and a half inch wrist as the lug to lug distance is short so the watch on my wrist sits awkwardly proud. I would suggest this watch is best suited for smaller wrist sizes say anything up to seven inches otherwise this looks and feels a great produc
Quite hard to review. I personally like this new line of skx replacements; I’ve got the blue srpd71 and this orange one. This orange dial is a slightly lighter tangerine colour than say a doxa orange, and the sunburst effect is very strong – I really like the whole look and case design. The bezel is a bit sloppier than my 71 and doesn’t line up with 12 o’clock exactly, which my 71 does. So some quality control issues to bear in mind now with these entry level seikos, in addition to the slowly declining quality of the bracelets. I’ve got this on a black and orange nato and it looks great.
Great watch, as ever with seiko all the money is spent on the dial and movement. The orange is much better in person from photos as its got a slight sunburst effect. Had this about a week and accuracy is pretty spot on, barely a few seconds a day out. The bezel has nice solid action and it is pretty close to full alignment, which is usually where seiko’s are famous for getting wrong. It will come as a surprise to no one that the bracelet is sh1t, all seiko’s are. Going yo replace this with a strapcode helix or oyster when they are in stock in UK.
I’ve had numerous watches over the years and I’m usually a smartwatch guy but for a while I’ve looked at ‘proper’ watches. So after weeks and months of research I ended up looking at Seiko.
This relatively new Seiko 5 line is just absolutely spot on. There are quite a few variations of this watch but I was drawn to the blue dial and as a lover of Nato watch straps, this version was the one for me.
I’ve got quite large wrists (around 7.5 inches) so this watch looks less bulky on me than it does in just about every photo I’ve seen on other people’s wrists.
The RRP is absolutely reasonable for what you get and the price on Amazon Warehouse that I paid was around 142 (used/new and it’s absolutely brand new). I’d happily have paid the current 169 and actually even the full price based on having the watch in hand.
Looks really classy, feels expensive, the luminous markings are really impressive and on top of it all, it’s a bit special being an Automatic watch which is something I’ve never had and I know it doesn’t keep time as well as a Quartz battery powered watch but that’s kind of missing the point. Love it.
I know some watch nerds bemoan the ‘downgrade’ from the 200 meters WR of the SKX to the 100M of these new 5’s. To me that’s not an issue and I prefer a non screw down crown it’s easier to set the time. The case finishing, movement and dial are all upgraded so for less than 300 quid this watch is a great deal. Looks amazing on a Nato too.
I normally wear a dress watch and don’t like clunky watches but it doesn’t wear too big for a 42mm due to short lug length and this is my ‘weekend beater’ which actually elevates casual outfits like jeans and a tee shirt or tracksuit/sweatpants that would look odd paired with a dress watch.
V high quality and can easily compete with most watches twice its price.
Accuracy on mine is also surprising with a 15seconds deviation over a week – anyone into mechanical watches would tell you that’s v difficult to achieve, especially at this price point.
Had some issues with the Amazon delivery service as it got lost in transit which damaged the overall buying experience but got refunded within 3 days and ordered again. 2nd time around it arrived as expected within 24hrs.
Highly recommend the product if you want a proper watch from a 100+ year old brand that’s still making amazing products today.
Purchased the SRPD55K1 mid February ,first one I received had the notorious Seiko fault of misalignment which is usually the bezel insert or chapter ring however mine was the indice at 6 o’clock (see pic 3 ) Returned this for replacement which was absolutely perfectly aligned.I have purposely waited for the watch to run in for at least a month(wearing it for at least 12 hours per day )before reviewing the accuracy of this watch and it is astounding for the price. The movement is the in-house Seiko 4R36 and after 4 to 5 weeks it seems to have settled at minus 3 seconds per day which is 99.995% accurate. The look of the watch is very good and easily readable, its luminous hands and indices are outstanding and it has 100 meters water resistance which is more than enough for anyone unless you’re James bond. It has hand winding and hackable features. It is everything you need in a mechanical watch with the knowledge that its from a great watch manufacturer. I know theres a lot of competition in this price range ,even some cheaper but all in all…….they just dont seem to be able to match that feeling of having a quality Seiko watch on your wrist.
N.b This watch has come in for unwarranted criticism for been a poor SKX replacement. It is not the SKX replacement ,its a Seiko sports, if you need the James Bond 200 meters water resistance buy a seiko prospex but be prepared to dig deep into your pocket.
I had been looking at taking a step up to a good quality automatic watch for some time and after reading several reviews the Seiko 5 range ticked all the boxes for both form and function. A good quality movement and build quality but at a budget that could be considered very reasonable for what you get and I have not been disappointed. It has kept perfect time after nearly two weeks use and the NATO strap is wonderful for someone with hairy arms such as myself. I would happily buy another but as this one is so good why would I?
It is worth noting that the watch comes with a dual language date function, I think mine may be in English and Italian. This has it display two variations for each day of the week, one in English, one in Italian, and then again. What you have to do is set it to your chosen language and then at midnight it moves forward one (to the next language) and then at 1am it moves forward one more to the correct language. It got me worried initially thinking I had been sent a watch intended for another region.
This is a great looking watch. I got the black and red version (SRPD83K1) as I wanted something different to the norm. It looks fantastic, like something designed by Kylo Ren, Darth Maul or Darth Vader! It is my first Seiko but not my first automatic watch. I’ve included a number of photos as well as a video (including lume shot) which I hope you find helpful.
Much has been written on watch sites/forums etc about the fact this isn’t a proper divers (no screw down crown and only 100 metres water resistance) but honestly I couldn’t care less. This looks great, has enough water protection for 99.9% of things most people do and it’s also been accurate and only needs adjusting every so often.
I initially thought that this version wouldn’t have any lume because… well it’s red… but I was wrong. Charge it up via sunlight/light and the red markers, hands and second hand lollipop counterweight all glow a orange/pink colour. It again looks great but sadly doesn’t last that long into the night before fading… but still as I was expecting none I’m pleased with it.
The case is a smooth black and the unidirectional bezel (with non-lumed aluminium insert) turns with a reassuring weight and a damped clicking. There is little to no back-play on it either. The applied indices and hands are excellent and the chrome/metal surrounds catch the light really well so that the dial is legible in almost all daylight conditions. The crown pulls out nicely, hacking the watch (stopping the second hand) and finding the date and time adjust positions is easy. You can also use it to hand wind the watch to get it going if you so wish. Alternatively a little shake should be enough.
At the rear of the watch is a display caseback so that you can see the automatic movement and jewels doing there thing. I love showing this to my youngest daughter who is fascinated by it, especially the jewels!
Seiko use their propriety Hardlex crystal rather than Sapphire crystal and that would always be my one complaint as Sapphire will not scratch over time. That said with a bit of care the Hardlex should be fine and not an issue.
The strap…. is good to OK. The length is great for my 7.25 inch wrist with just enough left over to fold back into the metal strap loops. It’s comfy to wear but the nylon could have been a bit better quality. It feels thin. Still you get a Seiko signed buckle and all the metalwork is black to match the case.
I’m very pleased with this and the price when I bought it was fantastic. Only downside is that I now want the all black version!
I had been looking at reviews to find a suitable replacement for my everyday watch. It really had to be a fit and forget type of watch which did not require expensive specialist battery replacement every few years.
I needed to replace my faithful Eco-drive divers watch which had started to fail on dim days after 10 years of excellent service.
I read about the excellent reputation of the Seiko 5 automatic movement, and as a full divers was no longer a requirement of mine, I decided to buy one.
The build quality is very good, and the movement has more than enough accuracy for my needs. It gained about 30 seconds in seven days which I can live with. It’s slightly larger than the Eco-drive, and feels quite tough and well made.
If you are looking for a watch that you can wear every day, but looks smart enough for occasions as well, then you should seriously consider this.
Update March 2022
Decided to follow the trend and ‘mod’ my watch by fitting the quality Miltat stainless steel strap made specifically to fit this watch.
This takes it to another level!
This is the 4th Seiko I own along with a Kinetic SQ100, Monster Gen 1 and King Samurai and I really like it. I’ve never owned an SKX so I wasn’t going to compare but they are two different watches. SKX is a divers watch and the 5 Sports is more a fashion piece. End of.
The orange sport is a very nice piece. The photos don’t do it justice, the dial really ‘pops’ in the light and there is this metallic orange on the bezel markers that really compliment the dial. The uni-directional bezel is lovely and firm on the turn and absolutely zero play. The crystal is Hardlex (Seiko’s own) and I’m not bothered it isn’t sapphire. My 8 year old Monster has Hardlex and there isn’t a scratch on it and that watch has taken bashing.
The applied indices and logo look really good and match really well with the gold hour and minute hands. However, I fully expect the bezel to scratch easily as I believe it’s aluminium and it’s a soft metal. Lume is typical Seiko which means it’s brilliant. The overall readability and legibility is fantastic, very easy to read.
Build quality is typical Seiko in that for every good there is probably a not-so-good! The chapter ring and bezel line up perfectly, dial is clean and there are no scratches or marks anywhere. The only real downside is the bracelet which I was expecting to be like my Monster and Samurai but it’s cheaper and quite squeaky. I’ll be changing to a NATO strap when I can because the squeak is very annoying. That isn’t to say it’s not comfy, it’s very comfy on the wrist and with 4 levels of micro adjustment you can get the perfect fit.
Inside is the 4R36 (same as the 4R35 in my King Samurai but has day/date) so it isn’t amazing but it’s good enough. Hacking and handing winding are doable if those things are important to you.
Overall, I really like it and will probably daily drive this as much as I can. I’ll definitely be buying more of the 5 Sports to expand the collection.
*Update – switched to a nato strap. Looks epic*
I bought this because I fancied a diver-style watch (I don’t dive so there was no need for a proper dive watch) and I wanted to see how I got on with a mechanical watch. So far, it’s been good; the watch is well made and the NATO strap is comfortable. The hands and markers have excellent lume and accuracy is what you would expect for a mechanical at this price point (loses 5 seconds/day). The watch wears smaller than the case size suggests, due to the short lugs and crown at 4 o’clock, however it does sit quite tall on the wrist, especially on the NATO strap, so probably not best worn with long-sleeved shirts. Overall, a really good budget watch.
Great looking watch
I wanted alternative my usual black or dark faced style I tend to have in my collection. At first impression I was not pleased with the look but the orange is vibrant and every time I catch a glimpse in a mirror it looks amazing and as a result it has really grown on me.
Being an automatic it needs to be worn. Accuracy is good and I’ve not noticed more than a few seconds gain each day (-/+ 10secs max). Wears really well, nice weight, and build quality. The only downside for me is the lack of sapphire glass.
I bought the sports with the orange dial and wow it just pops right out at you, it’s crazy how beautiful this watch is when you see it in person. It’s comfortable to wear and looks great. There are loads of video’s on youtube for these watches and they tend to be highly regarded and I’d agree. You get more than you pay for but don’t expect Rolex quality for Seiko 5 price.
There are few minor gripes where the day marker and the bezel don’t line up very well. Accuracy is what you’d expect for an automatic in this price range but having a hackable movement means resetting the time every day or so is quick and easy.
I’d recommend this for anyone wanting a quality automatic on a budget.
Accurate – running at +/- 1 or 2seconds per day for the past 6 months. ‘Sleeping’ position (overnight) is best dial up with mine. Lume is good, lasting over 3h. Maybe the bezel is out of alignment by a very tiny amount, but not a deal breaker.
Compared with a similarly priced Orient Mako II: the movements are quite similar; both hand-wind and hack. However the Orient has a screw-down crown and 200m water resistance so it comes top in the comparison. The Mako does look a little more old fashioned though and has a more ‘cluttered’ dial. The bracelets on both watches are similar quality.
Overall, this is a very good watch for someone who can cope with its weight and size.
HOWEVER – the price of this watch is up and down like a fiddler’s elbow – one day 165, then 158, then 185 . . 175. I feel this is quite unacceptable; the variation is too fast and too great for exchange rate variation and suspect there’s an ‘algorithm’ that is malfunctioning.
Knocked a star off for possible QC and build quality from the modern Seiko as the first one I had would not wind via the rotor, only hand wound. Returned it and got a replacement, which has been OK so far.
Put mine on a Jubilee bracelet and it looks and wears great. Chapter ring alignment on mine is pretty good.
I have no problem with these not being true dive watches. If anything it’s nice not to have to unscrew the crown every time I want to adjust the watch or give it a little wind. I’m not a diver so thats not an issue, 100M is plenty for me! Theres plenty of true Seiko divers out there if you want one, such as the Prospex series.
Great watch looks really good in real life when you get it on wrist. I chose the green dial with gold accents and it’s a bit of a chameleon, in certain lighting the dial will look black but in full light the green dial is spectacular. This might have the skx looks but it is a different beast altogether with the new movement that allows hacking and hand winding, it is only 100m water resistant but that’s fine for me how many use dive watches for diving. It will be good enough for swimming and snorkelling on hols and then be smart enough for the evening.
It keeps time very well indeed I think mine has lost about 3 seconds over the course of a week. The lume on the dial is super legible at night however there is none on the bezel at all. The strap is very comfortable to wear usually have nato or leather straps for my watches, but this bracelet although a little jingley jangley and the clasp only pressed metal, is very easy on wrist. Links were easy to remove with the 5 tool kit bought at the same time as the watch saving a chunk of cash by not having to pay a jeweler to size it up, and it only took me 15minutes.
My first Seiko and probably won’t be my last. Service and delivery from Amazon as always first class.
