Sony ICD-PX470 Digital Wide-Stereo MP3 Voice Recorder
Sony ICD-PX470 Digital Wide-Stereo MP3 Voice Recorder with S-Microphone, Built-In USB, 4 GB Memory, SD Memory Slot and 55 Hours Recording
Low cut filter eliminates unwanted noiseFilter out low-frequency background noises when you record by engaging the low cut filter. Sources of unwanted noise like projectors, traffic or wind can be filtered out of your recording, so it’s easy to make out voices when you listen back. | S-microphone system captures distant or quiet soundsNow you can record those faint audio sources without capturing excessive background noise, thanks to the high-sensitivity, low-noise S-microphone. Even the sound of birds twittering in the distance can be captured naturally and clearly. | Adjustable microphone range for clearer voicesAdjustable microphone settings hone in on the sound you want to capture. When you’re recording a single voice, Focus mode captures a narrow field of sound from one direction. When you’re in meetings, the Wide-Stereo mode opens up the range to capture everyone in the room. Choose from four ‘scene’ pre-sets (music, meeting, interview, dictation) to further optimise the audio settings. |

Well priced, plugged in a lav mic and was really pleased with the result. Small too so easy to hide away when filming.
Had one which I used every workday. Didn’t treat it very well as it was in and out of my briefcase all the time, used it for 4 years, before it gave up the ghost. Battery life was also very good.
Made sense to buy another Sony, which has been a good replacement so far.
I bought an alternative – which I sent back (as not a patch on my previous Sony), serves me right for not sticking with Sony!
easy to use and i can load the records easily via the USB. the microphoen can be better…
The sound quality is good , its easy to use as well. But in case you use it for whole day the battery will last for 1. 5 days only. But overall a good produc
It is ok I guess, but this is my first time of using anything similar. I find the menu is hard to use and orient which record is which because you can’t label the files…so when you have a hundred of records and want to listen something on the go , you’ll not know which record is in which file… I find this disorienting.
Very pleased with this it does what I wanted it to do.
This audio dictaphone is so easy to use. It also picks up the recordings very clearly.
I only wish it had more storage on it as I need to keep the files I have recorded. I think it has 56 hours. Which is good if you can delete and re record. I have bought this audio dictaphone before and will buy it again.
I have tried a few recorders, this one is the best out of 5 I have tried. With the setting on voice activated with the rode wireless go, it works a treat. The sound quality is great on mics or plug in mics
A good device. Fit for purpose. It performed as expected.
Great for when you’re out getting coffee and you need to note your findings. I recommend calling yours “Diane”.
Great for recording decent quality MP3.
I use the mic in from a small mixing desk.
The lack of backlight on the screen is my only regre
I have just purchased a used Sony ICD-PX470 (to replace an older, damaged model) and I have found it of equal quality and easier to use and it is lighter. The menu system is much easier to use, thankyou Sony! The start-up and close times are much shorter being only a couple of seconds, with the recorder responding quickly to the power switch: my old recorder took about ten seconds to start up. Having in-built stereo microphones is very handy, and you can always select mono by either using a mono microphone or choosing 48 kps mp3 recording format. I have not fully tested it yet, but the batteries seem to be lasting longer. The full-sized USB plug is very useful, but I recommend you use a USB extension lead to connect to your computer. Sony don’t provide one, but you can choose the length you need! No, you can’t recharge rechargeable batteries through the USB, but I have been using a separate battery charger unit for years, and changing the batteries is easy. All in all, it does exactly what Sony say it will. Excellent value for money.
I got this mostly for note taking. Just switch on, press and record using only one hand. I recorded a radio play using a cable and the playback quality was acceptable over the built in speaker and even better via the earphones. Just remember to carry two AAA batteries with you at all times.
So the Sony is more expensive (and less ‘cute’) than the Amazon recommended option – but the ‘cute’ Amazon recommended option I bought only lasted about three weeks (less than 10 hours total recording time) and I sent it back and got a refund. So far so good with the Sony – feels robust, works well, good sound, decent sized screen, easy to use and the inbuilt USB is great. Only downside is that it uses standard AAA batteries not a rechargeable Li-ion.
I am so glad I ignored the negative reviews.
Okay – the sound quality is a BIT below par, but – what do you expect? It’s not supposed to be Audiophile or super Hi-Fi!
I bought this as an MP3 player and with a 32Gb card it goes on and on and on. The battery life – AAA x 2 is also very impressive.
For the price this is a great piece of kit!
The voice recording is adequate and fit for purpose.
I’ve used this for recording meetings, recording organ music in church, recording hymns for online services, recording birdsong in the field – all sorts of things. It hasn’t let me down yet – just choose the right recording and playback settings and it will do its job. Battery life is really good, provided earphones are used. The only thing I would have liked was to be able to wind back, but the track mark system helps a great deal and a wind-back system would have sent the price up. I love this little machine.
It is compact, easy to use. Only used on short tests up till now. Seems to pick up sound okay with different microphone options which are worth trying. File transfer is easy and no issues with playback.
Although this is a memo taker it actually reaches into other areas by virtue of it’s stereo capability and CD resolution recording setting. It can be used for recording music and has some useful settings to accomplish this. It’s not quite up to studio quality and the built in microphones are a basic but decent quality,
I have been using it with a Roland CS-10EM binaural headset to record my audio experiences when I’m out and about and the results are uncannily good! The headset works perfectly with the Sony recorder (as will any external microphone requiring plug-in power) and the recording quality is excellent, clean and low noise. Plenty of dynamic range available for most situations. For use out and about it is extremely convenient as it its about half the size of an old (non smart) mobile phone and the batteries last for more than enough time for a days roaming around.
It transfers to PC easily enough with the built in USB connector. However, this arrangement does seem a bit vulnerable to being knocked out of place and I worry it might break! I think I would have preferred a socket and cable arrangement.
It can take Micro SD cards but will store more than 5 hours of high quality WAV recording using the on board 4Gb memory so this device comes pre-loaded with a usable amount of memory. It does also record in MP3 format in which case you can store over 39 hours at 192kbps.
The only possible negative is the display which has tiny text and can be difficult to read at times. But once you’ve got it set up the controls are easy so shouldn’t present a problem.
Altogether a very neat, high quality device.
A good recorder. Shame it doesn’t have a back light nor can you rename your files on the recorder. Apart from that it’s good.
Basic recording is pretty easy but I didn’t find the operations intuitive. There are pages of instructions available to download for more detailed instructions on how to operate the recorder.
I’m not a particularly tecky person but I am slowly getting to grips with how to get the best from it.
I bought two of these to record interviews for my PhD research. At first I was looking at all kinds of fancy ones that were 200+. I’m glad I chose these as they do the job I need. I have had 12 of my audio recordings returned from the transcriber and the sound has been listed as ‘great’. In other words the transcriber could hear the interview clearly.
Hi, I like to record myself playing and singing with a view to self improvement. I had a Zoom H1 which broke and my son had just bought the Sony dictaphone. I tried it, it worked perfectly, showing up a lot of my flaws, and I have many, but the Sony is flawless. Thanks Amazon.
Clear audio, easy to use with windows and Mac and controls are very simple. Battery life has lasted ages
Ideal for a student who is attending seminars or conducting interviews as there’s loads of recording modes and sensitivities that are saved after turning off
I love it. I have recorded about 30 hours of interview now and the sound quality is great. Still have plenty of battery (from the original ones that come in the package) and I’m extremely happy with it! I would definitely buy it again.
I bought this to record conversations in a foreign language so I can then play them back as study aids. I wanted to be able to record a conversation, send an MP3 file to my laptop and then transfer the file as a podcast to my iPod so i could listen to it. I found all this worked just as I hoped so I am really please with this purchase.
Batteries last a lifetime if they’re a decent quality. Plenty of recording time at the max quality setting and has been serving me well for motorcycle vloging! I do not believe these are waterproof, but I have been caught in the rain a few times and its still going strong!
The first time I tried this I thought the recording was OK. Then I read the instructions and tried again and realised it’s actually very good.
My main disappointment was that a massive multinational like Sony made no effort to accommodate users of other operating systems than Microsoft windows. At this price I hoped for some voice to text software at least, but the only software they supply is uniquely Microsoft compatible and as I am a Linux user that’s of no use to me, not even working with Wine. It’s a bit discouraging using it for interviews if you’re going to have to spend many hours typing them up.
Love this little recorder. Great for recording our band practices as it has a line in (connected to our mixer) Not lots of features but a soild performer! Also it doesn’t distort when recording through the built in mic as it has various modes which prevent that from happening. The batts last a while too!
I only wanted this device for personal note taking rather than playing music. I am not therefor a discerning used. However, I liked the small size and the ease of use. My only niggle is that the instructions even on the web were minute. It would be nice to be able to download an A4 manual. Otherwise, it met my simple requirements perfectly.
