I’ve reached a point in life where I want a camera that will do everything without needing regular trips to the gym to keep fit enough to carry the camera body and several lenses. So some years ago I started using Bridge Cameras. They were ok: the sensors were a little small, making them slower to operate in poor lighting, and the autofocus was…slow.
Then I heard about this camera, checked the reviews, and decided to go for it. That was about 3 weeks ago. Since then I’ve taken about 600 photos, as test shots and to take the sort of photographs I really love to take. The two photos attached were taken at a zoo, from a distance, with chicken wire between me and the subject animals. The combination of an excellent lens and exposure system, and a continuous shooting option that meant that in seconds I could take multiple perfectly exposed shots offering slightly different poses, so that I could choose the one that spoke most to me. And these are a couple of the excellent results I’ve had so far. The best part about it is that I’ve still a lot to learn about the camera, but I’m incredibly impressed so far. The photo of the huts was taken in low light at ISO 6400, at something like 1/13th second hand held. The stabilisation software worked, and the photo is excellent quality especially for the lighting. Couldn’t be happier.
I bought this camera as I was finding my birding lens too heavy to lug around whilst walking I wanted something lightweight and easy to move around for birds in flight. To say I am pleased with it would be an understatement! I am totally converted to this camera it produces quality images and is very versatile, you can take landscape , birds , insects all in one walk around without having to change lenses or carry heavy equipment. Money well spent.
It is my third bridge camera from Sony. It is the heaviest so far (just over 1 kg). This provides some sturdiness and I don’t mind. Picture quality is great and I like the larger sensor. The RX10 4 is already several years on the market and for this the price appears a bit too high. I also wished a broader range of accessories for it. I’m unsure why the Sony’s, Canons, Olympus… are not able to provide a motion sensor built in. The usual wildlife cameras suffer from bad picture quality and the RX10 4 could be a game changer if it would provide such option. Anyway I’m very happy with my purchase.
There is no doubt that this much-vaunted camera is an astonishing development in digital photography and videography effectively replacing a DSLR and several lenses.
The quality of the image defies the diminutive size of the sensor but with the caveat you may be disappointed at higher ISO levels if you are currently using a modern full frame camera.
Everyone has their own judgement on this but ISO 1600 is just about passable for me – anything above that is unusable.
So anyway the two issues I mentioned:
1. The hot shoe is the modern Sony MI meaning multiple interface. If you want an external flash it must meet this criteria or have an adapter. Whichever way you go the shoe of your flash (or of the adaptor) must be kept secure in a cover at all times when not in use as the MI fitting is essentially bare terminals on the flash rather than the hard secure pins you might normally expect (as it happens the feet are also plastic but that is a flash review rather than a camera review). Check out reviews online for that fitting if you think you will need an external flash.
2. Because an amazing 24-600 mm lens has been used, and the camera size has not increased, there is no space for the tripod fitting to be central in the foot of the camera. The screw fitting is instead placed very near the back of the camera despite all the weight being over the front of the camera. I cannot imagine risking using the tripod fitting without an adaptor to spread the load across the base – the camera is very front heavy with the lens extended. I have been unable to find a small rig or anything similar so have had to order a nasty cheap one till I can find a used good one (sunwayfoto would also be excellent but I don’t think they even make one).
Overall a great camera but two design flaws
This camera is not cheap but it oozes quality, and it feels good in your hands. This camera is the best bridge camera available, it can do almost anything. Yes, it will take a while to master everything the camera can offer but it’s worth it. Photographs taken with this camera will always be of a very high standard, once you get to know the camera. In my opinion, the RX10 MIV camera is worth every penny. If you want the best you have to pay.
Had this camera for a year now and will never sell it. My go to camera. Fantastic image quality and the 24 to 600 lens is fantastic too. Cannot go wrong.
A recent purchase. Shots using AUTO are excellent. But there is so much more you can do with this camera that it will take a little time to master it.
I bought this recently, and am very impressed with the whole quality of the camera.
My usual camera that I work with is a Canon 1DX MkII with a selection of L Series fast lenses. I haven’t been doing as much professional work recently so decided to sell my usual Canon gear, o make way for an R3 eventually, so decided on a bridge camera, at least until I decide to buy some new pro-spec stuff. Must say at this point, for a Canon fan to buy Sony, felt like I’d just sold my soul(!), but have to concede, the RX10iv is a truly amazing camera, and far better quality than I expected to find with a 1 inch sensor, especially when I’m used to full frame.
Although I will go for an R3 Canon soon, I’ll definitely keep this marvel of a camera, and use it whenever I don’t want to take full SLR gear around.
I love it’s solid feel, and it’s weatherproofing, focusing is lightning fast (superbly so), as well as the very fast shutter, and the sharp results I’m getting, even close to the 600mm end of the lens – no surprise from a Zeiss lens I suppose, but very impressive all the same. I wish it was slightly wider at the other end, but that would be asking too much perhaps.
This is very expensive for a bridge camera, but in my view, worth every penny. If your budget avails you of the choice to buy this camera, honestly – do it, it’s amazing, and you won’t be disappointed. Would I recommend – wholeheartedly, yes. Sony has a new fan!
I have only recently purchased this camera. I bought primarily as a back up to my full frame camera, a lighter camera to take on long walks. The result so far, I have found quite impressive and haven’t used the camera to it’s full potential yet. If you are going to buy a bridge camera I think this is definitely one to consider.
This really is an excellent camera. The picture quality is fabulous, even hand held on full zoom, and the menus and controls are straightforward to use. I’ve mainly used the full auto settings and haven’t been disappointed with any of the results, but you can easily control exposure and depth of field etc as needed if preferred. It’s on the heavy side for a bridge camera, but I’ve hiked all day with it without any problems and it’s considerably lighter than a DSLR and equivalent zoom lens. It’s probably not suited to an absolute beginner, but for an enthusiastic amateur I can thoroughly recommend it.
I bought the Sony RX10 IV after reading many reviews. I wanted an all-round camera to replace my aging Pentax SLR and lenses which I could no longer be bothered to carry around.
Opening the box my first impressions were of a quality product. The finish is incredibly good. Putting the memory card and battery into the camera also gave a feeling of quality as the covers seem much more solid than my old Pentax.
The camera has so many settings and controls that it does take a little time to get your head around. However, once you get to use the camera it is a quality experience. Pictures and Video are very good, and you can control and download images to your smartphone. The camera focuses extremely quickly. The screen and viewfinder are brilliant. The zoom range is fantastic, and the lens seems sharp at all focal lengths. My only criticism would be the battery life, the screen only being vertically tiltable and of course the cost.
This camera is a brilliant allrounder and extremely versatile. Great for travel and people would want a bit more from a camera without having to carry lots of gear.
What a superb piece of equipment! My days of carting long lenses are definitely in the past. Absolutely crystal clear, images in all situations. A superb zoom, and build quality.
I have had a multitude of cameras over the years finally getting a Nikon D750, a great camera but heavy as heck. I wanted something lighter without a pile of lenses and went for the Sony.. so glad I did. a great all rounder with great video. would have liked to see it focus quicker but other than that it ticks all the boxes I need. I cant wait to take on holiday where I think it will be suited best.
Got this Rx10 iii at a bargain price 689.00 Black Friday deal, wouldn’t pay the current asking price of 1099.00 would go the whole hog and get the Rx10 IV which apparently has faster auto focus and a touch screen.
Quite happy with this camera after not doing photography since 35mm film went out.
Great zoom range to 600mm and 2400mm using digital zoom that’s equivalent to 35mm camera lenses.
Lots to learn with all the functions, options, and settings. 4K video is good too. All in all, at the right price this camera is definatley a big step up from mid range DSLR’s for which you would have to spend more for additional lenses.
Double click on my shot of the Robin.
A heck of a lot to learn but getting there slowly. At 71 it takes a little longer to sink In. Heavier than I expected but comfortable to hold and operate. Well built, good looks.
A very versatile beast; size smaller than expected (luckily); offers a wealth of features which need to be studied to get the most from this camera; the long telephoto is excellent for birding and wildlife being stabilised and weatherproof. Would recommend purchasers also buy the separate Alexander White book on the RX10 iv as the available ‘official’ manual is poor. Has produced excellent results (stills), video not of interest to this user. Cannot recommend highly enough.
I have been using Nikon DSLR cameras and lenses for a number of years and are a big admirer of their products – the only downside being the weight of the body and decent lens if you are out and about and just want some quick snaps.
I mainly shoot landscapes and wildlife and have been looking at a decent ‘all in one’ camera that I can take out with me on some quick shoots that is light enough to not put my shoulder out.
After a number of months reading reviews and talking to fellow snappers, I decided on the Sony RX10 III that was a great price at the time on Amazon. The Mk4 was an option, but I didn’t think it was worth an additional 500!!
Pros
It’s very light (1kg) and my shoulder is better!
Zoom range (24-600) is amazing and the Zeiss lens delivers pretty good results.
Image quality is decent, although obviously not as good as a top end dslr and at full zoom you do (not surprisingly) notice the difference in quality.
Camera has a built in stabilisation system (optical steadyshot) that works well and is a must at full zoom with this lens.
Ease of use – very good. As per larger dslr’s, loads of various settings for you to tweak and enjoy and very simple to switch between modes.
Excellent 4k video capabilities.
Smooth zoom
Weatherproof
Rear viewing screen tilts
Cons
Image quality at full zoom – but that’s just me being picky as you wouldn’t expect comparable results with a dslr as this is basically a top end bridge camera with a small sensor.
Price – hmmmm, tricky one this. I got mine through Amazon during Black Friday, so had a pretty good deal. Would I pay top dollar for this ie around 1,200? Defo no – but if you can get one for around 850-900 then it’s a pretty good buy.
Wi-fi – aaaaaaaarg. This is my only real issue with the camera – it’s just so hard to get it to pair with my mobile phone re image transfer.
Summary – pretty decent ‘all round’ camera that delivers great images for portraits, landscapes or wildlife shots.
I haven’t used my big nikon dslr’s for quite some time now so I guess that’s a good sign as to how good this camera is
Like many out there I spent hours reading reviews, looking at samples and many YouTube videos about this camera.
I knew almost exactly what to expect and it is almost exactly what I expected and maybe slightly better! I have updated to the latest 2.0 firmware and can confirm the animal eye tracking works.
For the size of sensor the performance is really good. I won’t bore you repeating everything that most have said about this camera. It is good, pricey, but you do get what you pay for.
Whilst this is an easy camera to pick up and use, to get the best out of it take time to learn the menu functions.
An amazing camera with the wow factor but two small gripes considering its cost is quite a high one – the battery life on a full charge is poor and the strap is awful, thin, cheap and uncomfortable
My main reason for buying a new camera in the first instance was that my older camera, a Lumix LX100, was lacking in both the pixel count and zoom range. This started to become an issue on my travels.
After a lot of research, and with my initial thoughts focusing on a mirrorless, I decided to buy the Sony RX10iv. Thus far I am very happy with the results though I have yet to test every detail of the camera. The attached photos were all taken on this camera to highlight some of it’s characteristics. Although with it’s 1″ sensor it does tend to struggle with low-light conditions, it is not impossible to get fairly decent results.
It is not the perfect camera, but it is the closest I could find for my needs. The zoom range – without having to carry and change extra lenses – is probably its strongest feature and certainly the thing that finally helped me part with my cash. I won’t go into all the technical detail as a) I don’t fully understand the whole of the cameras functions as yet and b) there is a plethora of sites on the internet and videos on YouTube that give all that information.
The camera isn’t cheap, especially when you take into account the fact that it is a bridge camera with a small sensor. But don’t let that put you off, the build quality, and quality of images, is fantastic. The brilliant focusing system and zoom range alone makes it that little bit more special when compared to its competitors.
The downsides: there is no in-built ND filtering system so you’ll need to buy these if desired. There is no time-lapse program. The RAW files do not automatically open in Lightroom 5. However, there is a Sony app that will convert the photos to TIFF format which you can then import into the editing program.
All-in-all a very good camera and certainly one I’ll be taking on all my travels and using for all my future video work.
Wonderful camera, good in all lighting conditions. Went to RHS Wisley on 18/12/18 for the Winter Glow, the whole place is a blaze of colour, a few images attached, note it was raining! Very happy with the camera.
PS Also a Which Best Buy.
An amazing camera! In fact I sold all my Nikon full frame SLR cameras and lenses to buy this – and I don’t regret it! There’s no doubt full frame sensors are better and Nikon lenses are pretty amazing. But my D750 spent 4 years in a cupboard due to its weight. The D750 + 24-120 F4 lens was around 1.7kg. The Sony with a 24-600 lens is 1.1KG. To match the 600 range with the Nikon I’d need something like a Sigma 150-600mm lens which alone weighs almost 3kg. So its Sony 1.1KG vs Nikon D750 plus lenses at 4.6Kg. I’m getting lazy and 1.1Kg is really my maximum weight for a camera. If I’m guaranteed an amazing photo – say an alien spaceship landing – then I’ll happily lug almost 5Kg around. But most of the time I come back from a hike having taken no photos.
I’ve only had this a few weeks but so far its blown my socks off – its just amazing!
My biggest fear – and what’s always put me off these “super zoom” cameras – is lens image quality.
Back 9 or 10 years ago I had a Nikon D60 and bought a super zoom 28-200mm lens. Terrible image quality. Nice and sharp in the centre but outside the centre became more and more blurry. Ended up selling it on ebay.
This camera had amazing reviews for its lens sharpness. I had my doubts. But the lens truly is sharp right from wide angle to 600mm telephoto!
I’ve yet to take a photo with disappointing lens sharpness – even the corners are pretty good. I did some comparisons between this and my Fuji X-T20 with a 23mm ( 35mm equiv ) F2 lens. Should have been an easy win for the Fuji – after all its a prime lens and one of Fuji’s better lenses. And yet when I compared the two and pixel peeped until my eyes watered, I could see no difference in sharpness or detail in the corners or centre. How is this possible?! I can only assume Sony does some computer magic that corrects any issues in camera. To be honest I was slightly gutted – the Fuji was supposed to be my super sharp, high resolution option. In fact there’s little between them, despite the Sony being a superzoom.
To give an idea of how sharp all over the frame the camera is I’ve uploaded some photos. I could have taken it at other apertures or zoomed out – I’ve yet to find a combination where image quality is poor.
The main photo shows the whole photo. Then I’ve uploaded 100% crops of the left, middle and right parts of the frame. The photo was taken at 600mm F8 1/200 second ISO 100. F8 is not the best for sharpness – diffraction will cause some softness from F8 onwards – but still it looks pretty sharp.
Just to warn Amazon image upload produces very poor quality images – they look A LOT better in the original. So don’t be put off by the fact the images look terrible!
Calling it feature packed is an understatement! In fact so many features its overwhelming. I bought the The Friedman Archives Guide to the Sony RX-10 IV book and Photographer’s Guide to the Sony DSC-RX10 IV: Getting the Most from Sony’s Advanced Digital Camera. The second is like the manual Sony should include for free – it explains all the menus very well but not general use. The first book a better guide to getting the most out of the camera.
Of course you don’t need to use all the features but treat as a point and shoot.
Anyway early days and a lot of learning to do – but so far very impressed!
A superb camera and a good price from Amazon. What can I say …. for me it is perfect having the ability to zoom clearly to 600mm. Battery life could be better but I always carry a spare with me so not too much of an issue. The zoom is very smooth and the image stabilising works very well even at long zoom range. I have not tested everything this camera will do yet but it will do a lot more than I require anyway, The build quality is superb and has a lovely weighty feel to it. I did not know this when I bought it but the camera is actually weatherproof as well which will come in handy on rainy days in Scotland. The only possible negative I can see is if you are using the focus / aperture rings on manual they are a bit close to the camera body and unless you have small fingers this could cause some difficulty. All in all a superb camera with a brilliant lens and very well made.
Awesome camera – quite big for a bridge camera but full frame and incredible zoom
has to be crammed in somewhere. As good as any DSLR. The purist would say it can’t
possibly be, because you cant change the lens – that’s the point of a bridge camera, so
if your a photo enthusiast but not an anorak you don’t have to carry a suitcase with all
the other attachments/lenses attributable with a DSLR, but can still take fantastic “snaps”.
Some reviews criticise the menu but I’ve always had Sony cameras so am pretty used to
it by now.
Bought this camera for safari to Namibia and Botswana. Really pleased with the performance – great balance of reach, quality and size.
I would never have carried a heavy DSLR and long lens on all the activities we did.
The Sony was with me at all times and delivered some great photos and memories.
Really an excellent camera for the lazy photographer as well an enthusiast. Great lens which performs wonders..Should call this camera the one piece wonder. All in one kit for going anywhere.. Great for for travelling photographer too.
