5*. Long use, easy to focus, clear picture, high brightness but also able to make it very dim and still be able to use it, also able to adjust picture qualities to make it blue light friendly then along with blue light glasses there is essentially 0% blue light exposure.
Overall this is an excellent projector that stands out from all of the other projectors I looked at at this price range.
We have only used this once or twice, but my 12 year old daughter was able to set it up and get it working without our involvement and it works a charm. Perfect for movie nights at home and compact enough to fit in a handbag and take with on holidays. Sound isn’t bad either. Happy with our purchase.
Thanks to Amazon I had occassion to get few projectors, compare them and send back these which I did not like.
This one was on my mind as first but due to reviews I got some other first and I should listen to my guts.
Projector’s fan is very quiet, pocket size, connecting to my phone’s wifi with no problem. Easy to set up, great solution with a leveling handle. Possible to drop image from very close.
Minus is remote control. Got it for my daughter’s room, plugged fire stick to it and works all great.
Happy of buy, exactly what I wanted.
Apart from losing your mind when you think you’ve lost the remote, the “JBL” speakers being tinny, and the brightness being only really good for a dark room, clarity is great for 1080p and it’s very versatile in terms of flexibility for connecting to it. I’ve even hooked up an Xbox One to it and had a pretty good experience playing split screen Gears 5.
I got this projector with a huge discount. Great deal!
It’s so compact that I can put my whole TV set into a small box.
(Amazon Firestick and HDMI Cable bought separately)
The sound and the image are nice, characters can be clearly shown
It would be better if a USB charger plug is provided (took me a long time to get one)
The buttons on the remote are quite hard to press…
Other than these issues, it’s a very good product that you can bring it anywhere with ease
First off, am I chuffed to have a nice little projector gadget that’s turned my bedroom into a cinema – yes! Am I also gutted it’s turned out to be a bit more of a faff than I’d anticipated – also yes. I got the projector on a Black Friday deal for 165.. so based on that the brightness and picture quality is absolutely great. The sound is also fine, if you’re on your own, as soon as you have a few other people around and a bit of background noise I can imagine you’d want to turn it up a notch but can’t. How I hoped it would work is that I’d just hitch my phone up to it over Bluetooth and airplay and off you go – no wires. The phone connects fine to the projector.. but in my experience airplay lags the sound/images and you end up constantly downgrading the playback quality. First upgrade – 50 for a lightening to AVI connect for my phone. Not the projector’s fault. Then I hoped to Bluetooth a speaker to it to beef the sound up. The Bluetooth connects to the projector but then you can’t play images at the same time? You can download a limited selection of apps from the software – Netflix, iPlayer etc, but you’ll need to connect a mouse to the projector to click and select. Sky Go is not an option and from phone/ipad will NOT be playable over mirroring.. purchased yet another cable, thunderbolt to HDMI for my laptop. Now I can connect the speaker to my laptop and ‘Sky Go’ from there. So I have everything set up how I like it.. but what started as a portable, pocket sized gadget now has more cables and gizmos attached than a fairground!! I’d intended to use it as a space saving, energy saving TV replacement on my narrow boat, but now will be charging the surplus gadgets as well so it’s not quite worked as intended. However, the charge lasts about 1.5 hours. So if you are a Netflix user, or have a fire stick etc. and want it for occasional use such as when camping, you’ll be able to travel much lighter. As said, maybe I was expecting too much and should have done my homework on streaming limitations a bit better, but just so you don’t hit the same issues!! Regardless I’ll be keeping the projector and enjoying using it.
Contract cannot adjust
Battery is okay for normal film
Many App install no okay even use Apk file
Mobile type c connection is delay
Only use for notebook projector it is ok
Good picture quality
Dreadful user manual that needed to be downloaded as was not provided with device.
Unclear instructions and not all cables provided to link to other devices- had to be bought separately
This was my first foray into projectors, so to be honest I didn’t know what to expect.
I did a fair bit of research beforehand-I didn’t want anything expensive as I am only planning on using it for digital decorations (Halloween projections etc), but honestly I love this little projector!
It’s extremely simple to set up-just take it out of the box and enter your wi-fi code, and plug a USB with your files on, and it’s ready to go.
The picture is sharp, and the colours look great.
I haven’t used it for watching films or TV (NETFLIX is already on the projector), so I can’t really review it as a film critic, but it’s perfect for what I want it for.
This is a great little bit of kit but..
Gets really hot. The fans can’t cope.
The remote is clunky to say the least, I didn’t like it.
Sound is ok given its size as they say but still very poor overall.
Great little thing for occasional use and travelling but that’s it.
I like it is portable the things I dislike about it it stopped working after about 40 hours of use
Update
Thanks to Amazon and the 2 years guarantee on it Amazon team has replaced it with a new one it was an easy process let’s hope this new one would last and it would have been perfect if it had USB c charging port rather then micro usb port although it is good portable projector I prefer the one with the USBC charging port
Like the one with the WiFi I wonder why view sonic would not have this one with USBC it would have been perfect anand
The projector is good in low light, if you want to use it outside you will need to wait until the sun has set. I’ve set it up to play streaming services and Nintendo switch in a gazebo during the summer. It did a good job.
I bought this because it said there was a ceiling mount option but I cant find one.
Everything else about it though is great!
This was my first time buying a projector and I’m thrilled with my choice. The View Sonic M1+ is neat, compact and very portable. Visually the item is eye catching, modern and sleek. When holding the projector you can feel that the item is of a solid build quality. The built in speaker is perfect for a mini movie night with friends as the max volume is more than enough to create a movie atmosphere. The sound is crisp and clear when the projector is up and running. The brand Harmen/Karem have lived up to their reputation and done a great job with sound quality. Interacting with the home screen was very easy to navigate and downloading apps such as Netflix and Spotify was done with ease. The remote responds quickly to touch and its button layout made negotiating the app store very easy. Overall this is a great starting point for someone who is thinking of buying a projector. The only thing I would creteak is the price. If you see this item on discou to, I would recommend for you to purchase. Overall, super projector.
Pros
Small compact and the picture is clear not 4K but still awesome, the built in speaker is also great I’ve not needed to go louder than 5 out of 30 the size of the screen goes from small to very large I currently have it set up in my bedroom at 67″ and it’s brilliant.
Cons..
There is a built in battery which last 2.5 hours if you are trying to charge it while using it the battery will keep draining but once it is fully charged it will work fine
I bought the viewsonic M1 mini for use in the van.
The main reason for the purchase was I wanted a pocket projector that could be powered via USB as I don’t plan on adding a mains supply to my van.
I’ve had a 15min test (as I was giddy) in the van (with no screen) using my fire TV stick. I had them both powered from a power bank no problem. And setup is super easy, barely an inconvenience.. the auto keystone works amazingly well, and adjusts the screen quickly and accurately.
I would love it to be 1080p or even 720 but I’ll be honest it genuinely does not matter for something like this which is intended to be pulled out on the very odd occasion. That being said the picture quality is surprisingly good! And over delivers in colour, sharpness and depth. You wouldn’t really notice it isn’t ‘HD’ maybe we’ve been spoilt?!
The audio is equally as sufficient for the intended application. Not sure what it would sound like outside? Or turned up a lot higher? But for keeping it down in the van I’m more than happy!
What is an added bonus is the fan noise! Or lack there of! It’s a super quiet unit (barely noticeable) and is exactly what you want for a cave!
Overall I’m super pleased! And as a projector I couldn’t be happier. Will recommend to anyone. I just need to work out how the screen is going to work now and whether to mount it to the van ceiling or not?!
This is a very nicely designed unit. For the price it promises good performance. The negatives for me were that weakness in the ‘apps’ and streaming facilities meant that the WiFi capability was pretty much useless, so I just used a chromecast dongle instead (meaning the projector WiFi was even more of a waste of space). The other issue is focus; the focus ring is stepped and the best focus always seemed to be between steps, also focus was not consistent across the image and the focus changed over time & so needed tweaking and lastly the focus sometimes popped in and out.
In summary, it’s a lovely package which does not quite deliver on its potential.
Great connection to Netflix and Bluetooth sound system. The image is quite good and adjustable. Haven’t managed to increase the size of the subtitles.
Might be worth upgrading to the next model if you’re looking for higher battery life. The size of the projected image is also dependent on the position of the projector and not convenient at times.
My thoughts mirrors other reviewers – a good all round package
Pros:
* Battery is good
* Sound is good
* Tripod mount underneath
* USB C Charging as well as it’s own native power brick.
* Wifi
* Can be used with Airplay
Cons:
* Native resolution is low WVGA (854 x 480) – really noticeable with text on a large screen
* No 3D keystoning (only does vertical), so if the projector is at the side, it won’t compensate.
* Lumens output is very low (300), so can only use this in very dark rooms.
Issues encountered:
* I could not connect my macbook pro to it successfully via HDMI. It kept on switching between resolutions 2400 x 1080p and one other resolution, so it would continuously flicker.
* You cannot copy folderes across from a micro SD to the internal storage. You have to select individual files (or multi select them) and set the destination as a folder.
If you can live with the cons, it’s not a bad package.
I bought this instead of a tv for a caravan. I don’t watch regular broadcast tv so just wanted a device I could watch streaming services or downloaded film/tv shows on.
It works great & we use the blinds in the caravan as a screen, or if we have the awning up, the side of the caravan. My son has used the inside of the inner tent & uses it to play his play station through.
I link my iPhone via hdmi using a certified Apple hdmi connector & it works fine.
It’s not HD or Dolby so sometimes you do have to download alternative versions of downloads for it to play through the projector but all in all we’re extremely happy with the projector. It takes up no room, a tv would.
The sound is great, the image is great & the automatic keystone is easy for plug & play. You can manually adjust it if you’re viewing in a weird angle to suit your own viewing desire.
I’m a little worried I’m going to lose the remote as it’s small & the unit is controlled by it alone, meaning if the remote packs in you’re stuck. I wish it had buttons on the projector itself but I guess the more expensive versions have that.
For the money it’s great as long as you’re not overly hung up on picture quality being Ultra HD quality.
Over all I’m pretty impressed with the m1+,,
In the pic it’s at about 75inches in a room that’s not very dark and the colours are all fairly bright, with a good contrast between light and dark! The speaker is actually pretty incredible, loud but clear even at top range!
I’m finding using a usb stick the easiest way to watch things, I have an iPhone and doesn’t seem to play Netflix or YouTube when mirroring. The Netflix app that you can download onto the m1+ does have a few flaws as you can’t use the search bar, only scroll through programs, sometimes it won’t let you select something to watch either. Although it’s a bit of a let down, I’m sure I can live without it! (If anyone does have away of making Netflix work could you comment tho please) the remote isn’t lit either but I’m sure I’ll learn the buttons fairly quickly!
Great little product, will be taking it on holiday with me soon, looking forward to watching it outside!
I would give 5* if the Apps on this device worked better with remote control, but it is near on impossible to navigate around Amazon Prime & Netflix with the remote.
That said when we attached our Prime Stick this device is amazing superb picture and sound
This projector is a quality product with good picture and features. The automatic screen adjustment works brilliantly and the charge lasts for ages. I used the powered USB port to run a chromecast and it worked well and was incredibly pleased with the sound quality.
The after sales for this product isn’t the best as I was looking for a second charger and a car charger so I could use the projector in my camper van because it is a very good all in one unit with the sound and battery. I couldn’t find an official one so if anyone wants to get one an alternative is an Acer Iconia Tab W7 compatible charger. The company Power 4 Laptops does both a car and mains supply and it does fit all be it a little tight and is the right amps and volts.
Very impressed with this projector. I was looking for a projector that I could take away on holiday that was very compact and worked of the grid (ac free)
This will project for 2 hours on battery alone so that covers most blockbuster movies.
It has a built in speaker which is really good but I have been able to use its bluetooth output to transmit to 2 bose sound link micros that will broadcast in stereo sound. Awesome. Just watched Armageddon last night with the Mrs. Superb. Keeping the Mrs happy is always a good thing
I have several movies on mp4 and put these onto USB stick which can be plugged directly into m1+
I have also plugged in my amazon firestick into the M1+ and this works really easily with machine so would highly recommend using firestick with the M1+. To maximise battery life for your M1+ then I would suggest that you plug your firestick into a USB powerbank. I have used my Anker power bank to power my firestick. This will mean you can watch your full movie without running down the battery power on your M1+
The M1+ is only suitable for use at nighttime or dimmed conditions to view content. Until battery technology improves then this is as awesome piece of kit.
I have bought a portable screen to use with this.
Nice little bit of kit. But the WiFi/Bluetooth is a little disappointing. You can only do screen mirroring over the same WiFi network which I doubt very much will work in hotels, which was what we wanted it for. Bluetooth is audio only. It’ll be great with the Switch though.
So if you don’t have access to WiFi where you are going, get an HDMI cable.
So I’m returning it and getting the cheaper version without WiFi and Bluetooth. The Bluetooth is basically making it a speaker not a projector, and the WiFi access password length is limited to 20 characters which means I literally cannot connect it to my home network at all. Not worth the extra money.
EDIT This review is of the M1 Mini projector with Bluetooth. It sometimes appears on other projectors.
Not only is this projector very good, the customer service from Viewsonic is outstanding. First the product. A really compact lightweight portable projector with excellent connectivity. We use a Firestick directly into the HDMI to deliver all the usual streaming services. Picture quality is decent. Impressive for the size and better the darker the room. Sound quality is excellent. The projector itself is quiet. Now customer service. Nearly two years after purchasing, the projector stopped working. An email to Viewsonic and their tech department called me back quickly. When troubleshooting didn’t help, they offered to collect the projector from my home, repair it and return it at no cost to me. No hassle for me. Within 10 days the projector was back and working good as new. Cannot praise Viewsonic customer service highly enough. Fantastic.
This is a nice portable projector to use in a restricted environment, like professional or private meetings, in a dark environment.
Do not expect to use it for a classroom or professional training, as its contrast is weak on daylight conditions or long distances (more than 3mts).
But its case of use, global build quality and materials, beauty and usefulness make it a very good choice for those of us that need to project presentations frequently at small groups.
Happy with it.
The device is slick in design, expected the sound quality to be better just because it’s hardman kardon branded. The stand is good but when you connect alot of inputs it gets wobbly. Wish it had autofocus to compliment autokeystone. WiFi connection and Bluetooth are too elementary for a seamless experience I wouldn’t recommend using them .overall good design and nice experience but there is plenty of room for improvement.
I initially purchased this projector for showing educational films and power point type presentations at university. I chose it for the compact size, the name I knew (it wasn’t some strange unknown Chinese brand), the audio features, overall brightness and the connectivity options. It also had some good reviews.
When I first received it and set it up, I quickly realized that the resolution was too low for doing presentations. At 60″ the text is legible but blocky, and photos and other graphics are similarly unsophisticated. Considering that I had bought it for this purpose, my first instinct was to send it back, but I kept hold of it for a few days to look into other uses. We started to use it to watch tv and movies and found it was actually very watchable. With video the low resolution isn’t so noticeable, I guess because it’s a moving picture. The colours are bright and vivid, and the high contrast ratio makes even dark scenes fairly distinct. It works best in total darkness, but is also good in low light situations, not much use in a day-lit room. We now use it as a second TV in the bedroom, and during this lockdown period it’s getting a lot of use!
For portable use the onboard Harmon-Cardon system is loud enough, and reasonable quality, like a $30 blue tooth speaker. The stand is useable as long as you’re careful not to knock it off something, or trip over the power cable and bring it crashing to the ground, which I have done already (still worked afterwards).
At home I use a photography tripod for stability, and play the audio through my amp.
The amount of input options is great, and I especially like the micro sd and USB readers. I load them up with content and then it just plays out of the unit, recognizing most formats. My macbook pro and android phone can both wirelessly connect to ‘cast’ content, but make sure you have a good wireless router, mine is ancient and can’t really keep up. I’ve not managed to use the usb C port as I don’t have a compatible device, and the HDMI connecter works as you’d expect for connecting laptop etc. I’m sure there are other ways to connect that I haven’t discovered yet. The unit connects to the Wifi network easily and can run apps, which I haven’t really bothered with. Remote works well by just pointing at the screen, or the front of the unit.
The main negative point for me is the focus wheel, it’s very sensitive, fiddly and really difficult to get the focus bang on. My unit also slightly loses focus over time, so during an ad break you have to fiddle with it. Also when you power on the unit the focus needs readjusting even though the projector and screen are in the same position. This is something Viewsonic need to sort out for the next gen.
Overall: Seems well built and is so far stable and reliable, it’s great fun for portable cinema/TV use and is small enough to throw in a bag for travel. Also good for light home use. The resolution of 480p leaves a bit to be desired, but for the price this is basically what you get. Pay more if you want 720 or 1080p sharpness. I kept the projector and use it everyday, actually grown quite fond of it.
Tip: First thing to do is upgrade the firmware to latest version.
Great portability and sound is exceptional for any projector let alone a portable one. Its obvious that the darker the room the more you’ll get the best from the image but it does struggle with more than a small amount of ambient light. Throw distance isn’t bad so you can get a good size from 2.5 metres. Good connections including USB C and memory card reader, plus built it storage. Managed to play all the standard formats I tested for films on USB stick and USB powers firestick or similar devices. Battery is very good, I got 2.5 hours in full brightness and 5 in battery saving, so no issues using outside or away from home. Overall a decent device if you’re looking for portability, good sound and using in dark settings.
This item has a wide array of connectivity including hdmi input, aux output and USB. We have the M1+ connected to a soundbar via aux cable as the on board speakers are very tinny. We have a hdmi switch with NowTv and PS4 connected into the projector via this method. The keystone config is more than you could ask for and allows you to project an image pretty much anywhere! The focus ring is very sensitive and takes a bit of tweaking to get the image as clear as possible. As per the photos of how we have stood up the projector, we can project an image of about 80 inches onto the ceiling above the bed, which makes the comfort value of this item well worth the price and perfect for watching movies and tv shows at night time. The swivel stand allows for a very portable projector that can be used anywhere! Although for the price you pay, even though the resolution is standard 480p definition I was expecting the image quality to be better but cannot fault the vibrancy of the colours in the image. If you value comfort over image quality, this item is well worth the price tag. I will be looking into a more higher definition solution in the future. If you are curious about the M1+ I would recommend giving it a go as long as you keep in mind the standard resolution.
For the price we can’t expect more than that, don’t have the same image quality of a television or a big projector also it’s far to be bad have some definition, it’s more than enough to have a good cinema experience, the sound it’s pretty good, the battery when you see movies it’s up to during about 2h hours if you use for show slides may you can enjoy the 6 hours. The remote control it’s a mess, but I need to change the battery of it, to see if that it’s my problem, I’m still using the original pass 7 months. In general it’s a good purchase, has a good design as well, I recommend.
Build quality quality;
Excellent, very nicely made.
Sound quality;
Excellent, nice and loud with decent base.
Built in media player;
To be honest it is a bit hit or miss, the main issue I had was unsupported audio (mkv, vob files tested). Some files, mainly mkv’s at 1080p didn’t play very smoothly. M2TS files would not play for me.
Software, user interface;
Has lots of settings, can adjust brightness, sound etc. Selecting sources is straight forward.
Apps;
It comes with Aptoide preinstalled. Sadly there is very little choice in terms of apps. I installed BBC iPlayer but it would work as the app needs a mouse.
Bringhtness;
I was a little disappointed with the projector’s performance in a room with low light (curtains closed in day time). At night I tested the projector and it was much better, the difference was amazing, I was very impressed with the image and brightness. Each time I tested the projector it was about 6 feet away from the wall/ceiling.
Connectivity;
I connected a 4TB mini HDD and that was picked up straight away, no issues with powering the HDD. A Blu-ray player was connected via the HDMI input, that looked stunning on the projector.
This product is absolutely amazing! The image is so sharp, even when projecting across a room to create a roughly 100 inch image, and the inbuilt speaker is great quality and much louder than the one on our TV. I have used it for wireless video streaming and projected movies from my laptop using the HDMI cable. The visual quality exceeded all expectations and really feels like having a cinema at home, despite just being projected onto a blank white wall. My boyfriend has even used it to play Fifa on with his friends and they loved it.
One final thing that is a really nice feature is the fact that the projector detects the angle of the wall and adapts the image so the image quality is always at its best, no matter what angle the projector is pointing from.
Would absolutely recommend for anyone like me wanting a home cinema room without having to break the bank!
The item is definitely a unique design which can persuade many at a glance. Small, light and relatively quiet. The image quality for short distance is satisfactory. There are two shortcomings tho. One is the claimed 120000:1 contrast ratio which is not only untrue but rather unrealistic for this device at this price range. Another is the brightness, especially when projecting on bigger screens or in medium or above light levels. If you are happy with these, you are unlikely returning this item as it comes in very nice packing and definitely does the job to a good extent.
I bought this then returned it the following day to buy a smaller pico project that has wifi and runs on Android 7.1. Do I regret my choice? Yes, Here’s why…
– Sound quality is super crisp and so incredibly clear, I live near the main road with lots of cars going past and I could hear every single word of a lecture I was listening to on volume level 3 (this goes unto 10) with my windows open, with my current pico projector by Yuafey I can barely hear anything on full volume even when my window is shut, my only choice is to use a bluetooth headset/speaker
– Picture quality is super sharp & bright even on battery saver mode, I really cannot praise this company enough for achieving such great and consistent result in such a small device
– I used this device for 5.5 hours on one charge while on battery saver mode. I watch a few films during daylight with the curtains open and could see the projection just fine
Here’s what I wish the device had…
– wifi connectivity is a must for me (the only real option is to connect Chromecast, fire stick etc. to make it a smart system
– Android OS 7.1 (or latest version) – that would really have made a big difference
Again, I really liked the device, the sound quality is just amazing and I can’t praise ViewSonic enough for this. I will probably consider buying this again if it drops to 200. The speakers on its own on this device is probably worth at least 150 (yes it really is that good).
The Viewsonic M1 is a pretty good all-in-one package and it isn’t difficult to list a number of its great features.
1. The picture is generally very good. It is sharp and in good focus across the screen.
2. Image brightness and colour seem to be very uniform across the image.
3. A lot of image adjustments are available, some on-screen (i.e. the image can be adjusted while watching: colour, hue, sharpness and 3-d functions only).
4. The on-board sound is convincing and loud enough for me. No need for additional speakers.
5. The rotating stand works very well and is quite stable even with cables attached. It holds the projector at any angle without slipping, is easily and rapidly adjustable and allows a lot of versatility in where to project (including the ceiling). It does rely on standing on a level surface, but there is a tripod mount where this is difficult. Amongst othe places, I’ve had it stood stably on a cushion tray at the end of the bed. The auto turn on/off when the stand is rotated is a neat feature.
6. Rapid set-up is helped by the automatic keystone, which works very well.
7. The battery life between charges is long. The claimed six hours in battery saving mode seems about right and you can get through a movie at high brightness levels. The battery also charges while projecting; some don’t. The battery is a boon in such a portable package but also a possible drawback as it could well limit the device life. It is not user-replaceable and might not be cost-effective to return for service replacement, even if this is possible. Unfortunately, the specifications don’t give any idea of the life-expectancy of the battery, possibly understandably as it might depend on how it is used. It is worth asking yourself whether you really need this level of self-contained operation – it is surprisingly useful though.
8. There is a useful charge level indicator on the back of the device.
9. The USB port can power a Fire stick or other streaming device (drawing up to 1 amp), even in battery mode, making a self-contained streaming unit.
10. The cooling fan noise is very subdued. It is inaudible to me until the unit is about foot from my ear, and my hearing isn’t particularly poor.
11. The remote sensor is on the front of the device and responds well when the remote is directed at the projection screen, rather than the projector, at least at the distances where this short-throw projector is likely to be used. This is much more practical and flexible than having the sensor on the back where cables get in the way of the beam. The remote works well and is reasonably ergonomic.
12. There is a good array of modern inputs, including USB-C.
13. You get some useful items in the box: a soft case and USB-C cable.
14. There is a native Office suite on-board, with functions like scrolling and slide movement via the remote. The projector is bright enough to make a 40-60 inch presentation in subdued light, i.e. in enough light to take notes by, rather than in total darkness. Total darkness is best for films and TV though (unless you are happy with a very small screen).
15. Given that the device can easily be picked up and waved about the automatic lamp shutoff could be quite useful. The projector could also be used at close quarters for (say) tracing artwork where the shutoff could save your eyesight – or possibly be a little annoying depending on how close to your hand or surrounding surfaces get to the sensor. In this case, there is an option to suspend auto-shutoff.
16. The construction seems high quality. It is reassuringly solid.
17. It is backed by a reputable company with a support team and a 2-year warranty, though for some reason this is a year less than that in the US. The product is firmware upgradeable by a not-too-difficult process should any further upgrades be made.
18. The instructions say it is 3-d compatible. I’ve put this last as I probably won’t use it.
Doubtless there are other features that I have not yet noticed. The projector may be one of the higher priced WVGA offerings, but it is a solid, chic-looking all-in-one solution. That being said there are bound to be compromises in putting such a package together. The following are some acceptable compromises (or non-essential improvements).
1. The device really could do with brightness and contrast controls in the on-screen display (OSD). You can control hue, sharpness and saturation from the OSD while watching video. Adding brightness/contrast would be very useful a device such as this. The reason is that ambient light affects the picture a lot and you end up wanting to adjust these more often than on a normal TV. It is a real hassle to have get out of the video, get into menu mode, guess what brightness and contrast are needed (a tonal panel at the bottom left helps a bit), get out of the menus, back into video and then repeat the process if it not quite right. There are also three ways of adjusting brightness, which introduces further complication here.
2. There is a faint circle of stray light well outside the picture area. I think that it is scatter from the case around the lens. Baffling this area might help — but then it would not look so chic. It isn’t a problem really.
3. The focus wheel is quite sensitive; a millimetre or so can take it off focus. This appears to be a common issue with the small focus wheels on portable devices. I didn’t have any problems but perhaps not easy for those with slight unsteadiness.
4. The PowerPoint version installed is not 100% compatible so you don’t always see what was originally generated on a PC. Native PowerPoint is a handy feature though, and the occasional reformatting is easy to work round by suitable preparation and rehearsal. There may be compatibility issue with the other Office packages – I haven’t checked. But it is certainly better to have them than not.
5. As with all DLP projectors with a single DMD chip, there are sometimes rainbow artifacts if you are sensitive to them (I am, but many are not). It is difficult to get away from this.
6. Because the projector is at its best in the dark, an illuminated remote would be useful. You eventually memorise which buttons are which, and fortunately the OSD button is the big one in the middle, but there is some frustration beforehand.
7. There is a headphone socket but no on-board Bluetooth for remote audio. However, the on-board speakers are very good and remote speakers can be connected, if desired, via the Bluetooth on any attached streaming device (e.g. Firestick).
8. Though it handles all sorts of inputs, the native resolution of this device is WVGA (854 x 480). However, the picture quality is very good and, apart from a very few instances, I can’t say that I have noticed the lack of higher resolution.
There are also a couple of compromises that take a bit more getting used to (for me, anyway).
1. Projected images are surrounded by a light outer frame (a few inches in width on a 50 inch picture) that makes it look like you are watching a TV with a greyish bezel as shown in the attached screenshot. This frame does not keystone with the picture, with the result that at moderate tilts you have the appearance of watching a movie/TV show on a large trapezoidal TV set. It is particularly noticeable during dark scenes, such as the example; the light ones tend to swamp with light reflected round the room it or at least focus attention back to the rectangular movie area. Projecting onto a screen sized to the picture area, rather than a wall, would remove or alleviate this, and it can also be made less noticeable in some circumstances by setting an appropriate picture brightness. I’m told that this frame is an unavoidable side-effect of the DMD chip in DLP projectors, but it is the first time I’ve noticed it. I have another, otherwise inferior, portable that does not show it.
2. Despite the claimed contrast ratio, shadow detail is not great. For example, the dark scenes in Sweeney Todd (and it is mostly dark scenes) weren’t handled particularly well no matter what adjustments I made. Darks are difficult for projectors, but it is possible to do a bit better in a portable format.
Notwithstanding these issues, if you want something to watch the football at night on a big screen or give presentations to small groups in subdued lighting, with the convenience of needing no mains power, then you’ve come to the right place.
Keep an eye on this as they do drop the price from time to time (at the time of this review – Oct 2018 – price dropped to 248). Absolutely brilliant for home use – bright, sharp images, excellent sound from Harman/Kardon speakers, compact remote control, rechargeable battery with good battery life, completely portable projector. So glad I purchased this rather than cheaper models – this is simply an excellent product for the price.
For Apple users, get the official certified lightning to HDMI adapter (see my separate review) – bite the bullet and fork out 50 for it as no other adapter will work. Once you get it, it connects and streams seamlessly from iPhone and iPad. As at end of October 2018, I’ve streamed Netflix, Amazon Prime, BT Sport, Apple TV, BBC iPlayer, YouTube plus loads of other apps. As another reviewer has said, Sky Go does not stream due to licensing restrictions.
Only slight cons I feel worth mentioning:
– there is a bit of light bleed around the edges of the projector
– some people may find the fan slightly noisy (although I find that once the audio is playing, it’s not that noticeable)
– the stand doesn’t quite stand true so you may need to adjust it
None of the above mentioned cons materially change the experience for me – the overall quality and functionality of the product at this price is amazing.
Rule no.1 do your research. Get a balanced view of the product. Very few things are perfect. The closer they get to perfection the more they will cost. If it is cheap ask why?
My 2 downsides for this projector are resolution and lumens.
Once you know and accept this you will be amazed by the value this offering presents.
The 2 negatives may seem a deal breaker but this was my approach.
Resolution is low. Not HD. HD is incredible but I feel when the movie is rolling and the action commences there is no time to count pixels. Pixels are really noticeable when movie is paused.
Lumens. You cannot watch during they datime. This projector performs better the darker it is. You need to block out the light. Once you know and understand this and take measure (bloack out curtains etc.) The problem no longer exists. Sit back enjoy movie/tv.
Where else can you get 100 inch movie for this price. The sound delivery is excellent from Harmon Kardon. We don’t have a massive lounge.
It’s portability because of inbuilt battery is another huge plus for us.
Our first one stopped working within 14 days which was concerning. Amazon replaced in 2 days so cannot get much better service than that. They said this was first faulty return. Fingerscrossed our replacement lives strong. I would not want to lose it. We don’t have a TV which frees up space in the lounge area.
Tv’s tend to go on just for the sake of it. Projectors do require a bit of set up.
That’s all folks…
