I bought this to replace a broken drive in my ReadyNas 204. It works well and without excess noise.

purchased couples of these to replace the fautly 6TB Red drive. I found it pain to restore 6TB data at once so I decided to replace it with couple smaller drives instead. all drives working well on the synology nas DS920+ for couple months already and I never turn the nas off.

The drive is perfectly fine, it’s silent and doesn’t get too hot.
I’m using it with a Raspberry Pi 3B+ as a local media storage box for movies, music, backups etc.

However, for a better price, at around 90, you can get the model with 256MB of cache (WD40EFPX) directly from WD UK.

Also, this model is incorrectly labelled on Amazon, it’s the 128MB cache version, not 64MB, model number WD40EFZX.

It definitely seems to sound louder than an identical WD Pro 18tb I purchased 3 weeks ago for some reason.
There is a noticeable rattle sound when the drive is in read/write operation, whereas the other drive is silent. Installed in a PC case it is not so audible.
However, it is operating perfectly, and I am not expecting any reliability issues in the future.

I’ve had the drive for a few weeks now and it is absolutely performing to expectations.

It is in a Synology DS720 NAS with an equivalent Seagate 4GB drive to mirror content.

So far I have been able to backup the files from my older NAS without any issue and additional files from my network. The NAS reports the drives as operational and working effectively.

Hopefully this will continue – I will edit if any problems occur.

Purchased to extend storage on a Synology NAS – appear to be working perfectly. Time will tell I guess. They appear to be at least as performant as my previous pair of NAS drives (one of which finally started to fail after many years of constant service).

Bought this for my NAS and works like a dream. Very expensive and you lose over 1TB of space due to how WD calculate data space. They use 1000mb and should be using 1024.

I really like WD drives for my QNap, really easy to install slide old one out put new one in and away it goes and rebuilds itself.
That said the reason for my 4 stars is that one of my drives recently failed on me after 2 years. I would have expected them to last longer however such is life.

I bought this hard drive as I’ve had good experience with Western Digital spinning drives before. It is used in a normal computer setup, not a NAS, as the computer is on 24/7, so the hard drive is better build to stay on 24/7 compared to a regular hard drives. It sounds quiet, the seek is barely audible and only then if the case of your computer cover is open. As for heat, when I copied over my few TB of data to the new drive, the drive was warm, but not burning hot to the touch. The 5400 spin rate is enough for my needs, as it’s mostly to behave like a desktop drive (not for the operating system), not something where access speed is critical – but it’s not a slow drive!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI am running four of these drives in my PC connected to an Adaptec RAID controller. As these drives spin a little bit slower I was expecting transfer rates to suffer, but I was pleasantly surprised by how fast these drives are.

And so far, they work as a RAID array flawlessly.

The four I have are installed in a Silverstone four drive hot-swap bay at the front of my computer and I can barely hear them.

I was so impressed with them that I have just purchased another four of them to expand my RAID array even further.

UPDATE. I bought another four of these drives (as mentioned above) and one of them was Dead on Arrival. The system can see it, but it is reported as being 0GB in size with 0GB free space. I have tried this faulty drive on two separate hard drive controllers and get the same result. This isn’t the first time I have had a drive turn up dead on arrival but it is very rare.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe packaging was terrible. Amazon – you should know better than to ship sensitive electronic equipment in book packaging. No protection at all and one end of the package I received wasn’t even closed. Who knows of this HDD had fallen out of its packaging while being tossed around by Royal Mail. Not to mention there was no internal protection like bubble wrap or brown paper packing material to protect it from shocks or drops. Even Western Digital insist on this when you RMA a faulty drive! So why can’t Amazon when shipping a brand new one?
As for the drive it was registered with WD straight away so I could confirm it was in region. I was worried about this after reading other reviews on here, but this has checked out ok. One word of warning to future buyers – make sure you know or check if you need. CMR or SMH drive. For my NAS I definitely needed a CMR drive and the correct item was shipped. 4 Tb resync completed in about 11 hours. So far so good.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIf you want to avoid SMR shingled drives make sure you buy the PLUS version. WD RED are SMR Shingled Drives.
These will work in a NAS if matched with the same in a RAID 1 or 2 array. Personally I would not use them.
WD RED PLUS are CMR conventional tracks, these are the better drives for a rock solid NAS. I have had 2 WD RED CMR older drives in a 2 Bay NAS for over 6 years, quiet and faultless. These have now been transferred to a QNAP 4 BAY NAS along with the 2 new WD RED PLUS drives I have just purchased. As you can see from the photos, the drives are new in original well packaged WD Boxes with suspended holders, silica gel and fixing screws. Once installed you can see from the photos and the SMART info, they are EFRX (CMR) drives with only the 2 hours use they have been in the NAS. All in all very pleased with Amazon and the purchase.

WD RED Plus are CMR Drives best for NAS

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBought 4 of these to populate a new Synology NAS. I’ve used Reds in the past and I’ve only had one of these get flagged as faulty in the many years I have been using them which is pretty good. Plus, I’ve then used that disk in a PC and not had any further error reporting so I reckon it was a fault with the controller rather than the drive.

Very quiet, efficient drives and perfect for NAS or PC storage.

I’ve have 8 of these in a Synology 3612 as a raid 6 array (they’ve been in there since the reds came out, previously was running RE’s which were bullet proof but these are a lot cheaper). On average I need to replace at least one per annum. The earliest I’ve had one fail is at about 17000 hours, so now I’m scrapping them at about 20000 if they’re still running.

Been using this since November – it is being used as part of a Linux Home Server – it has had no downtime yet, and is still quiet as ever.

Perceptibly quieter than the backup drive it replaced in a 2 drive caddy – not NAS just a normal caddy. Read write almost silent, speed seems good. Was dubious about using an NAS spec drive for normal backup but it copied 200GB from previous drive quickly and with no apparent errors. Day to day all performing well. I hope to benefit from the longer MTBF of NAS drives but only time will tell.

This is exactly what to expect from a nas drive. It was easy to install. As simple as pluging it in to the relevant cable in your computer. It was detected by windows and didnt need any complicated installation. It was surprisingly fast for a hdd. And can’t hear it at all when the computer is on. I got this on offer and think it is excellent value for around 100

Bought to replace old WD RED which is faulty now and according to my NAS S.M.A.R.T status it last 5 years and 8 months of non stop use 24/7 of streaming, downloading, backup and web hosting. I had to bite at the price of only 64.99 for 3 Tb of a solid hard drive. I realised that I could not partition the drive easily using windows 10 so I decided to leave it as one big hard drive and just transfer the folders I wanted onto there.
I do not turn my computer off much anyway as I might be downloading over night so this was a really no brainer to me especially now as it has went back up to 107.99

This is an excellent hard drive I already have 5 others and it can survive the post when you get retail packaging as mine got thrown into the porch, seconds after the doorbell rang. As I had to check to see if it is still functional before I could make a claim to Amazon, the drive turned out to be perfect after an extensive testing writing and reading 18 hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Retail packaging is worth the extra money

Already use WD Red in another NAS and have experienced 100% reliability 4 years on from the install. These new ones are for my new QNAP NAS and were as expected easy to install and set-up with no errors detected. This is just an initial review but fully expect long use. These WD Red drives are simply a bargain when purchased via Amazon Warehouse!

I have always gone for the WD option when choosing a HDD and have yet to be disappointed.

  38. Data Bridge Market Research says:

Bought the retail option deliberately. No arguments over warranty then (a possibility with OEM). Bought 4 drives @ 3tb each to use in a qnap nas. Well protected and quick to install. I have had no problems so far and the drives perform well. Only longer term use will prove the reliability but no reason to think they should do well. Worth the little extra for peace of mind. All registered on the WD support website with full warranty.

  39. Anonymous says:

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersDesigned for NAS storage and an excellent warranty support but make sure you read the small print – this particular unit is supported by WD support team but there are some seller who are selling units that are out of region for warranty support.

The warranty allows you to send back the unit to WD and get a replacement but everything is tied to a serial number and the serial number must be within a region of warranty. You have to register this disk drive with WD but once registered, you get full disk support like replacements.

So ask before you buy because it is the warranty support that makes this a valuable drive.

I love WD products- their hard drives have never failed on me and that is why I invested in their Red series for my Synology NAS to back up my precious documents.

The read/write speeds are decent enough that it would not impact your performance. I get around 50MB/s to 100MB/s depending on the files transferred, and they don’t make much noise unless you write a lot of data to it instantly.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI’ve purchased ten of these drives over the course of the last few years. I normally purchase them in pairs, as I use one for a backup each time. I buy them from Amazon direct each time. They have all worked first time straight out of the box, five of them are pretty much in continuous use throughout the day as my wife uses them for her design business.

I tend to purchase the Retail Kit box if I can (price dependent compared to the OEM box), as the Retail Kit box comes with a 3 year warranty, whereas the OEM box only comes with a 12 month warranty.

You can check the warranty period on your drive, just do an internet search for “WD warranty status” and find the page from Western Digital that allows you to check the status by simply inserting the drive serial number into their status checker box.

All the drives I have purchased have come with the correct warranty period.

Overall I’m very pleased with this drive for my needs, I shall continue without hesitation to purchase more as and when I need them.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBought 2 of these for my new NAS. I have installed them in the last month. They were immediately recognised by the NAS (these HDDs were on the manufactuer’s recommended list) and I was soon up and running. It is too early to say whether they are reliable but no errors are showing up so far, and they are performing as expected. I would rate them 5-star if they were still performing like this in 5 years’ time! Recommended for the Synology 216J.

I figured the Red 6TB NAS hard disk was best for price vs. storage size. I opted for the retail box over the OEM, as the retail packaging would give more protection over the OEM (though hard drive packaging has improved over the years). Wasn’t a lot more expensive.

It’s currently taking up one bay in a TerraMaster F2-220 2-Bay NAS Drive Enclosure. It and the WD Red are performing perfectly, no lag, no heat or noise issues. It has replaced and consolidated data spread over three Samsung 2TB and one Seagate 4TB drive, all of which are working perfectly, yet none of which had been backed up.

Now all I need to do is save up for another 6TB, ‘cos that’s an awful lot of eggs in one basket at the moment.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBought these to upgrade my QNAP NAS, replacing a couple of 3TB WD ‘Red’ drives in the process. It’s tempting fate I know, but I’ve been very pleased with the reliability of WD drives (I know, six or so drives over seven years isn’t statistically meaningful…). I was also guided in my choice of ‘Red’ drives by the HDD compatibility guide published by QNAP. Incidentally, unlike some other reviewers, I was able to register my drives with WD without any region-related problems.
    The drives arrived well-packaged.
[Edit July 2020]: The first drive failed in October 2019, the second last night – July 2020. Both failures are of the ‘ticking on start up’ variety so there’s no chance of recovering any data (which fortunately is already backed up). I bought a replacement in October 2019 which turned out to be an EFAX type (SMR) so I’ve got that issue also to contend with. The drives were used in a QNAP NAS in an office environment and not (AFAIK) highly stressed. Very disappointing (circa 133 per year they’ve cost me) but what’s the alternative? I’ve had very poor longevity with Seagate drives, so won’t touch them. At least they didn’t fail at the same time and I could rebuild my RAID 1 without data loss or interruption.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI was slightly put off by some of the negative reviews found when looking at drives on Amazon, but decided I’d bite the bullet. I bought the 3TB, retail boxed variant. Conversely to some reviews, inside the usual Amazon box, there was an additional cardboard box, inside which was the original WD box, sealed with the drive inside – I found this more than adequate, and there was almost no chance of the drive having been damaged in transit.

Again, I was apprehensive when registering the HDD on the WD website, but I found this simple and the process took a couple of minutes.

I will update this review should I find any issue with the drive in the future.

As a final point, note this drive does not come with any SATA cables. I had several spare, so this wasn’t an issue.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI researched this drive as well as others before deciding on this one. My reseasrch started because I had a Seagate 3TB external that failed. While reading about the backup drive I duscovered the model and serial number of my drive had a 32% failure rate. That is not a typo. 32%. Further investigation revealed that the backup drive was only intended to spin when in use. I had mine plugged into a Drobo 5N and was nearly always on and never thought about it again until it failed. So my research for a new drive focused on drives and manufacturers that had a good track record and reliablity in server configurations which do spin all the time. I chose the 4TB here based on customers reviews in server use and this drive was the best price for the TB I could find.

Best NAS Drive For The Price EVER!!!

    Very quiet and fast ish.

First 1tb can do over 100mb/s at all times. If you are using this to put games on like me I’d adivce to split this into 2 parts 1tb and 2tb. Store you music and docutments on the slightly slower 2tb parts and commonly played games on the 1tb part.

Other than that it’s very nice. The packaging could be a lot better since there is no foam or air to pad it out, just the box and some carboard inside to hold it up.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWhen it comes to mechanical hard drives, you can’t get much better then Western Digital, they’ve been in the game a long time and have a fine tradition of producing fast, quality drives backed up by superb warranty (although I’ve heard that it’s no longer for 5yrs). I’ve had Maxtor and Seagate drives but since buying a WD Caviar Black, then two WD 10,000 rpm VelociRaptors, I haven’t looked back. I bought a pair of WD Red 3TB NAS drives almost 2 years ago to compliment the Synology DS215j. Incidentally, they show up as 2.68TB when installed! I’m no techie but I know that it’s not unusual for hard drive capacity to be less than marketed for some obscure technical reason.

Although OEM, the drives arrived properly packed and in sealed anti-static bags. Installation was a breeze, the DS215j did all the work and had them up and running in moments. So far I’ve not had a problem with these drives. They’re reliable, no temperature issues and practically silent in operation. In terms of speed, they wake up from sleep in about 2-3 secs, and transfer data fast enough for my needs which is mainly archiving RAW files. I’m very happy with them and chances are you will be too.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought a pair of these drives to expand the storage in a Netgear ReadyNAS 102, which previously had two WD RED 1TB drives in it.

Installing the new drives was simple and straightforward and went through with no hitches. The drives have a three year warranty which I don’t expect to have to call upon. Nobody can predict how long a hard drive is going to last, but the previous pair have been going for over three years now with no issues whatsoever and the new ones run as quietly and as cool as their predecessors. I had no issues with registering them on Western Digital’s website, perhaps because I chose the retail package, not the OEM one.

I have 8x 6GB versions of the drive and 4x 4GB versions of the drive
Each of the drives is now out of warranty. At this point I have had no failures. Each of the drives is either being used in an 8 bay NAS or as active drives on my PC or as Backup drives on my PC. The PC drives are used daily for between 12 -16 hours a day, but are not the system drives. All other drives are used in mirrored pairs in a rotation of 16 hours each 3 weeks. I’ve clarified this because I am not in a position to identify the potential for use 24×7.

The drive information on Amazon the drives are described as only tested for NAS with 1-5 drive bays. However, on a support page it clarifies that the Red series are tested for 1-8 bay NAS and there is also a link to a NAS compatibility list [Amazon won’t allow this link].
To find it search for “Compatibility list for the WD Red NAS Hard Drive id=9758” in Google without the quote marks.

This appears to have been tested for the latest drives with NASWare 3.0 although I have been using 4 mirrored pairs of NASWare 2.0 drives without any issues. In NAS systems with 24×7 operation vibration is a factor in terms of reliability which is why NASWare 2.0 drives were recommended for drive enclosures of no more than 5 drives. NASWare 3.0 drives improved on the ability to manage the effect of vibration on the drives and this is why they increased rated these newer drives for up 8 drives per NAS enclosure.

I had the opportunity to purchase the retail drive at the same price as the OEM drive so I was able t compare what you get in comparison to buying the OEM version of the drive. Looking at reviews of the OEM version of this drive there has been some confusion about whether the extra cost is worth it.

To clarify what the differences were I rang Western Digital support. They told me that different countries have different warranty periods. Red series drives in the USA have a 12-month warranty and then you pay a little extra to add the extra warranty. I have bought more than 10 of the Red series of various sizes 3TB, 4TB and 6TB OEM. Each of these drives have registered for 3-year warranties.

WD support suggested that Amazon sourced their OEM drives from different countries and that about 50% of them would register as OEM and only have 12 month’s warranty. Amazon identifies that the drives only come with a 12-month warranty so if you register one and it only gives you a 12 -month warranty you have no grounds to complain.

So in summary spending the extra 14.00 for the retail version gives you the peace of mind of knowing that you definitely have a three-year warranty. It also comes with drive screws and standard retail packaging. The OEM drives generally come with plastic mounts, on either end, to isolate them from damage to the containing boxes. The retail version plastic support mounts are on the side running the full length of the drive see photos.

I think whether you purchase this retail version or opt for the OEM version depends on whether you need a set of screws to mount the drive and more importantly whether you are willing to take the risk that you may end up with a drive which only registers a 12-month warranty. I would suggest that buying OEM drives directly from Amazon, as opposed to buying from a Market Place seller, might increase the chance of getting a three-year warranty and a safely packaged drive.

In terms of performance these drives run quietly and quickly. They have a variable speed between 5,400-5,900rpm. So these are not the fastest drives, which are the black series, but seem to perform quickly in everyday use for Desktop (Windows 10 & 8.1), and NAS (Network Attached Storage).

24x7 quiet, fast and reliable performance for desktops and 1-8 bay NAS
