ABUS Folding Lock Bordo

The BORDO 6000K Folding Lock features six 5mm steel bars connected with rivets, which fold together like a yardstick. This is familiar territory for ABUS – the locks in the ABUS Bordo family have gained a reputation as true classics whose functionality has nevertheless yet to be surpassed. This is a variant that can be opened by one key. This is also suggested by the K for “Key” in the product name.

The ABUS Bordo family are the grand-daddy of folding locks. There are other brands, but I figured the Bordo 6000K would be a tried and true choice. It’s a nice lock, but there are so many variants with different mounting options, and the listings on this site make it difficult to distinguish. I ordered the Bordo 6000K-Saddlefix and it didn’t fit between my saddle and rear basket.

Let me decode the product flavors and maybe you some grief:

    – 6000K – ST: This is a rubber carrying case that comes with velcro straps to fasten it to your bike tube. It also has a bolt pattern for mounting to a standard bottle mount on the frame. The case stretches shut over the lock, but the lock rattles a bit.

    – 6000K – SH: This is an “upgraded” mounting bracket with little arms that snap shut around the lock, holding it securely with less rattle. There are three mounting options: Bottle cage bolts, removable velcro straps, or a more permanent strap that cinches around a bike tube and secures to the bracket with a retaining bolt. This is great for bike frames that don’t have a spare set of bottle bolts.

    – 6000K – SH-SF (SaddleFix): This is only for mounting behind the saddle. It’s the SH bracket, but DOESN’T INCLUDE ANY OF THE STRAPS to mount on your bike’s tubing. It includes an extra bracket that attaches to the SH holder and is only good for securing it behind your seat.

I ordered the SH-SF and ended up frustrated. I had to return it. It didn’t fit with the cargo basket on my rear rack. I would have mounted it on the frame, but ABUS removed all the useful straps from the SH in the SH-SF. I would have used my own straps, but it also appears to be missing a rubber gasket that prevents it from chafing on the frame. Maybe there is no such gasket, but who knows? I would have mounted it on the rear rack stays, but there is just no way to adjust the bracket and no room to drill extra holes.

All this would be easier if the amazon listing for this product were consolidated, but you will find separate listings for each flavor of the lock. You might not be confused — I was.

The saddlefix adapter itself is overengineered with lots of extra plastic so it doesn’t sit flat or work anywhere else. There is a heavy-duty rubber strap, which should be nice to dampen any rattling, but it mostly makes me wonder whether the other two mounts rattle since they don’t have this strap. In short, order the SaddleFix if you are 100% sure that this lock is going on your seat. Also note that this version comes with a “shower cap” for your lock since your bike will spray road dirt onto it unless you are running fenders.

Oh — The lock itself seems fine. There are plenty of reviews online that call this a medium-security bike lock. The Foldylock compact does better against bolt cutters and nut splitters. I wouldn’t use this variant for long-term outdoor storage but in my neighborhood I’d trust it for daytime or even occasional overnight use. The Bordo 6500 is much more secure lock, but it weighs almost double, and this one is 2.5lbs

This replaces one that I lost- falling out of my pannier, and a heavier duty version I tried. This one comes with a very nice desinged holder that mounts on water bottle mount points. Very easy snap in feature. No lock is theft proof, but I’ve been using mine for a few years and feel confidant leaving my bike for a short while in a low crime area.

Trs bon antivol, pas le plus costaud, mais un peu moins lourd et volumineux. Par contre, le support de selle, pas assez large, est incompatible avec ma selle et ne peut pas y tre fix : seule solution, le visser l’emplacement du support de bidon.
