1st time I have ever taken the plunge in buying a re refurbished laptop. I am hugely impressed. Arrived well packaged and in original box. And the laptop is like new with not a scratch on it at all. Seriously impressed with my purchase.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersWhen I was deciding on what to by the list below was my criteria
    Google Chrome
    Touch Screen
    Not too heavy
    Decent battery life
    Bright screen in ambient light
    Light touch keyboard

    Google Chrome.
The reason for selecting Google Chrome is the terrible experience I’ve had with Microsoft Windows systems over the years. The frequent windows updates that break things has caused me a lot of grief from time to time so I all my computer equipment is free from the tyrany of Windows. Although Chrome is not perfect, it mostly does what it says on the can and keeps things up to date without any major upsets. Linux is another viable option if you don’t mind some of the idiosyncrasies of Linux desktops. I wanted this computer to be my second goto system when I just want to escape from work and do stuff that just works. All the above comes with a caveat insofar as Google limit the number of years that they will support your device with updates. But at least they tell you when that is likely to happen whereas most vendors just unceremoniously dump you and your device!

    Touch Screen.
I’m not particularly keen on using mouse pads for hours on end, I much prefer using my index finger to poke things into action on the screen. For many things this is more intuitive, but if I need to spend hours working on something then I’ll go back to my workstation with a traditional cordless mouse (which incidentally you can use on this Chromebook via the USB connecor)
I’ve given the touch screen a 4 star rating because it can be a little unresponsive and inaccurate at times. I’ve discovered that holding the edge of the screen with one hand while jabbing the screen with the other frequently causes odd ball behaviour. This I assume is due to the sensing electronics in the screen sensing my hand more than my finger. Other than that it’s pretty good for most screen navigation needs.

The big bonus with the touch screen is tent mode, flipping the lid 270 degrees so it stands on the edge of the keyoard on one side and screen lid on the other. It’s great for a cosy time with the duvet on dark cold nights to stream a video or TV channel. It’s also useful in the kitchen for following online food recipes whle just using the touch screen for navigation. The actual screen cleans down nicely so ingredient covered fingers don’t get anywhere near the keyboard! You can use it as a big notepad by turning the lid 360 which disables the keyboard and brings up onscreen keyboard widgets which work fine. Tent mode is my favourite use case, I find the notbook configuration a bit heavy after a while.

    Not too heavy.
It’s a bit at the top end of the weight I expected for a nice thin looking machine so your experience might be different to mine, but acceptable.

    Battery life.
It’s not the best I had not is it the worst and of course it depends on usage, watching or streaming videos will consume the battery power faster than just sitting there with the screen open not doing much. It’s OK for the price of the system.

    Screen brightness
My usage lighting conditions varies quite a lot from browsing news early in the morning during breakfast to snuggling down late at night to wrap up the day with streaming something or other. The brightness level works well, from almost dark to very bright and so far I’ve not struggled to see the screen contents in all the lighting conditions I’ve used it in. I’ve not used it in bright direct sunlight and to be fair any actively illuminated screen is not going to perform well in direct sunlight.

    Keyboard
I prefer a light touch keyboard and this one fits the bill for me, in addition the keys light up when you are using them (or poking the touch screen with a finger), that’s very useful in low ambient light areas such as the lounge when others are watching TV with the lights subdued.

    Other bits.
The system is charged using a (supplied) C type high power USB brick. There is a C USB socket at either side of the keyboard so if you need to plug in and charge while using it you can use either side so socket so the cable does not get in the way. Also if you have other high power chargers available then you can use them if like me you misplace the one that comes with the system. It will moan at you if you plug in a USB charger that does not have enough grunt for the job.
There is only 1 B type USB socket on the left hand side, so if you have a number of those to plug in you will need a USB hub. But as more and more devices are being supplies with C type USB then I don’t see it as a long term problem.

One gripe is that it does not have a HDMI socket for connection to a 4K telly or monitor which couild be a issue if you might one day want to use it for a presentation or plug into the telly for others to view your screen.

Overall, a good all round system at a good price.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI really like this Chromebook, I marked it down a star because the first one that Amazon supplied developed a speaker fault after a few days . I eventually had it replaced by Amazon, , the customer service given by Amazon is one reason why I am happy to buy from them.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI am so pleased with this Chromebook! I’ve always used Windows but now I am a full convert to this OS. I like how fast it is with multiple tabs open and best of all: NO FAN!!! I am on Zoom meetings all day/all week and this is great for me.
The screen is quite shiny and the keys are difficult to see at night (white light, silver keys) but I’m OK with that.
It’s fun to flip and stand like a tent whilst watching films – I just love it 🙂

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI bought this to sort of replace a decade old Windows 7 desktop, and so yes… OF COURSE I’d find it quick compare with that, but it’s sort of more than just that.
Out of the box, it’s a weighty piece of kit due to the robust aluminium chassis, I believe. It feels to me to be a premium and moderately robust product, the weight actually being more reassuring than anything else.
As with nearly all modern machines, the keyboard is of a certain button type, as opposed to something a little more traditional (I been playing with these things since the mid 90s, my first keyboard was a classic IBM slab!), which is fine for what it is, yet…
I have a wireless mouse and keyboard – years old – and by putting their receiver into the USB port, they function fully and seamlessly… so I basically have a more compact and powerful computer thingy which I can use as a tablet (though it feels odd to be holding onto the keys on the back), a laptop, or fold it like a tent and use landscape…
Sure, it’s only been a couple of days, and yes I’ve only really done a bit of internet thingy and some video watching, but as far as I can tell at this point, it’s a very capable machine and certainly fulfils my requirements.
Maybe it could do with more ports in and out and stuff like that, but hubs can be bought easily.
    Very pleased so far.
If there is no update to this, then assume that yes, I’m still happy with it.

My last Chromebook an ASUS C300 after seven and a half years continuous use finally died. So I was determined to get another ASUS.
This Chromebook is an absolute pleasure to use. Better than dared Hope for. The keyboard is sturdy and well spaced. The screen gives a beautiful clear image. Streams Netflix and YouTube with ease. The touchscreen is fabulous too.
I cannot fault it. I love it.

Love it. Had chrome, gmail and docs etc. on my windows 10 lap top. All transferred seemlessly on this Asus chrome book. The standard word key commands are exactly those word users are used to. The new key commands are very useful, they are clearly laid out in the on sceen tutorials, control + alt + / displays them for instant reference.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThere is not much to dislike about this product. To be really picky I do not like the illuminated keyboard but this facility can be “turned off”. I use my chromebook “off grid”, I can by away from mains electric for days but the battery life is proving to be exceptional and the time to recharge is really quick. Storage space is huge but with the addition of cloud storage there is no problem. I was initially concerned about being able to work offline but this has not been a problem. All in all I am really pleased that I purchased this product.

I found the chrome book very good quite versatile, the battery lasts for ages and recharges quickly. It is very strong being made of aluminium, which makes it a bit more expensive than some similar models, but I noticed the have now been reduced. I would recommend especially if you are travelling around with it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersOmg… this is the best buy
It was so hard trying to find a small laptop suitable for the office and sixth form.
It is absolutely amazing. It does everything my old HP laptop does + more!! The touch screen is a blessing and the brightness adjustments is just amazing.
It is quite light and small enough to fit in my bag perfectly
HOWEVER !! – to use a printer on this you have to have a specific type – wireless / wifi enabled. My canon MG series does not work , however my printer died anyway. That is the only downside but not too bad, worst case I just email my mum to print for me but I’m ordering an HP printe

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing but not all printers are compatible

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’ve been researching Chromebooks for a couple of months and had decided this was the one for me. I was going to treat myself to it with my Christmas money but had decided if it was included in the Black Friday sale then I’d buy it then. I wasn’t really expecting it to be discounted so was thrilled when it was.

I wasn’t going to wait until Xmas to try it out though and I’ve been using it all week. It hasn’t disappointed at all! I’m absolutely thrilled with it and does everything I want it to do perfectly. I’m not enough of a techie to go into much detail. All I can say is, for what I want it for which is online shopping, research, watching films/tv (Netflix/Prime), video conferencing (Zoom), a bit of letter writing, email, social media etc, it’s spot on and I really can’t fault it.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersI have just replaced my Windows Surface 3 with the Asus C434 Chromebook. So here’s how my first two weeks have gone making the switch. The Surface was not being used for anything heavy duty — mainly to remote control my Windows desktop back in the office, browsing, Netflix and simple Microsoft Office stuff with Word, Excel and OneNote. In order to put off reading glasses a little while longer, I needed a bigger screen and also the Surface was taking a while to boot up – only about a minute but when you are on the move

The screen is the same shape (aspect ratio) as most desktop monitors including mine so it works well using the full screen for remote control. It has similar sharpness and viewing angle to the Surface screen which was very good although the C434’s is not quite as bright but OK. Which is fine for work but not quite so good for movies. Also the sound is not that loud but fine if there is no background noise.

The real surprise is how snappy the C434 is. Because it has a long battery life, I can leave it on standby the whole day and it is ready to roll before I have even opened out the screen. It connects within a couple of seconds to Wifi and runs a remote control session almost as if you are at the desktop itself even on a mobile 4G connection via my Samsung S8. With the Surface I was often seeing lag to a point it was too frustrating to use. Needless to say, browsing with Chrome on a Chromebook is super quick — again most noticeable on a mobile connection.

There seem to be complaints about the touchpad but it seems fine to me. However, I use a Bluetooth mouse so I am probably the wrong person to give an opinion on that. Keyboards may be subjective and the C434 is OK to me but I prefer the feel of the Surface and a proper desktop keyboard.

Here are some of the less good things that I have found when switching to Chrome OS.

    1. There are plenty of Android apps but they appear to be optimised for phones or tablets. This means they may require touch input in some places and don’t work with a mouse/touchpad. Other things like hotkeys and mouse friendly menus are also not as polished as their Windows counterparts.

    2. Android apps appear to be buggier than their Windows equivalents. For example, remote control AnyDesk displays the top half of the screen lightly shaded but still perfectly useable. The mapping of the keyboard to a US layout less so. The cursor in OneNote is not always shown and this makes the app unusable. (Funnily, it works a treat on my Samsung Android phone). Sometimes the mouse disappears for some apps but re-appears if I hit a cursor key or cycle between apps. I would like to point out that Netflix seems to work fine. Well, as fine as it does on my other devices.

    3. There are different actions for right click and scroll on the Chromebook touchpad using two fingers which take a little getting used to.

    4. Chrome OS doesn’t do “windows” as well as Windows and appears best switching between apps full screen. This makes sense on a phone but it would be nice if it was slicker when you have a 1080 resolution screen.

If like me, you use your laptop as a gateway to your Windows desktop, then this Chromebook works really well. If you need it just for browsing and email then it is also excellent but I personally would have gone for a smaller cheaper Chromebook as the C434 is too heavy and bulky to carry around like a book (unlike the Surface). It does feel like a premium product though.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersNever had a Chromebook before, but many laptops PC’s, currently a Surface laptop. Just getting to grips with the new Chromebook., so these are my initial impressions. I agree with many reviewers – the build quality is excellent, probably better then the Surface. It should be because it costs just over 500.00, but I think that price is justified on build quality. I am fortunate in that I have both devices. but if I had to choose one – no contest the Surface wins, but it is much more expensive than the Chromebook. The Surface is much more versatile than the Chromebook, and although some users have changed to a Chromebook as their main digital device, personally I would not. I would say that the Asus Chromebook 434 Flip is one of the best, if not the best Chromebook on the market, but it cannot match the versatility of a dedicated windows 10 laptop, such as the Microsoft Surface, but it is a superb Chromebook.
UPDATE: Having used The Asus 434 Flip Chromebook, for a few weeks, I think I have underestimated the potential., and I am impressed by the performance. For many users, this would be an ideal device..
UPDATE: There appears to be an issue with Bluetooth pairing/Bluetooth connections. Neither of my mobile phones will connect and other devices need to be re-paired after each reboot. Maybe just my Chromebook or a widespread defect.in the hardware or Chrome operating system. Some other reviewers suggest the defect is with the Chrome operating system, so may not be a device issue. I do not know.
UPDATE: Re: Bluetooth pairing/connection issue. Technical support from Asus was unsatisfactory. No solution offered. Conversley customer support from Amazon, who offered a refund or replacement was first rate.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersAs soon as I opened it I thought what a nice looking laptop, premium quality and finish. Easy setup as long as you have a Google account just sign in and everything you had before gets downloaded, brilliant, it even remembers all your passwords for other sites. The 14 inch screen is amazing and the speakers nice and clear and ideal for watching films or you tube video. Now the downside, in the description it states that you have access to the play store but a lot of the apps are not compatible with chrome and one of the main uses for me when in the caravan is watching skygo or my amazon prime video neither of which are available on chrome. For this reason alone I had to return to amazon and go for android tab which I know will work with my apps. If sky and amazon prime are not important to you then this machine is for you without a doubt.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersNew to Chromebooks but this is a great device. Excellent keyboard, nice touch-response, and good trackpad. Excellent screen (thin bezels! HP take note!) although wish it could be turned brighter allowing for use outside (I can sacrifice lower battery performance for usability on the odd occasion when I am on the go).

A word of warning to new ChromeOS users. I had switched to the beta-channel on Chrome OS and all was fine. Was on the verge of returning this device as touch-screen started behaving erratically within 30 days of owning. No hard-reset or power-wash could fix it. Touch screen registers touch upside down! Then as a last attempt I changed the channel back to stable, and voila, touch screen works great again. So problem with Google Chrome OS beta channel, and not the device. Keep up the good work Asus, next time a brighter screen please! 🙂

Golden Review Award: 29 From Our UsersBought for home use, browsing, etc. Really pleased there is a lot of storage on-board plus the micro-SD slot. Four gig of memory seems to be enough for my needs, if I start to think I need more I will upgrade when that time arrives. The screen is very good and big for the chassis, only slight downside is it’s glossy so you get reflections. But its very easy to adjust screen brightness and volume, plus the sound quality is decent. Read somewhere about the silver/lighty-up keyboard being difficult to see the letters, but once you adjust the lighty-up brightness (using the key combo!) this is not a problem.
Still learning my way around it. Seems there are lots of keyboard shortcuts worth learning. I think that some users may get confused over the difference between Chromebook apps, Chrome browser extensions and the Android apps. The the inclusion of the latter, while not being perfectly implemented yet for many apps, is an absolute boon and makes the ‘book doubly useful. Don’t like the built-in media player? Simply load your favorite (VLC? Pulsar?) Android app and play your media direct from micro-SD or USB until the cows come home. Excellente!
Overall five stars and two thumbs up from me.

Golden Review Award: 181 From Our Users** Edit (December 2020):
I still love this machine after 20 months. Have been using it a lot over the pandemic period as it’s much lighter than the 16-inch Macbook Pro I switched to (from Windows) a while back for the more demanding stuff. As with all tech (at least mine), once the initial novelty wears off, the tendency is for it to get tossed around with a lot less care, and this Chromebook is no exception. Apart from a few scratches, it’s as good now as it was on Day 1 – stood up to the knocks very well. The only change I would make to my original review below is to say that the trackpad really grew on me with use. Not quite as good as the Mac, and obviously smaller, but nevertheless still precise, extremely comfortable and easy on the joints (compared to a lot of PC laptops I have used over the years).

    **Original post (from April 2019):
The screen is great – sharp, bright and with good contrast – very comfortable to use outside on a bright sunlit day. Don’t believe one of the previous reviews criticising the keyboard and the trackpad. I do a lot of writing for a living and I am finding keyboard really comfortable over long periods – precise and responsive. The trackpad is OK – smooth and accurate – but not exceptional. The touch screen has about the right level of sensitivity for me when reaching out to it in laptop mode (haven’t used the machine much in tablet mode yet). The only very slight caveat is that it gets a bit ‘laggy’ switching between windows when you have a lot of them open – by a lot mean 8-10 – but even then it’s still perfectly usable. As soon as you close down a few windows, it becomes very snappy again. I suspect it’s that the model I have only has 4Gb of memory and some of the things I am running are quite demanding (by Chromebook standards). Other than that, beyond working well as a laptop/notebook, I also use it with a USB-C dock on my desk to drive two 27 inch monitors – no config needed (unlike Windows), and it’s very responsive with the big screens. Last thing worth mentioning is that the machine works a treat with my Huawei LTE dongle – again just plugged it in and it worked (no driver installs or other fuss). Battery life seems pretty good – used it unplugged for about 6 hours a couple of times now, and still a lot of life left in the battery on each occasion. Bottom line: I much prefer using the ASUS C434 to my premium Windows notebook (Lenovo X1 Carbon), even though the latter cost 3 times as much. The ASUS is now my day-to-day workhorse machine.
(PS – gave it 5 stars despite the multi-tasking caveat, as that’s more down to me pushing it harder than most people would)

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersI can’t use anything but Chromebooks these days. I wanted something with a bit more oomph and a larger screen, and with the Android apps. This does it all. I’d prefer the USB 3 to be on the other side, where I have my mouse. And the keys can be a little hard to see, especially if you are lying in bed and the backlight is on – the angle make it hard to see the letters. So far I’m not unhappy at all.

Golden Review Award: 58 From Our UsersA big step up from my previous Chromebook. This really feels like a premium product.

The screen is astounding, like it’s floating in the air. The keyboard feels perfect. I prefer the back-lighting to be off if I use it on my lap and on if I use it on a desk as it works best if you are looking at it from above rather than at an angle.

The trackpad is probably the best I have used – extremely smooth and accurate.

Asus have come up with a real winner here.
