If you can get past (Or Love!) the looks it`s rock solid with a nice easy App or Web UI.
If you need VDSL and want an all in one solution this is awesome!
We had a skyq hub which could only work reliably with about seven devices. Sky kept fobbing us off, refused to admit there router was rubbish. Replaced with the Asus and now it easily deals with 30 devices. Sky make it a bit tricky to set up with 3rd party products but it wasn’t to hard with help of sky community.
I hardly write reviews but being this is a pricey router I thought I’d give my verdict for claritys sake. I’m on an FTTC broadband so fibre to copper phone line hence where this router with modem fits in perfectly. With BT as my ISP and smart hub 2 I was sceptical whether the Asus DSL AX82U would be an upgrade……oh yes indeed! So I know lots of us want faster internet speeds but this is not necessarily going to increase your download and upload times but where it shines is that it can deal with a lot more data transfer and improve stability of your network plus more. Setup is fairly easy and using the Asus app is pretty straightforward.
What I liked is within the hub settings menu you have a lot more choice of channels for the 2.4 and 5ghz band so you can potentially avoid overlapping channels from your neighbours WiFi, testing this using a WiFi analyser app. You can also separate the bands so for gaming I use 5ghz and all other devices on 2.4ghz.
As I said before it’s not really about increasing your overall internet speeds but after running tests I was getting a huge improvement in latency between upload and download times. Nearly 3x less upload data transfer latency after running a buffer bloat test. This equates to a performance increase while gaming cause you notice the response time is much better with less frame drops while playing on different game servers.
This is where my ISP router fell short even though my ping was good it wasn’t a stable connection and I didn’t actually realise until I compared it to the Asus DSL AX82U and the difference was night and day.
I highly recommend this router as it can give you a better solution for FTTC broadband whether that be gaming, streaming, downloading etc.
Really happy with the router, I ended up turning the lights. Although they are kinda cool, just not the best look for my Living room. The actual router is great, I found it really easy to set up and connection to my devices is far more stable than the router it replaced. Set-up needed to be done via a wired connection from my laptop though, the app only seems to work once the unit is set up and ready to go.
The app its self is fine, give you real time information about whats going on with your network. The biggest plus for me is the inclusion of lifetime antivirus/firewall protection powered by Trend Micro.
Very easy to set up and connect to my broadband easy set up on TalkTalk broadband. I’m very happy with my product. I really recommend this !!!
Incredibly easy to set up with EE FibrePlus (but not compatible with FibreMax) to upgrade from their SmartHub. I had been studying the long on-line manual and the EE help pages in advance but decided to just take the plunge.
I plugged it in, connected at first via ethernet cable, told it UK, EE, username and password and it was working at once. Now have WiFi6 in the home which our laptops can take advantage of. Amazing number of features which I am still getting to know. The lights are entertaining.
To answer my earlier questions, the Wifi can be turned off at night using the settings, and the USB home media feature looks very good for all I’d need.
Superb (although expensive) modem/router combo – has excellent management features with parental controls so you can see what the kids are browsing, lock their internet times etc.
It has a whole host of other great features but for me its just been great to get rid of some opendns rules and combine my management into one device.
First time buying a router to replace the standerd one given out with plusnet here in the UK. Big improvement to features and range. Be warned is definatly not plug and play. You do have to dig into the settings to get it up and running. But with no previous experience was able to get it working perfectly from a few forum posts. Software is fairly straightforward to understand, and once your up and running you will find yourself getting obsessed with data traffic monitoring!
This is important because many modern browsers by default have a setting of not allowing redirects and popups.
(The app you download still uses your default browser).
It was only after hours I discovered this. When I reported problem before this discovery which appeared as DNS error I received an email back telling me to read the F**ing start guide (which does not explain this at all and is all of 4 pages long) and failing that factory reboot – clean cache etc etc. Whether this response was from an untrained human or an Artificial Unintelligent i dont know.
There are many other settings which if you are not familiar with you are left to experiment with because they are not explained.
Another great thing is that to even look at extended warranty they demand you download a further app! WHY?? you can register the product online but not extend your warranty .
I have been setting up modems since they first came out 25 years + and there is absolutely no reason Asus could not have avoided all of these difficulties.
Once set up the modem / router works OK. Jitter is low and this makes an improvement on what it replaced. Signal strength is a little better as you move from the router. I have one AIMesh extender for the moment added and will probably buy more as we have a big old house with thick walls.
This Asus AX5400 router is phenomenal, I now have the fiberoptic speeds that I’m paying for (FTTC). The free Plusnet router was providing speeds of 10-30mbps with regular dropouts. This Asus router now gives consistent 65-67mbps download and 20-25mbps upload and no dropouts. The PS5 can be playing, with a video on a phone and conference call on a laptop without any lag or dropouts.
The app is easy to use but for the initial router setup, I found the Asus website was easier after reading other reviews.
For smart plugs, speakers & smoke detectors I did have to plug in the old router and transfer each one across to the new Asus router.
I think the AX5400 router looks great, the lights are customisable and aren’t too bright at night due to the down facing front.
This is definitely worth every penny, for the speed and stability improvements. I am very pleased with this Asus router.
Occasionally, at least once every week to fortnight, internet slows down and WiFi connection becomes buggy. Easily fixed with a reboot.

I bought this to replace my BT Smart Hub 2, mainly because I needed VPN on router and a bit more control.
Connection to BT Infinity is simple using the wizard. Just select BT Infinity (VDSL) and the wizard does the work for you. The only thing I would recommend is using the same SSID and password as your old router. This way, all your devices connect back up without an issue.
Some of my favourite features are;
– Wifi 6, there is a noticeable difference in speeds on Wifi 6 devices. Everything is much snappier.
– The ability to have up to 4 concurrent VPN connections and route selected devices through these on the router.
– Adaptive QoS let’s you optimise the router for different network uses on the fly. E.g. Media Streaming, Gaming, Working from Home.
– Traffic Analyser let’s you see what devices are hogging bandwidth. You can then limit bandwidth on these devices. Evil Dad 🙂
I had a BT Wifi mesh disc with my Smart Hub 2 as the signal dropped off a bit upstairs. I have no issues at all with signal on this router, I get full signal upstairs now without the need for a mesh system.
Would highly recommended to anyone looking to upgrade from their standard ISP Hub.
It works well, the interface is intuitive. Don’t expect a range upgrade. You’ll need additional items to boost your range like repeaters or poweline extenders. Haven’t had any problems with it after a few months of ownership. The instant guard app which allows you to create a VPN using this router to secure your connection on public WiFi is a very cool feature. It also allows you to use the Asus router app from anywhere.
Update, a few months on and it had been so nice to have fast trouble free WiFi. All the years of buffering on our Amazon fire stick and smart TV, disappeared. The Sky box and computers taking forever to download files, not any more. Strong signal throughout our home and I have not had to use the mesh options. I was a bit weary as the cost of this hub was not cheap but it was worth every single penny and more.
Purchased this to replace a Vodafone hub. The Vodafone hub is/was a couple of years old and I believe (was told by Vodafone) that they have a newer version out that is much better than the one we had. I just did not wish to sign up for another 24 -48 month contract to get it.
We were experiencing frequent drop outs and randomly different laptops and devices would be kicked off the network and it was not possible to reconnect them until after the hub had been rebooted. Also we experienced constant buffering and pixilation issue whilst streaming (on Samsung Smart TV, Amazon fire stick, various tablets, and laptops).
I looked at loads of combined modem routers and separate modem and router combos, in the end I called Netgear, TP link and Asus tech support, the agent at Asus I spoke to was really helpful and went through the various options. As I did not wish to have extenders all over the house, the Asus AX82U was the best option. If not purchasing this product on Amazon from this page be careful as Asus do an identical AX82U that is not DLS, so it is just a stand alone router, no modem. You need the one that states modem router or DSL router.
Only had it running for a day and a half but it is so, so, so, so much better than the Vodafone hub. Devices that were poor signal are now medium to high signal, even the TV with the fire stick on it, which is the furthest from the router, is now reading 3 bars instead of one. Speed is also greatly improved, in fact my daughter noticed on her Samsung S21 when connecting to the wifi it now says connection very fast instead of normal. No more buffering, no drop outs so far and downloads are much better instead of 3 to 5 mbps for steam, Origin, windows or Nvidia updates, we are now getting over 10 to 12mbps. The Amazon firestick (the 4K version) is transformed, it is just so quick now, no more waiting for 25 to 50 seconds for it to load content, it just pops up instantly.
I have mine up and working, it did take a little while, as delivered on Saturday and Asus tech support are not open on weekends. As I could not find any info or guides on setting for Vodafone fibre superfast two broadband set ups I have provided a picture with the setting to get the modem connected to Vodafone.
Plug into a laptop with a ethernet cable type http://192.168.50.1/ in to your browser bar. Or you can use the Asus app.
When you start the setup, once you have inputted the username and password you want for your AX82U, you will go to a page that asks for your country location ISP provider (of course Vodafone are one of the few IPS’s not in the drop down) select other/unknown. This will take you to a page asking you for a VLAN number. I found somewhere a brief thread that mentioned using the code 101 so this is what I used. Then it will take you to the wireless setting page, to name and set up wifi passwords. Then it is a page with links to computer wireless software updates, so your desktop or laptop are able to match the best performance of the Asus AX82U.
From here you should go to the main router page, of which I have provided a picture. You will have to type in your Vodafone user name and password (the user name you will have to get from Vodafone, which you can do via the app chat, it will start with DLS). I have arrowed the two setting that you will need to make sure are selected for the modem to handshake with Vodafones servers. As I could not find anything to help online, I had to trial and error.
If it does not work you may have to update the software, one way if the modem will not connect, if it still works use your old hub a a temp modem. With your Vodafone hub powered up and connected to the internet, plug an ethernet cable into one of the yellow ports/sockets on the back of the Vodafone modem and the other end into the blue WAN port/socket on the Asus AX82U. Power up the Asus AX82U and it should show that you have an internet connection via the secondary WAN. Then just go to the firmware version on the top of the page (it is in my picture) and click on the link next to firmware version, it will take you to the page, which is pretty self explanatory once you are on it.
I hope this helps and avoid the hours of trial and error I had, although I was questioning if I had the right VLAN number and then if the username and password were right or if I had to do anything else. As not a bit of Vodafone kit they are not able to help and you will likely be told as I was that they do not use VLAN so they are not able to provide a VLAN (virtual local area network) number. In honesty it may not even matter, I just kept typing it in with the various different setting in the drop down menus, until one combo worked.
Since having this new modem / router we have had no WIFI drop outs and the signal strength to all the places that we normally had poor reception, has doubled. For us it is a very good router.
However, if you have never set up a router to your own specifications before then please get someone else to set this up for you, the instruction manual is none existent, apologies, the piece of paper is there but it tells you to do things without the wonderful piece of information on how you would go about doing those things such as “If you wish to split the WIFI signal into two separate signals, one of 2.4GHZ and one of 5Ghz then you can do this” , thanks for that, any hint on how to do that? Also, what are the repercussions of not doing it?
Having set up many a router I managed to do it quite easily, the menus for the IT Savvy people are easy to navigate and easy to figure out how you go about what you want to do.
I am 100% impressed with the performance of the Modem / Router once it is up and running, but don’t expect to be able to set it up with the enclosed instructions, they are of no help what so eve
The upgrade from the Asus DSL-AC68U to the Asus DSL-AX82U is very simple. 98% of the interface is the same with the addition of smarter Wi-fi, Wi-fi load balancing and Amazon Alexa features added on the newer device. Using with a my current FTTC connection, the connection speed improved to the quoted maximum speed on both download and upload. Much better than using the Service providers router.
The Wi-Fi signal is improved compared to the vanilla DSL-AC68U, but I had modified my original router by replacing the 3dbi x 3 aerials with 10dbi x3 aerials. So did not notice such a big difference in coverage, but an improvement in speed on newer devices (160mhz / Wi-fi 6) and larger bandwidth availability.
This router supports Mesh and seems to work a little faster with my TPLink Powerlines.
Definitely a great router and I have noticed my video calls and audio is clearer during my WFH meetings.
Definitely worth a consideration to replace the standard FTTC Service Provider routers for those home’s that are still awaiting an FTTP connection.
I received my Asus vdsl router today. With trepidation I opened the box and found everything I needed and a basic manual. Previous routers have always been a bit iffy to set up especially with Sky broadband but not with this one. Power it up and connect a ethernet cable directly to a computer and follow the instructions to the letter and it will be a breeze to connect to your isp.
All settings are optimised to work flawlessly. The GUI is straight forward to use and set out with all the information you require. The novice will have no problems and the expert will have everything he or she needs. I connected all my devices the 5g connection with no problems and the WIFI signal is strong all over the house. Asus have starred again with the first WIFI 6 enabled DSL/VDSL router on the market, it runs cool, looks cool and guaranteed for 3 years with free professional high grade security built in.
The best router I have ever purchased and I have bought a few. Buy it you won’t be disappointed.
eplaced my asus ac68u. dropouts galore. its solid performance is well worth the price.
its not plug n play, you must follow the install instructions to get it up and running. i noticed straight
away that the signal was stronger, and 2 days in now and no dropouts. the picture has also improved
mad as that sounds, the images are stronger, better detail, and faster wifi. download speed is slightly faster
but rock solid. wifi speed tests use to wave either side of the download speed indicated, now its solid and still. so anyone having dropouts should consider this one.
UPDATE
yes a very good product. dropouts are a thing of the past. everything is much faster to launch, it has improved youtube speed and clarity, and is so reliable. wifi down the end of our bungalow, no problem.
I paired mine with an Asus XT8 to create a mesh and I have faster and stronger signal throughout in my house than I did with the Sky Hub with 3 mini boxes. I am also getting more than double the throughput over wifi in the furthest distance.
Great service from Maznun. First time using them and would have no hesitation using them again in the future!
Installed and connected to Internet within 5 minutes, using Android App. Used existing SSIDs and passwords, most of my devices connected seamlessly.
Had to upgrade WiFi driver on laptop to use ‘normal’ GUI to router.
Added 4 existing AiMesh nodes, two were stubborn to reset to default – but managed eventually. Whole process took 90 minutes.
GUI link to router much faster than it was with the 68U.
Damn me – I’d only relatively recently purchased the nodes as AC, rather than AX. Ah well!…..
EDIT : November 2021 – Doesn’t support Guest Network to nodes, only on the router.
It was easy and straight forward to get set up, no issues and performance has been fantastic. Having several wifi6 devices this router has been perfect to work alongside them, a very modern router modem combo, albeit with a gamer aesthetic which may not appeal to all.
Being able to control everything via their mobile app just makes things that much easier, with both logged and real-time statistics to track how the network is preforming.
This unit is packed with features that I won’t go into, check a retail review for that but you won’t be disappointed.
I will say though. The UI can be a little overwhelming at first, especially to the average user but exposing this all is a great move as you know you have full control over all its features and options.
