This is probably what you are looking for, this delivers everything I needed and more, easy to set up, great app, I can focus speeds to certain devices, signal range is great, split network. And it looks like a spaceship, what’s not to love.
I got vodaphone gigafast because they had the best speeds in the area but I didn’t want to pay an extra 15 a month to rent a WiFi 6E router that I’d ultimately have to give back so I bought this WiFi 6 router. I get 900Mbps download and upload. I live in a house with thick stone walls and I struggled to get good speeds in other rooms using my old router. Now I have this I can get good speeds all around the house over WiFi. The interface also provides a lot of customisation. The 160mhz band and WiFi 6 plus the additional range have made this a huge upgrade and set up was simple.
Ad blocking great
Filters for kids
Controls to block kids gaming at night or when they should be studying
Ability to do all this remotely with an app from your mobile
Gaming on WiFi 6 I’m told is better than Ethernet so my kid broke the laws of physics or I’m just getting old
It’s definitely expensive but you get what you pay for. Currently using it for my home office wifi because I can’t run a cable.
Excellent router, simple to set up and has worked faultlessly from the moment it was switched on.
Everything in the house has connected and worked without any hassle or hiccup
Brilliant bit of kit. I was using a virgin hub 3 which was okay but signal was not that great.
This router immediately made a big difference on signal.
I am able to get 300mbs easy from my bedroom upstairs which is essential as I work from home. This of course depends on size of your house.
Besides having packs of Security features including instant guard (vpn) it has great family options to block certain devices/clients which is assigned to that family member accessing certain sites such as adult content and gambling sites.
I have never had a router like this before and it was straight forward. Turned my virgin router into a modum (can do this through the admin portal) and simply followed the guide.
Just incase anyone was wondering like me this easy works with the virgin tv box just leave the antenna screwed in to your now virgin modum and just plug the Ethernet into the asus router.
My wired speeds are the same as before as to be expected but my wireless speeds have drastically improved to around 800mbps on Wi-Fi 6 devices with up to 900mbps in the same room as the router, my ISP provided router would barely crack 400mbps on a good day. You will need to enable 160MHz if you want to improve the speed of Wi-Fi 5 devices (it took me way too long to figure this out but I went from 300mbps to around 600mbps once enabled).
The wifi strength has significantly improved as well with whole home coverage and only a slight drop in speeds.
The router itself looks great, like an alien ship, however it loses some points as I had a problem with it picking up my wired switches on the first set up but a reset fixed that and if set up through the app it wants you to enable remote access without really explaining what that is or why you wouldn’t want to do it.
People have written automatic. I encountered three Options to select, none of them quotes automatic on the app. Turning the hub into a modem. Easy enough. Getting this router to connect to the internet. Not so easy. I’ve had to reset everything because it won’t connect to the internet. Also, if you have to Google search for answers, another reason why this isn’t automatic. All wires were in the right spot, all powered on. It just won’t connected to the internet.
EDIT:
Have finally got this to work. There are a couple of pitfalls to be aware of. Don’t use an Apple product, for myself I was using a phone. Something to do with the DHCP functional problems I encountered. Separately, there’s a particular order to the setup. If you search for dummies guide, Virgin Broadband, & this product. You’ll find the forum. It’s like 5 steps.
I had tried to do the setup on the iPhone using the ASUS app and/or web browser, both techniques failed. The app doesn’t state anything automatic. The web browser does, but that still won’t work. Use a laptop or PC. For Android phones I don’t know.
The reason why I’ve rated a 4/5 is that it has improved coverage around the home but not improved drastically the upload/download performance. With a home build in the 1800’s, the coverage is ideal. From the screenshots you see, you may believe you’ll magically receive a greater performance than your internet package. It’s only improved for myself to the internet package offering, not greater than.
I was dreading buying a router as the last time i set one up it took hours, this took 5 mins. The app guides you through it, i used ppoe and used vodafone login details
I have been using this router for a while now and don’t really have a bad thing to say about it, nice looking, feels faster when gaming I.e very little lag even whe. using with the BT modem, the only downfall is that I do have to use a Modem and then connect the ASUS to it, I think if it was a straight plug in I would see even more improvement. but over all this is a smart router and the app is user friendly and has plenty of options
Bought to replace cheap generic router supplied by gigabit provider. Immediate improvement and substantially more effective for Wi-Fi than latest generation BT router and THREE disks. Whole house (three floors) coverage with no need for additional assistance. Latest generation an obvious improvement over an older router we tried first. Excelle
I have disabled my virgin media box Wi-Fi with this one. I am so glad my internet speed is so much improved on 2G and over 5G.
I am using virgin media hub as a router only.
Signal in upstairs and downstairs are brilliant compared to virgin generic one.
Easy app to connect and update firmware and monitor the network.
You can actually restrict your kids devices with parental lock and block absolutely.
Brought this to improve my wi-fi signal as my virgin media hub was not upto my standard with regarding wi-fi signal.
The app for your mobile is very handy to check status / devices connected / Led lights control etc.
Worth a look if you are after a new router.
Got this after started to agree with kids tha our old WiFi router was dropping signal too often. We live in a Victorian sandstone terrace house spread over 4 levels with our modem on the main hall (2nd level). We get loads of interference with about 15 2.4Ghz WiFi points alone detectable.
This has cured all of our poor signal areas and can even get a WiFi signal in rear garden with no line of site to router. It weaken a little on top floor but still much better than old wifi4 router
Interface is good (web browser better than app imho) and you rightly get channels into changing router name and password. Good security features too. And you can fiddle with the LCD display too.
Only issue was with Dell laptop with older Intel WiFi couldnt see network until I turned router off wifi6. Worked fine once that turned off. Bit odd as a decrepit HP core 2 laptop had no issues but if you find older hardware not finding router it’s likely they can’t support WiFi 6 so you need to either turn off or get a newer WiFi adaptor (which is what I did with the Dell laptop). This isn’t the routers faul
If you are looking for lots of technical information about data transfer rates, networks diagnostics and all that stuff that will have most of us losing the will to live – read another review! 🙂
This is a simple explanation on why this is a seriously good router and major upgrade over the stuff your provider (BT/Talk Talk/Plusnet etc) supplies.
Before you start, make sure you know your account details. If you don’t know, a (quick?) call to your provider or a bit of searching via google as many of these are generic. You will need to enter this in the setup.
Secondly download the app to your phone. It is easily found on the Apple or Google play stores.
Search Asus router or similar and you will find it – or use the QR code in the manual.
To be honest the setup is as simple as that. Power down your current router, unplug and then just plug in the network cable to the connector marked WAN and power up the Asus router.
Fire up the app on your phone, select the model of router – it is on the box – and follow the instructions.
Congratulations to Asus on the most straightforward setup of a router I have ever done (and I have done a number over the years).
You can turn off the silly RGB LED display if you so wish. I did and it just now sits there silently doing its job.
There is so much more you can do, from setting timers on certain connections (say a kids phone/tablet) to deciding what devices get priority and so very much more.
However, if you are unsure on it, just let it manage things automatically.
One other thing, try turning OFF the 2.4ghz frequency and running just on the 5ghz.
You should find you get much faster connection speeds and no loss of range. And that is coming from someone who lives in a 200+ year old cottage with solid walls more than a foot thick!
If you have a more recent phone (S10 or newer) you should now get wifi6 connections which give a serious increase in download speeds!
All in all, if there is a better combination of price, performance and ease of use, I have not seen it.
If your current router is giving you issues or you don’t think the wi-fi around the house is very good then you should be very happy with this.
I will update over the coming months, but if it continues as it has in the first month then there won’t be a lot to report.
Highly recommended!
Update 12th January 2022.
No change to the above. Still working utterly flawlessly with rock solid connections both wired and wireless. I did say these updates may not have much to report! 🙂
Update 7th March 2022.
Well I am afraid there is still nothing to report!
I did a firmware update which took all of a couple of minutes to complete and still everything works absolutely perfectly.
Connections are totally stable and speeds (and coverage) remain far superior to the BT kit used previously.
Update 2nd July 2022.
Another firmware update applied sometime in June is the only thing to report.
Oh and I had to switch the 2.4ghz band back on to allow an app to work (Govee lights).
Still working absolutely perfectly and the speeds are rock solid along with the connection.
Thanks for getting to the end of the review, I hope you found it useful.
Bought at an incredible Amazon Prime deal, this was the most powerful WiFi 6 router ever value wise with features galore!
Replaces my older workhorse (and itself a beast at its time) RT-N66u Dark Knight edition, the new RT-AX82U is far superior with massive coverage at full-bandwidth 4×4 MIMO 5GHz speeds, and is very simple to interface with and connect too.
Though you can have higher performance (and without the fancy RGB) from other Asus routers, unless you have multiple older WiFi devices that require high-speed 2.4GHz connections, this RT-AX82U at 5GHz is simply incredible. Even at 2×2 MIMO 2.4GHz speeds this router is great regardless and sufficient for my family’s usage.
For the 5GHz devices (such as 2x Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra’s), the router is PHENOMENAL!
Robust, fast, good web-based settings menu and equally good (Android or iOS) app, plus extras!
Enjoy having dedicated gaming gigabit Ethernet port for my Sony PlayStation 5, and though I’d have liked more dedicated ports for other or future consoles, I like how the router can detect other wireless gaming consoles and optimise for them.
Haven’t used the dedicated mobile game features but it’s a nice addition.
If you are able to get this router officially from Amazon (or elsewhere) at a good deal, it’s a steal!
I’d recommend the other more expensive Asus routers ONLY if you require multiple 2.4GHz and 5GHz device connections at full speed (4×4 MIMO), however those routers are overkill.
This router, the RT-AX82U, is well-versed for older and newer tech without breaking the bank.
BRILLIANT!
This is a great product, well packaged desktop friendly, however it comes in two versions, so please ensure that you have selected the right version for your needs.
ASUS RT-AX82U 5400 – The RT stands for router, so no phone port.
ASUS DSL-AX82U 5400 – The DSL stands for modem/router, so a phone port.
Have been a netgear user for years – had Orbis and get increasingly annoyed with the drop outs, super long reboot times and resynchs, not to mention the complex and unreliable satellite setup.
Switched to 2x of these, plus the DSL version to give VDSL and have been super impressed. Easy to set up but also have complex additional information and settings if you need them.
The AIMesh system is SUPER easy to set up – really is. Just turn on the new one, choose ‘find’ on an existing and it does all the rest for you – super quick, super easy and super stable.
System reboots quickly when needed, but is a rarely needed. Excellent range on the WIFI too and no problems with using mixed Wifi.
The WIFI backhaul is fast though using Ethernet backhaul is supported (read instructions though on how to properly set it up – wifi first, then ethernet).
Runs cool and completely silent.
Really happy with this – so much easier, more reliable and better than what it replaced.
Niggles? Only seem able to set the colours on a single member of the mesh – the others use defaults and offer only on or off – no idea why. Really minor stuff!
We are with virgin media (super hub3) and we pay for 300mbps fibre optic. At best we got 100 but it would sit around the 50/60 mark, sometimes less. We would also lose a connection alot and it didn’t cover the whole house.
I’ve had this set up for a week and we are getting a consistent 300+mbps with zero connection drops, and this is with multiple devises being used for games/streaming etc. The range now covers the entire house garden and then some!
Really easy to setup too, just logged into my virgin router changed it to modem mode, then connected this to it and I’m off, the app is really nice too.
Honestly not a bad thing to say about this product its improved our Internet immensely, cannot reconmend enough!
So this router has some good points and bad.I managed to get it when the price dropped to about 120 .
The router takes all of about 5 mins to set up and your away . Clear instructions and very simple to use . Virgin router into modem mode and the first thing you do is speed test, pretty much the same as from my virgin , 220/20 . The range is much better as in my back room the WiFi drops off but with this router it didn’t . Not much of an issue as I don’t really use wireless connections anyway .
Can’t say I noticed any difference using “game” mode over standard on my series x but that connection is hardwired so wasn’t expecting much .
VPN – pointless . Added nord to the router and my speed output dropped from 220mb to 29mb . That is a huge loss and was one of the reasons I purchased it to start with . It makes the feature redundant . The. From time to time it wouldn’t even connect to the vpn . Same vpn on my phone directly and I still got 220mb .
Also I’m the app it has a list of devices connected to the router . Over the space of a month , at least 3 times the list would show all devices offline although they was connected and working fine . A quick reboot and they all re appeared online .
The router is currently back in the box waiting for me to send back as it’s not really any use to me .
If you use WiFi only then I’m sure this is great but if your looking to use a vpn then don’t waste your time
I have virgin media with the 350mb package. When it was first installed I was happy to see 300mb DL speed on my phone .
Much to my surprise one week later I saw 50mb and if I saw something that low I was eligible to cancel. I had heard that the modem from virgin media was awful and thought maybe that could be it. It was right. Next to the modem 350mb Download, 3 metres away down to 200mb, upstairs down to 100mb, and in the furthest point , where u work from home either 50mb on 2.4 GHz or 100gb on a weak signal from 5gz.
After some research I decided to spend a bit more and get this one. Let me tell you, same spot same device from 50mb to 360. The modem looks very good ,it’s got RGB and configurable light patterns, easy to set up and great WiFi 6 service, has a configurable VPN to watch stuff from other countries and honestly I can’t believe how long I waited to see for myself what a proper router does , must buy !
I had been having connection stability issues with my virgin Hub 3, more recently kept having to connect and disconnect, which felt like the virgin hub could not cope with the number of device connections. I read a number of forums that said get another router and put the virgin hub into modem mode. I now have a solid wifi connection throughout the house. No embarrassing tech issues when on important video calls and consistently get the speed I’m paying for. It seems to have lots of good features which I have yet to explore. overall very pleased and great that amazon lets you spread the cost of a few months. Setup was simple, wire it to your virgin hub, put the virgin hub into modem mode and then setup the router using the app. I should have done this sooner and would not have had to put up with the constant moaning from the family.
I bought this router to replace an older Asus Router which was getting a bit “iffy”. It is used with a Virgin router set to Modem mode and the system works very well. With Virgin WI-Fi my MS Surface struggled to get a reliable signal updairs (partly the MS Surface Pro to blame as the Wi-Fi reception is poor at the best of times) but with the Asus router it gets five bars and works so much better.
I was a bit surprised that the User Interface is virtually unchanged from the previous router, but I quickly realised that this was a good thing as it made transferring all the settings much easier.
All in all, highly recommended!
I recently upgraded my internet connection from 100mbps to 350mbps with Virgin Media. The Hub 3 router that Virgin Media provided was not the best but it worked well enough with the 100mbps package. However, after the upgrade I wasn’t able to take advantage of the extra speed through Wifi due to the router. I have been using this router (Asus RT-AX82U) for a few weeks now and it has surpassed my expectations. It was easy to set up and performs very well, allowing me to use the full speed that I’m paying for (the device is seperated from the router by 2 walls and is using the 5Ghz band). The router performs well on both bands throughout the house leaving no signal blackspots. If this router is in your budget, I would recommend i
After suffering a number of video call issues (WFH) with the BT router which is a fair few years old and after spending a few weeks clearing one band of all traffic, as the problem remained, I decided I was due an upgrade. As I’ve used Asus before, I was drawn to the latest AX range. Starting at the bottom, working my way up the range. I really wanted the AX86U but it was just too expensive for the relatively small difference to the AX82U. So I went with the AX82U which looks better in person than online. I don’t really go for the RGB stuff, so left it on the blue breathing mode, which looks good. I moved all devices over manually rather than creating the same network name as the BT router. It took some time but gave me the chance to check out all the devices connected. Anyway, I split the bands (2.4 & 5Ghz) and put all the smart devices on the 2.4 band leaving the 5Ghz for priority devices. I then simply disabled the wifi on the BT smart hub, plugging in a single ethernet cable between the two routers. Its now been up and running for circa 3 weeks and all is well, no video drop outs etc. Range seems good, very stable and is future proofed a bit with the wifi 6. BT smart hub, at least my version was AC. I’ve got 25-30 devices connected with no issues so far, that could have been one of the issues with my old router.
I’m really happy with this router and don’t regret not getting the AX86U. Assuming gaming is not your thing and you can overlook the gaming look of the router, its a good solid choice based on my experience so far.
It is well made, looks good (though I have mine in a cupboard under the stairs), and has an absolute shedload of features. Highlights for me would be Bandwidth monitor (with graphs for live usage), Traffic Analyzer (see how many GB of data your kids are using!), flexible DHCP configuration, and the ability to be a VPN server AND VPN client. There is also a very competent mobile app which allows you to monitor usage and even invoke the parental control features.
I don’t use the wireless much – most of my house is wired and has a separate mesh wi-fi network (which, by the way, worked absolutely fine with the Asus router), but I did a little testing of the wi-fi and also setup a guest network. It all worked fine – good range and it maintained the connection when moving around the house. Unfortunately, the router is located in a terrible location to provide full house coverage – and so it didn’t, but it would be asking too much of it!
Finally, general performance is good – the ping improved to the internet (35ms down to 20ms) compared to my previous router (an old, but very reliable TP-Link unit). If gaming or streaming is important, then there are QOS features to allow you to prioritise traffic to specific devices on the network (e.g. games console or PC).
It could seem quite complicated to set up, but there is plenty of on screen help and the documentation is pretty clear. Maybe not a router for the complete beginner, but an excellent bit of kit otherwise. (oh yes – and you can change the colours on the front of it! Not important, but fun!)
I have virgin media WiFi which has been very hit and miss depending on where in the house you are. I have previously tried a cheaper booster/repeater with limited success. Having read reviews I was a little concerned about having to change the router settings to modem (which I tried initially without being able to then set up) but I found that simply plugging the router into a socket on the virgin router worked straight away. I set up 2 different names for the 2.4G and 5G output and used the same password as my virgin media router.
I can connect all my mobile devices to the new network (iPad/iPhone etc) and so far the connection has been excellent, not dropping connection anywhere in the house. As you can see from my photo the router is situated on the window sill (at the front of the house) as I didn’t want wires running around the living room. Despite the location, I now get reliable WiFi throughout the house and, for the first time, even get connection in my shed at the top of my garden, which must be about 30meters away.
I bought this exclusively for my son to use with his Quest 2 on Air Link. I wasn’t sure how well it would work, having already tried a couple of older routers I had spare with poor results. This just works so well, he can’t tell the difference between this and the normal wired connection.
I also loved the setup…..I needed to put it into Access Point mode…..this was an option on the first page I saw on first power-up! I had it set up within minutes.
I haven’t used it in normal router mode, but I’m confident it would be excellent.
For Virgin Media customers; I must say to change your set up ASAP. Originally I had the TP link Deco e4R in a two floor detached house. Personally, I’m a gamer, not competitive, not casual. I used to experience bad lag spikes with the Deco system in place whilst the VM media hub 3 was in router mode, nonetheless it just didn’t cut it and on occasion I would go log off completely as it was unbearable ( once had 2500ms ). Furthermore, I bought this to go in my room (top floor) and the TP link AC1750 Dual band router. The connection is perfect now, I get full 110mbps speeds whilst hard wired and about 20-40 ping. For example, on overwatch its 40ms but on Warzone its about 20-28ms which is great.
The Virgin media box is now in modem mode which was super easy to do. The only CON I can say is, I had to get a 20m Ethernet up to my room but you can buy adhesive clips or nails along stairs or feed it through a window, whichever you prefer.
Apart from that, I hope it stays this way, but as a primary judgement its a 10/10. Also, the Asus router homepage could be updated a bit more but its fine overall.
Hope this helped.
Replace your Virgin router with this or similar!! Issues galore with wired and wireless through Virgin intermittent internet service, their hub 3 then hub 4 routers since Sept 2020!! have been solved (so far) with this router. Needs some technical knowledge to set up as interface is clear but quite advanced. Once it’s set up (after phoning a mate to help in my case) you’ll love your internet again. Never had WiFi extend to back garden before, but I do now. I now have a constant signal throughout house with multiple devices running. Apple app is good for tweaking and seeing what’s connected with live speeds. Tech friend said it may be good to reboot once a month to keep things in check. Fingers crossed it stays this good.
I pay for 500Mbps with Virgin but was getting around 300 in the same room as the Hub 3 which reduced rapidly anywhere else in the house. I would actually even lose connection occasionally in my gaming room which is only one floor above the Hub 3 and when I did connect I’d often see speeds of well under 50Mbps.
But once I put the Hub 3 in modem mode and set up the RT-AX82U I immediately got speeds of 500Mbps in every section of my house (which is a 1300sq.ft new build with three floors).
I’m amazed with the performance, design, user interface, and how easy it was to set up. I have zero complaints and would recommend it to anybody who is not getting the advertised speeds from their ISP throughout their home.
P.S. It’s perhaps worth mentioning for those on a budget that it may be possible to get the same improvement in range/speed from the cheaper RT-AX55, but I was willing to pay a premium for the RT-AX82U to ensure that I was not disappointed.
I was having tonnes of issues with the Virgin Media Hub 2.0. I contacted VM and they upgraded it to a Hub 3.0 but the same issues were occurring. Intermittent connection drops, dead spots less that 4m from the router, poor wifi speeds. So, I decided it was time to deal with the real issue, the VM Hub is a terrible wifi router.
After putting the VM Hub into modem mode, this router was easy to install. The web OS for the router is simple and intuitive and offers a wide range of customisation options. My wifi coverage is now consistent around the house and the speeds are more than double that obtainable through the VM Hub wifi (230Mbps which is my max connection speed). Wifi 6 works well with enabled devices and the 5Ghz channel is widely available (as is the 2.4Ghz).
The only thing I could criticise it for is that the styling isn’t exactly to my taste but it’s tucked away out of sight anyway.
Spent months reviewing/researching different routers, brands and models (IT professional). Eventually opted for this model, when it finally came back into stock! Took a little bit of work to migrate my settings from the old router, I’ve always bought high end Netgear routers, but this Asus unit is in a different league. Same as everyone else, working from home this past year, with myself, the wife, lots of gadgets such as Sky Q, Alexa, NAS units, printer, tablets, gaming, streaming audio, Netflix/Prime, MS Teams etc. Poor Netgear was not coping, and getting old.
Sky Q drop-outs on wireless were starting to get very annoying & frequent, once the Asus was in place (over a specially planned Sat morning outage) and controlling all networked devices, we haven’t had one issue with load/wi-fi and none of our laptops ever dropped out during the working day, with heavy Teams usage too — wife delighted. The Asus unit is a simple or complex as you want it, its has numerous cool features that i would find useful, but others may not even care or need them. Cannot recommend this highly enough, but also make sure to update the firmware when setting up.
Before this I had purchased and used a Netgear Nighthawk WiFi 6 Mesh WiFi system, with one main downstairs and one satellite upstairs. The signal on that was great, no complaints or whatsoever. But the gaming experience was horrible, it would have random high pings every now and then. At first I thought it was caused my PCs WiFi card, so I tried many things including changing the drivers and such. Nothing had worked. It wasn’t possible to test on my other devices because I can’t play the same game on them. I lived with this for about 3 months using my 5g hotpot when I game, until one day it just decides to not detect Internet from my modem at all. Tried many things, reset many many times and gave up.
Now I have to praise the Amazon service. I wasn’t able to contact customer support for netgear as it was out of support warranty (not the same as product warranty and I never knew it was a thing). So I decided to message Amazon customer support. Like many cases they solved for me before, this one was no exception. They let me RETURN AND REFUNDED the whole amount even though it was used! Without any questions asked! Never had this level of customer service anywhere else.
Anyways, getting out of topic here.
This router however, has been awesome since I’ve bought it. It was very easy to setup and it has nearly the same signal coverage as the mesh system which says a lot. Turns out I don’t need a mesh but rather one router that works well with great coverage.
Not only was the coverage great, it is packed with features compared to netgear one. With things like VPN, open port gaming, prenatal control and many many more, all stock firmware and easily accessible. Even the app is very handy and easy to use, at least for me. It really does take gaming seriously with what it has to offer. Whether you game on desktop or mobile it has you covered. The ping issue has never happened again and it felt as if the ping was even reduced a little (maybe just me haha).
Overall it’s a great buy if you want one for gaming or even just everyday use. My house isn’t that huge but it has 2 floors, 4 bedrooms with kitchen being extended to the garden. Not sure of the exact measurement as it’s my parents house but I guess it fits in as a small to medium size.
Works like a dream.Better coverage than the BT router and rock solid performance with 25 wifi devices and another 6 on Ethernet on a tp link hub. Can reach now even at back garden which is after 2 walls and then another 8m distance. Works fine with all my wifi5 devices and our 3 WiFi 6 devices(two mobiles and one MS surface).even at the most remote location signal is maxed out at 64/12 which is what I am getting with Ethernet cable next to the router and what speed BT router has locked. No need for expensive mesh systems (had a BT whole home and had almost same coverage but every now and then a satellite would loose connection and needed hard reset.with the Asus I am managing same devices, with no hick ups and same coverage on our 3 bed detached house and back garden.outside the front room, approx 12 away from Asus router, speedtest gave 62/12 which is exceptional.super happy so far, considering I got it on a deal for 140
Excellent router with the added benefit of WiFi 6. Did research before getting this as my virgin hub was dropping wifi signal on daily basis even after an engineer came out. I noticed improvement in wifi signal throughout the house even in the garden but what was even better was not having to use my WiFi range extender in the furthest rooms. It’s a great Router and does what I expected with a dedicated gaming ethernet port at the back. Would definitely recommend but also ensure you do your research as to what is best for your requirements. It is the main router now with the virgin hub just the modem.
I bought this router to future proof my home as it has WIFI6/802.11ax. I have to say this thing is a beast! It’s signal strength far surpasses my ISP Virgin router. With my virgin router, my PS4 got around 20-30mbps and now it gets 80-90mbps, and my connection speed at home is 100mbps. Super happy about that. The Asus web settings for their router is amazing. This is my first Asus router and I love the amount you can do with your router. A lot of the settings you won’t touch, but it’s super easy to setup.
I did find my Sonos system isn’t a huge fan of Wifi 6 being turned on even with Dual band and it hates the Asus Network Protection feature. Apart from that I can’t fault the router as that is more of a Sonos problem than the routers problem. Couldn’t praise this router more and will forever use Asus routers from now on and whenever this router ever gets old, I can just use it as a mesh point.
This is a fantastic router. I already had one of these as my main router and wanted a faster connection to my other Ethernet enabled devices rather than use homeplugs. My AV2 homeplugs were giving me about 12-15MB/s transfer which is ok but I wanted faster.
I could have ran Ethernet cabling which would have been a lot of effort. Even upgrading my machines to use AX WiFi modules was only sub-par because no WiFi module uses all 4 available mimo streams, only 2 so your throughput is halved straight away.
I opted then to get a second router for the purpose of using the AImesh feature. This in turn uses all 4 available AX streams for a theoretical 4.8gbps connection.
In practise because of distance and walls/objects ect it’s about 2.4gbps. But it’s still faster than my homeplugs and can saturate gigabit Ethernet.
Experiencing problems with WiFi signal or drop outs from Virgin’s SuperHub3?
I was getting the same, even in a small footprint house. Speed testing the connection in every room the signal would spike and some rooms wouldn’t get any signal at all. Not good when you pay for an ultra fast connection.
After a bit of research a lot of people were stating ASUS routers were good at fixing the problem so I ordered this RT-AX82U. Getting it out of the package it looks like a stealth fighter and with its RGB lighting it does come across as quite flashy! Setup was incredibly easy, I set my Virgin SH3 to modem mode and then setup the router through the ASUS app.
Once fully working I went round the house speed testing again and EVERY room was now showing as ultra fast!
If you’re suffering with this problem I’d recommend this router!
After a lot of phone calls to BT, asking them why my BT Fibre 900 package I was only getting between 40mbps-250mbps I was about ready to give up. I’m paying around 50 a month for a package that i’m not getting I was never seeing the ‘garanteed’ speeds of 450mbps download. BT said it could be for loads of reasons, but said other devices on the network are likely to be slowing it down. I tested them on this and said disable wifi and I’ll go Ethernet then and lets see the speeds. It didn’t improve, in fact it got worse! To cut a long story short, I decided to try this router to see if it’d make any difference, I wasn’t expecting it to. Not only are the speeds over twice as quick, the speeds are so much more consistant. With the old router it might be 150mbps one moment but 40mbps the next. The results below speak for themselves:
Standing next to router BEFORE upgrade: Download: 275mbps
Standing next to router AFTER upgrade: 550mbps
Upstairs in my room 20 meters away BEFORE upgrade: 100-150mbps
Upstairs in my room 20 meters away AFTER upgrade: 250-350mbps
Ethernet connection BEFORE upgrade: 150-350mbps (Yep, Ethernet was often slower than WiFi…)
Ethernet connection AFTER upgrade: 700-900mbps
Upload via Ethernet was capped at 10mbps before upgrade now it’s 110mbps.
These results speak for themselfes. I don’t often leave reviews on Amazon, but i thought i must do for this one. BT have done nothing for me, but it has confirmed for me that their hardware is not up to the job. Now with this router it’s truly unlocked the capability of the package. God knows why BT don’t just release a decent Router to address this….
Amazing 5ghz signal but experiencing loss of signal on the 2.4ghz multiple times throughout the day. It comes back for a short while when I reboot/change a setting but it doesn’t truly fix the issue. ASUS support have been rubbish to say the least. Currently going through a refund with Amazon as a replacement is not an option. So disappointed as the 5ghz has been amazing throughout the house.
Edit 18th Jan
So the 2.4ghz signal was being affected by my son’s PS4. Once he changed the DNS settings it all worked fine. However i did buy a replacement as the first router had issues with the 2.4 signal even with the changed DNS settings. 2nd model has worked perfectly and it provides strong signals throughout the house.
Bought this RT-AX82U recently as my Virgin speed increase from 200Mb to 500Mb was not evident in the speed tests. I have my Virgin Hub 3 set to modem mode which fed into my oldest router, a Netgear WNDR-4300. This is an old wireless-n device, but I used it only as a wired router (and DHCP server) to feed my main switch and then on to my ASUS AC3200 and ASUS AC88U wireless access points. Everything was good for years but the recent speed increase did not show up in speed tests.
I decided that the processing power of the old Netgear was probably not capable of the higher traffic speed so I replaced it with this inexpensive (at 134 quid offer price) upgrade. Boom – suspicions confirmed and now I’m receiving the full 500Mbps plus. If you have a high speed contract and multiple simultaneous devices connected you’re going to need a newer router just to process the traffic, as I found.
I’ve now replaced this AX82U from being the main router on the network with an ASUS AX86U (quad core instead of tri-core in the AX82U) and used it to retire the next oldest router, the AC3200, so the AX86U is functioning well as the main router with this AX82U and my existing AC88U as two wireless access points. I’ve tested the AX82U in both router and AP modes and it performs well in both modes. All my ASUS routers are now mesh compatible but I don’t run the wireless mesh configuration because I installed CAT 6 cable in the house to connect the access points back to the main router.
Can’t test it beyond the 500Mbps limit of my Virgin connection but everything works fine – even the light show, which can be turned off. Don’t have any AX clients so I have AX turned off but everything is fine at full AC connection speed. I’m just starting to build an AX enabled PC so I’ll test out the connection speed soon. Note that the AX86U has a 2.5G ethernet port for future higher speed connections and bandwidth.
Two people working from home on separate VPN connections and constant MS Teams connections with child also on remote learning from school. No problems or hiccups and the AX82U gives you plenty of room for reserved IP addresses when set to default router mode. Can’t fault any of my ASUS routers.
Massive improvement from my Virgin Media Hub 3 + Powerline with access point – TP-Link AV600s
I’ve replaced my virgin media hub, 2 powerline adapters and one with an access point with this single router.
Coverage is better throughout the house and throughput is massively up on the whole.
I can have a lot of devices connected to my router – sometimes 30+ (mostly very low bandwidth home automation devices) and the VM Hub would constantly struggle with long delays at times to connect or ‘pauses’ in connectivity – this router is head and shoulders above in terms of device connectivity – especially on the 2,4Ghz band where coverage is massively improved.
It is now clear my powerlines and access point were not really increasing range that much at all and probably introducing handover and throughput problems.
Recommeded.
I used to use Super Hub 3.0 as my main router, where I quickly notice its limitation. There after I decided to purchase a Synology router which claimed that it can covers up to 3500 sq ft, which I do not believe as my Virgin Media hub a slightly better range than Synology oddly.
Since I have a decent size 3 bedroom house, I didn’t think a single router will be enough and decided to go through a mesh router but I quickly realise that those router setup are fairly expensive and that’s where I came across Asus’ Mesh feature and from there it let me try this router out and I have been very impressed by it so far.
It too early for me cover every point but overall AX82U has done a better job than any other routers I have come across and really happy with it.
Fantastic router that replaced my Hub 3.0 which is a must as I’m a gamer with 5 members of family in my house. The standard hub that comes with Virgin Media doesn’t give a consistent 500Mbps through WiFi. It became more inconsistent the further I got away from the hub and it went all the way down to 70Mbps. As soon as set up and turned on this router with my hub in modem mode, I did the same experiment and I’m now getting a consistent 500Mbps and sometimes even more (as shown in the picture). If you’re a gamer like myself or just have a lot of hardwares connected to your standard network provider hub, then I definitely recommend getting this router. Our household is busy with devices connected constantly to this router and it still stays at the same download/upload speeds that our provider provides. ALSO please note – Gamers to get the best gaming experience, I definitely recommend that you use Ethernet cables, it a MUST!
After getting countless wireless connection drops while working from home, I got frustrated and decided to purchase a high-end router. After setting up the ASUS router and using it for more than a week I have no connection issues and the wireless speed improved significantly. I used to get connection drops with the 5GHz network when using the Superhub, even when the router was in the next room, but now I get the full 200Mbps speed with the new router! Also, when using the Superhub my work laptop’s connection seemed to drop often due to using a VPN (not quite sure why) but now I have zero connection drops.
For Virgin Media users to set up your new router: type 192.168.0.1 to your browser and switch your Superhub to modem mode. (After you switch to modem mode, you will have to connect to 192.168.100.1 to go back to the Superhub setting). Connect an Ethernet cable to the WLAN port on the Asus router from the Superhub and set up your router. Make sure to reboot your Superhub after your router is set up. I did not do this and my ASUS router was failing to connect to the internet.
Highly recommended!
It’s early days but this seems absolutely phenomenal. Our ISP-supplied router isn’t up the the job of handling lots of devices. I bought this in combo with a separate modem, which was a but of a gamble because I was only 80% sure I knew what I was doing. Setup was extremely easy and the router is quietly working away with 20 devices connected. I’ve already seen a performance increase in WiFi speed on my phone from where I am now typing this review.
I’ve never really had an aftermarket router before with which to compare, but this one already seems to be an incredibly capable piece of kit.
The user interface when you connect to the router seems really good too. Lots of options and features.
RT-AX82U AX5400 Dual Band WiFi 6 Gaming Router
Router arrives boxed with a network cable to connect to a modem, a manual, and a power block. The aerials are fixed so nothing to do there. The power block is very small so I assume the router uses very little power. Oddly the power block is in several pieces and you have to add the correct plug unit for your country. There are two, one is the UK, I suppose the other is European.
I have to say that the router is not particularly impressive to look at. It certainly does not look like the money it cost. I refrain from saying “cheap” but yeah, not expensive for sure! It’s also ( well at least to me ) surprisingly small and light. But, in a darkened room and the LEDs on it looks amazing! Reminds me of the heads of the machines in War of the World. Creepy stuff!
The user interface is good, and if you have had an Asus router before you will be 100% familiar with it. There really isn’t a lot of difference with this router and any other Asus except perhaps for the lack of WTF. A few things are missing, but a few things have been added too, so it’s all good. There are tons of features.
The router comes with a thick manual, but before you get excited like I did, it’s only two pages long but in hundreds and hundreds of different languages. It looks like an encyclopedia but it’s really not. Typical Asus, there is no documentation and it really leaves you wanting information. Enrolling on their global forum is a must.
Setup is automatic. The moment you open a browser it asks you a series of questions. In passing, it works on both wired or wireless. Be ready with some passwords you want to use and any user names and passwords you might need for your ISP. When the router finishes it’s initial setup, write down the address of the router! I didn’t and later found out that it assigns a really unusual number and I couldn’t find the configuration web page again. If that happens you have to manually reset the router ( pin hole on the back – hold for two seconds ) and start again.
The performance is very good indeed. You notice right from the start that the configuration pages from the router load in almost instantly. the wireless is not the strongest but it’s good for it’s price. Lets face it, if you are a gamer then you are using a wired port and the wireless is for not so serious stuff, like grandma’s laptop. Wired, the performance is really good. Better than my old router which is the older AC88U. I guess it must come down to the chips inside. My old AC88U had a higher build quality and was a much more impressive machine, yet it’s slower.
I really, really like the addition of priority devices. That is an extremely welcome addition to the software. This basically allows you to specify anything that you use for playing games and priority will always be given to that device. Automatically the device plugged in to the “game” port gets that priority but you can delete that or add other devices as you wish. Love that!
The only big downside to the router is that there no Merlin for it and there probably never will be because its the wrong chipset manufacturer for Merlin, but as yet I haven’t stumbled over any problems.
The router runs surprisingly cool. My old AC88U used to get as hot as toast.
Nearly a month since I bought it now and it hasn’t made any mistakes. It just sits quietly in the corner of the room doing what it is supposed to be doing without error.
Do I like it? Yes. I had some doubts about moving to a cheaper router but I have no regrets. It’s fantastic value and the wired performance is amazing. It’s not short on features and I definitely recommend it.
When the router was first released it was fantastic value for money, but now in 2022 the price has risen so much it’s difficult to say that it’s fantastic value any more. It is a great router but it seems somewhat over-priced now.
This router is really well made: it does what promised on the box, it has a decent OS which lets you setup properly the network with a discrete firewall and a good customisable QoS.
The router sports a fairly good CPU, 512MB of RAM and support to VPN networks, which is a good feature set for a performant wifi setup and considering that we are two people working from home who both need a reliable network.
The only obnoxious thing are the RGB light in the front vent, thankfully you can turn them off through the app, speaking of which I have to say it could be made a little bitt better, it feels gimmicky for some reason.
I have witnessed no problems in temperatures nor connection issues so far: the router is cool, quiet and the connection is super-stable. I bought it more than a month a go and in almost 7 weeks I can fairly recommend this.
The only extra feature I would like to see is an integrated network speed test on the router itself, that would be useful to properly check network speeds without having to connect physically the laptop to the router (which is wall mounted in my house).
So here is just a few words on my experience so far with this router. I’ve recently had Virgin Internet installed, specifically the 500 meg package which is the fastest download speeds in my area. However the router included with the service is shockingly bad (super hub 3). Yes I was getting 500 meg over wired connection, but even stood 1 meter away from the router I was only getting 140mb download speeds over WiFI even on 5GHz. Heading upstairs I was getting about 90mb on average. After speaking to Virgin and wasting my time I hit the forums. The main suggestion was switch the virgin router to modem mode and buy your own router. After taking that advice and a week of browsing I settled on this one as it was new to the market and had WiFi 6. Well I’m so glad I did, the speed test on the picture I included was over WiFi on my WiFi 6 capable PC. But the PC is actually upstairs so I’m getting 500mb download speeds over WiFi upstairs which is brilliant. On my phone I’m now getting an average of 340mb download speeds up from 120 to 140mb. The download speeds on my Xbox One X are around 450mb up from about 200mb so I have to say just on the download speeds alone I’m happy. The router is feature rich with a plethora of settings to mess around with. If you are on Virgin, can take advantage of WiFi 6 and are looking for a great router with excellent features, a big signal boost and faster speeds then look no further.
