Its pretty fantastic especialy for the price however my only gripe is the speakers are on the back. everything you hear has already bounced off a wall at least once giving a muffled feel to the sound quality. It bothers me just enough to want to go by sperate speakers.
Having come from 1080p gaming this was a revelation out of the box its crap you need to download the icc profile from rtings.com and follow the instructions and WOW what a difference fantastic colours pin sharp detail and 170HZ.
1 dead pixel somewhat close to the center of the screen(within factory regulations but still sucks because it is distracting when gaming), some settings need a bit of research because it is unclear what it does and a lot of it leads to quality loss. Besides that it’s a great monitor and worth the price.
I was having issues with intermittent 2 second black screens while gaming on a Freesync compatible monitor (I have an nVidia gpu) so I went looking for a g sync compatible monitor with decent colour and this one has been the perfect solution. The colour isn’t perfect on this monitor out of the box, but once dialed in, the IPS panel blows me away. This is coming from TN and VA panels, washed out colours and horrible ghosting respectively. None of that on this one, its beautiful, crisp and accurate. Couple of things, while acceptable, are not as good as my previous monitors – the built in speakers are crap, and it’s fiddly changing inputs to different devices, but I’m accepting those issues thanks to the picture quality
I am 62 years old and do not game so you may wonder why I have bought a gaming monitor. After reading nearly all the reviews I discovered that a very high percentage of people who ordered this one received them with no dead pixels and a very low amount of ‘bleed’.
The quality while watching 4k videos from the likes of Netflix and YouTube is amazing.
Yes, I am happy with my purchase and, from the unit I received, I can thoroughly recommend it.
I’m running this monitor an AMD R9 Fury X using DisplayPort 1.2 as the optimum connection for the moment. This means that I do not have access to HDR, the full 144hz (I’m capped at 60), and some other features just yet. Once the AMD RX7900XTX releases, I will be upgrading to that, and will try to remember to revise this review when I can to better cover the full featureset.
With that said, moving from a 27″ 2560×1440~144hz TN monitor has been great because the colours, the viewing angles, and the pixel density (visual clarity) is incredible. Despite being 1″ bigger than my old monitor, it provides approximately 1.5x the pixel density with 2.25x the resolution, and it’s noticed immediately.
The monitor is a true joy to look at and in my personal set-up, and the PPI x distance from my screen (30 inches away) means that it achieves greater than ‘retina’ effect. (for reference, this monitor at 28″ requires 22 inches of distance to be classified as ‘retina’ by Apple trademark standards).
One issue with this monitor is getting the Display Port connection to work properly. I managed to get it working, and then it stopped, and now it works again. Can I explain why this happened and how I fixed it? No, not really. I just had to keep attempting everything I could to get it to connect. Changing the cable, unplugging and replugging, changing the monitor feed to DP1.2 instead of 1.4, rebooting my PC many, many times…
In the end, something clicked and the monitor has worked flawlessly since. Googling it didn’t provide much help other than letting me know it’s not an unheard of issue, but it works now.
Because of this, I don’t turn it off using the power button on the back of the screen, but thankfully it does have an automatic sleep timer where it will go into standby mode if no signal activity is detected (and power up when there IS signal detected) – while also not having any indicator lights.
For some people, there lack of an indicator may be offputting, but for me, I think it’s a plus because it just looks cleaner.
Overall, I’m really loving it, and definitely recommend this monitor so far.
been using this monitor for over a year now and not a problem with it, playing competitive games like overwatch, counter strike and rainbow 6 siege, all feel smooth and easily visible along with being able to enjoy single player games at high refresh rates
I bought this for work, and use it for general web browser, emails, documents etc.
I switched from an iMac to PC, so previously was on a mac ips screen. I find this screen has less glare to it, and im really happy with how sharp images/text is.
I notice some people mentioned the sturdiness, but I have it sitting on my desk, and I cant imagine it would move unless I moved it. There no vibration for example when Im typing.
The controls for contrast/brightness are hidden behind the unit, which is a bit cumbersome. However, once you have it setup, you never touch them again.
Really great screen for the money, and im more than comfortable using it 7.5 hours per day.
So yeah, this is basically THE monitor to get if u don’t wanna spend over 400 ect. The image quality is great, it preforms very well and I don’t regret purchasing it. Not to mention its a smooth 144hz which is an added bonus. It also has some in monitor settings to spice things up even more. I would defenitely recommend anyone who wants to get an amazing gaming experience to buy this. Does get a bit dirty with dust but just clean the screen and u should be fine 🙂
But if these are the specifications you are after then the ASUS VG249Q is perfect!
PROs
– High quality reliable product – as always from ASUS
– Cheap price
– IPS display – great colours and refresh rate
– 144Hz refresh rate – important for gaming
– 150mm Height Adjustable Stand (HAS) [515mm max. display height] – super important for tall people like me (other displays had a max. display height of 350mm)
– Built-in speakers – the speakers aren’t amazing quality, but I feel it’s a bit of a bonus just having them
– A DisplayPort (DP) and HDMI input
CONs
Not many CONs to report, but 3 niggly items might be:
– 250cd/m2 1000:1 low brightness and contrast ratios – (other displays had better ratios such as 300-400cd/m2 and 3000:1)
– No built-in headphone output
– “TUF” brand’s style is a little tacky – This is just my own taste, but the “TUF” brand has a slightly tacky appearance targeted towards gamers. I’d love to see this available with a professional, sleek look.
Overall it’s good, but it does have some quirks to keep in mind.
I got this for the rotating mechanism which has been useful for writing/ testing mobile games. However while rotating, the power cable can easily come loose. While not a deal breaker it can get annoying.
One thing to watch out on is flashing images (often seen in older games) can leave a ghosted image on screen. You need to set the monitor to a gaming setting to avoid that. I also noticed a ghosting trail if there are moving objects in front of a plain background.
Apart from that it’s worked well overall. And it’s a good price for what you get.
Bought this monitor for use with PS5 unfortunately due to the PS5 not supporting 1440p and the monitor not supporting 1080p @120Hz I was stuck with 1080p @ 60Hz. If I wanted that kind of performance I could pay a lot less hence I returned the item. That said if you were to use it for a PC setup I’m sure it would be a great monitor.
All round excellent (probably best) hdmi 2.0 monitor for next gen consoles (currently using for PS5). Best selling feature is theh downscale capability from 4k to 2k for the PS5 despite the console not having the capability to play at 1440p (video output displays 2160p).
Would be 10/10 without one issue, very rarely – but frustrating when it occurs – the screen will go black for 2/3 seconds mid game as if resetting and then the picture will return. It ruins the experience especially when you don’t know when it will occur as how rare it happens. The hdmi is tested and works fine along with the PS5. Can not find a solution to this problem.
To note I’ve tried this running from a 1050ti and also a 3080ti and it’s great on both at 280hz
There is a fault, when playing xbox series s at 1440p with 120hz and FPS boost, my screen on occasions will go blank for a second or 2, only occasionally. But it is a bit concerning. I’m worried it will start happening more often.
Can anyone tell me why this would be happening and is there a solution.
I’ve tried turning off HDR and FPS boost but the picture quality goes down.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
The response times of the XB271HU are noticeably better than the VG27AQ. I reckon the panel is if not identical, very similar. The difference is that the XB271HU has had a lot more effort put into the pixel transition voltage curve tuning, whereas the VG27AQ is a bit slap and dash. You can clearly see this by looking at the pixel transition response curves on various review sites. And it is noticeable in day to day use if they are side by side. If they aren’t side by side, then anybody other than very technical people like myself would be able to tell a difference. Thus, this monitor is great value. Also, the ULMB strobe backlight on the VG27AQ is crap at 165Hz. Very poorly tuned and actually increases motion blur in my opinion. Thus, I would just use it on normal.
It works fine but it was a pain to get gsync working, they provide you with a standard hdmi cable that doesnt support it. I ended up buying a separate display port cable but it wouldn’t let me use 144hz and i had to mess about to get it to work.
The monitor has some pretty bad backlight bleed on the corners of the display as well, its noticeable in dark scenes. The colors are pretty crips though and the monitor has a lot of options.
Great monitor, however it does not raise on it’s own stand as high as the ROG Strix 27 inch equivalent, it stops about 4cm lower. So if like me you wanted to use it as a second monitor to match the ROG, which I use as my main monitor and have it raised, this model might not reach the hight you expect. It also takes some fiddling to match the screens colours as selecting the same setting in the menu does not match the colours, so must be done manually.
Now the bind. I had read about build quality. More exactly the very poor control of items leaving the factory. Dead pixels being the most common. Mine did not have that and it was several hours of use and testing that I noticed the fault. Once noticed it’s too bad to ignore so it’s been returned and replaced. More on the second later….
In the picture above you will hopefully see the fault, it was very tricky to take an accurate picture of it.
The frame around the screen which sits inside the case is warped, BADLY. Down the left hand side you will notice the strip bordering the screen is mostly silver sheen, except for the very middle, it’s darker, near black. This is the bulge, about 3mm+ outwards. This in turn you will see makes a lighter screen distortion reaching towards the middle of the screen. On dark or black frames it’s terrible and there is no way this should have left the factory in this condition. This must have been production damage as the packaging is, was, 100% unmarked even after delivery.
The right hand side bulges out in the exact same way by about 1mm but does not cause screen distortion.
I’ve always rated Asus products and have a still working 12 year old motherboard / GPU setup I loved so much it’s now a home hub. This has not dented my trust in Asus as I think they’re allowed one faulty product in what is now thirty plus buys.
But again, this should never have left the factory in this state so be aware. Worth buying every time but might be faulty.
EDIT : Second one arrived perfect. Amazon would not return and replace so I returned then rebought. All handled very quickly. Delivered on a Sunday.
Bumping this from 2 stars to 5 based on the performance of the second monitor.
UPDATE 2: The dead pixel is… gone! It turns out it wasn’t even the monitor, it was STEAM! Specifically it was something to do with one instance of Steamwebhelper. Every time this happens, I kill all instances of Steamwebhelper and it goes away. Back to 5 stars it is 🙂
UPDATE: I have to take back my “no complaints” part – I’ve only had this monitor for about a month and there’s already a dead pixel – and it’s not simply one pixel, it’s one black pixel with a sort of “pinch” around it, almost as if the screen has been hit with something (and it definitely hasn’t). Picture attached (excuse the quality).
I have no complaints about this monitor. It does what it says on the tin, and is great quality too, all for a decent price. This is my first time using a 144Hz monitor and man it’s so smooth and responsive, no matter how fast I move the mouse I can still see it highlight the things it moves over. In the few games I’m able to play at over 60FPS (thanks GPU shortage), the difference is noticeable and it’s a lot easier to see and track moving objects i.e. players, as well as line up my shots.
The colours on this monitor are also pretty good. Now I’m not a colour guy, but I can see subtle differences and I can recognise banding, and the only time I ever see (a little) banding is in Steam, which may actually be their fault for not using a perfect gradient rather than the monitors fault. I did notice that it handles blues slightly worse than other colours, and Steam’s background is blueish, but again that may be my fault for not configuring properly rather than the monitors fault.
Overall this is a really good monitor at a really good price. Buy it.
EDIT (new review 22/03/23)
2 years owning this, it has developed a ‘stuck pixel’ (tiny red dot that never disappears). its not too distracting but something to be aware of. i’ve never had a monitor get one of these before, im very careful with my gear, so i suspect it is the quality of the display. main issue i have had with this monitor is the black levels because it’s quite reflective of your environment (my office is a white room).
old review below —
straight out of the box the presets or profiles are not the most colour accurate, a slight green or cyan cast was noticeable. Luckily I have a colour calibrator (i1 pro) and now its looking great. it looks almost identical to how my Asus Pro Art series monitor did but with super quick response time. very happy with it for 450
there is noticeable backlight bleed in the bottom corners but I have kinda got used to it. just dont edit your photos in full screen, use the cleanest part of the panel (the center) and you’ll be fine. its also wider than i thought for some reason, im fairly certain my old monitor was 27″ but this feels wider which is nice. thin bezels. doesnt use one of those big power-supplies and doesnt have VGA input so you need to have a MOBO or GPU with hdmi or displayport. also the hdmi wont run past 60hz so use the displayport cable.
The menu was easy to use, just took a couple of seconds to figure out, the menu shows what the buttons do above each button which can change according to what you’re looking at.
Assembly was great! The leg that holds the monitor was pre installed and all it took was attaching the base with one screw which was done by hand, the screw includes a handle to do it by hand.
Its a great monitor overall, easy to use, easy to assemble. This monitor is pretty much full metal and somewhat heavy.
Careful with the sellers because some may not provide the same accessories in the box.
If anything goes wrong this will be updated.
My only issue with the monitor is that it does take a few seconds to boot up and detect my pc (my pc often turns on quicker than the monitor) and there is nothing for cable management at the back.
Even with these issues I would recommend the monitor.
After sending back the VA curved panel of this screen the ips is outstanding the colours pop the refresh rate amazing, there is some ghosting in certian games but only badly optomised ones like 7 days to die, but in doom eternal at 165fps the game looks outstanding,
The speakers arnt great but not terrible either ok for light use like watching the news or cartoons, its not very loud,
The hdr just seems to brightern the screen up and over saturates certian colours due to no dimming zones, but it dose look good in games just dont turn it on in desktop, most games still see it as hdr acreen and turns it on,
For the best picture quality i suggests you calibrate the screen colours or just google a screen profile which i did and wow,
My only nag is the ips glow its not bad by any means and can only see it when its dark and watching say netflix but in a full screen game i couldnt even see it,
Great flexibility in the stand bearly any stand wobble,
All round this is a daily driver screen great for gaming, browsing the Internet and media consumption, and id also say light media creatio
I bought this monitor for my new obsession with FPS – namely Call of Duty Modern Warfare.
Just to get things out of the way – if you haven’t gamed with >60 Hz monitor (like I did before this buy) you will be flabbergasted as soon as you plug this thing on.. and yes you cannot go back to 60 Hz. I have a 32″ 4K 60hz monitor and while it looks really nice, gaming at 60Hz is now unbearable on it..
The screen looks amazing and inline with the TUF series.
The onscreen display is easy to navigate and has many option to customize. The only thing missing is the gamma correction function which is not there.
The monitor needs 100% calibrating and you can do that through googling or going to display ninja / rtings/ other website you prefer.
Overall the functions of: overdrive to 165 Hz / Elmb/ ASCR are nice.
It has HDR function but in all honesty it’s non existent. I would describe this as HDR ready rather than true HDR monitor since there is no local dimming function.
I am pleased with the monitor – there are other monitors from Asus some that are better and some that are worse – choose your budget and go for what you can. My opinion is that you need to do your research before you buy one and always keep in mind one question and one question only. What are you going to be using this monitor for?
As a monitor for everyday use I d say that it’s too bright and maybe tiring for your eyes. As a gaming monitor is very good.
Remember to set it up through its OSD and then at Windows / graphics adapter. Also get the color calibration icc profile from Asus and use it with windows.
Happy gaming !
Overwatch at 144hz is amazing! I haven’t noticed any motion blur or ghosting and don’t even notice screen tearing at that speed and that’s without G-Sync/FreeSync active.
I’m still messing around with the settings but find the only setting that needed adjusting was the saturation.
There are some default display modes (Cinema, Scenery, FPS, etc), I think Cinema is the best and just needed a little tweaking for my personal taste. One ever-so-slight annoyance is when you turn the Blue Light Filter off, the monitor reverts back to the “Racing Mode” which looks awful and have to set it back to my preferred one.
REGARDING UK POWER PLUG ISSUE:
A lot of people left reviews about the monitor not being supplied with an UK power cable and only had an EU one
Mine arrived with both plugs but the UK one had the wrong connector on the end. I already had a spare kettle lead around so was ok but I contacted Amazon to let them know who will be making sure the correct UK cable put in the box since it seems to be added after the box has left the factory that makes the monitors.
This is a good monitor for shooters, the main issues are the quality control of the screens. First one had 7 pixels with defects ( either all 3 subpixels dead or just 1 or 2) and a darker spot towards the top right corner. The replacement had 2 stuck pixels in the middle of the screen, one green and one red ,8 pixels with defects and 3 small white spots. At this price point you expect better quality control especially since their warranty says less than 5 dead pixels and 0 stuck pixels…
Otherwise, a new TN panel like on the xf252q refreshes a bit faster and it makes it a bit easier to see in fast movements in CSGO in comparison with this monitor where the image doesn’t seem as crisp in fast movements, but the difference is small. If you don’t play at a very high level you can go with this monitor, it’s better overall tha a TN. You also can tell the difference between 240hz and 280 on this monitor but it only helps you in very fast movements.
Also, make sure you play with vividpixel, I set mine to 5. It’s sharpness and it helps a lot on this monitor.
In general there is little to fault – the 144hz is such a magnificent upgrade coming from 60hz and the IPS panel is vivid with (so far) no light bleeding whatsoever. Also, as Nvidia opened up their GSync system to have FreeSync compatibility (and you have a compatible Nvidia card) you may also find GSync works out of the box! I have unfortunately already gained a dead pixel (black) on one monitor but I’m fairly lucky in that it’s actually right at the top-right corner of the screen so at worst it’s in my peripheral, but on average I barely even notice it.
Fairly straightforwards to mount, though if you plan on doing so you’ll have to actually remove the partial-stand already attached (and find somewhere to store it). It takes the standard VESA 100×100 plate which the majority of mounting systems provide anyways!
In terms of what’s shipped with the box, you get both a UK and EU power cable, alongside an HDMI cable. I knew ahead of time they didn’t ship a DisplayPort cable but considering that you can’t really reach 144hz without it – it’s an absolute waste (so be prepared to buy an additional DP cable). Beyond that, at around 200 (at time of writing) it’s probably the best monitor you can get on the market that gives you all these incredible features. Sure it lacks 2K / 4K but as most machines aren’t capable of doing that for gaming, and most content put out still isn’t reaching 4K anyhow then you’ll find that these are more than good enough!
Overall – this monitor is fantastic value and I genuinely don’t think you’ll be disappointed with it. It does exactly what it says on the tin and even throws in some great features you wouldn’t find on other monitors at this price point!
Lovely monitor but had to return two of them due to bad backlight bleed. The first had terrible bleed especially in the lower left corner that showed even on bright scenes. The 2nd I’m having to return as it has terrible bleed but in 3 corners which is so off putting. Such a shame as it’s a lovely looking monitor and has beautiful colours but the backlight bleed lets it down.
Edit: Decided to keep the second Monitor as overnight the backlight bleed got a lot better, most of it went which was surprising. So will up my star rating as like i said it’s a lovely looking monitor with great picture quality.
This is a high-resolution display that has zero dead pixels (I was worried about this) it is sharp and crisp and happily runs at 2560 x 1440 @ 165Hz, this is higher than advertised and it is flicker-free.
I found a company on the internet that had carried out an in-depth and very extensive review and calibration using “Blur Busters TestUFO Motion Tests and the Data Color Spyder5ELITE Display Calibration System”.
I contacted them via email prior to purchasing this monitor and they were happy to send me the ICC Profile that they had created, this was set as the default within Windows 10 Pro and the result is superb.
I am highly delighted with this monitor as the build quality is far superior to what I was expecting and the ease of setting up and operation makes this an absolute bargain in my opinion.
