What to say about Bang & Olufsen? I can’t say I’m surprised by the product, as it met my expectations, it is exceptional, with extremely high sound quality and also in terms of materials. The only downsides to this headphone are the lack of a case and its non-foldable design, but other than that, I have no complaints, only compliments.
Very good quality, sound is fine. The only weakness is connecting 2 devices. I had Sony M4 which I believe in connecting 2 devices was better. In general I would recommend buying this headphone.
I have the Xbox version of this headset and this one improves on it. The ability to be both connected to a Bluetooth and my phone at the same time is awesome. The sound quality is impeccable and it is made of very high quality materials. It’s light and I have no problems wearing it for 8+ hours of heavy gaming.
Bought this mostly for the ANC and it works. Not as well as airpods pro 2 maybe? (Its hard to compare them really) But I got these because I wanted a gaming headset with noise cancelling because we have this industrial fan in the basement running constantly to circulate air and my old ps4 rig 800s (I use them on ps5) let that noise bleed through. Which isn’t there fault, they’re designed for comfort over everything. And they’re the best in comfort imo. But it was time to upgrade.
Either way, the headphones themselves sound great. Better than the rig 800s. And they can get a little loud than my ears can handle which is nice to know because some of these gaming headsets like the turtle beach 700s max on the loudest setting arnt even close (which i own for my xbox). After setting these up, and using the app, like I’ve read from other reviews elsewhere the app is hit or miss. It works on my phone with no issues, but then I tried on my ipad and it had non-stop issues connecting and errors popping up. And sadly in both it always tells me my battery is like 84 or 81% battery life. I’ve yet to determine if its actually the battery or a glitch with the headphones. I’ll be sure to update this review if it turns out to be the headphones. I’ve already contacted b&o USA number and they’ve opened a ticket for me if I determine its the battery. My personal opinion is its the buggy app but we’ll see.
The only design physical flaw I’ve noticed on these, is the metal part of the left cup wasn’t polished like the right cup. So you can feel the metal circular grooves and its kind of unpleasant to a degree. But such a minor flaw, I’m willing to over look it.
As far as how they sound, they’re really great. The EQ options are kind of terrible in the app for bluetooth. Like I honestly don’t even understand why there are even other options. Cause the standard optimized one is best. It must be very situational for other uses? But I found them very lackluster and did not offer any kind of improvement at all. For gaming via the usb dongle, the eq options are much better. They give you the ability to fine tune it and though I have no idea how to, I know it gives you free range to do so. Unlike the Bluetooth EQ. They are entirely different from each other.
All in all, I really like these headphones. They’re a little tight on my head. And I wear titanium framed glasses with very flexible rubberized tips for your ears. And they don’t hurt or interfere to much. Maybe push down on my nose a bit but it takes a little trial and error moving them slightly and they’re perfect.
I would highly recommend these if you’re into gaming on ps5, they work well. And I bet they’re even better on pc with dolby atmos since its free. All in all, I’m content with this purchase.
Comfy and good material. Dont need the ANC, cups around the ear is more than enough on normal environment usage. Great sound and settings are very flexible through the app. Great battery life per charge. Thou its not worth $499. But grab it when u see it at a lower price.
Oh I was a little skeptical of this headset. Mainly because of the price point. I was very lucky and actually got them on sale for about $300 rather than the hefty price tag of 500+ tax. I wanted to have a reason to return them, but I wanted to try them as well. Comfort wise this headset is so light and the earmuffs feel so comfortable there’s not too much pressure on anything. I love the low profile and simple look. I was used to using Astro a 40s for gaming and those things have big bulky ears they’re heavy and clunky and there’s no noise canceling. this headset was knight and day for me. I mainly use it for gaming and listening to music. And it is amazing on both sides. The directional audio is just perfect for any of my FPS games that heavily rely on sound. And music is like listening to songs that I’ve been listening to my whole life for the first time. I hear all these little things that normally you wouldn’t even have any idea that they are there. Little random guitar, licks, or ambient sound effects, it is added a whole new layer to the music that I listen to. As for the “virtual boom mic” that is also a great selling point. I don’t actually use the virtual boom mic for when I’m gaming and talking to friends through discord and what not, but for phone calls and talk to text stuff while I’m gaming is amazing. I love being able to have my phone and my computer hooked up to the headset at the same time. It’s so convenient to be gaming and to be like, “oh, I need to send a text” and just say hey Siri send text message and just speak it out and say send. The battery life is amazing, on the weekends, I game at least one day for almost the entire day, I will turn that headset on at nine in the morning and it will still be going strong at 40% battery by 10 or 11 at night when I’m about to get off. The noise canceling works well also, and I really put it to the test because where I sit to game is about 4 feet from the laundry area in my home. There is no solid door. It is a pair of by folding doors with wooden slats, so there really is no sound dampening from the wooden doors themselves. But with the laundry going washer and dryer at the same time, yes, I can hear the washer and dryer going but it’s almost like it becomes white noise. When I take the headset off and put it back on when the washer and dryer are going it’s insane the difference . And if I’m playing a game, it’s almost unnoticeable. My only con with this product and it’s not really a huge con, sometimes when moving around you will hear this very light metal clink noise good and it’s something in the headset but I’m not sure what it is. I will stress though it is very minor and I only notice it if there’s absolutely no sound going through the headset at the time so while I’m waiting for a game to start up in the music not playing or there’s a quiet moment on the phone is when you might hear it. I would honestly recommend this to anybody, but I would probably wait for a sale because $500 is a bit much in my opinion. Not to say it’s not worth it but that’s just a lot of money for people who work average jobs and don’t have the best pay.
The moment you put it on your head is heaven, so comfortable and premium materials. Sound is crystal clear. I compared them to Steelseries but this one is more detailed sound and more steady on the head.
Absolutely amazing headset sound quality is superb. Very comfortable. Well worth 279 not sure they are worth the original price what’s 500
Suchawki s bardzo dobrze wykonane, materiay s wysokiej jakoci, w wikszoci wykonane z aluminium a nauszniki wykonane s z najdelikatniejsze skry jakiej w yciu dotykaem.
Ustawianie EQ w aplikacji to art – w trybie do GRANIA mamy do dyspozycji EQ z 5 suwakami, w trybie BT czyli trybie do MUZYKI aplikacja przecza si i ju mamy dostp do pseudo-EQ ktre ma jakie 3 suwaki, gdzie przesuwanie jednego powoduje przesuwanie innego… no poraka.
I just purchased these to replace a set of kraken wired headphones. For music alone I would give 4.5. for comfort a strong 5. And that’s why I will keep them. For gaming a 3. Explosion etc are muddy and the Bluetooth/dongle set up is a nightmare. And the app sucks. They look really good. And the main reason I bought them was for comfort and to be light weight. For this they out wiegh that bad. I just a purchased set of Master and dynamic mw75s for just music. I almost purchased a 1500 dollar set of focals just couldn’t get myself to hit the buy button. But the b&os are not bad really. I am just super picky. For the price they sound really good. And the mic is clear etc. The noise cancelling by the way is about a 3.75 I mean they are not Sony or Bose those folks really know how to do noise cancelling. But these definitely sound better. Any hoo enough rambling.
If you have the money, these are great headphones for gaming. The included USB-C dongle is plug-and-play with PS5 and supports 3D audio.
– Sound is great, with a 5-band EQ in the app if you want to adjust it. There are some preloaded EQ profiles, which can all be tweaked or you can create your own from scratch.
– Very solid connection through the dongle. Very rarely (maybe once a week and I game every day for multiple hours), a loud buzzing sound starts coming through. When this happens, I just turn off the headphones and then turn them back on and everything is fine. There is also dual Bluetooth connectivity, so you can be connected to your phone/tablet/laptop at the same time if you so choose.
– I rated the noise cancellation only four stars because it’s good but not as great as some other headphones I have. However, I didn’t buy these for stellar noise cancelling; I just need enough to block out sounds while I’m in the game. I can say the same for the transparency mode: it’s good but not as good as some others. I usually use transparency mode the most so I can still have a conversation with my family members.
– There is a touch slider on the back of each ear cup. On the right side, the slider controls volume, and the left side controls noise cancelling/transparency and chat/own voice modes. The sliders are easy to control and very responsive. Personally, I prefer buttons for controls, but the sliders work just fine.
– Battery life is impressive! I game for multiple hours every day and I just charge them when I’m done for the day. I’ve had them last up to 16 hours on a single charge.
– Very comfortable, large ear cups, minimal side pressure. Unless you have gigantic ears, you should find these very roomy. I don’t like the inner ear cup to touch my ear and these have plenty of depth.
Overall, I would highly recommend these headphones for any PS5 gamer who wants great sound quality, noise cancellation and comfort. I actually have two pairs, so I’ll always have a backup just in case.
Note: These are my second pair and when I received them, they did not sound like my originals, which I’d had for about ten months. I tried adjusting the EQ and updating the firmware, but they just sounded “muddy” and occasionally had a metallic popping sound in the left ear cup. I exchanged them for another pair, and the new ones sound perfect, just like my originals. So if they don’t sound right to you, please try exchanging for a new pair before giving up on them; seems like some of them just have issues sometimes.
Happy listening and happy gaming!
First I’ll start by describing myself.
I primarily use my headphones at my desk for music/video, and game on PC. I spend a lot of time on discord calls. My room has a fairly noticeable amount of background noise.
I also fly about 5 times per year, 2 ways.
So I was looking for a pair of headphones that would satisfy both of these use cases.
Until now, I had a wired setup for my desk (dedicated amp/dac with a variety of wired headphones) with an ant lion modmic wired. This resulted in a bundle of wires following me around at my desk, and many of my headphones were open back, so the background noise would be an issue. And for my flights, I’d use a pair of air pods pro. However, they’d run out of battery part way through a flight, which would be pretty annoying.
I believe that this headset is the only option in the market that satisfies the following criteria:
1. Low latency wireless audio for gaming
2. Noise cancelling
3. Audio quality actually sounds decent (no the steelseries doesn’t count)
4. Connects to my phone via bluetooth
5. Doesn’t look like a gaming headset so I can actually wear it in public
6. Has a decent mic that doesn’t revert to bluetooth phone quality when connected to a PC
There are headphones/headsets that do any one of these things better than the BeoPlay Portals. But as mentioned before, I still think these are the only option that do all of the above.
However, I think there are caveats to consider before buying these (numbered same as above):
1. The wireless connection does not go very far. I’d say after 7-10 feet, and out of line of sight these start stuttering. I’m not sure if this is typical of 2.4ghz dongle-based connections. With line of sight it’s much better. EDIT: It seems to be a lot better now, I can go around 30 feet line of sight without noticing any differences in quality.
2. Noise cancelling is fine, but dedicated NC headphones are much better. When enabling NC, it pops in instead of fading in like with other options. Voices and other non-constant sounds filter in much more than others.
3. No, they don’t sound better than the air pods max (though I do think they sound better than the Sony WH-1000XM series). After my ears acclimated to them I’d say the sound quality is really nice. They’re definitely the best sounding wireless gaming headset I have ever heard for music. If you’re into EQ, there’s an equalizer APO preset available online to match the harman target.
4. The bluetooth connection could use some updates. Especially when connected to both the dongle and my phone, there are some issues. Could be my phone having a problem as well. Usually disconnecting BT and reconnecting solves the issue. Also, the bluetooth doesn’t connect automatically, and I need to tap the button to get my phone to connect. I tried toggling the auto-connect setting in the app, but it didn’t seem to help.
5. These look great. No caveats in the looks department. I’d say there’s more pressure on the top of my head than I like, so if you’re sensitive to that, it could be worth trying other options. I’ll also say that at first these used to slip off my head, but since breaking in/accumulating my oils (ew) it seems to grip much better. The ear cups are replaceable, and they twist off. But they have this plastic fixture so I assume you can only replace them with genuine B&O pads.
6. Though it doesn’t revert to BT call quality when used as a headset when connecting to a PC, the mic quality is pretty meh. Since I’m really picky about how others hear my voice, I got a modmic wireless which solves this issue, and I can still be without any wires when at my desk.
Other observations outside of my requirements:
Battery life seems to be as advertised, but it’s really tough to time it for 22 hours. I’ll just say that I haven’t had any issues or surprises. The Type C charging is convenient.
I don’t use the tap controls much, but the volume slider on the back of the right cup is really nice. The noise cancelling/transparency mode slider doesn’t need to exist IMO, it could just be a toggle or a button. But perhaps someone else will find it useful.
The app does what it says, but it’s a bit flakey. Usually by waiting a bit, it figures itself out. I don’t use it much.
I definitely complained a lot, but overall I’m very happy with these. I’ll test the noise cancelling on a plane and maybe remember to report back.
At the full price I’d hesitate to recommend these, but check price comparison web sites to get the best deal. I got mine for $300 for which is definitely worth it. Given all these caveats, for most people I’d recommend a gaming headset from a reputable brand (sennheiser/epos?), plus a pair of noise cancelling headphones from Bose/Sony/whatever. That would probably still be cheaper than buying these at full price, and you could get the best of both worlds. But these are perfect for me.
I considered the price is very important. Even it’s B&O, a $499 gaming headphone is not accetable. So I waited till black Friday and bought it with $299 within 5 days shipped to Taiwan.
So I would compared with the experience from B&O HX.
The material from HX is Aluminum and leather, beoplay portal seems using plastic and nylon. I can sense HX is much better, but for gaming I don’t need much like that, so I think both do ok. I then use HX in my office.
When playing PC games and watch youtube videos, I do think the volume control is crucial. HX you need to use your finger and touch the Al earpad with a circle manner, which is really hard for me and you should definitely try it in store, the learning process is painful and you should not try it; Portal doing great cuz it only need your finger slide up or down at the edge of right earpad—This is very intuitively…
Controlling the ANC: HX use one button for ANC/no ANC; Portal use left edge slide up/down for either
No ANC/ANC. Besides you can change the percentage how much ANC you want, it’s not all or nothing—I think that is very good job also.
For synnergy with PC. HX seems had not much function well with PC, it’s bluetooth linked my desktop but there’s alway buzzy noise happend, I also bought the bluetooth adaptor to improve it, but it didn’t. But it doing well with my dell laptop at office, if you using gaming laptop you may consider HX, but checked portal out: I’m very surprised that B&O provided the typeC-USB-adaptor in inner box, I’m very happy because in previous experience HX buzzy noise is not improved by adaptor and I try to buy a XBOX WIN10 adaptor this time, it seems no need this time! And no need to pay for adaptor is great.
It can unlock the dolby sound effect in MS store, the synnergy is well and I don’t even key in any serial key or something.I then went into some problem that my microphone is mute and no way to turn it up, I eventually found it could be unmute in B&O iphone app.
Both HX and portal loos great. HX ox red looks like an artwork; Portal doesn’t look like artwork, and it’s low key as a gaming headphone— it does not have those shimmering LED lights but it looks with a special style (is it scandinavia design looking?), anyway I prefer this kind of design. Both two are good for me.
Something also surprised me is Portal also provide a bag that can carry the portal earphone, even the material is not that special, but it has a B&O logo on it. That looks nice.
I think not many guys have also HX and Portal , so I compared them together and you can choose by your own. If both price are around 500USD, i will definitely choose portal.
The only reason I need headphones is because my significant other can’t stand listening to the game as loud as I like to play it. I have a very nice dolby atmos sound system that makes me feel like I’m in a war when I’m playing FPS games. However this is the very next best thing if I had to choose a headset. Hands on first time you can tell that these are premium. I got lucky and scored them during holiday sales and got them for 299 but I was willing to spend the 499 if need be. Usually I don’t like having to download an app on my phone but in this case the B&O app was very useful at tweaking the settings needed for these headphones. They paired almost instantly with my iphone. I use them mostly for gaming on the PS5 and day 1 I think they were a great purchase, they take advantage of dolby atmos for headphones, the playstations 3D audio. Its really easy to set up, just plug the usb c into the usb a dongle that is included and plug that into the back of the playstation. If the headset is connected to the dongle then you should be good to go. I went to the sound settings of the ps5 and the ps5 already recognized the headset. If you don’t hear sound just restart your playstation and you should be good to go. You may need to tweak the sound setting for “all audio” to go to headphones on the playstation, just an FYI.
I had a pair of Sennheiser 363 gaming headphones that I loved and were super comfy but my daughter broke them, so I brought these as a replacement and they are fantastic. I have a couple of B&O products ranging from the woeful EQ’s that can’t connect to Bluetooth for more than 5 minutes all the way up to an A9 but why I mention this is I also have a pair of H9 Version 3’s and these are a much better all-round headset for every day much, even though I was in love with my H9’s before these arrived.
The headphones are feature rich, mic is clear and the bluetooth connection is very robust on PC and PS5. I know the Xbox has had a few issues but for PC, Steam deck, Switch and PS5 these headphones are fantastic.
I haven’t tried these on the plane so can’t comment if they are better or worse than the H9’s for noise cancelling and secondly, I think the grey might get a bit dirty over time. That said, these are my new favourite headphones!
I bought these as a step up in gaming headset. Unfortunately though the sound quality is by far the best I have heard the Mic was shockingly bad, and sometimes did not work at all.
This will need some development before I consider them again.
Marked 4 stars as they’re top tier sound, luxurious packaging and experience unboxing but it just fell very short on Mic.
Sound is incredible for gaming and music. They are so comfortable and the build quality is exactly what you would expect from a high end headset.Battery life for me personally is no issue i had 4 sessions of maybe 4 hours each of gaming and still have around 26 % left. Again sound is very well defined in these nothing overlapping i play COD and the directional sound is just incredible.Mic is so good and clear no unwanted hissing or static noises.I have the Astro A 50 and some Steelseries but the Beoplay’s are on a whole another level
The biggest compliment I can give this headset is that it legitimately gives me no problems using it. Function-wise, it checks almost every box I need it to and does so in a seamless, painless manner. Quick connection to devices, dedicated connection buttons for Bluetooth and the Dongle, works on all my consoles* and PC and Switch in handheld mode, 3.5 mm connection, it does it all and it does it in a relatively comfy, luxury package. I don’t have any of the software or connection issues with other famous headsets like the Audeze Penrose X or MG20. The fact I can quickly just grab my phone after a gaming session and go straight to school across town without taking them off is seriously impressive. Going with a USB C dongle also expands its connectivity exponentially, letting me use it with my Steam Deck and iPad Pro no problem.
That being said, there are a dozen and a half small issues I could leverage at it. While I can technically use it with all my consoles, an Xbox connection requires using the 3.5 mm cable through the controller that doesn’t allow for audio mixing with Bluetooth or the dongle. While I do leverage most of this criticism at the proprietary security Xbox has implemented when it comes to accessories, the fact is the Xbox Beoplay Portal has the wireless connection, and for the price point this should just be included and replace the old model. Also, like the header says, this is good for everything, but it isn’t perfect for anything. You’re not getting the sound quality of the Audeze Penrose X, you’re not getting the mic of the Corsair Virtuoso, you’re not getting the level of noise cancelling of the Sony Inzone H9’s/XM5’s, you’re not getting the full gaming software or ecosystem of Razer or Steelseries or Asus, etc. This is billing itself as a functional all-in-one, and it’s up to you to decide if you’re comfortable with the trade-offs of this current set. I also wish that the app let me remap more of the touch/tap controls, because I think it absolutely could give me a full suite of media controls with its current setup.
Ultimately, I recommend this to someone who’s looking for a luxury headset that can do it all at a very good level. It’s not going to excel at any of those things, but this is the closest I’ve come to an all-in-one I can happily recommend.
Everything about these headphones just exudes exceptional quality
– Sound
– Build
– Design
It comes with a price tag to reflect this
My only gripe is it doesn’t come with a hard travel case
My husband is absolutely thrilled with these. He has been using a 50 set from Argos for the past few years and I could always hear him saying”can you hear me?” Well not anymore. He’s over the moon with these and says they’re such a beautiful crisp, clear sound. When they’re on he feels immersed in the game and can hear and be heard crystal clear. They are comfy and he’s able to wear them for a long period of time with no discomfort or headaches. Not only is the sound quality amazing but the build quality and style are also top notch. Would highly recommend these!
Very very good headphones this is! You can use this headphones to play games but you can also use it to connect to you mobile phone and answer calls or listen to music.. the sound is crisp and the battery life is long. The product all round is very well made and bang olufsen obviously is world renowned in making good quality speakers etc.
A tad chunkier than my current headphones, these are still very lovely to look at, aesthetically pleasing. Black leather earcups, good padding and with L and R clearly labelled (inside each earcup). 90 swivelling earcups too.
The underside of the headphones also have good memory foam padding but with a fabric cover, not leather which seems so be the standard with every other headphones. The headphones are very comfortable even after prolonged periods of wear. They need to be too as when gaming, you could be wearing them for hours on end. Time seems to go very quickly when gaming, unless struggling !!
Thankfully, whilst the padding is thick and plentiful, with good depth and dimensions, the headphones are easy to wear and they’re not particularly heavy, coming in at around 280g.
Inside the earcups are large aperture 40mm drivers. These sit over the ears well and even after hours of constant use, they remain a comfortable wear as mentioned earlier.
Connecting, like with most Bluetooth headphones, is straight forward (connection is ‘Beoplay Portal PC/PS’). Volume ‘button’ on the right earcup along with the power button, aux port and USB C port. The volume button isn’t actually a button at all. You actually slide you finger or thumb across it to raise or lower the volume !! The left earcup has the Bluetooth button and another swipe ‘button’ for switching through ANC to voice transparency.
In addition to the above, on the outside of each earcups are two aluminium discs, B&O branded that have touch functionality. By pressing on the side of each earcup you can access further controls. To play/pause, double press the left disc. To go back to the beginning of a song double press the outside of the right disc.
Then above is true when listening to music. When gaming, the left disc doubles as the equaliser whilst double pressing the right disc mutes gaming sound, if for instance, you receive a call.
No option to skip songs though, or at least none that I’m aware of.
When paired, headphone battery lasts up to a huge 42 hours of Bluetooth play time with ANC and up to 19 hours of wireless gaming, much longer than I can continuously play for !!
Also and worth mentioning that along with the headphones, you also receive a USB A to USB C audio/charging cable, a 3.5mm aux audio cable, USB C dongle, USB C to USB A adaptor, soft fabric, fine felt weighted drawstring headphones bag with aluminium drawstring stopper, aluminium and B&O branded. Additionally, instructions manuals and a quick start guide also included.
Also included are instructions on how to download the official license for Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology that at its simplest helps enhance the audio experience, making it more immersive as well as reduce the latency.
Using these headphones is a joy. Musically, they offer a well balanced sound – Bass, treble, mids and vocals are clear and distinct.
Trebles and mids and vocals are a joy to hear, wonderful and balanced. Here, you’re offered a very immersive, satisfying, pleasant and enjoyable music listening experience. I really like the sound here and I cannot praise it highly enough. Detail is crisp, lovely to hear and vocals are clear and concise. Listening to songs like Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack and Hunger by Florence and the Machine will have you savouring each layer, appreciating the complexity and having the effect of immersing you in the song, enjoying it, enjoying the journey that includes highs and lows. Additionally, you do indeed feel as though you’re hearing sounds you’ve not heard or not picked up on before, especially if you compare these headphones to cheaper headsets.
For Bass, there are plenty of songs to listen to, but for me, the bass heavy nature of reggae or Darkside, Paper Trails along with the deep vocals will always help distinguish between the notsogood headphones, good headphones from the great headphones.
Buttons on the earphone all works as expected and work well with my iPhone.
Connection to both a PS5 and PS4 is instant when used with the dongle plugged in. OLED Switch via Bluetooth connects to this headphones too.
The app functionality is good. Amongst other things, you can select from music or movie sound modes, or different gaming sound modes whether you’re role playing or otherwise.
The own voice functionality means you’re able to hear yourself talk whilst continuing to play games. A neat feature.
Active noise cancelling (ANC) feature does indeed reduce a significant amount of outside noise. It’s probably not as good as other premium headphones but it is effective, effortlessly blocking out a good proportion of the everyday noise.
Back to gaming. These really do excel whilst gaming. The location of gunshots and explosion easily identifiable, even footsteps. I’ve even hear FIFA 22 crowd chants that I’ve not heard before, or at least I’m certain that I have not !!
Latency is too notch too. By top notch I mean zero latency !!
No gaming microphone arm, but that’s not needed. The headset has a number of microphones that pick up and amplify your voice clearly whilst also restricting some of the background noises. Beneficial during telephone calls too. The voice on the other end can be heard clearly and I was advised that I could be heard clearly too !!
Finally, it is worth commenting that these headphones do leak sound and therefore will be heard by anyone sitting within close proximity. So, if you like your sounds loud, beware that they will be heard by all in close proximity !!
There is lots more to like than not like with these B&O headphones and overall, you’re unlikely to be too disappointed, especially if you turn a blind eye at the price of the headphones, a price that is eye-wateringly high. Turn a bling eye I will though because I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a better headphone set that serves excellently well in both gaming mode and everyday general use. It comes with a premium price tag but it’s dual functionality makes it a worthy consideration.
My only disappointment, whilst I am grateful that B&O have supplied a drawstring storage, realistically, I would have preferred a hard storage case, something that would protect my headphones when I’m travelling with them, and travelling with them I will be.

High end product from Bang and Olufsen, one of the best-known around the globe. B&O it’s always been one of the top brands for audio product, they’ve earned their reputation for the incredible focus on sound quality and exceptional product design. Mo my expectation for this headphone was very high. For this price range I expect a high-quality sound, durability and conform while wearing. After using it for a month now I can confirm: Bang & Olufsen Portal meets all my expectation and criteria.
Arrived in a small white box, very stylish and minimalistic, typically Danish design. It was sealed around so I was 100% sure this is a brand-new headphone and never ben used before. The headphones came with a USB charging cable (Type A to Type C), and a jack-to-jack cable. Unfortunately, no hard case comes with it which was a bit of a disappointment for almost half a thousand pounds I would expect to get one so I can keep the headphones in when not in use. A Quick start guide is included as well, tells you everything about the features packed into this headphone and how to connect it with a device using the 5.1 Bluetooth. Taking out from the box, it was almost fully charged so I was able to use it straight away for about 20-25 hours. I must say the battery life is very impressive, I think you can easily get around 19 hours of wireless gaming, and up to 42 hours of Bluetooth play time with ANC turned on.
The built quality of the headphones is superb, not just looks but also feels and sound premium. Somehow the design is unique the rounded edge for each element of this headphones it gives an unusual but pleasant look. The headband is adjustable and padded inside (not just on the top part), the ear-cups are big enough to cover most of my ears. Stays well on my head and I don’t feel uncomfortable even if I use this for hours continuously. But what I’s really matter on top of the built quality is that sound quality of this earphones which is unbelievably good. The Portal model been created for gamers, it can be connected with your console or with the PC. It doesn’t have that typical gamer design so it can be used as an everyday headphone connected with a phone as well.
To get put the most of this earphone I needed to download the B&O app from the App store available for both Apple and Android phone. The app is very intuitive and has an easy-to-use user interface. Enables for you a few very useful features such like easy connections with smartphones and tablets, customising settings, Pre-set Audio profile, Customise Ambient sound control or you can even access the Online manual trough this app. I’ve paired it with my iPhone 13Pro Max which was so simple and quick process. Featured with built in mic so it can be used to answer phone calls or use it for zoom, teams and other video calls or to speak with others while you play on PlayStation.
In terms of the price is in the high-price range however for this 449 (price at the time of this review was written) you’ll get a well know brand’s promise that you will not have any problems with it for years and years. Highly recommend this
I ordered the PC/PS version which might be important as I suspect it is a more refined product, having been released a year or so later. Thought I’d write a review because all seemed focused on xbox and some of the common complaints don’t apply.
I was looking for headphones to us in PC VR gaming and had several requirements: (1) Low latency 2.4 ghz wireless PC connection; (2) Noise cancellation including good transparency effect; (3) Good sound quality; and (4) a decent mic. These fit all my requirements where no other headset out there did. These are not perfect, but they are perfect for my use case – so 5 stars relative to what I wanted.
Pros:
– Very well made. Feel very high quality/premium.
– My wife thinks they look good. I like the silver/grey color.
– I have owned plenty of headphones but don’t claim audiophile expertise. My reference point for sound quality is the Bose 700 headset I have been using (wired to my quest 2 headset). Different sound signatures, but these are at least as good and better as it pertains specifically to gaming.
– ANC is good enough to be worthwhile and useful. Not as effective as my Bose 700 or my Bose QC Earbuds, but different use case really. Where I take my Bose with me outside, these I use only inside. ANC is more than sufficient to block out the annoying fans on our AC/heating units while at home. Not sure it would work on the subway or NYC streets.
– Transparency mode is good. This is important to me as I like to be able to keep on and hold a conversation. Feels natural and close enough to my Bose, which are very good. This is the first time a non-bose ANC transparency mode has worked well for me…….have jabra headphones and Samsung buds where transparency feels very artificial.
– Wireless connection to PC dongle has been rock solid. No issues as all on this version where some other reviews noted issues for the Xbox version.
– The setup is pretty easy. You do need to use the phone app, but it worked well for me. Computer could be viewed as plug and play, but worth installing the Dolby access software. If you want to make changes to sound profile on PC without your phone, you need the Dolby software.
– The mic works pretty well even without a boom arm. It’s certainly good enough for gaming purposes, and generally better than I expected. I would at least say that the quality is good enough that I would have no interest in a headset with a boom arm even if there were some mic quality benefits.
– Mic background noise suppression surprisingly good. I have been using RTX voice to accomplish this anyway, but that is now arguably superfluous.
– Handles dual wireless connections really well.
– Comfortable to wear.
Cons:
– If you are looking for the best ANC out there, turn to Bose or Sony. The ANC feature is helpful on these and I am definitely glad to have it, but it’s definitely not the best out there. I think they have leaned toward subtlety, which is the right move – limited effectiveness but it is never irritating or in the way. My Samsung Galaxy buds ANC can be really distracting, you notice it both when with ANC on and when using transparency mode.
– The controls are pretty good but not necessarily intuitive out of the gate. For instance some buttons change depending on what wireless connections you have. Ultimately this benefits utility, but can be confusing upfront.
– Transparency mode works differently with mic on vs mic off. It sorta intermixes ANC with sidetone functionality which is confusing. Not a big deal, but I would prefer these be separate functions.
– I wish headphone makers would focus on making them less wide. I don’t operate in the apple ecosystem, but airpods max look great with lower profile. These are pretty wide which hurts the aesthetics in my view (maybe cause my head more oval than round), though not much worse than Bose 700 in this regard. Of course I am also using them at home when wearing a VR headset……I already look ridiculous so no consequence to me for how I use. Also as noted above, my wife actually likes the way these look, so taste may vary.
– Some of the on headset controls would benefit from voice notification rather than beeps. Sometimes hard to tell if I landed on the right setting. Bose 700 has this and it really helps.
I ordered these gaming headphones to enhance my gaming experience.
Arrived very well protected in a beautiful high quality branded and sealed box.
Pure premium feel to these over-ear headphones, very stylish and modern with designer B&O logo on outer side of ear piece. Best quality materials making up the extremely well made and robust headphones.
For such a luxury product filled with all the latest tech they are very light at just 279g, they glide effortlessly on your head and fit seamless over your ears. If you wanted you could wear these all day and night, even go to bed with them on they are so comfortable.
The sound quality is nothing less than perfect, Dolby Atmos creates a spacious sound where you can tell if a pin drops in the game. These headphones been specially designed and engineered for intense gaming and the results are out of this world.
Over-Ear pieces have quick and easy one touch short-cuts with simple access controls to mute or adjust volume. Perfect connectivity with very long battery life that doesn’t drain when not used.
Overall, you get what you pay for. These are by a country mile the best gaming wireless over-ear headphones on the market. Crystal clear sound for both way audio, no distortion or loss of any sound even when at full volume.
I would recommend this product.
Unbelievably rich sound, ultra premium comfortable design and a pretty good battery life. Feature rich making them a seamless transition between work life, on-the-go use and whilst gaming.
In gaming mode the Portal shows what it’s truly made of – from the lost souls of the greatest past headphone – which were left in limbo as there work here, wasn’t quite done. Reincarnated here, within a set to be reckoned with.
With Dolby Atmos, distant noises, such as chatter, footsteps, weaponry and explosions not in the foreground can be located with accuracy in the virtual surround field, when I compare it to a standard set of stereo headphones, giving gamers an enviable advantage over their opponents.
Just as the ghosts of the top performing past headsets, these have been built with solid, highly functional yet elegant materials, like soft lambskin on the ear cups – no sheepskin here. Milled aluminium frame and knitted bamboo fabric on the headband – not imitation leather. Yet this set weighs not far off 300g – supremely light enough to be worn with comfort and blissful ignorance for hours – in fact, at one point, I misplaced them, only to discover they were around my neck.
An all round excellent headset, especially with this 2nd gen relaunch of Beoplay Portal – now with PS5 support along with the new USB-C dongle which provides quick connectivity for PC and smartphone players, as well as Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX Adaptive technology for smartphone use.
Wireless gaming has improved too with the 2nd Gen, up from 12 hours to around 19 hours whilst using ANC. Overall battery life has seen much improvement too – you’ll get around 42 hours with Bluetooth active in Active Noise Cancellation mode.
A rare set, which makes transitioning from work to play a breeze…and also hugely enjoyable.
5 stars
These provide you a professional gaming experience, the quality is FANTASTIC sounds are much richer than any other headphones I had the chance to try. Feel-wise, this headset is lightweight and comfortable to wear for long periods of time. A bit on the pricey side but all in all a great purchase and definitely worth the buy.
I have been using these headphones for the last couple of weeks on a daily basis and overall I would recommend them.
The build quality is fantastic, the sound profile is great and they handle every task I throw at them really well.
If you are considering buying those I would point out that the noise cancelling function is good but other devices are more balanced. Equally, if iOS is your modus operandi then you might find the Apple integration a little clunky.
These headphones are priced towards the upper end of the consumer headphone market and I think the sound and build is in line with the price. A couple of minor points to detract from the overall experience and meant I couldn’t give 5 stars but if I could’ve given 4.5 starts I would have!
For further detail please see below.
Build:
As mentioned, the build quality on these headphones is fantastic. The materials used are great, with the headphones having a really nice overall finish making them a pleasure to use. All the combines to leave you with a really sturdy pair of headphones that are deceptively light. After a couple of hours use my ears were warm but not uncomfortably so.
I found the touch controls to be a little unresponsive at times but I believe this is being addressed in a future firmware update that will align the sensitivity to other B&O products.
Battery life is fantastic, they charge very quickly and my experience was in line with the manufacturers claim of 35 hours battery life. I started on a Monday morning with a full charge and used these every day for 5/6 hours a day; joining conference calls and listening to music while working. They finally gave up and needed charging on Friday evening which I was very pleased with.
Audio experience:
As you’d expect from a B&O product, the sound quality is terrific. They are really well balanced giving an overall warm profile yet retaining a crisp sound you’d expect from higher end headphones.
