These replace my old Meindl boots that I wore out after 1000 mile of hiking in and the reason I chose Berghaus over another pair of Meindl is purely down to the fact that the Meindl never felt truly comfortable, always felt hotspots and developed blisters (had to tape my feet for 15 mile +) and I always recall my first ever hiking boots, Berghaus, were comfortable all the way up to their passing!
So the VC22 I have found to be comfortable straight out of the box. I have covered around 70 miles in mine so far, the longest hike has been 12 miles so not massive distance, however they have felt comfortable at the end of the hike. I have the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in 3 weeks so they will get a proper testing then for distance. The type of terrain and conditions have all been winter conditions. They have dealt with thick deep mud, torrential rain, Ice, snow, hill tracks and woodland trails.
They have been comfy with ice spikes and so far have kept the water out and not leaked despite being blasted by the hosepipe at the end of each walk!
They dry quickly too as all synthetic however I would probably treat them with a DWR spray every few months to keep the water rolling off them.
The sole is grippy, with an effective tread pattern however quite slippy on the Lakes green stone when wet (although I think most boots are on that stuff). I have yet to try them on some of the ‘sharp’ mountain paths so I don’t know how the sole protects from feeling the stones, on hillside stony paths they have been comfortable.
I have worn mine with a bridgedale liner super thin sock and sealskinz extreme cold weather socks (knee high) due to conditions and the season and despite it being a thick sock there has been plenty of room in the toebox. I have a size 5 – 5.5 medium foot and I bought size 6 and they’re perfect even with the socks.
The only design flaw and issue I have had so far is the inner ankle socks that stop debris from getting into the boot while walking. In principle a great idea however it’s a battle to get the boots on! I’ve sort of mastered it now but the first time I almost gave up. Glad I persevered as once your foot is inside it’s spacious and comfortable! Despite wearing waterproof socks which are an added layer of wind and water protection, the boots goretex protects the foot completely (so far). I would have thought though that if you were to take a soaking the fabric ankle protector would wet through and soak into standard hiking socks and ‘wick’ down inside the goretex layer to make all of the foot wet.
The laces are fab, they don’t loosen at all or come undone (on my shorter 3-5 hour hikes…the Y3P should be a good test for a longer hike)
I recommend these boots. If you can get past the battle getting into them you will find a comfortable, lightweight weatherproof boot that provides grip and stability.
Unfortunately these were too small for my other half to wear but she gave them to her friend who loves them. Not sure if it’s the brand but they come a little on the small side so I would order a size or two bigger than you usually do, I usually do this with my Nike trainers, thankfully most of the options offer free returns for peace of mind which is good. The boots are really well made and the premium materials feel great. My other half and her friend often go walking together and she’s been loving them, they’re comfortable and her feet stay nice and dry while providing plenty of grip.
I love these slippers, I really like their design and the fact that you practically put your foot in the sock and you can use them in the winter without getting snow in them. I chose size 6 so that they wouldn’t be too tight because I wear somewhere around 5.5, only that the first time I put my foot in them a little hard because of the sock, but in the end it fits well without hitting or bothering me. I climbed the mountain with them and walked through the forest and my feet weren’t cold at all and I didn’t even get wet. I think it’s worth the money, even if it costs 131.33, it’s totally worth it.
I take a size 6 but ordered these boots in a 7, to leave room for warmer socks. I’m very glad I did as they are still quite tight to get on. I have to undo a lot of the laces to get my feet inside. Once on, these boots are very warm and comfortable. They don’t feel heavy on my feet, even after a long ramble in the rain, and they kept me dry. I didn’t suffer any blisters or sore skin from these, which is great. The boots are very well made from a premium brand, and they look sturdy enough to last a long time.
Really nice hiking boots. I did order a size 5…because i wear a size 4 usually but i just wanted to make sure i could wear them with a thick pair of socks…that won’t be happening anytime soon…So…them being a size 5…me wearing a size 4…i can barely fit them….i’ve struggled for 5 minutes just to put one boot on…they have some type of elastic band at the entrance if i can say it like that…so it’s not the usual type of shoe…you have to slide you foot in sort to speak…and my feet don’t work that way….when i finally managed to put them both on…i could feel the blood not moving in my feet… …and when i did spent another 10 minutes with my boyfriend puling on my legs and took the socks off my feet where white…and i could see with my bare eyes how the blood came rushing back into my feet.
I will say this….they are of excellent quality…maybe my feet were a bit swollen at the time…but i didn’t try them back on again that’s for sure…coz i was sweating like i’ve been running for half an hour at the gym the first time…Maybe i should give them another try after i loose a bit of weight…i have nooo idea…but i am not giving them up yet….but still…from a size 4 to a size 5 and them not fitting…maybe i dream a little to much. Anyways….if you do manage to find the right size for you….i am 100% recommending them to anyone…because they are very very qualitative….good looing boots…amazing material….Worth every single penny.
I found these boots light to wear. They have a high ankle so offer good support, the sole is non slip and the boots are waterproof. I have walked through a stream and over boulders while on holiday. They were really light and comfortable. I have a dodgy ankle so sometimes struggle putting boots on and taking them off so I ordered a size up. I am glad I did , it made it easier to to take them off and put them on again.I like the colour and the style and they should last me through a few Winters and long hikes.
I found these boots too small to put on I couldn’t get my feet into the sock part I’m going to try to stretch the sock so I can get them on but they seem to be nice sturdy and very well-made can’t really say much more I just hope I don’t ruin the grip of the socks whilst trying to stretch them slightly I gave them four stars because they are good quality boots
I love these boots. It is rare to be able to put on a pair of walking boots and have them feel instantly comfortable like an old well worn pair but these honestly are one of the best pair of boots I’ve ever had. They have an inner sock/cuff around the opening of the boot which gives a secure fit but it isn’t hard against the back of the ankle where you can often get chaffing, instead it offers a soft padding. The downside of this though is that they really are quite difficult to put on as the sock at the ankle is really well fitted and you can’t just push your foot in, you really have to put your fingers in the loops on the back and front and wiggle and push your foot in. Now having worn them a few time this has got easier but you really won’t be able to get them on in a rush. These boot are nice and water tight, and again because of this inner sock it stops water being able to get in through the tongue/laces. I wasn’t sure on sizing so went up a half size and I am happy with the fitting.
These are one of the most comfortable walking boots that I had for a while, once you adjusted the laces to the right size and tension, the boots will hug the foot properly which eliminates rubbing, but does so without feeling too tight or awkward.
The patterns on the sole provide excellent grip to the surface, it has been dry lately but a couple of walks on wet rocky beaches were a great test and it did grip as expected, it also put the waterproof part to the test, I would say more water repellent and should be OK for heavy rain days, but not for submerged areas.
Size fits as expected, but the sock design around the ankle makes slipping them on a little bit difficult, it’s not a bad thing but it is something to consider, these are great for long walks where you won’t be needing to change shoes in and out of a car for example, as trying to balance yourself outside your car to slip them on will be a bit tricky, specially for anyone who struggles with balance.
I am very happy with these boots and they’re going to be my main Winter walking boots, would definitely recommend.
Berghaus is a name synonymous with the outdoors so I was expecting great things from these boots.
They are light and have Vibram soles so grip is good. The sole is welded to the top part which helps with waterproofing and having tested them they are indeed waterproof. I just hope they stay that way.
They have an inner ‘sock’ around the top of the boot that fits snugly around your ankle when the boots are on your feet but getting them on is hard work. The opening is quite small because of these inner socks and you have to pull and tug at them to get your foot inside. Once inside, though, they are comfortable to wear.
I feel the laces are a bit thin for walking boots, I am used to more chunky laces, and I do wonder how long these laces will last.
These are a good pair of boots, being light and comfortable, I just wish they were a bit easier to put on.
A sturdy and comfortable walking boot. Waterproof fabric keeps your feet dry and the soles grip really well, so great for walking on stony ground in the wet.
The knitted collar feels really nice on your ankles and is less likely to rub than solid fabric or leather.
They are a bit of a pain to get on though, you need to faff around to get your foot into the inner lining, I’m not sure why they are designed like that, it’s time consuming and quite frankly annoying.
They are very expensive but good quality with good water resistance.
Hope you found my review helpful
This is a bit difficult to review as there are good points and bad points. Firstly it is a really well made boot and the elasticated ankle seal is really good and they should be particularly waterproof. They have a nice design a good sole and a Gore-Tex upper. As far as wanted a well made boot these are great.
The problem is the shape and fit. My wife has wider feet and these are quite narrow. She could only wear them for a short time before they became uncomfortable. I would suggest that if you do have narrow feet that you order a size larger than usual at least. But then you might find that they slip back and forth and cannot be used for long walks.
The Berghaus Vc22 Multisport GTX boots are comfortable and light, after visual inspection of the boots I was very happy with the quality, they are made to a high standard and I love the Wine Black colour option.
The boots feel comfortable on and have a stitched in knit collar that hugs the ankle for extra comfort, they can get a little difficult getting your foot in with thick socks on but there are finger pulls to the front and back to assist with this.
The laces are thin and flat and hold tightly enough when tightened but I think they could have been a little thicker as they do feel a little flimsy.
When walking they feel sturdy and light, the soles offer fantastic grip with the OPTI-STUD pattern and VIBRAM rubber combination, the Orthlolite footbed provides additional cushioning whilst the durable ripstop upper provides protection.
PFC-free Durable Water Repellent treatment and waterproof-breathable GORE-TEX protects you from the elements.
My wife wears a size 7 in everything and these fit perfectly, the soles are solid and the upper fabric takes a little bedding in at the toe section when walking before they feel totally comfortable.
Overall, these are a quality mid hiking boot that will tackle almost any trail and feel confident in doing so, Thank you.
These walking boots are super quality, and you would expect that for the price, but I do feel you are paying a bit of a premium for the name.
When I opened the box, I was really impressed with the nice colour scheme, I choose the black and wine red which really go nicely together and give the boot a rugged look but doesn’t look manly.
The sole on the bottom however was very impressive, rugged, and manly. I love how each tread is about 5mm deep and all at good angles to ensure a super grip when you are walking and makes them really feel solid and that you could walk anywhere. Plus, they slightly curve upwards at the front and back to aid with a good walking stride.
The ankle part is all very solid and supportive, but you don’t feel like you can’t move and be flexible in it. I like the sock top part as this has been perfect for stopping any dust or dirt from going into the boot. The laces are strong and do not stretch when you pull hard on them to get a good tight fit of the boot and I really like the soft feel of the insole when I am walking across any ground right from tarmac to stones and gravel.
Overall, I was worried that at 160.00 currently they are very expensive and 3 times the cost of my usually walking boots but they are a different level of comfort and build quality, so I think you get more money’s worth from these, but I think they just need a bit of deal to make them better value.
