Easy to use and move from room to room and gives a good amount of light. It can’t replace being out in the sunshine but does make you feel brighter indoors.
Versatile SAD lamp bright enough for reading of Close working easily movable with the simplest of stands. Given as a gift this lamp is loved by the recipient and seems to help therapeutically.
After years of thinking maybe I suffer from SAD, this year was particularly difficult, so I finally decided to try a light box. Oh my goodness what a difference it’s made to my well being. I only use the light box for about 10 mins a day, but within a few days I was feeling so much better. Able to function normally and think more clearly.
For me this is the best money I’ve ever spent.
Just what I needed. After a week it lifted my mood and made me feel able to cope with the darker days. Using it for a few hours in the evening on relax mode helps me sleep better too.
I enjoy using the light in the morning and the timer is easy to set. I can rest it on my desk using the stand and I can benefit from it while using a computer. The separate power supply has a long lead. I chose this one because it is very bright, although it is bigger than other ones.
It’s very bright, can be moved easily and lights up a room.
All things I do/am not.
However this lamp is different. Within a couple of minutes of switching on, I feel awake and energised. I have been using this for months now with the same results. Its hard to believe the difference this has made. I don’t feel SAD and I am up at 6am and rearing to start the day It has changed my life for the better. Highly recommend.
It is a good lamp with lots of different light colouras to help you wake up and to help you sleep, also the alarm is a good option to have, though I didn’t use it. But the battery life is very short, has to be plugged inmost of the time
This mode I am happy to say has no such issues.
The interface is as simple as you could want, a touch button for on/off, and separate buttons for the three modes – therapy (brightest), active (daytime) and relax (evening). I find the modes work great in practise, The touch buttons themselves are nice and responsive so no frustrations there.
The unit is extremely lightweight yet robust and happily sits on my workdesk taking up little space. The light intensity produced is suitable for each mode and soft as opposed to harsh.
Highly recommend this lamp and good value for money.
I used it first thing every morning when I woke up this past winter, and I noticed a big difference in my energy levels and mood. It can take a few weeks to have full effects, but once it does you won’t want to go without it. They recommend having it within a certain distance of your face when using it for it to work properly, so just make sure to check the the instructions.
I did take off one star from “ease of use” because the stand that it comes with often falls off when I nudge or bump it by accident which can be quite annoying. Otherwise, it is a great product.
Bought this as a present. The recipient likes it and finds the light calming. I had an older version of this and it is huge. It sits on the floor. This newer version can sit on a table or bedside and so is more accessible.
I do a week of nights once every 2 months – this helps me get back to normal in the following week.
Also good for general SAD, and to reduce carb cravings.
I have been using it in the morning as it’s British winter so dark & cold. I have found the bright light helpful in waking me up once the alarm has gone off. The light is very bright & the way the cable is placed means you can hang it over a book or tablet.
Perfect for therapeutic purpose ie. those with SAD. Also love the multifunctional aspect of being able to use as a ambient lamp and one in-between. Saves on space. So, perfect for my requirements. Went for this brand, beurer, because of excellent reviews in relation to other brands in bothe function and quality.
I have been using the lamp as soon as I wake up, today is day three, I started with 30 minutes on the first day, did an hour yesterday and will do an hour again today and honestly, I’ve already felt a huge difference! My energy has returned, I had the most productive day in weeks yesterday and I’m back to jumping out of bed like I can’t wait for the day to start!
I feel much more ‘me’ and I’m absolutely amazed at how quickly this has happened, I wasn’t entirely convinced it would work before I tried it myself but now there’s absolutely no doubt.
It may not work for everyone but it has definitely worked for me and I would suggest giving it a try to anyone like me who is on the fence. There’s nothing to lose and perhaps everything to gain!
The green bit is a bit hard to wiggle out but it is great that you can place the lamp horizontally and vertically at different angles
I like the three settings although I mainly use the brightest one first thing in the morning. I bought this to replace an elderly Androv SAD light that I’d had for many years … very pleased with it.
TIP: turn your head away as you hit the ‘on’ button – it automatically comes on at the brightest setting and can be a bit overpowering if you happen to be looking straight at it.
I bought it for my husband as he always complains of the lack of natural light in UK. He was very skeptical about it but he keeps on using it so I guess he likes it. I’ll wait a few more months to see how he feels.
(I also accidentally dropped mine but it still works so very happy with the quality too)
I’m over the moon! Was worried the small size would mean it wouldn’t illuminate much but I’ve put it on this morning for the first time & my mind within 5-10 mins (I kid you not) feels so much brighter & positive. I’m sat about a metre away at the moment and I’m still feeling the benefits. I even think my cat is happier with it on. It’s super stylish, slim & light & comes in a nice grey pouch with a clip to position pad. Very similar to my iPad but even lighter. I was wavering between the two sizes but I’m really pleased with this, for a small light it’s super illuminating (my eyes only need to glimpse at it for that sunshine hit), my whole living room feels lighter & brighter & my mind definitely feels less affected by this gloomy weather we’re having at the moment. I really can see this light improving my depression & lack of motivation in the mornings, especially in the uk winter months! I’d highly recommend!
Good lamp but the cable and stand are not that great. Stand doesn’t work well, cable is hard as nails and pulls the light off the table, if you want a basic SAD light it’s ok, but get one with a better cable and stand. Apart from that good.
After a couple of months use I can honestly say this thing is brilliant (no pun intended!)
I’ve got used to the brightness of the light and & now have it in front of me on my desk all day until 4 or 5 pm. It helps keep me focused & alert, and my insomnia’s clearly improved. Despite some very difficult circumstances, I feel its also helping to keep depression at bay.
Original review:
This was a great purchase – I had a very expensive SAD lamp about 12 years ago that was 3 or 4 times the size of this and very bulky. That one got broken last time we moved, so because my mood’s been low recently and my sleep cycle’s really messed up, I decided it was time to invest in a new one.
I bought this particular model because it was the cheapest SAD lamp I could find from a reputable manufacturer. I was sceptical that such a tiny lamp could be any good, but I’m happy to have been proved wrong. Yes, it’s tiny size means you either need to have it very close to your face or use it for longer than my old lamp to get the full effect, but because it’s so dinky, it’s easy to whip out and switch on anywhere there’s a plug socket. The lead on the plug is over 5 ft long (about 155 cm) which has been plenty for my needs, but an extension lead could always be used if required.
Since my lamp arrived 3 days ago I’ve placed it on the table in front of me each morning whilst eating breakfast – it’s easily propped up using the little stand provided.
However the best thing for me was realising I can pop it in the tablet slot on my desk whilst I’m working (see photos). Initially this obscured my laptop screen, but the box the lamp came in was just the right size to raise my laptop to the right height!
The lamp does feel very bright so close to my face, and I believe working like this for too long would probably cause a headache, but it’s easy to switch the lamp on and off, so I’m using it in short bursts throughout the day, which (for me at least) seems the best way to use it.
Beurer’s official blurb states the light therapy takes about 7 days to take effect. I’ve not had it that long,so I can’t vouch for this lamp’s longer-term effects, but over two days of regular use, I feel it’s made me a little more positive and alert by day, and best of all, I fell asleep by 11:30 pm last night and stayed asleep until morning which is virtually unheard of! Having said that, I’ve also just switched from CBD to Valerian as a calmer/sleep aid, so how much of this can be attributed to the lamp I don’t know.
There seems to be plenty of scientific evidence online to back the manufacturers claims for this lamp. My gut feeling is that the lamp will have a substantial role to play in resolving seasonal low mood and sleep issues, but only as part of a wider strategy that includes eating healthily, physical exercise, practicing some kind of mindfulness, sleep hygeine, and supplementing with relevant vitamins & minerals (most Brits need D3 during winter months, plus many are deficient in B12, B6, magnesium, iodine & omega 3 fatty acids). As I was already working on other lifestyle factors, I’m hoping this lamp will be the final piece of the puzzle.
I’ll try and remember to add an update in a few week’s time to comment on any longer-term effects, but, so far, so good
Conclusion: this tiny & low-priced lamp seems well made, is just as effective as my previous much larger model, and is incredibly easy to use, store or carry around.
Oh my goodness, this lamp is my new best friend. We have a cup of tea in bed first thing in the morning and I’m set up for the day.
Although I’ve never been diagnosed with SAD, I’ve struggled with insomnia and very sluggish mornings. This lamp immediately changed all that. After using it the first morning, I felt tired at 8pm that evening genuinely sleepy-tired, a feeling I’d actually forgotten! If something wakes me I can drop off to sleep again and just a week later I’m getting 8 hours sleep every night – it used to be between 2-4 hours max. I’ve got much better concentration and interest in things – an appetite for breakfast (didn’t expect that one, having never been a morning eater)
It’s a great little lamp, as others have said – lightweight, size of a tablet, extremely portable. I’ve deducted one star for ‘easy to use’ as the stand isn’t too stable if it’s not on a rigid surface, but that’s easy to get around and doesn’t detract from the fact that it’s been a life changer for me. I’d definitely recommend and wish everyone the happiness it’s brought me. Priceless.
I’ve had the lamp for a month and would definitely recommend a SAD lamp to anyone, as it really seems to have improved my mood.
That said, I don’t think I would recommend this specific one, mainly because it doesn’t have a battery at all – has to be plugged in to work. It’s not very convenient having to sit near a socket and carry the plug around if you want to use it in different places. The plug is also very bulky so doesn’t fit behind furniture easily.
It also doesn’t let you adjust brightness and really is extremely bright. From what I understand current guidance suggests the light doesn’t have to be as bright – lower brightness would just mean you’d have to use the lamp for longer daily sessions.
Finally, I don’t believe they mention in the instructions it is much better to use the lamp right after waking as using later in the day it can affect your ability to sleep in the evening.
The lamp is very bright. But I guess that’s what it’s meant to be! I like how it comes with a felt wallet and attachment to prop it up. It has to be plugged in though. It would be great if it could be charged so you could take it anywhere. You need to be close to a plug which isn’t always easy.
Very good for the price, considering this is c. 30 and lumie equivalents are c. 80+. Its about the size of an iPad mini, so good if you’re looking for something easy to transport. On my desk set up, its not really possible to be as close to it as the instructions say you need to be (20 cm) but I still find it has a positive impact when I’m working during the dark mornings/evenings.
I have always wanted to try a SAD light, I have not been diagnosed with SAD but you don’t have to be to use these lights necessarily. I thought for working from home during this lockdown in the December/ January months this will be perfect to get more natural light into me when inside most of the day, as their is only so much that will come through the window when working in the corner of a room. Well worth the money and I do feel a massive difference having this on daily, especially first thing in the morning for a few hours. comes with a handy leaflet on how long you need to have it on etc Its also portable so can move it around easily. Also cheaper than john lewis on amazing.
Wanted something which would sit on the desk or table easily and this neat ‘tablet’ size design does it well. Simple to put together, lead perhaps a bit short. I think it is helping me in terms of seasonal affective disorder. Did find it necessary to acclimatize myself to such a bright light by starting at only 10-15 mins in front of it; as I felt a bit heady when first using it. Now I use it most dull days for about 30 mins with no issues. I might have preferred one with an adjustable brightness, but for the money, well satisfied.
It’s really bright and does make me feel much more awake during these grey winter months, but i do wish it had more light settings.. it only has one setting with reaally bright white light which can be quite glaring.
Love my little lamp! Well-made and very portable, though cable could be a bit longer. Looks like a large, light IPad, and has little grey slip case. Light is really bright. I use it every day and think it makes a big difference. I don’t look at it directly, though. I don’t like doing that; instead I prefer to have it near whilst I read or have my breakfast. I was not really expecting any benefits but feel them even after a short time and using this is now part of my daily routine.
This was a lifesaver over winter. I suffer from SAD so decided to purchase a light box of some kind. I was sceptical about whether it would work for me so I didn’t want to spend too much but still wanted something effective. I settled on this product as it was considerably cheaper than other options but still medically verified and seemed reputable. I am so glad I took the leap. The light is very bright indeed, especially on gloomy winter mornings. The little green removable ‘leg’ on the back helps you position it on a surface near your face. I like to sit next to it and read, so it helps me start the day in a healthy, calming way. It comes with a pouch to keep it safe in a bag so when I went away for Christmas I could easily take it with me. It’s similar dimensions to a tablet so fits super easily in a rucksack or bag designed for work etc. It’s mains powered so you do have to bring the cable with you and find somewhere to plug it in, but at least this means there aren’t any batteries to worry about changing! Plus the cable is long enough to reach a socket on the floor if you have it on the bed, for example. After using it for half an hour in the mornings I feel more energised, confident and able to face the day. It’s not quite the same as a bright, sunny, summer’s day, but it’s a lifeline for me as I find it near impossible to enjoy a day in winter without it.
The light itself is so bright and refreshing really helps me in the morning when feeling lethargic and down.
I use it to put on my make up do my nail varnish Aswell it has many uses.
Sometimes feels a little warm on back when been on for a bit but never gets hot hot and soon cools down when turned off.
One click on and off can have it long ways or tall upright with easy clip on support arm.
Even my dachshund jumps on my lap in the morning to use it (excuse the footage and our talking but gives you an idea how bright it is.)
Worth the money and as led wont have the bulbs dying on you.
Defiantly helped me feel brighte
I did have an issue where I had to return this item as after a while it started flickering. The return process was straightforward and I received a new product very quickly. The light is bright and I put it on each morning in the kitchen, I don’t sit facing it as never sit for that long but I think I feel the benefits of the brighter light on in the dark mornings!
My Research — There are many brands out there including probably one of the better known ones “Lumie”. While I did my research, I preferred the design and features of the Beurer over any of the others on offer. While the listing does promote the light as being portable, it still needs to be plugged in, so make sure that you have an outlet close by. The minimum you need for effectiveness against SAD is 10,000 lux, which this lamp supplies at a distance of 10cm. You can position it further away but you would need longer exposure for the same results.
In the box — You get the light itself, (which really does look a lot like an iPad), a plastic stand, a power supply and a carry case. There are instructions in there too, but as there’s only one button, you probably won’t need to read it at depth other than to check that you receive a good dosage of light throughout the day.
In use — The plastic stand can be used to position the SAD lamp in portrait or landscape orientations and is adequate for what it is designed to do. Just make sure the lamp is on a flat, stable surface and you will be fine.
My results —The lamp is placed about 70cm away at a 45 position from me while I work from my desk. This is of course greater than the effective distance specified, but as I spend about 5 hours per day in front of it. I have been using the lamp for 3 weeks now and have definitely felt a difference in my wellbeing and mood.
Other uses — I have found it to be pretty good for taking photos nearby. It’s no studio light, but it works for taking photos of objects placed close to the lamp.
Would I recommend this product — YES! For the money, it is a great investment in wellbeing especially if you spend more time indoors at this time of the year. Of course, Your mileage may vary, but I’m incredibly impressed with it!
I am so pleased it bought this. Excellent buy on Amazon. I just hold it to the side of my view 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock about 10cm away from in front of my face while I watch TV at home, it has made me feel so much better on these dark gloomy nights. It is to bright for me to look at at 6am so I choose to use it when I get in from work. I can’t position it 10 cm away at work. Worth the money so much cheaper than a weekend away : ) Good luck I hope it work for you too : )
This is a great lamp. It certainly helped me (I broke it!) in the winter months, giving me the energy in the mornings to start my day. It was either the lamp, or the good start to my day which the lamp gave me, that lifted my mood as well.
Interestingly, in springtime I moved it to use it on the plants in my reflexology studio, which does not have a window and it seemed to keep them alive.
I am going to buy another (before my plants die!) BUT it is not portable. That is misleading. It uses electricity not a battery and has to be plugged in, so that is very false advertising! It is maneuverable though, as it is very lightweight.
I find that often I have to plug into a socket wherein the cable needs to come out of the front of the device, which can get quite annoying as the stand is very weak and unbalanced to me. The device falls over all the time and the cable makes it harder to set it up initially. You can also only slot the stand into the back of the device in one angle (portrait). The on button is also very mushy.
I would say on balance though, taking into account how bright the device is, and how well priced it is, it does the job I need it to do for SAD.
The light
It’s emits at 10000 lux and on first turning it on it’s very bright and I did turn away. I soon got used to the light and you are occasionally meant to look into the light which isn’t blinding. The instructions say you should have it on daily for 2 hours to get the full benefits of it. This can easily be placed on a desk or held in front of you.
The led lasts for 20000 hours so I think that’s long enough. It also has a 3 year warranty. The unit comes with a white plug and about a 1 metre cable so long enough for my needs. To turn it on/off there’s a button on the top of the unit. The edges of the unit are a rubber material and feel quite nice.
Overall I’m impressed with it so far and after a few uses I do feel more energised.
The light is bright, but does require sitting pretty nearby to get any good effect. On/off operation, plug in and simple as can be. Comes with a cloth bag to prevent scratching in transport. It stays surprisingly cool even after several hours of being on. People complaining about the fact that it cannot run on batteries clearly have no concept of the power consumption/cost/size issues.
The item is made in China, not Germany as the Beurer GmbH branding would suggest. Not only made in China, but not even made by Beurer, they just use their name for branding. Label states this is made by “Taishan Anson Electrical Appliances Co Ltd” with an address in China. Disappointing.
Otherwise is a useful and simple light that could be of benefit to you during the winter months. I have yet to really evaluate the long term benefits myself, but so far am encouraged.
I bought it because I get quite lethargic when there is no sunshine…despite all other efforts. I can just recommend this for anyone who wants to feel better
This unit is cool – both literally and metaphorically – due to its LED technology. It is also light and good looking, around the size of a tablet computer. Although it does need to be plugged in (it’s 12 volts and requires decent current) this unit is easy to move around. It is also able to perch safely on small ledges, which is great (I did read reviews of previous generation tube-based solutions that seemed unwieldy).
Maybe not a bargain, but my research has revealed that not any “daylight spectrum” bulb will do. This puts a medically correct solution in an easy to use package.
Given how low the light is during winter in the UK, this seems like a good “insurance” policy to me. Although it’s quite bright it doesn’t really hurt the eyes if you look directly at it from a sensible distance.
I wouldn’t have it right next to my computer monitor though. The brightness can be problematic when it’s so close – it makes the screen harder to see.
It’s also very portable so you could take this with you wherever you travel, or just move it from room to room if you’re sharing one between a couple of people.
