Like a hot knife going through butter, really good saw easy to use done the job in minutes great value.
I finally decided against my better judgement to buy a small chainsaw for home use. I had a lot of tree limbs that needed cutting up for firewood and the ripsaw just wasn’t doing it. After a short search this model came out as Best Buy and at the price I couldn’t argue. It has been an outstanding buy. Initially sceptical of an electric model, it’s sliced through everything like a knife through butter. Couldn’t be happier. Just follow the instructions and buy relevant safety gear.
Assembly is easy BUT I made mistake of following the quick start type diagram, thought I was good to go, then read the manual and saw you are supposed to soak the chain before use! Not sure why they omit this stage in the quick start diagram! Thankfully it’s only 5 minutes to take apart again and do this.
Once correctly assembled how, the saw works a treat. I’ve only ever owned a strimmer before so the difference in cutting power is amazing.
Gripes : cord is no where long enough , you need an extension cord. Also make sure you order oil with it.
Overall very pleased with this, and deffo good value for money.
Arrived very quickly and was fairly easy to assemble despite wordless instructions and ambiguous pictures. Really cuts through wood with ease and isn’t too noisy. Miles better than a petrol driven chainsaw. if you are able to have a power supply to hand that is.
I am elderly and this was the first chain saw I had ever used. Having read a bit about their use I did purchase some protective accesspries before I used it. My first purchase of this product was with one that I could not ,make the chain fit but the replacement was excelent. The safty cut out worked very quickly, as it should, and assembling it was very qwuick and easy. I was surprised that I had the tighten the chain a couple of times in its first use but this was quick and easy and required no dimantling. It was slightly heavy for me when making horizontal cuts but this may be because of my age. If purchasing for the first time make sure youalso get chain saw oil as you wuill need it.
Used this loads and it works really well. Never had huge trees but some thick trunks and did well. Easy to put together, nice log lead. Replacememt blade good price so no need to resharpen just buy new one. Well pleased
it did a great job for just over a year, especially with a fresh chain, but the internal spring snapped and it no longer powers the chain. so you can hear the motor whirring but the chain doesn’t move. going to try and get it returned after just over a year or repair it, but i suspect it will be landfill :/
update: black & decker took this back and replaced it with a brand new one, so i can wholeheartedly recommend this. because of this i’ve added a star to make it a 5/5 product.
The chainsaw itself is good quality and motor runs fine and does the job of working the chain. However the chain that is supplied with the chainsaw lasted 20 minutes before it was blunt. After trying few chains I found that if you pair the black and decker chainsaw with an oregon chain to fit the black and deck what a nice bit a kit you have and not to pricey. Took me 30 minutes to remove two tree stumps from my garden they where 15cm-30cm in width of trunk.
A 2kW 14″ chainsaw for this money is pretty good value
Was pretty effective with every tree I used it on. Its pretty well balanced and the cord is just the right length.
When the tension is right and if you don’t use it on tiny stuff the chain stays on and hasn’t gone blunt over the last few days of use (I have done a lot of chopping down and chopping up of logs (about 8 trees so far) and the chain remains sharp.
I bought this saw to fell 30 foot high garden hedges that had grown out of control.
First I tried sawing through the thinner branches at the top, the saw was kicking like a mule because the branches were too thin and vibrating.
So I thought to hell with this and cut all of the hedges from the base.
The base of the hedges was extremely thick and with four to five inch branches coming from the base.
The saw did an absolutely outstanding job and all the hedges were down in no time at all.
Now I have the problem of breaking them up, but this is no reflection on the saw.
I give this saw full stars for shear performance.
It hardly used any chain lube oil too.
There is a little oil tank which you just top up with the oil, it has a clear and visible level indicator.
I recommend that you buy the oil and hat as a kit.
The photo is of the tree in the garden that I have pruned with the saw.
The saw could easily have cut through the lot
, but I wanted to keep the tree.
I guarantee that you will be happy with your purchase.
The saw is not heavy or too loud.
Much better than a petrol one.
Always wear full ppe as all chainsaws can be extremely dangerous.
Very easy to use and was able to take on a few large stumps. Great for regular garden sized trees, best gardening tool I have bought. Only down side is the instructions are very poor, I watched a few online clips about it which were much better.
Heavy, powerful but efficient. Easy to change chains cant fault this machine with over a years serious use. Make sure that you wear all the proper safety equipment, this can be a dangerous tool if not handled correctly.
ot the most robust of items .a lot of plastic. but has worked well cutting down quite big trees in my garden .created a lot of logs. a good alternative for when a petrol chainsaw is just a but to much
Talk about value for money. This is a great piece of kit, it is so safe to use and very easy to set up. Within a couple of hours, what would have taken days with a hand saw. Would highly recommend.
I bought this to replace my old Mcclough type. This works well. The chain stop is almost instantaneous on release of the trigger it activation of the safety guard.
Chain replacement is easy/quick & chains are readily available.
I would buy again.
I bought this chainsaw to fell a mature (if not especially large) willow tree in my garden. I had not used a chainsaw very much before. Because it is electric rather than petrol, I found it very easy and intuitive to use. This meant I could concentrate on safety and on the job rather than having to think about the engine all the time.
I found it very effective; I am very glad I bought it and would heartily recommend it for infrequent or small domestic tasks.
Before using a chainsaw, DO RESEARCH SAFETY! I was able to get some good safety gear (helmet, face/eye protection and gloves) on amazon, the whole lot coming to just over 100 pounds. Amazing value.
Better than I ever imagined it would be! This has more power than my petrol model I’ve been using for the last 5 years! No more mixing oil, no more pouring petrol & spilling it over the body & no more waft of 2 stroke burning! This chain saw is cleaner, quieter & more powerful! Instant blade stop when you release the trigger is brilliant!
Brilliant. I bought this up to chop up all my wooden pallets I use for my wood burner. It’s fantastic. It demolishes them in seconds. Would take me hours with a saw and electric saw to cut them all up…now, it really does take seconds. Great bit of kit.
Bought this to replace a Ryobi petrol chainsaw that seems to have just stopped working. There is a bit of assembly to put the chain guide and chain on, but nothing complex. The instructions are poor cartoons but it is easy to see what goes where. I used it to slice up some seasoned logs about 12-14 inches in diameter and it goes through them like cheese. Exactly what I needed. And it starts by plugging in and pressing a button rather than filling with petrol and tugging on a bit of string for ages. Obviously it is not professional quality, and having a cable would not really suit proper tree work, but for garden logs it is ideal.
I am delighted with my Black and Decker electric chainsaw
It is worth it’s weight in gold and I wish I’d purchased one sooner
I’ve only used it today spending 4 hours cutting a large pile of logs
In my opinion it has already paid for itself
Initially I wondered why this wouldn’t cut at all, but big Doohhh, you have to put the chain on the right way round. Just like a performance tyre runs in one direction, so does a chain!! Once that was sorted, this made short work of a 12″ tree trunk cut less than a week ago. Only minor adjustment of chain tension was needed, and you let the chain do the work, don’t force it just work with it. In an hour of work, it seemed to use very little oil. My only minor criticism is that the front hand hold could be an extra safety cut off, i.e. a separate switch such that if you let go of that it stops, since in theory this could be used single handed. However the chain stops almost instantly when let go, which to me is a lot safer than petrol versions. Hence I’ll still give it 5 stars, as I’m sure it will be fine for typical garden usage when used sensibly. Don’t forget to use a suitable whole face safety helmet as well, not just safety glasses, as splinters could fly off at some speed.
So far so good , nowhere near as powerful as a proper petrol jobbie but none the less great for small to medium sized branches , good design but make sure to tighten the orange tension knob up every few cuts or the chain is liable to come off.
An excellent machine. Easy to set up and cost less than the repair to my old one of a different make. They wanted nearly 100 just to replace the blade and bar. Would have given a full 5 stars if the Chain Brake System lever was not so stiff.
Perfectly good for my general needs and it’s more than enough for that. If you plan on a heavy worker however I think a petrol version may be a better option giving a bit more power. A well made household brand at a good price tag, does the job.
Got 2 Stihls, a professional 261 and a smaller 171, and this is just as quick as the 171. I am impressed. I bought it for cutting up lengths of logs / wood once I had got it home and for this job it’s better than my petrol 171. Doing this kind of job you are continually putting the saw down to position more wood and you either leave the petrol one running or re-start it everytime. With this electric one it stops as soon as you release the trigger and starts the moment you pull the trigger. It uses less chain oil too. No fumes , and if I do the job when the sun’s out the electricity is free from my solar panels, sorted.
Update, this is even better than I first thought. Its just cut all the wood in the photo (mix of hardwoods, old fenceposts etc) without needing to top up oil until I’d finished and even then the chain did not need sharpening. Don’t think it will be exclusive to B & D but chain seems to hold edge better than Stihls. I am impressed.
The only negative for me is the instruction booklet (90617138 REV-1) which on page 9 lists by name only 13 features when in fact there are 19 to be aware of. Yes, the information exists when you read the instructions, but you should not have to for search it! Also some of these items may need to be replaced at some stage. How about providing the principle part numbers, especially for the chain. Think the IKEA approach when supplying a product. I have already downloaded from else where the diagrams and part numbers. Technical drawings are not a problem for me, but some may struggle.
My Huskvarna chainsaw gave up the ghost and I was very dubious about going to an electric one but I can’t believe how good this product is. The only draw back is the cable you have to make sure it’s out of the way and have a long enough extension lead to get to the bottom of the garden.
It took me along time to decide about buying a chain saw, people say they are dangerous etc, but eventually I did purchase this one. I found it to be an excellent piece of kit and perfectly safe. The only awkward bit I found was fitting the chain and guide bar onto the unit. The chain has to be soaked in oil ( as per instructions ) then fitted to the guide bar, things can get a little slippy. But once assembled and set up it saws through logs like a knife through butter. I was cutting down trees for 4 hours and I only had to adjust the chain tension twice. It did a wonderful job.
The item came very well packaged, I did get a friend of mine to put it together, he seemed to have some difficulties in getting the chain aligned, but managed it in the end. The cable is long enough. Even I managed to saw off tree branches as well as cutting them into fire wood. But it is a dangerous item, so always think first before you are starting to use it.
Purchased to replace an older model back in March 2020, this didn’t even last out the year – same fault – the anti-snag clutch on the chain drive started permanently engaging, disconnecting the chain wheel from the drive every time it came in contact with whatever it was meant to be cutting. As safety features go, a must have but – when it renders the chainsaw a paperweight – not useful at all.
Both older and newer replacement units developed the same fault, which is a shame. Though no good for either lumber-jacks or power users – these corded, electric jobs are generally great for light to moderate use – gardening and sawing logs for the Winter. Easy to handle, maintain and are affordable.
The older model managed to make it through three seasons, this however didn’t last a year and though I’m sure its probably covered by warentee the chainsaw itself isn’t that much more than the carriage charge sending it in for repair.
UPDATED FEB 2021: Being as it it comes with a two year Warentee Black + Decker were good enough to honor the purchasing agreement and send me a replacement: I didn’t even have to return the faulty unit, just provide proof of purchase and send the label from the chainsaw to be exchanged for – couldn’t have been easier. I’m very happy with the replacement, managed to saw up my remaining logs for getting through winter and – if it packs up – it packs up, at least I will have gotten some use out of the thing.
Weather the problem encountered is a design fault or a fault in the way I’ve been operating them previously, only time will tell. I’m super cautious using these things and constantly switching them on and off whenever moving. It’s entirely possible this constant switching on and off may have accelerated wear and tear on the clutch however, you have to be safe using these things and walking around with a running chainsaw – not a good idea so bear in mind if purchasing, if somethings going to go on the thing, its probably the safety clutch. If that happens within two years, no big – if not, you may want to consider a different brand.
All said though I like the make, they’re solidly built and – in the main – reliable. Hope something in there helps.
Being bright orange, you can’t miss this chainsaw: it does look a bit plasticky, but is very effective in action. Fitting and tensioning the chain is straightforward and the clutch snaps nicely into place before it can be operated. I would have liked a small sample of chain oil to be included in the kit, but it is not, so don’t forget to order some when you buy. With suitable PPE, this feels safe to use and it cuts easily through the hardwood logs I have to process. It seems nicely balanced in use and comes with a couple of yards of tangle free cable.
This is a decent product. Relatively easy to put together although I was disappointed to find that the safety cover cannot be fastened down tight when the blade assembly is in place. A design flaw that, whilst not dangerous, should be corrected. I also think there should be a ‘dead mans switch’ on the second handle – to make sure that you’re holding this when you start the motor. Somebody would be tempted to use this one-handed as it’s light enough. Not a good idea.
Once assembled I gave the chain a good spray with a thin oil, filled the reservoir with rapeseed oil (organic and biodegradable – and a fraction of the price of ‘chainsaw oil’), donned protective gear and ear defenders, checked the chain tension, plugged it in, selected a fresh-cut 300mm diameter leylandii log, placed the guide spikes on the log and pressed the button.
The saw works a treat. It cuts into the log without fuss or drama and produces a neat pile of shavings. After 10 mins as per the instructions I checked the chain tension, tightened it a little and carried on. When you release the button, the chain stops almost immediately and the motor spins down for a few seconds – very good.
