Attached this to the side of my shed makes it so much easier when doing pond maintenance and turning things on and off. Also easy to fit electrical wires in and know it is all coming from the one spot.
Bought to replace a previous incarnation, which had served it’s purpose for many years, but had finally given up the ghost – plastic had gone brittle, rear case broke, on/off lights had burned out. The new model seems to have better indicator bulbs, and the internal screw to remove the ‘gubbins’ to allow ease of cable fitting is a definite improvement. That said, the whole unit has to be removed from the mounting plate to get at the 4 screws securing the case, so any repeated on and off means that you run the risk of damaging it. Why did they not think to have the screws on the front, so when the unit is fitted on the mounting plate it can all be left in place to get at the wiring connections? Seems simple (and obvious) to me.
A bit fiddly but well worth the effort if you persevere. Works well .
I used it for our pond pump and uv light still got one spare outlet !
Purchased for my new blagdon pond .easy to assemble due to unlike others that I viewed the hole unit comes out of the caseing to attach the wires ,would highly recommend.
This is a replacement an update for my old blagdon and its great like the new one much better than the old type
This was to replace an identical product I already had which had a couple of its lamps out, I downsized from the 4-way to the 3-way one as it gave me all I needed. I found it easy to wire and install and the indication lights show when each pump or UV light is on or off by the light colour.
Deciding where to site the box was the hardest part but once that was decided the installation was easy. Being able to remove the circuit board aids cable connection.
The product is very well made and eventually easy to fit ( it does help for the information telling you to remove pcb for wiring not being under the pcb, it would have been better in the rest of the instructions ). It does a good job.
I bought this after our old one, installed by the people who installed our pond pump, burned out for no obvious reason – possibly an inadequate fuse.
This is properly fused and the installation is a bit fiddly but easy enough with clear diagrams to assist. I’m running the pump, a lamp post and a set of lights off it and all seems to be working!
I found it easy to install, did not remove board.
Works as expected, time will tell
Purchased this to keep my pond cables tidy its brilliant you can isolate an item for maintenance ample connections, easy to connect and hang. Delighted with this product the junction box didn’t have to be hardwired which was a hugh bonus.
It’s a five way switch and does what it should do. Genius stroke is the removable circuit board that allows you wire it up much more easily. This one replaced an older five way switch where the board didn’t come out was a pain to wire. Seems very well constructed and was half the price of the same unit at my local aquatics store. Also has a single 1000w connection for larger loads which may be useful, although currently only powering an aerator, pump and 2 UV bulbs on the 400w supplies
Bought this as a replacement for another brand which had blown in a recent storm.
Some of the reviews are negative about the construction or ease of assembly – we had no such issues.
The unit is well made and the removable circuit board makes it much easier to connect wires, which was simple to do.
The bracket for the unit fixes separately and the unit then easily slides down on top.
Do not mount the unit before fixing the faceplate as the screws to connect the faceplate are tightened from behind.
The unit looks good and works well, highly recommended.
Very difficult small hole areas were wires connect into block slow process for connecting. Circuit board flimsy same as fuse holders and in light area nearly asked for a refund took hour off time to fit!
I purchased this product for a project in the Spring next year.
Have taken the unit apart and I can say that I’m pleased with design and quality.
Unlike the Blagdon UV Midi 28,000 pond filter I also purchased this product was packed well and did not suffer any transit damage.
Kind Regards
Joh
Good sturdy box and looks modern and is compact. Only problem found was when wiring in the connections. Very fiddly! Our armoured cable was also a little big to get into connectors. Functional and useful lights on i
This by far the best outside Pond/water feature switch box I have had. So easy to wire up and visually helpful with the on off lights Red off Green on so you know there is power there
This is a great piece if kit for your garden, we have our pond and our hot tub and water feature plugged into it and drives us peace of mind that their all safe
I bought a Blagdon switch box to replace another make that kept getting water in. Couldn’t solve the problem, but it had a side entry mains cable.
The Blagdon is all bottom fed and despite some reviews saying its fiddly to wire up, I found it very easy now you can remove the circuit board easily. Don’t forget to feed the cables through the glands in the case before wiring !!!!!.
The switch box has spare fuses mounted at the top. Everything is solidly made and hopefully will be durable. The mounting bracket is a good idea, letting you slip the unit off if required.
The only problem I have is the mains indicator light goes off at times, dry joint I expect or fault LED.
Hopefully it won’t trip the LCD.
I would buy again and recommend it.
Good quality components and manufacture with spare fuses supplied. But internal space for completing the wiring is limited. You have to get all wiring complete before it mounts on the wall, safety reasons I suppose, but means it’s hanging in the air while you make the connections. Also you need plenty of slack in the cables as it has to slide up before coming off the bracket. Difficult to make it look neat and tidy.
The button function is a bit woolly and sometimes it’s tricky to turn things off or on, you have to get the angle of press just right. The red LEDs are much fainter than the green, and the green light the garden up as they are on all the time that there is power to the box. Would be neater if they timed out.
I’m using the switch box to drive three pond pumps and an extension cable for an outside table lights It looks good (not just a boring white box) and was relatively easy to fit – the connections on all these type of switch boxes are pretty cramped but this was the best I’ve used … the box itself fits on a bracket so, allowing enough feed-cable, means you can take the box off making it easier to manipulate the cables into place.
One bit of advice (I got from Blagdon’s after contacting them) is not to tighten the screws (at the back of the box) that hold the front cover, too much. I’d put my box together but the first two buttons would work only if I held them on – they wouldn’t lock down. The problem, it turns out, is to screw the cover on with just enough to ‘bite’ to close/seal it (even if it seems a tad slack on the screws)
Its a great item, but done needs to look at simplifying the cable installation. Making the holes on the motherboard connector bigger would be a massive help, the metal bar is clearly there to stop the cables from falling out but it stops you getting the cables in, especially the power input cable that’s thicker. I installed 2 of these and for one it took 10 mins to install 15 cables for the pond items, but three bloody hours to install the power input cable due to the idiotic design. All it needs is to make the motherboard connector hole larger. Hopefully I won’t have to touch it again.
Received the item around 2pm and within an hour had installed it and got it working; the design is well thought out with the control board being able to be removed to aid cable fitting and the easy fit box mounting backing plate; it is true, however, that you need to allow a little slack cable to enable de-mounting and cable removal/installation. The only slight negative is that the construction of the board is a little flimsy around the LED light carrier where one of the securing screws was loose and would not tighten back, however I was able to easily repair this, and, even if I could not repair it, I doubt it would have impeded the normal operation of the unit.
I note that previous reviewers criticised the fact it would not take an armoured cable, however it clearly states the accepted cable sizes both in the listing, box and in the instructions and is primarily due to having to be connected to an RCD and ideally plugged into such. I in fact plugged this unit into my existing twin RCD weatherproof socket, located near to my pond, and meant I could run 3 pond devices ( pump, heater & air pump), easily controlling them without the need to open the weatherproof enclosure, during maintenance etc, leaving one socket free for additional kit like a pond vac etc.
Moving on to the other reported issue of buttons sticking, this is due to the necessarily tight fit to the outer casing of the rubberised buttons and dirt can catch the casing making the button stick and obviously a new unit will be stiff until worn in a little. This can be simply overcome by a small smear of silicone grease or vaseline to the button sides which gives just the right lubrication to enable reliable operation; in time dirt will build up so just wipe clean and re apply the silicone grease or vaseline and there you go! It is not a design floor but a periodic maintenance issue.
In conclusion I feel this control box is overall an excellent choice for safely running multiple devices with the convenience of switching them on and off easily with clear LED indication lights signalling what is on or off and what has a power feed.
After using a large waterproof box for my ponds electrics, this little gem is great. Wire straight into the box and switch on. No more labeling plugs to see which one is which and if one blows, you know which one it is. Only downfall is you have to remove the screws from the back. Otherwise a great product.
I use it for 3 pumps. 1 UV and a set of Air stones.
No issues with it.
Would be better it it came with a cord for the input. But I had a length of orange outdoor cable to use.
I used a 3A fuse on the input. More than enough. For
1x 95w pump 10000L/h
1x 85w pump 8000L/h
1x 45w pump 2300L/h
1x 16w Air stones 30L/min
1x 13w Oase Biopress filter 11W UVC
Each outlet is separately fused internally too. 1 at 5A and 4 at 1.5A.
Has a max load of 1 x 1000W and 4 x 300W should you need that much.
Product came on time very clear instructions a little fiddly to wire but was expected as most electrical items are the same when whirring more then two cables in to a box. like most people i read the reviews so had a good idea about the product and some problems people have did read about the switch button that’s it don’t switch back on when pressed off and they removed the cover to switch back on ? The rubber that covers the switch from water is new and some times you will come a cross this I had this problem (light switch I wired in) all I did was pull on the rubber what covers the switch and it switches back on you will feel the switch click so don’t need to remove cover all ok know as it has been used a few times just remember sometime things need to be used to free up
Its a good product i like the design in general. But the manufacturer should consider keeping more space for connection from the bottom of the box as well as the space btween the wires i.e. the N,E,L wires.
If they consider that i will buy this product again.
The shipping time was excellent i got it 3 days before expected date.
This is the second Blagdon Powersafe Switchbox I have installed. The seals on the first failed after umpteen years in use and multiple openings for cable changes, additions, removals etc which resulted in the gradual loss of the screws which clamp it tight against the seal. I cannot, therefore, offer any criticism of the device and I was more than happy to install another.
At new, the led’s are bright and the stick on labels for each circuit are clear. However, after a dozen years or so, I found that the led’s faded and the stick on labels, well, didn’t stick on. Neither were surprising given that the box has lived outside all its life, fully exposed to rain, snow, heat, sunshine and, of course, muck. Not only do I have no complaints in this regard, in retrospect I’m both surprised and pleased they lasted this long.
In my experience this is a good buy. I’ve only rated it 4 stars rather than 5 for value because I really don’t know the market and I was never going to look for an alternative.
The internal circuit board is now easily detachable to enable an easier cable installation, a great improvement on what was sometimes a tricky action. Each circuit is protected by its own internal fuse which are easy to replace.
I have a couple of these as i have a large pond and needed outlets for water pumps, uv’s, air pumps, skimmer, lights etc, So i purchased 2 of them built a little brick cupboard (my air pumps are a bit noisy i used to keep all my pond electrics in the shed but have recently moved pond) the cupboard keeps down the noise on the air pumps, and it situated by my garden seating area so easy access and use. I was surprised how easy this was to install, I had a friend over qualified electrician but think i was just being a bit over zealous as i think i could have quite easily put these in myself was all done and re-routed through the new boxes in less than an hour and they seem to be doing the job they need to do, So big thumbs up from me.
Purchased this to replace the Blagdon 5 outlet remote box that I had previously fitted 3 years ago which to my great disappointment failed. After this disappointment I decided to go for simpler on off switches as a 5mt walk into the garden in the winter was not such an inconvenience after all.
Unit seems good value compared to price at my local aquatic outlet.
Found it a little fiddly to wire up the garden components (Blagdon garden lights and two Oase pond pumps, power inlet). I thought that it would be a quick task to unplug the old plugs from the old unit and plug these in to the new unit, job done. No. Clearly I did not look at the images properly as there are no plugs/sockets on this design. The cables are all hardwired in which for me should not be an great issue but it does mean that any components are either wired in or they are not. This does mean that if one wants or needs to disconnect a garden component then there is the task of unscrewing the cover to the Switchbox and unscrewing the wire connections. Hopefully I will not need to do that too often and hopefully this unit will last much longer than the previous purchase
