I bought this as part of a duo bundle with the facial epilator. Although this item is expensive I think you get what you pay for in terms of performance, longevity and the availability of replacement blades. I use this mainly for the shaver attachment as I am not yet brave enough to epilate my legs (I will try that when I’m feeling brave). The unit needs charging before the first use which took around 2 hours. The shaver gave a good close shave which is equivalent to a shave using a razor without taking the top layer of skin off!. For those of you who last used an electric shaver years ago I would highly recommend trying this one – it is a massive improvement on bygone ladies shavers. I thought the light on it was a gimmick – I was wrong as it really shows up the hairs you are aiming for. You will eventually need to replace the blade head but it is easy to find suppliers by going to the Braun service site – address in instructions. Very impressed and highly recommend this product.
It’s pretty good, not perfect though as it takes a really long time and it leaves behind a stubby feeling because it doesn’t remove the short hairs. It’s excellent quality though and works a Heck of a lot better than the cheap and cheerful one that I replaced. There’s an old saying; buy cheep and buy twice, and that’s very true
it is amazing even under the shower and it doesnt let the hair grow under the skin! LOVE IT!
I bought this to replace a corded one I’d had for 20 years. The cordless, little light, different heads for epilating and trimming and waterproof features are a Godsend. The charge lasts for ages and charges quickly. However, I’ve not worked out how to epilate underarms without ripping the skin and the rollers feature fell off after a few uses. So 4 stars not 5.
Unless you live in a hotel with shaver plugs, you will need to purchase a plug converter separately – disappointing this isn’t included.
This had me a little peeved, but now that I’ve sorted that and had time and opportunity I have to say – I’m an epilator convert!
Here’s the DL:
Number One:
Yes it is painful, and especially painful your first use. Everybody is different, so if you have thick, coarse hair or a low pain tolerance this product might not be for you.
The first time is painful for a number of reasons – namely this will be the most amount of hair you will have to remove in a session. After this, it will just be touch ups. If you’ve never waxed before, just set your expectations and be prepared to feel a little raw. Take breaks and take your time.
Number Two
You probably won’t get a smooth finish your first time. You need to learn how to use the device – its very tempting to go fast, jerk away from the pain. If you have longer hair, you will find it will snap rather than pull from the root. In these instances, you’ll need to wait for the hair to grow longer to get them next time. Pay attention to the angle you hold the device and how light to hold it – it’s not a razor, hold lightly and work slowly.
Number Three
If you get to learn the device and enjoy the results, I guarantee you won’t go back to any other hair removal method. I find with shaving my hair grows back quickly and I will get stubble and 5 o’clock shadow within hours. I also hate the yoga I have to do in the shower to shave, the risk of cuts and feeling like I’m about to pass out from all the bending and got water. Waxing is effective but expensive – I prefer privacy and space to do my own maintenance. That’s where epilating comes in – the cost of this device has saved me so much money.
I love that I can watch TV and epilate, I love that the hair stays gone for a long time and I also have noticed a reduction in the darkness of my armpits.
Battery life I find really good, I find it doesn’t take long to epilate and it has yet to run out of charge in the middle of use for me.
The biggest inconvenient for this product is the fact you can only charge it in the shaver plug if you’ve got one or you need to buy an adapter or a usb adapter otherwise
I was due an upgrade from my Panasonic epilator that I have had for about 5 years.
In comparison, this epilator is so much better. The hair comes off with one or two swipes while using dry. However, in the shower it isn’t as effective but still does the job well. I use this device all over my body, I haven’t tried my face but I think it might be too bulky for that.
Decided to upgrade after my older model seemed to take years to do one legthis was more expensive, but well worth it.
Much faster and easier to use. The torch on this one actually shows the hairs properly and legs felt soft and smooth after using.
Not brave enough to use anywhere other than legs just yet, but I’d recommend this product for that at least.
I have shaved over 35 years and bought this for my teenager daughter who wanted one . I started using it as well and I can’t believe I haven’t been converted much earlier . First time is painful but you get use to it and if you do in a bath it’s much less painful .
As I approach the menopause, my woman beard is getting worst, sadly. I’m all for smashing the patriarchy but I don’t want to walk round with hairs sprouting from my chin and neck. Especially because I have afro hair so they are extremely tough and some of them are white now.
I was getting them threaded but due to the different rates of growth I was visiting every week.
Initially I was a bit worried about pain but it was fine. Maybe because I’m used to threading. Admittedly it was a bit painful on the sideburns which were too long.
The end result is stunning. Smooth as a baby’s bottom and no problems with razor bumps.
I was a bit skeptical at paying 75 reduced in the black Friday sale, but worth every penny and much cheaper than laser treatment!
Having used an epilator for years I had to replace my old one and this is absolutely brilliant. No pulling of the skin, lovely smooth head, really pleased and would buy again as and when I need a new one
I’d used an epilator before, but this is the next gen for me. Cordless makes this sooo much more easy to use, the light helps expose those hidden hairs that you can feel but can’t ordinarily see. Having a high tweezer number, than some of the epilator’s advertised, gives more hair clearance. Leaves my skin really soft too. Not used the product under running water yet, as that is meant to make the process almost painless. Recommend this product whether you’ve epilated before or not.
Moving from silk-epil 5 to 9 was well worth it. It removes hair exceptionally well.
I would give 5 stars if the battery lasted a bit longer.
I bought this epilator when my original one (I’ve had for years!) bit me and broke the skin.
I am ecstatic.. It is lovely to hold comfortably, has a very handy light to highlight the stray hairs and removes much more than my old epilator. Being cordless is the step I didn’t really I was missing and it’s easy to charge. Took it away on holiday and had no issues.. Brilliant purchase and now don’t know why I didn’t upgrade my epilator sooner.
Really pleased with this. Was surprised at how little pain, I’ve had several different ones of these over the years and never usd for long due to it being painful but this is surprisingly little pain. I’ve been using it for a while now and I’m happy with the results
This epilator is just brilliant. I have had it for about a month now and I have only had to use it twice and my legs are still really smooth. I had the epilator 7 before but I find the larger had on this one makes the process so much quicker. I totally recommend this one and I have very happy with my purchase.
Bought as a replacement for an older model which had a dying battery
The only reason I’ve not marked 5 stars is because it does exactly the same as my 10 year old one, but with a better battery life
I think I’d expected it to be a bit better, but it does what it says!
Great multipurpose product – you can shave, trim and also epilate, really easy to switch out each part. Never epilated before and expected it to be extremely painful, but I was pleasantly surprised. Used it on my legs with the massage cap and it was uncomfortable in some places but never unbearable (and I don’t have a high pain tolerance), so far really impressed, don’t be scared of it!!
A friend gave me her Silk-pil 4 or 5 at least 20 years ago and it finally broke the other day, so I decided to upgrade to a newer model. The new one is just as good at removing hairs, but the big improvement is that now it really doesn’t hurt at all to use it, even on the front of the thighs which was always the most painful place on the legs. Very impressed and wished I’d upgraded years ago.
This is my second epilator, the first was a very basic and cheap model that you turned on and it pulled out the hair. Simple.
This one has the added advantage of that moving head, a light and a pressure sensor, all three of which I have found to be extra handy.
The old one I had was my first ever epilator and it kinda hurt. I’m not gonna lie, you’ll still feel this one, but it hurts less and as it’s a more efficient device you won’t need to go over the same area multiple times. But as I said, you’ll FEEL this one, but I wouldn’t call it pain. Plus, as with any epilator you do get used to the feeling so the “pain” lessens over time anyway.
I also find that as it’s a quite powerful little thing, the motor creates a vibration that feels good in the skin, almost like a bit of a massage which helps to hide the discomfort and you come away with really good feeling legs.
Comparing this one to my old device again, the hair re growth is much, much slower. I have no idea how that works, but it does. There’s also fewer ingrown hairs occurring.
I find the light is excellent and provides just the right amount of light at the right angle to see all those pesky fine, blonde hairs. Yep, this device is good enough to get rid of those too.
The battery warning is excellent to let you know you need to charge it soon, rather than just running out mid leg.
The pressure indicator is a lifesaver. With the old one I had, I never knew how much pressure was too much, but this keeps me right.
Still not brave enough to try the under arms though.
This was a replacement buy for the same model that I’d bought and happily (well maybe happily would be a stretch – it pulls hair out by the roots ) used for several years. I was disappointed to find that they’d left out my preferred head .but it wasn’t a deal breaker. They’ve made the head a little bigger but the overall make feels a little bit cheaper. It played up the other day pretending it hadn’t been charged, but when I plugged it in for a few seconds it got it’s act together. I will be keeping an eye on this and will report back if it continues.
Bought the silk epil 9 on offer and glad I did. Been using the 5 for about a year now and as I’ve got used to the epilation I’m moving more towards efficiency over pain reduction. The 5 is small and starting to lose power. I went for the 9 as it has a wider head (seen in picture). Love the spot light and the whole process is now quicker and smoother. It does come with a roller head for beginners if needed – would recommend.
Works perfectly, the amount of pain you experience will be based on the area, but more specifically the thickness of the hairs themselves, if you’re male it’s going to be quite painful initially. You can mitigate some of this initial pain via submerging yourself and epilating under water. Gets less painful as you adapt, however I believe it’s more so the fact that the hairs get progressively thinner, takes a few weeks to months to notice the difference. Not the growth rate, but the actual thickness of the hair.
Tried it all over, it’s not too bad, armpits are alright, legs are good, arms a little worse than legs, chest and abdomen are more than bearable. The only area that’s agonizing in the groin, however you can if you’re determined, easily achieve it.
Strongly recommend this is you’re looking for an epliator, you’ll require a specific adaptor if you’re wanting to charge it in a standard UK plug (UK Charger Adapter Shaver Socket 2 Pin to 3 Pin Electric Converter)
LOVE this. Having used an old Silk Epil 5 for many years, it’s wonderful to have this cordless one and it’s a bit bigger, so covers a greater area, doesn’t seem to hurt as much even with the non-massaging head, and does a better job! VERY pleased with it. I nearly went for one of a different make until I read it wasn’t to be used on thighs, face or bikini line and my Silk Epil 5 did all of those and so does the 9, VERY well! The biggest thing is to make sure skin is taught. But LOVE it!
Recommend! It is painfull but possible to survive. I wasnt using for many years and now decided to buy. Wasnt that bad as
I was thinking. Saves my time in the shower every day. Worth every . Dont be scared to buy. I am not writing reviews for each product I buy but for this worth it. Batterry lasts 2h. Skin was irritated but need to mention that if U will use aloe vera or any other moisture cream wont be bad.
I have epilated for over 25 years and have found over those years that Braun have cornered the market and really are the best for epilation in my opinion. I have always used the leaded version as I tried cordless once and wasn’t impressed. So I found myself needing a new epilator and decided to give this one a go, though a bit more expensive. I’m so glad i did as it’s worth every penny. The charge really lasts and it epilates like a dream with no pulling under the arms, so far the best epilator I have bought.
I’ve never used an epilator before, so wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of pain. But honestly, I didn’t find it painful at all! I’ve only done my legs so far, and it just felt like it was a gentle scratch. Quite nice in fact! The light is very bright, and really helps to see those little hairs you might otherwise miss. I like the fact I can change the epilator head for a shaver, for those areas I might not want to epilate, or to shorten long hairs before epilating. Haven’t tried the face brush yet – I hadn’t actually realised that was part of what I was buying. Not something I would have chosen as an add on if it had been an option. However, overall it is a brilliant product, and it looks nice too
Firstly, I will tell you why I love this epilator, and then I will explain how to prevent a rash/folliculitus which can be a common complaint of people who epilate.
EFFECTIVENESS – very! It picks up every hair except the very shortest (which are barely noticeable) and reduces regrowth over time. The battery power is amazing (over 2 hours…enough to do full leg, bikini, underarms plus a few other areas very thoroughly).
COST – so much cheaper than getting waxes, but just as effective (if not more, since it can be done more frequently and pick up shorter hairs).
CONVENIENCE – so easy to use, you can fit it in around your schedule as no need for a beauty salon appointment and you can get into a good routine with it but also touch up in between.
PAIN? – I find it less painful than waxing and it becomes less painful every time you do it (your body adjusts, but also there’s fewer and finer hairs to remove).
RASH? – The first time I used it, I got a horrible rash (folliculitus) but after some research I discovered that the solution is to simply shower after using as well as before. This is because when you remove hair from the root there can be kind of like pus in the hair follicle which can turn into a spot, but if you cleanse your skin, this gets rid of the bacteria. Also, applying aloe Vera gel is very beneficial as it is antiseptic, soothing and mildly exfoliating. Regular exfoliation (e.g. with salicylic acid treatments) is the key to prevent ingrown hairs and reduce breakouts.
OVERALL – I have no regrets! I ended up buying the Braun Face Spa too as I wanted a smaller facial epilator. It’s worth noting that you may need a pair of tweezers as well to do some fiddly areas (bikini line). I was nervous because there was the odd negative review and I am usually hopeless with beauty gadgets, but this is easy to use and very effective!
So pleased I bought this. I was unsure at spending so much money on an epilator as I had an original Silk Epil already, but my old one was close to a torture device, it would take hours to complete just up to my knee & that would feel like slicing glass up my legs! So I wanted to see if they were all the same and all as painful. Turns out they’re not, and this one is great as it makes it so much easier to be able to use it in the shower / bath. The heat makes it much less painful.
Good product! I bought this after my 10 years old Braun epilator died. It was good so i stuck with the brand. It is super easy to use and love the cordless thing! It hurts way less than the previous one and does remove hair significantly better! The shaver is so good, i was not expecting it to be this efficient, shaved a bit just to try it out. Battery lasted for about an hour and it still looks like plenty is left considering i have about 4ft of legs. Really nice value for money. Wish it did not come in the plastic support thing, such a waste!
I have been using braun epilators for almost 2 decades. And they have been excellent. I had 2 braun (+1 philips) corded ones previously and the latest one I had was silk epil 7 with all the gadgets that came with it. None of the epilators broke nor had issues, I just wanted an upgrade and so bought new ones. I had no issues with silk epil 7 and it was working really well. The only criticism I had was that I wish that it could hold the charge a little longer.
The silk epil 9 that I bought here was rose gold in colour and looks beautiful.
This new silk epil 9 is 40% wider which I must admit that I did not expect it to make any difference but it did make a huge difference. I was hoping with the the new silk epil 9 that I could interchange the handle between the 7 and 9 and that way I get double the charge. And I can! Yay!
I found that I dont find it as painful with the epil 9 in comparison to the 7. Maybe because its new I feel this way.
The weight of silk epil 9 feels relatively the same as 7.
The silk epil 7 and 9 both have lights. The light on the 9 is brighter than the 7.
The tweezer size are bigger on the epil 9, in comparison to the 7.
All in all definitely worth the money and very effective. I have found that braun products are generally very reliable.
Update September 2020:
I’ve been using it for about a month now. I find that it’s definitely more efficient than silk epil 7. I find that it’s better at removing all the hair and also it doesn’t take as long to epilate. It also didn’t feel as sore as silk epil 7. It doesn’t feel as much as a chore now to epilate. Definitely glad I upgraded. I am very happy with it.
This is my first epilator so I can’t compare to other brands but I can to shaving. This is brilliant. I will next return to shaving my legs again.
On the first use each leg hurt for about 5 min then the rest was fine. For the first couple of weeks I used the epilator twice a week. Now I use it once a week. From looking at guilds online I suspect in a couple months I will be using every other week.
The product is easy to use and clean. My only complaint is that the first use I did get the full 50min battery life. After having this for about 6 weeks I now get about half an hour battery. At the moment I am considering buying a second device because at least then I could do both legs in full in one sitting.
