I found it really tricky working out how to connect up and get it printing – had to call the tech help line. Very helpful and what fantastic results. My wife intends taking this on our Europe caravan tour for scrap book purposes.
I bought this for my elderly mother who complains bc she can’t see her photos on her iPhone as she isn’t very tech savvy and doesn’t know how to find them in the photo app it’s so easy to set up and the picture quality is fantastic.. so pleased with this photo printer..
As usual, I bought this on “offer”. I don’t really know what I’m going to do with it. The consumables are expensive, overall you pay 30-40p/ photo which is close to photo lab price. The printing process is slow and the connectivity not straightforward. However, when you use direct connection via wlan seems alright. This stops you accessing the cloud so more work to plan ahead.
The print quality is excellent. The colours are bright enough but on a cooler side.I was not able to find the colour profile which would’ve been helpful to calibrate the display. The Canon app is almost useless, cannot print RAW format or large size photos. Feels plasticky and flimsy.
Conclusion: I have the feeling that I’m going to print 10 more photos then it’s going to be covered in dust then I’m going to print 10 more photos after one more year and dust again. Not bad enough to send it back but cannot see any real use. Maybe some fridge photos?
Pro: Picture Quality, Ease of use, Compact size, Build Quality
Con: Max 6×4 picture size, Expensive consumables, Battery sold separately.
Prints straight from an iPhone it’s perfect, and there great quality, xx
Getting it connected to my Wi-Fi is a bit of a fad but once done the print quality is superb
Present for my parents who love to print all of their pictures – never seen them so happy – great quality prints and after I’d set it up for them they can both easily print straight from their phone / laptop / Ipad
This is a really nice printer. The picture quality is first class – really like it. Just like the old days with good quality printed pictures. It’s a pity that the refills are a bit on the expensive side. Still, worth it to see a limited number of pictures in frames again! The software is pretty easy to set up, and we can print from iPads, Android phones etc. so very good cross-platform support. Once the app is set up, away you go. Very straightforward! The printer is small, but needs a bit of space at the front and back of it as the photo page goes back and forth through the printer a few times during the print process – so don’t back it against a wall when you’re printing, otherwise the photo will be bent and most likely damaged.
Simple and easy to use . Quality is good. Manual could be better but I managed to figure out what I wanted to know.
I was looking for a way to print different sizes of photos (up to 4×6) and stick them to the fridge. I spent weeks researching and I decided to pick this one. So far I love it.
Pros:
– quick printing
– relatively cheap cartridge and paper
– easy to use
– app allows to combine multiple photos in one
Cons:
– you need to “waste” 4/5 photos before finding the right colour settings (out of the box the print colours are a bit flat and not vivid)
– the (iOS) app is unusable if you try to browse all the photos. A solution would be to create a folder and keep the photos to print in there
Definitely I would suggest it!
This product is great , easy to use , easy to set up.
The paper loads into a small tray on the front and you just slip the dye cartridge in through the other side .
The Canon app is in my opinion is clunky to use , but once you get the hang of it it’s produces great results .
Good colour reproduction straight from the phone which saves a lot of time messing around with brightness & saturation .
Would I recommend ?
Yes I’ve tried lots of small photo printers over the years and this (in my opinion) is by far the best I’ve used so far .
I use my selphy for printing photos for my journal. I also have a sprocket photo printer but the Selphy is much more cost effective.
I use a grid app and put 4 photos on each selphy photo paper sheet, the small photos fit my journal perfectly.
The quality is very good, better than the sprocket, the picture is sharper and clearer.
It was fairly easy to set up… I watched a YouTube video which made it easier.
Enjoy it you won’t regret investing
The Selphy CP1300 is a small and compact photo printer, photos may be printed wirelessly from your pc/mobile/camera if your camera supports it. There are other ways to print photos if if you do not have a wireless option.
Picture quality is as good as your photography, nice clean sharp photos printed at 300×300 dpi. You have to purchase ink and photo paper separately – non supplied with the Selphy to get you started when you receive the product. Cheaper compatible paper & ink sold around 23.99 does print fine with this printer. Some comments said they didn’t print after one photo. Read the instructions for correct installation of ink ribbon and print paper.
An all round fantastic product for your home or away from home. Why go to a photo booth and pay 5 for passport photos (35×45 mm) when you may print your own with this printer for approx 23p. Photos printed in approx 50 seconds. Maximum photo paper sheets in tray is 18, do not try to add any extra sheets.
I’ve wanted a home printer for a while as I used to hate using the machines in shops because if I had my phone and tried to print from that, the pictures often had very large borders and a small picture. This machine is so handy and the quality is great! You can put a SD card in or connect wirelessly with your phone , it is compatible with my iPhone wirelessly but doesn’t seem to support my iPhone if I plug it in to the USB port, but I guess it will work with just a USB key… you have to buy the photo paper and ink seperately but they’re not expensive and last a long time
Back in the 80s, you could make your black and white printer into colour by swapping the ribbons out for yellow, red and blue ribbons and use some software to resend the print job while you swapped the ribbons out. Took ages and the quality was poor at best. This printer uses a similar principle but my word it’s come on in leaps and bounds. The printer sends the photo paper through 4 times coating it with different colours. The quality is incredible, and it’s very quick. Prints are comparable with most high street quick print machines. I think the quality Ive had from online services is slightly better, but I just wanted some quick prints – and this fits the bill perfectly. Ive sent prints from my smartphone and it’s worked fine, bit weird that the quickstart guide tells you to use the printer as a wifi direct unit (you connect to the printer as if it was your router). My other printer is just connected to my network as a network device. It’s fine, just you cant get on the internet through your wifi when connected. Looks like you can put it on your network, but youd need to download the manual. It drops a star because printing via an sd card plugged into it requires you to interact with some really ropey software. Its very unintuitive, you’ll end up prodding around it looking for the right option. The preview window always just shows a blue screen for me. My advice would be for you to copy the photos you want to print to another sd card or usb stick and just stick that in and print. Trying to navigate around the interface looking for the right pictures on a full sd card will send you mad. There is a good app called Selphy Photo Layout which isnt in the manual which allows you to put multiple photos on one page. If the software on the device could get a refresh it would be perfect.
Bought this as a replacement for an old photo printer that sadly ‘died’ after many years use. Took me a while to sort out the Wi-Fi from the smartphone (due mainly to age and no youngsters to help out !) but got there in the end and do have to say the results are amazingly good. Very pleased.
I use this device to create ‘instant’ prints for customers when at events that I am photographing so they can have something to take away there and then before I produce up to A1 sized final images.
This small printer produces a very high quality image – as long as you use a reasonably good camera on a smartphone, tablet, pocket camera or full-sized DSLR. In about 1 minute it gives perfectly acceptable, lab standard 6×4 prints. The menus are not the best of designs that I have seen but they are functional. Canon should seriously consider getting UX experts from the national market they are aiming at so as to ensure using the kit is a good as the output from it. Not all customers will be IT experts or used to Canon’s design philosophy with its operating systems.
I have the battery pack as well because some venues can be difficult about mains power, or I may be at a shoot with no power available. That pack gives greater flexibility and should give around 50 prints.
Connectivity is either direct via USB, or it acts as its own wireless access point, or you can put an SD memory card in too. The dye sub cartridges are simple to change and last around 50 prints.
The only criticism that I really have is that Canon don’t include either dye-sub cartridges or paper with the unit so remember to order it with the printer.
For this money (109) it is worthy of serious consideration.
I love the ease and simplicity with which I can now print from my phone. This single factor beats every negative issue I have found so far.
Sometimes the print quality is not so good in terms of the colour saturation in the final prints.
Tones and hues are far from perfect but how much does this matter to you?
If you want professional quality prints, then the chances are that you wont be taking pics on your phone anyway – you’ll be using a DSLR attached to a full scale printer.
If it’s snapshots and memories you’re seeking then look no further.
I love my Canon Selphy!!
On the whole this is a great little printer, the quality is very good, certainly on a par with prints you can get done in a shop instantly, but not quite as good as prints you get done in an hour or so. They use different machines and if you look carefully you can see the difference.
My main gripe with this printer is that it doesn’t seem to support jpegs saved directly from Photoshop, you need to run them through Bridge which is really annoying. Photos from a phone etc seem fine.
Have had various ink jet printers over the years and am fed up with the ink drying out and wasting money. The selphy produces photos with excellent quality every time. I am well impressed. Each print costs about 27p but at least I know how many prints I am going to get with the ink and paper pack. Photos of the family restored to the lounge and on permanent display. Doesn’t take up much room and can print directly to it from Apple and Android devices.
i mainly bought this little printer for to print odd photos as my inkjet keeps drying up when not in use for awhile and waster ink to clean the print heads
but with this printer you can leave it for weeks or more and it just works straight away without the above grief
the paper and ink cartridges are a tad expensive but not massifly so
i just wish they would make an A4 version of it that would be the dogs best bits for me
hope this review has helped
I initially found this printer while looking for a way of running a photobooth at our School Summer Fete offering instant prints. Compared to most of the other options, this little printer provides much better quality, much larger and cheaper printing than the competition. You can print up to postcard size (10x15cm right to the edge) and images are printed in approximately 1 minute. Kids (and grownups alike) find it mesmerising to watch the paper being fed through 4 times, adding each colour layer to the print. And as soon as they pop out, they are dry and mostly waterproof!
I’m reliably informed that the print process (dye-sublimation) is far superior to the print process of the various small format printers (Fuji Instax etc.) and I must say I’m impressed with the quality vs my great big A3+ Canon Pixma. It’s also certain to get a great deal more use than that too, due to size and ease of connection!
Print price is also excellent – you can pick up a 108 shot pack for approximately 25, making it 23p per print – much cheaper than the equivalents from other manufacturers. What’s even better is that there’s no ink to dry up or nozzles to clean. This means no wastage and you can come back to it, having not printed for months, and it’ll just work straight away. In case you’re wondering, it has a kind of 4 colour ribbon that it passes over the paper and heats to apply the image to the paper. You can buy generic replacements, but in my experience, the slight saving is not worth the loss in image quality – 23p for a quality 6×4 print seems very reasonable to me.
Connection is simplicity itself and you have 3 different options:
1) Direct connection from device to printer. The printer creates it’s own wireless network which you connect your device to. The printer then advertises it’s service on the ‘network’ and your devices find and can print to it. This is perfect for my use-case as I won’t have any wifi in a school field! It’s also the most easy to set up and perfect for printing off a few shots from your phone or tablet. I’ve used both IOS and Android and the printer was found and printed to with no issues. There are also apps for both OSes, which automate the procedure and allow you to print effortlessly from your device images.
2) Connect the printer to your wireless network. It’s quite fiddly entering the password (it’s not touch screen), but once you’ve done it, it will remember (even when you switch between this and direct connection in 1) so you won’t have to re-enter it again. This allows anyone on your network to find the printer and connect to it. Using my mac, it uses AirPrint so didn’t require any drivers. It worked flawlessly and provides a dead easy way for the whole family to print to it without changing networks. It also means you can print images that are not stored on your device (Google Photos etc.) as you still have an active internet connection
3) USB connection to a PC/Mac – although I think you’ll need to source yourself a cable. I haven’t tried this, but might be a good option if all else fails (unlikely)!
If you want to go fully wireless, there’s even an accessory battery (sold separately) that allows you to ditch the power cord. The battery slots into the printer, providing you with the ultimate mobile printing solution.
I really can’t speak highly enough of it. It just works, and will mean that a lot more of my photos are freed from their device prisons!
Pretty cool little printer, easy to set up and with the app you can print straight from a phone/camera without any cables. Be warned though, if you are purchasing this as a portable printer the battery is not included. The power cable however is included. Picture quality is actually pretty good for such a small printer, and the paper comes in a variety of sizes so you can print different sized photos. However the paper and ink both are also not included, so if you do but this be sure to order all the extras at the same time to avoid disappointme
I should have read the description more closely but this comes with no consumables and therefore cannot be used until they have been purchased. Why Canon don’t include a small starter pack is beyond me the saving must be tiny. That aspect has taken the pleasure away from the purchase especially as this was bought as a gif
As a keen photographer I was dubious that this could match external prints, and I wasn’t expecting it to as it’s a home product created for ease of use, at a surprisingly good price.
I was dumb founded (and still am) at the quality of the prints. The resolution/detail is excellent, colour reproduction excellent and quality of the material excellent.
Pros:
– Small machine
– Pretty easy to use
– Wifi works surprisingly well
– Print quality
Cons
– The print size is not 4″ x 6″ but slightly less (5% less or so).
What I have been doing to print is:
1) Initially download and install the Selphy printer driver. This allows one to print directly to the printer (which connects to wifi and can communicate with a wired desktop machine – which is great).
2) I have been using Capture one (similar to Lightroom) to edit the photos, and crop them to a 100x150mm ratio. I crop them to allow 5% cropping by the machine.
I also increase exposure a bit as the printer tends to print slightly darker than on screen (though my screen is not calibrated so that could be me).
Then I print directly to the printer from Capture one.
The printer communicates for around 5-10 seconds then prints over aprox 50 seconds.
Quite easy.
If you want to use photoshop, however, it’s more complicated. When attempting to print a file from PS, an alert occured stating that the image would be cropped. I thought this would be the 5% cropping, however, it was cropped aprox 30-40%.
There are instructions around how to (possibly) setup the printer with PS so that it works, however, rather than doing this I save the file, switch back to Capture one (where it appears automatically) and print it from Capture one as that works.
There are people who report that the ink runs out before the paper.
I was concerned taht this would be the case with my first pack of paper/ink as after using 2 of the 4 paper packs, 2 of 3 of the ink cartridges were also used. I assumed that the last ink cartridge would not print the remaining half of the paper, yet, for some reason, it did. The ink ran out at exactly the last paper print. Odd.
If you know about the above minor points, the printer will be more than satisfactory.
I have now ordered 5 more ink/paper packs (not from amazon – you can find it 3 pounds cheaper from an online store dedicated to ink products).
My main thought now is that I hope that the printer lasts a few years, as I’m going to be using it a lot. Many ideas for photo projects are now appearing (photo books as presents for friends/family, photos on walls, of course, for school projects).
Perfect for our needs. I would give it 5 stars but I still can’t get the app to edit. My partner has figured it out after much mumbling. Photos do work out a tad expensive but no more than you would pay for a single at the shop, and without the hassle of actually going to the shop.
This is my second Selphy, my previous version I passed on to someone as it was no longer compatible with my computer but still going strong!
I like the ease and portability of be able to print any where. I have other printers on which I can print larger size images, but as I don’t use it regularly it wastes a lot of ink setting up and then is not used again for sometime.
This model prints postcard size from Wi-fi, NFC, USB and although not cheap, the prints are hassle-free and readily available.
