We’ve had a fire like this before, and it’s undoubtedly somewhat old fashioned in appearance. However, it’s very difficult now to get a decent radiant fire – the smaller, cheaper ones don’t last five minutes! Most electric heaters now are either fans or radiators, and don’t give that cosy direct heat that is so nice to sit by. To heat one room, it’s much cheaper than running the central heating and, even at current prices, it’s cheaper than an open fire unless you have a free supply of logs.
I love this kind of electric fire. No awful fan. Comforting fire effect. Baroque decoration a bit tacky. Glad that they are still available.
Arrived a day late but worth waiting for.
Minus 5 outside, with living room doors and curtains closed, just one bar (600 atts) has our medium sized iving room at a cosy 23 C. About 20 p. per hour at pre electricity cost inflation prices. I’m still on a fixed price deal until the end of February so l am lucky. So, it’s an effective heater though running costs in the future could be high, but, not compared to other types of electric heater.
Looks nice in front of my cast iron fire place. However, I have painted the gaudy design on the back plate a metallic gun metal, then burnished over with matt black to darken the incut detail. The log effect has been scratched with a knife to allow more of the red effect to glow through and the metal fan blades twisted level to reduce the revolutions to a more realistic flicker. All in all a good effective 1.2 Kwt heater at the reasonable price of 119.
Easy to connect as it’s a straight wire plug you just plug in and away you go.
Very pleased with product, looks good and very economical to run. Only point I would make is that advert on web site says it has optiflame fire effect which it doesn’t have – it has an electric bulb like previous models of this heater. Would still buy again.
The plastic, gold embellishment looks even worse in real life than in the photos (what are dimplex thinking?) . I have removed mine using a pair of pliers. The two holes that are left I have masked by sticking some black sticky tape on the reverse side.
Otherwise this works well.
The fire was delivered extremely promptly. I would have liked it to have been fitted with two 1-kilowatt bars instead of 600 watt bars as this would provide more powerful heating.
I have had one of these fires in the past and find them very efficient. They throw out a good heat with just one bar on and heat a room quickly. However, I found that the “gold” feature on the back plate was not the colour it had been in the past. It was very bright and not quite “gold” enough in colour for my taste. Sadly, I had to return the fire and look for something similar.
I don’t like the shiny bit on the top and I have stopped the twirly thing from spinning around, its a bit tinny ,but I think its great value for money ,looks good and heats the room with only one bar .I certainly recommend it.
The fake flame electric fire is very useful for quick additional heat with a cosy feel. It’s very useful to have when the central heating is off for the summer months. It brightens up a dull rainy day and I’ve got it in now! The one minor dislike is a fake brass decoration fixed at the top which I managed to remove and looks much better without it!
Warm enough for our open plan living dining room easy to use
Bars if need replacing might be a problem as to finding on line seems a problem
Good fire all round for the price
This fire is quite old-fashioned in style, but it’s been just the ticket for our living-room. The 2 radiant bars give instant warmth, and the light gently flickering under the false logs is sufficient focus in the evenings when the central heating kicks in. It is totally silent, unlike those fires with convection heat.
Bought this in sept 2020, as I had the same model old/previous (for years!) which was just amazing.
The heat generated by the two bars were just out of this world!!!
I still have the old model but only one heat bar works, but still… One bar does the job perfectly.
Fearing it was on its last moment, decided to buy the new model knowing what i should get on terms of results.
Turned out…less than 6 months later, one bar of the new model already gave in!
But before that, i noticed that even with 2 working bars, i wasnt getting the heat ( not warmth…HEAT) I was getting from the old model.
Am glad i could compare two similar products…unfortunately, the old school wins hands down.
Quite disappointed that less than 6 months in, and am left with half the product i bought. 🙁
Still does the job, but it’s not the same.
I guess i was unlucky on this one.
Might just be factory default or just a short life expectancy…
I bought this fire because my gas fire wasn’t working. It is a nice looking fire and l found one bar was warm enough I was really pleased with my purchased and pleased with the price
The warmth is not as great as the one I had before this. My other one was much stronger even on one of the lights and this one is half as strong. I would like to know what the problem is?
OK, firstly thank you for everyone’s reviews really helped me selected a new fire. Just to say – I had a similar electric fire many years ago, but was entice by the modern electric fire and fireplace when moving. The first delivery the fire was noisy but thought it was a fault, so returned and got a replacement; however after time the noise increased and the cool air from the fire when not sat in front of it; was just waste of electric. Anyway the new fire so far looks good, light weight, quiet , easy to install and sits nicely in the fireplace. Yes I would like to have the modern fire with the zero noise level but for now this is a great unit fingers crossed.
When our old radiant fire heater finally stopped working I wondered if I would ever be able to find a product as effective. Well, with this product I have. It gives out a good level of heat, is aesthetically pleasing and is very portable. It looks wonderful in our fireplace.
I was unsure but not much choice for radient electric fires but it’s lovely and warm , not too expensive to run, only needs to run on one bar and silent very happy with purchase
I had one of these fires years ago ,so when I wanted a fire for my sitting room decided to buy this model again it gives off a cheerful glow when just turned on and a lovely heat when bars are on . I find one bar is only needed when the central heating is off. JB
I love this fire, its so warm and soothing and comforting.. However, I couldn’t stand the black colour and chintzy gold embellishment or the ridiculous revolving light..
So I got to painting it a lovely iridescent Bronze and after about 4 coats & some touch-up’s – it looks absolutely lovely and vintage! Also I painted the chintzy thing with a deeper, richer gold and aged it with the bronze in the crevices and added a touch of glitter…
Next to go was revolving silly thing which can be unscrewed and taken off (thanks to a reviewer suggestion! 🙂
(I used Sennelier, Abstract Iridescent bronze 022 paint: high quality but I can’t guarantee its heat-proof but after two years its still excellent..)
I adore this, couldn’t do a winter without it…….. x
bought as like for like replacement for older model{20yrs+} .prompt delivery. The panel decoration is a bright yellow plastic-much more garish than shown on the amazon advert.I replaced the 60W fire bulb for a5W LED bulb-much less irritating but it still has enough heat to make the spinner more slowly.Heats our room quickly and quietly as no fan.
Its appearance is pretty basic and the spinning disc lamp reflection can be distracting at first (I was thinking about removing it but I’ve kind of gotten used to it). The most important consideration though is the heat generated; one bar keeps a large room very warm on cold autumn days.
I had expected the fire effect to have two lamps but it only had one which affected the overall display. Two would have been a lot better. Not a disaster though and the overall design was OK.
Very effective I purchased this because I got sick of buying halogen heaters that kept packing up it does eat up you’re electric it’s 2kw but for the coming winter is ideal and very hot and heats a massive room and also looks the part it’s so hot that running it on just two bars is more than enough and over the last few years the amount I’ve waisted on those blow heaters. And halogen doesn’t seem worth it wished I’d bought this sooner , however I haven’t had it long so don’t know how long it will last I’ll see
We got this to replace our old Berry Magicoal which has given over 40 years trusty service. Sadly the elements for the Berry are now pretty hard to find and quite pricey, you can get much cheaper replacement elements for the Yeominster, although it remains to be seen how long they’ll last. At first sight the Yeominster looks pretty solid + well made, although made in China (aren’t they all…). Like others we were concerned with the flickering light, it comes on as soon as you switch the mains plug on, whether you turn on the heater elements or not. The flicker is caused by a rotating disk of thin aluminium that spins around at speed and is certainly annoying, whatever idiot dreamt that one up goodness alone knows. But it’s easy to fix, just take off the plastic logs (held on with 2 screws) and you can slide the disk out, bye-bye flicker. We discovered too that if you remove the back you can lever off the golden curvy plastic thing that looks like a garish Xmas decoration, and also the flicker disk holder (a small aluminium frame attached to the back of the fire). You’re left with a few small holes in the back but we think this aesthetically preferable to the garish nonsense supplied. We also changed the flicker bulb (a normal-sized 60W red light bulb!!) for a 25W red one. Now you just see a quiet red glow behind the logs – ahhhh, now we can relax… The elements themselves can each be put on separately or both at the same time and like all radiant heaters throw out the heat nicely. All in all a bit pricey but hoping it’ll gives years of good service.
The fire arrived on time-in two days. The packaging was strong and intact. The fire was very easy to use and the dimensions were exactly as described. The fire is sturdy but not too heavy and should last for many years. The price paid for the fire was excellent. The only slightly worrying feature was the presence of a small shard of glass in the packaging.
Vsry pleased so far!! Just hope it lasts a god long time!!! It has replaced an old Belling which we had for 46years!! I painted the very brassy detail on the back plate, black which I much prefer. Also I removed the tin rotating thingamyjig which creates the flickering effect by reaching in behind the “logs” amd gently pulling it out. Much better!!
Old dad loves it. Traditional style leccy fire. Arrived very quickly- appreciated in January cold snap.Warms up very quickly, simple controls, nice glow. Bit bigger than expected- should have read the dimensions more carefully- but not a problem. One star deducted for the garish gold decoration, would be nicer if more antiqued effect.
The flame effect plate is rather temperamental, other than that it is good value and makes the fireplace much more attractive for my 99 year sister who has to spend most of her time looking towards the fireplace or sleeping. Well worth buying.
I have had one of these for over 25 years with absolutely no problems other than once replacing the bulb! As one of the bars has given up the ghost and the heat output is perhaps not quite what it was I have decided to replace the fire. And – as far as I can remember – the price is not that different! I call this wonderful value – particularly as there isn’t anything else remotely similar on the market. Well done Dimplex!
As a heater…perfect….First thing I did was to cut the entire tacky back off…throw away the log insert which reveals a well…remove the bulb..place a bit of tin over the hole left by the bulb and fill the well with authentic looking fake coals….O.K….you’ve lost the light but the quality and appearance looks much better,(to me)…When you remove the logs moulding there is some bits of bright metal exposed either end…I just sprayed any bright metal showing with a matt black aerosol….
Just like the one I had in the 90s. None of that thermostat nonsense where it turns itself on and off to be energy efficient. This does its job, felt an immediate difference upon installing it. But one problem, bit keeps popping light bulbs after a while. The bars are fine though.
Okay, it’s a tad old fashioned but after a nightmare fortnight with a nice modern looking but horrendous new fan heater posing as a fire, it felt like the best purchase I have ever made in my life.
The fan heater had left my skin cold to the touch and me feeling cold to the bone, noisily blowing cold air on to me in an extremely annoying fashion (unless standing right in front, right in the centre, within 2 foot distance). I find fan heaters only serve to make the air warm and unpleasantly dry and thick to breath. The fan heater left my throat parched, cracked and my chest sore. The fan heater also only provided expensive heat that disappeared within two minutes of switching it off and if I opened the door, within seconds it was like it had not been on at all day.
The Yeominster fire, on the other hand, warmed me and I could breath comfortably once more.
The level of heat this two bar electric radiant fire kicks out even on one bar is astounding, my old radiant bar electric fire was never this effective despite being a (now defunct) Dimplex model also. The two radiant bars the Yeominster possesses each have their independent switches, so no faffing around with thermostats, in fact it does not have a thermostat at all, which I personally prefer as my old radiant bar fires all broke down when the thermostat went, leaving me with only one bar in the depths of winter.
The log effect part and gold motif (this is bolted on and I think it may be possible to remove it and paint it with a bit of hammerite or similar to change the colour although I haven’t tried it) are a bit plasticky but are ok. There is a red fireglow bulb that provides a flickering effect but I could take that or leave it be honest, not my favourite feature and you cannot switch it off unless you turn the whole thing off at the plug. The black metalwork is a nice matt slightly textured finish and seems very durable. I’ve found dusting this fire with a paint brush makes it easy to clean. The reflector behind the bars is very shiny and well positioned and is very effective at throwing the heat forward. It’s compact without being too small.
I also found the Yeominster uses fewer units per day of electricity to keep my living room warm in comparison with the the fan heater fire which was practically gobbling units. I would caution anyone with children to get a fire guard with this as small fingers could get between the protective wire guard already on it but that’s true for all good fires. The black metal part does get quite warm around the sides but the log effect area and decorative back panel stays cool and there is virtually no heat that leaks below nor behind the unit.
Overall, I found this product well worth the money. I am very happy with it.
No complaints. Very economical compared with some of my other heaters. Heats the room up so well, I often turn it off.
The only slight problem is the Dimplex web site, I wanted to purchase a Spare Heating Element and could not find my way around their Site. Had to phone their Helpline and the operater gave me instructions. The first spare heating element to arrive was broken in the post ( the element has glass in it ). Phoned their helpline again and explained, the feller was very helpful, and I think it was the next day a replacement element arrived ok, at no extra cost.
We bought this because our old gas fire broke and we can’t get a satisfactory replacement. We tried a few cheaper electric fires but they were made in the far east and were simply rubbish. They didn’t give out much heat and the elements kept failing. Then we saw this fire and sent for it. The first one we ordered never arrived so when we notified the vendors they immediately sent a replacement by courier at their own expense which arrived the next day! How’s that for customer service?
This fire gives out great heat and looks superb.
I wanted a tried and tested straight forward electric fire for my elderly father. Something he could use easily that would be reliable. The delivery was quick and efficient and the fire arrived earlier than anticipated. My father is delight ed with the performance of the fire and our only criticism is the slightly “blingy” gold decoration on the back piece but it doesn’t affect the efficiency of the fire. By today’s standards its a bit old fashioned but then so is my Pa, now in his mid eighties and he is toastie and warm so boxes all ticked Bravo.
I’ve been looking for ages for an electric fire to use when I don’t light my open log fire, and it was proving difficult. This fire is a neat design, easily removed when not in use, but gives a good 1 or 2 kilowatts of radiant heat (much more effective than the fancier fires with fan heaters) and heats our large sitting room when the central heating goes off. It may not be the most stylish model on the market but if you want something easy, portable and reasonably priced, this fire is worth buying.
I bought this electric heater for my father who wanted a fire to provide background heat in the spring and autumn before he fully turned on the electric heating. It provides exactly that, and he also says that he likes the slight flicker to the ‘coals’ on the top. Personally I would prefer that the gold effect decoration be removed as it cheapens the appearance – the same colour as the surround would do it for me.
Overall it fitted exactly the space my father wanted it to fit, he likes it, it does the job.
