It made a nice gift, looks great on the stove and lets you know when the wood box is headed up. It really doesn’t move any air, especially compared to the electric fan that’s already in use. But if you had a small space or no electric, I bet it’s better than nothing. Either way, it really is super fun and cute.
It doesn’t blow you away but it does move the heat where you want it. 4 stars for noise cause after a month you can hear something in there wanting oil or something.
Well made and very quite. We have a large open plan room. Distributes the heat very well. People who walk in think the heating is on.
This fan works great on the fire place when the power goes out of our built in fireplace fan. It blows the heat into the room really nice, and never having to worry abt turning any on off switch is perfect. It’s very quiet too. Both are nghbrs have the same fan.
Ok. So the first fan that was delivered was broken. Easy replacement and my new fan arrived. Granted the temp picked up outside to 60 so I can’t say how the fairs in the deep freeze. But what I can say is I’ve got the doors and windows open. This thing rocks. Doesn’t make a sound and moves the heat where you want it. I’m actually looking forward to single digit temps with this fan! Wish I found it 3 months ago!
The price on this fan really was tough to pay, but it is really well built, and you pay for quality. It is silent, moves air well, and stops when the blades are interrupted. We have a cheaper smaller one that works pretty well, but if you can afford it, it’s worth the extra money.
I have used these for 15 years. I heat 1644 square feet with only one other small overhead fan .You simply cannot lose. Caframo is, i believe probably the best product of its kind available
This makes a huge difference in heat distribution in the house. Very quiet. Highly recommend.
I have 3 Ecofans and 1 smaller “VODA 4-Blade Heat Powered Stove Fan” (from Amazon) on top of my woodstove. ALL ARE QUIET. BIG woodstove. Its difficult to accurately tell which one blows more heat because they sit in different locations, they all have different size fan blades and 1 of the Ecofans i rebuilt. I used a 1/4″ piece of shredded paper 10″ long and held it in front of each of the 4 fans at the same time when the stove was really hot and I really think that the VODA blew the paper strip with more power. If i were on a budget I would get the Voda. If I were a billionaire I would buy BOTH the VODA and the Ecofan Airmax and set them side by side and ask friends to come over and tell me what they thought. I hope this helps.
Contente de l’achat, mais on peux avoir pour le mme produit dans nos quincaillerie au mme prix
Fonctionne trs bien !
So great I bought a 2nd. The newest was turning at 1/2 the RPM of the original… called customer service and it was an A+ experience. They sent me a new motor no questions asked.
We heat primarily with a wood stove, which does have a fan built in. It works, but sounds like a lawn mower. These things are virtually silent, and work when the power is out… and move a surprising amount of air. In a 40′ x 17′ room with 13′ ceilings, these things make a big difference. It’s also nice that you can move them around on top of the stove to spread heat where you need it.
Very well made and not a gimmick- they really work.
Noiseless and fun to watch! Definitely helps with heat distribution.
I bent the fan blades slightly for more air distribution. Its a fan with no electricity needed! Its amazing!
Robusto le lame fanno girare bene il caldo in tutta la stanza
This doesn’t move air like the electric blower on the stove. But it is effective and handy when the power is out. Moves enough air to ruffle the hair on my arm at about 2 feet. But it circulates well enough to get the heat throughout a 2000 sq foot home in about 2 hours. Very pleased. And it is absolutely silent.
If you have a blower motor on your wood stove and the power goes out this fan works great which is why I purchased it, but if you want to just save on your electric bill this will do the job. Either way a great product.
When it gets hot, the fan blades spin.
It isnt a industrial-grade fan that moves 150,000cfm… but if I wanted one of those, I would have bought it.
I wanted a silent, heat powered fan to place on top of my stove. This product performs exactly as I thought it would, and I cant ask for more than that.
I had a previous fan made by this company and it lasted twenty years……can’t complain!!! So ordered this as its replacement and it is even quieter. Many warnings about not letting it sit on anything above 625, so put a tile on top of the woodstove and that measured 425, so knew it was safe. You do nothing..it comes on and does its thing and from another room I can look and see how fast the blades are turning whether the fire needs another log or if there’s enough in there to feed it for awhile.
I feel compelled to write a review; something I have never done before. I previously had an ecofan that served me extremely well for about 10 years. I ordered this new ecofan in the Fall and expected the same excellent service. However right out of the box something was wrong, it worked sporadically and spun very slowly. This is not a luxury item in our household since we heat with wood and the fan helps to evenly distribute the heat around the house. Secondarily it is useful in indicating when it is time to add more wood to the fire. After leaving for several months, upon returning I definitely realized that this product was defective. Unfortunately it was about 7 months from the time of purchase. Nevertheless I called the company and they were extremely helpful and willing to make it right. It turned out that this product was shipped from England and had a 4 year old manufacturing date. They sent me a new motor which took only about 5 minutes to install and the fan works perfectly. Great company, great product!
The fan works better than the last two we tried. At least you can feel the air move in front of it. It sure helps keep the warm air moving to warm the other side of the room and help save on wood.
The motor died after about 15 months. EcoFan has the replacement motor on backorder with no idea when they would have them in stock. So, I brought this: Fireplace Fan Accessories Motor and Power Generation sheet/4-Blade Heat Powered Stove Fan for Wood / Log Burner from Amazon. It’s the same motor and works great. The thermomagnetic plate MUST be installed with the black wire on the LEFT side of the frame while looking at it from the back. This allows the blade to turn counter clockwise as the original motor turns and the blade is designed to work. (so don’t follow the directions on the package)
This little fan does big work. I had heard great things about this fan and it does not disappoint. I got it for my wood stove as that is our primary heat source. The wood stove has a built-in fan, but if/when the electricity goes out that obviously won’t work. I am surprised at how light it is. It is quiet and unlike the built-in fan I can direct the air in any direction. It works so well that I have been turning off the built-in fan because of how loud it is. It exceeded my expectations and was delivered on time and in perfect condition. Would buy again.
Amazingly sends the heat from front of the house to the back. Previously, we had used a fan, sometimes two, to move the heat from our woodburner to the hall, bathrooms, and bedrooms but they would still come up short until we bought this fan. This fan keeps the hallway 78 to 80 degrees, which we like a really warm house. Our central heat never has to kick on.
Very expensive- but I wanted a reliable wood stove fan for power outages. Making matters worse, I accidentally bought two. With that said, I’m glad I have both of them. They work quite well as long as you don’t expect the equal air movement of an electric fan. And yes, they are VERY quiet. Now it’s just a matter of how many years will they last.
We love this thing! Runs whisper quiet and distributes the heat very well. Its definitely been an adjustment to keep the stove under the proper temp, but we’re getting the hang of it. I can’t believe we waited this long to get it. We have a loft over our kitchen and dining room and this fan has dramatically improved the temp of all the spaces (warmer downstairs and cooler upstairs)
I can feel a warm breeze coming off the fan at 3 or 4 feet away, but it doesn’t move very fast, which I like. Sturdy, well constructed and works as advertised. I highly recommend it for those who heat with wood.
Pros: quiet, maintenance free, attractive and high quality.
Cons: expensive, doesn’t really push much air.
Buy it if you don’t mind spending that much on what amounts to a very nice decoration for your stove. I am pleased, but if I needed to actually circulate a lot of warm air I would use an electric fan.
Someone at work told me about itbeen without such device for 3 yearswhat a difference it makes. Thinking of another so I can angle it different direction.
Effectively moves hot air from local area of stove to next room. This latest generation is taller with large diameter 2 blade fan which should keep the fins up in cooler air. It moves even more air than the last generation 3 blade model but takes longer to start due to more massive base and pillar. Hope the motor bearings (longer but still easily replaceable motor with quick disconnect) lasts longer than the year I am used to for my application which is almost continuous use in the winter. Much more expensive than other fans but well worth it for effectiveness on regular use and for ability to replace readily available and inexpensive motor which will always be needed at some point.
Placed the Ecofan on the woodstove in my off grid cabin to help distribute the heat from the fire.
The fan operated as expected. You can’t really feel the air moving in front of the fan, but it will blow out the flame of a candle from 2 feet way, so it’s moving air. When spinning on a black stove with black stove pipe, it tends to disappear so be cautious when leaning over the stove to load wood or it will “bite” you…Overall a great product and high quality. Not sure how it compares to copy cat fans at half the price?
What I LOVE about this product is that it is quiet, it costs NOTHING to run it; and the BEST REASON of all? It keeps us soooooooo WARM on those nights where it gets into the ‘teens and low 20’s. It is SO much WARMER than our propane heat alone, in fact I cannot even compare the difference in warmth. When you have a wood stove that uses THIS WONDERFUL ECOFAN, the heat feels just like it is going right to your bones. The cost of this ECOFAN is unbelievably AFFORDABLE for most people. I just want to tell the developers of this MAGNIFICANT FAN that I, for one, am so grateful to you for being able to come up with a product that truly WORKS and there are NO hidden agendas.
Thank you once again for making a product that truly helps people stay warmer in extremely cold conditions.
With Sincere thanks,

175 CFM? That’s 3 CFM a second. I doubt it. And even if true, that really ain’t much in a room with many thousands of cubic feet. So this isn’t a big air mover, even running at full speed. A small electric fan will put out much more airflow. Convection moves more air than this little whirligig. I give it 5 stars because it is such a great piece of kinetic art that makes me smile every time I see it. Hugely clever design and completely silent in operation. The quality of construction and workmanship is of flawless aerospace level (complex machined aluminum extrusions: anodized black). I have it on top of my $5000 Liberty wood-burner, which already heated my whole house sometimes to excess. Bottom line…the fan is not a big game changer for increased heat distribution as claimed, but it is the slickest addition to the great room in ages. Think of it as a Lava Lamp on steroids. Quite the conversation piece, and I have most everyone baffled in BS on how it works!!
Somewhat dubious but I needed something to move the air around our wood stove. It is our primary source of heat for the whole house. The far end of the house just never seems to get warm. Purchased this, set it on the wood stove and built a fire. A few minutes later the fan started to slowly spin on top of the steel radiating surface. The instructions say that will start at around 145 F. A minute or so later the fan was spinning at full speed and I could feel a feel soft breeze on my face. Half an hour later the heat was all the way to the other end of the house. Mission accomplished.
A short note: I start the fire and leave the door open a crack to allow for plenty of air into the firebox which accelerates the growth of the flames on all the wood. Once the fan starts to move it is like a signal that I can close the door all the way. Who knew.
Wow! I didn’t expect it to be as good as it is. Grew up my whole life (39 years) w a woodstove. Best bang for buck ever! I walked in after it going for only 3 min from opposite of house and could smell it. The oil and newness burning off. This is around a corner in my 110 year old farm house, at the back door where it is always cold and drafty. The heat and air made it there quick! Brought my room temp up much quicker and distributed than normal! No brainer. I don’t leave reviews but felt it was necessary to pass this knowledge on to other folks. The black blade is great. Stealth look. Also no noise! Funny to open the stove door and watch it change speeds! Buy it! Life is too short to not have one for a woodstove!
The Fan works well and as many have said, it is very quiet. You can not hear it running. I like the automatic on/off capability of the fan based on the stove temp with no electricity required.
There are a couple of points that I wanted to comment on for your awareness when considering to purchase.
There is no protective shield around the blades, so beware when running!
The directions point out that the fan should not be positioned in the middle or in front of the stove pipe if it exits out the top of the stove.
The fan should be positioned off to the side of the stove pipe such that the fan can draw in cooler air over the Peltier Module, otherwise the
fan may not work properly. So, you have to find the “sweet spot” on the stove where the base is getting hot enough to get the fan up to speed, yet it can still pull in cooler air to keep the heat sink & top of the Peltier module cool enough to maintain a temp delta for maximum fan speed. Something to think about!
Also, it may be obvious, but keep in mind that the fan speed is dependent on stove temp and it is quiet because the fan speed can only ramp up to a maximum of 175 CFM of air flow. So, if you are using an electric fan now, don’t think that this is going to match the air flow of the electric fan that will be much noisier and running at much higher CFM’s.
Consequently, if the wood stove fire is being started in a cold setting, it is going to take a while for the fan to start working and get up to speed.
Fan operation depends on how fast the area on the stove where the fan is setting gets up to temp.
When the fan gets up to speed the air flow you feel in front of the stove is slight and is not going to move enough air to bring the area up to temp as quickly as an electric fan would.
So, don’t think it is going to match the air flow and heat transfer of an electric fan for quick heating results, which I’m sure is not the intent of the Mfg’r. The obvious use is where electricity is not available, but some folks who have electricity may be interested in it simply because it does not require electricity.
In summary, once the wood stove and the living area is up to temp, then that is where the fan is at it’s best in that it is quiet and maintains a subtle air flow across the stove. This helps to keep the air flow circulating in the area and the fan will speed up or down based on the stove temp.
If this is what you are looking for, then the fan works pretty good and is worth getting.
Hope this helps…
There aren’t enough positive adjectives to describe this fan and the company that manufactures it. The fan is quiet, highly effective and requires little attention beyond an occasional cleaning with a cloth and Q-tip dampened with warm water. We heat our tri-level home exclusively with wood heat. The woodstove is located on the lowest level and this fan sends enough heat up to the middle level to keep it very comfortably warm as well. If the temperatures are in the high 40’s and low 50’s outside it will even warm up the upper level too! Since the upper level is where our bedrooms are located, we prefer to keep this level cooler for comfortable sleeping, so we simply close the door to keep the heat out. We had occasion to work with the company that produces these little marvels regarding another fan we had purchased several years ago and they bent over backwards to help resolve our problem. They firmly stand behind their quality product. Even though these fans may appear to be quite pricey; they truly are worth every penny spent in return for the comfort they provide while not using expensive electricity nor adding to our ever increasing noise pollution problems!
Quality built and packaged this nice looking accessory will not move volumes of air but it runs for nothing and looks nice doing it. I have a large quality wood burner so overheating is not an issue. Using the latest formula of extruded Blazers (get them from Costco or Home Depot) and you won’t get ripped as locals are charging more. They sell by the pallet at highly discounted prices. The wood back to the fan. This fan should be considered by anybody that has the money and anything but the smallest of wood burners as heat is an issue. The one thing that kept that fifth star from popping is the motor is electric and they are by design, not very heat friendly. The energy source is a thermocouple which works off the difference in the heat on the bottom of the unit and the cooler air in the room. The difference makes the juice that powers the motor. I wish there was a all around better way to accomplish this then an electric motor but in that size and price it’s quite cutting edge none the less. We’ll see about longevity as their warranty is 1 year and they’ll replace it as long as you don’t send one to them that’s fryed from overheating. Gets the hot air away from the wall in a noiseless fashion. DO NOT put directly in front of the flue as that will fry it and it’s in the manual. Off to the side is great. I pointed mine at the flue so cool air was getting pulled into the fan and blown off the sides as my flue go out the top. If you use wood get the thermometer amazon offers in the package. I’ve had one of those for 15 years and all you do is drill the proper size hole through the flue 2′ above the top of the stove where it comes out. It slides in and a magnet holds it in there. That way you can monitor flue temps. Remember, this does not mean the surface is that hot but if you maxing out near a 1000f for any length of time you’ll probably have issues. I run around 650-700f so that’s probably 550 on the top as I have a large stove with thick walls. There manual talks about oven temps but flue temps prevent roof fires and you extrapolate the top temps by duration.
RE: Reviews stating would not start by itself. Mu flue temps rise fast as I like to get in the clean burn above 500f quick as it keeps the smoke down. Nobody likes a neighbor with a slow burning smoldering mess as that’s how you end up with ashes on your car and a lot of creosote buildup. When the top of the stove was to hot to touch it started up. They say 150f and I think that’s about right so wait an hour until the stove exterior is toasty and if it fails it’s a legit complaint.
I liked the fan. It moved heat away from the stove out into my living room and it was fun to look at, but after a week or so it slowed noticeably and it’s no fun to have spent over a hundred bucks and then have to wonder what ails it. I thought I may have damaged it because my stove creeped up to 700 F once or twice and the fan probably sat there for ten or fifteen minutes before I caught it. I’m giving the fan 4 stars when it works because you can’t just let it sit there and forget it. You have to babysit the thing. On the other hand, I don’t often let my stove get that hot anyway.
Now comes the strange part. The fan slowed to the point that it wouldn’t run below 450 and at 650 it just puttered, maybe 100 rpm, not the 8 or 900 it put out when I got it. I searched for answers and found that someone had rebuilt his by taking it apart and putting new cpu paste on the electrical generating plate with great success. I did the same but without the results. Fan still worked, but not below 450.
I took it off the stove and let it sit for a few days and put it back on. Still no change until today, two days later. Suddenly it’s working like new. Could be that the paste (arctic silver 5) needed to find some kind of equilibrium. If anyone thinks they have an answer I’d like to hear it. Ecofan provides no help on their website except they promise to send you something if your fan is slowing down and it’s still under warranty. I filled out their info and the site said some thing would come but it hasn’t. That was over a week ago. If it’s a new motor I don’t believe I need it. I should take off another star for poor support (these things aren’t cheap) but I’m happy it’s working again. Go figure.
Update: 1/12
By now the unit has slowed again, or is erratic, and never starts at 150 F the way it should. the motor from Caframo arrived today (shipped from Canada) I did not expect any improvement because of all the posts I have seen that say changing the motor doesn’t help, but I put it in anyway and it runs fine, so the motor was the problem all along. I’m grateful for that because replacement thermal units cost $30 plus on EBAY.
I have 2 stove fans on my cast iron stove. One is this one and the other is a sterling fan.
I’ve had my Caframo fan for 2 winters now but supplemented it with the sterling fan this past winter.
This one starts moving air about 100 degrees sooner than the sterling engine can and it doesn’t need my assistance to start turning over. It does have an upper temperature limit though where the sterling fan does not (not a temp that a wood burning stove can reach). My two biggest complaints with this fan are probably the sterling’s greatest strengths so they’re amplified a bit. This fan does not have a low enough center of gravity. I find it tips over remarkably easily. This wouldn’t be a problem if the fan blade were made of a more robust material. I find I can approximate the shape of the blade fairly easily by bending it back with my fingers. It can become pretty bent just from tipping over, not from falling off of somthing. The sterling is rock solid in both respects.
In operation the fan moves enough air over a few hours to make a huge difference in the avg room temperature. It doesn’t have enough velocity to throw air into adjacent rooms though. The room that it’s in (20×15) stays very even though. The addition of the sterling fan helped tremendously and can through air through the doorway of the adjacent rooms and stir it up. Together the two fans enable the stove to fairly evenly heat 3 rooms totalling nearly 900 sq ft all while using no electricity. The bottom line is they’re both phenomenal at what they do. I have recommended this fan to many friends and would buy it again.
This is the third Caframo fan I have ordered. The first went in my house, pleased with that. Second one for my mom and step dad for christmas last year, very pleased with that. Different houses with different layouts seem to affect performance… but isn’t that the case with all fans. Love that it doesn’t create a cold draft when the stove burns down, because it slows down. Also, it’s silent! You can watch TV, talk, or anything without having to listen to a fan screaming! That in itself is so nice! My step dad is happy, it doesn’t bother him and his football games anymore! This purchase went to my grandma’s house. She 89, has an old house and has never had a fan on her stove. She says she feels heat down the hall that she doesn’t remember feeling before! I’m glad to hear that she too is having good results from this product. It’s also a nice subject of conversation at social gatherings, everyone is awed by it. I’m thinking about getting a second one for my stove… have to borrow mom’s for a day to see if there is a difference.
This is our third Caframo fan in the past 10 years. It does a good job moving the air off of your woodstove top, especially if yours is recessed at all into the fireplace, as is our situation. The fan is silent and what is an unintended consequence of the design is that you can tell how hot your stove is by noting the relative speed of the fan: when it’s running slow, your stove is too cool and you are probably creosoting your flue/liner/chimney. Science-geek husbands are especially enamored with the fan’s Peltier Effect-drive (and the silently spinning blades mesmerize them so that you can concentrate on your needlepoint or magazine or favorite show). Now about that “third” fan comment in the opening line: the devices seem sensitive to dust buildup, so make sure that you gently vacuum the “equipment area” where the thermoelectric drive is located. Or maybe try compressed air, but I haven’t tried it so don’t sue me. We had two that over time just slowed down and eventually stopped spinning. Maybe during the third season. I threw them out because they were beyond warranty, but recently found out that Caframo will refurbish used units … so we decided to buy another one. So -1 star for reliability, not -2 because they refurb. Also note that they are fragile (i.e., drop it and you’ll need a replacement blade set); the blades need to be very light to get max energy from the thermoelectric drive. But since your husband is not supposed to play with hot objects, it should not be an issue.
I was a little optomistic when buying this, alot of money for an unknown return. After using it for 3 months I bought 2 of the 2 blade models for my brother for Christmas. I have had wood stoves for 20 years and always had an electic fan or blower to help move the air over the stoves and optimize their performance. It always bothered me to have a fan running full time even when the stoves temperature got lower, not to mention the noise a fan caused.
Last year we upgraded our woodstove and decided to try out the Ecofan. I love it. It moves just enough air to increase the stoves performance without creating a drafty feeling in the room. The unit is completely silent, which is creat since it is only a few feet from our entertainment center (no more turning the fan off to watch a movie/TV)
When the stove cools down the fan slows to match the performance of the heat output. No energy cost to operate, what more could you want (I figure in 5-7 years it might even pay for itself, but thats not the point of buying it!)
Like i said, just bought 2 smaller units for my brothers and they both love them!
