I bought this and the inks. I had an Epson expression photo xp-790 before this one and is very much the same. Some operations are a bit different but on the whole similar. Also, I had a lot of compatible ink cartridges for my Epson expression photo xp-790 left over. The new printer Epson expression photo xp-970 uses the same ink’s (I hope as I haven’t tried them as yet, using the elephant inks that came with printer).
I’ve bought my compatible inks from King of flash which is also on amazon. Have had no leaky ones at all.
Yes so so far good machine.
Bought it to replace my old Epson 2000. The print quality is good but the rest is not so good. It is remarkably noisy clinking and clanking as it starts up, I keep expecting it to fall apart. It prints very quickly in comparison to my old one and both text and photos are of good quality. But I dislike the internal cassette method of holding the paper. It’s hard to tell when paper is running out and doesn’t hold as much as the old method of feeding the paper from the external source. The cassette for photo paper is a real pain. If the cassette isn’t full enough and the paper is a small size it often fails to pick up the paper and gives a “paper out ” message.
The ink is probably the most irritating thing about the printer. Like most companies Epson have found the perfect way of gouging money out of customers. Even the extra large cartridges don’t last very long and I don’t do a lot of printing and that mostly using black ink.
I haven’t used the scanner much but it seems to work fine, no real issues with it at all.
The wireless connection works well although I haven’t tried it though my phone or outside the house. The on screen window closes itself very quickly so you can easily miss that it is running out of ink.
It seems to be able to do a lot of things that I don’t want or need with a range of photo printing techniques and options for cards and other stuff.
As long as it works it’s fine for what I need but I wonder how long it will last for. Not sure I will recommend it with confidence
Bought to replace my outdated A3 photo printer. I just love the fact that you only need a power cable as everything is connected via Wi-Fi. The seamless connection touch screen set up is easy as is the options to print from anywhere using the app and from the printers Wi-Fi connection is fantastic. The print quantity is brilliant as is the two sided print capability. It’s a bit noisy but it does tell you in the user guide that it will be. I’m very happy with it overall.
I think this is the best printer I’ve ever owned, but yesterday I was tempted to chuck it in the bin and buy another one. Plus points: can print on A3 paper, which I really did need, and you manually feed the A3 sheet at the back when you want to print on A3. Colours are wonderful, good resolution, very nice prints. Can print wirelessly and via a wired (Ethernet) cable (if you use that method, wireless is disabled) and via a USB cable. And yesterday it all stopped working. The printer was forever “offline” or “busy” and I couldn’t get it to print anything at all. I tried everything I could think of, for hours. Then I went to the Epson site and used the support chat option. I was sceptical that they could help, and assumed they would agree with me that the printer needed to be taken to a repair shop. But we found the problem. I had recently installed a Mesh network in my house and it couldn’t connect to that. Seemingly my Mesh network was broadcasting both a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz signal, and this printer gets confused by the conflicting signals. Whether you call that a design flaw, I don’t know. While it was in its state of confusion it was incapable of printing via wired ethernet or via USB. The only solution was (a) switch off the Mesh system (b) connect to the router itself and finally (c) configure it to use a homeplug/powerline ethernet connection. Now the printer works perfectly and my Mesh is on again but the printer no longer uses the wireless connection. On that basis and assuming it still works after a decent interval, I’m happy to give it an overall 5 star rating. As for the touch screen, my fingers are evidently too big for those tiny icons. It’s me who has the design flaw.
Easy enough to set up, It’s take a while to set up, can be a little slow. Once done, it works well. You’ll need some space around it, as the A3 paper needs some room when you insert it. That can be a little fiddly, but you soon get into it. Printing is great with good cleaner colourful images is sharp. Great quality. My only grape is the price for inks, they’re far too expensive, a real rip-off. Especially as they are not colour-fast two to three years and the image will yellow, if you hang the image by a window. “Ultraviolet” you can buy a spray to slow down its effects. It’s about time something was done about consumable and the ridiculous price they charge. One third of the price of the printer, it should be made a crime.
When my HP Photosmart started giving up the ghost, I thought this would be the best replacement — Epson had always been the best for pictorial reproduction, right? Not any longer, I think — and others have confirmed. The duplex printing, which is the other reason I went for this model, doesn’t work. Unless you over-expose at printing stage almost all photos, they come out darker than you’d expect on plain paper, and less clear — HP and Canon seem to be much better these days. Otherwise, very neat, compact, clear screen & instructions, easy to set up, and good for general use. I shall now get my old faithful HP cleaned and re-set, and go back to that!
Very easy to setup, nice sensitive touch screen and fantastic looking prints. Not too loud and clunky.
Don’t forget that when you have a printer like the XP 970 or equivalent, you essentially have a higher end consumer grade printer which is a step before more professional A3+ printers so the running costs are going to be more than your average home printer due to the ability of having high quality prints come out of it.
This isn’t a printer for your invoices or homework.
I like to be able to print my own photos and get a decent quality. I debated for a long time which one I wanted as the last Epson I had kept splodging ink on the paper.
I decided to go for this one and stick with Epson as it had decent reviews and has the option to print A3 although I have yet to try that.
I have not been at all disappointed with the quality of print, I tend to print the photos from the rear and as the printer isn’t beside me it can be a pain as it likes to only have 1 sheet in at a time….I’m not sure if that is how it’s meant to be or if mine is set wrong somewhere, whatever I can live with that for the print quality I am now getting.
Have purchased Epson photo exression printers for some years due to print quality.
660,960 and this 970 model. I have to say disappointed that 960 only lasted for three years( as I am home
user)hopefully this model will last longer. This could be because I use compatible inks…whobody knows!
I found using disc supplied….much better than installing online.
Bought this specifically as a photo printer, and the results are extremely good. It’s not a ‘professional’ printer but it’s a great printer for the price. Also does A3 size prints, which again, for the price is an excellent feature. (Haven’t tried the scan/copy function yet but assume it’s okay. ) Only slightly annoying thing was I couldn’t get a direct connection with my desktop using the printer display panel, (I tried several times) so had to connect via my router – which is fine but wouldn’t be my first choice. Otherwise very happy with the printer.
compact for an A3 printer. easy to set up using the touch screen menu, its a bit like using an app on your phone.
comes with a spare maintenance filter, one is pre installed. just pop in the 6 cartridges and power it on. connection to wife is simple enough, you dont need to run the installation software on a pc.
i downloaded the epson iprint app and ot connected no problem at all.
3 trays at the front of the printer, i loaded 6×4 photo paper into the top tray ( glossy side facing down) and a4 paper in the middle tray.
it also has a lower tray for printing onto cd/dvd discs.
at the back of the printer there is a manual feed slot should you wish to load A3 paper aswell as thicker paper.
im happy with the performance of this machine in the first few days of having it.
photo print quality is excellent even at a3 size.
dont need a pc or mac, can print via smatphone or tablet via the epson iprint app which has a full selection menu.
This printer has a lot of connectivity and produces good photo quality prints. We don’t print very often and the heads need cleaning a few times before the first use in a while, which uses up a lot of ink. This is a common problem with Epson ink-jets (having had three over many years) but once cleared, the prints are quick and good quality – just make sure you set up the settings correctly, remembering the printer has two trays and photo paper goes in the rear feeder, which you need to set up as a printer settings preset.
The printer itself is very good value and the inks are on the high side of reasonable. The downside is that it can use a lot of ink, so the consumables costs can mount up, particularly if you lose a lot of ink to the nozzle cleaning process.
This Printer is for the novice person that like to take there own photos and print them out the print quality is good if your doing prints for your family and friends. If you are a Pro taken photo to sell then you would be better with a Cannon 100 or better the more colors you have on the printer the better the photos are
The Epson XP-970 has 6 colors witch are good for home use if your job is a Pro at taking photos for Weddings you have to buy Printers with 8 to 12 Colors on the printer the more colors the better the picture
As for the Epson XP-970 makes great photos up to A3 but only has 6 colors fine for home and day to day use if your a pro making money from your print then a Cannon 1000 or a better Epson you will need to buy every one that just need a photo printer then the Epson XP-970 is a great choice.
Printer works well and the pictures are beautiful but it was extremely difficult to set up both physically and in terms of software and comes completely devoid of instructions. The set up disk is completely useless and it is far form intuitive.
I managed to set it up via a lot of searching through the internet, finally finding the right Epson help pages but it was a considerable struggle, which needed a modicum of IT expertise
This is a six colour photo printer that can use paper up to size A3. It creates impressive photo prints on photo paper and can also be used for general printing. The main paper tray takes A4 paper. There is a smaller front tray that takes 100 x 150mm photo paper. Printing on A3 paper is on demand ie the printer prompts for a single sheet of A3 to be loaded into the rear paper tray. Epson recommends setting up the printer using a smart phone but unfortunately this sequence did not complete successfully but was easily accomplished from the printer itself.
The unit has the capability to scan single sheets up to size A4. The printer is driven from the touch screen which is easy to use. One of the major benefits of this printer is its relatively compact size and multiplicity of functions. I have used photo paper from a variety of manufacturers and all have performed very well. Be aware of the cost of Epson ink for this printer which is consumed quite rapidly when printing photographs. For that reason I recommend this printer for low volume photo printing – say 10-40 A4 per month which equates to 5- 20 A3 per month.
I have now owned this printer for just over a month and it has performed flawlessly. It’s so convenient to run proofs of photographs in 4 x 6 in of A4 size before deciding what to print in A3. During the first month I have replaced both the Light Magenta and Light Cyan ink cartridges and it is only now that the other four setup cartridges are about to require replacement. The LCD touch screen interface is excellent providing useful help prompts when required and making it easy to operate the printer.
The printer is quite big. Definitely check the dimensions in case it is too big for your liking. The prints are really good quality. I bought it with the ink included.
If you’re a beginner with photography I would recommend as it’s good value, affordable. I used the Canon photo paper plus glossy II 10 x 15cm and it worked really well. Make sure to put the glossy paper upside down on the area which has the company logo on, not the glossy top.
The printer is compact (small for a A3) compared to my Epson Photo1500W. But alas the 1500 was showing signs of aging. A3 printing is via manual single sheet rear feed, acceptable but not brilliant, it will do multi sheet and poster printing but because it doesn’t do borderless multi printing it’s more time consuming doing large poster. It is a six(6) colour printer the reproduction is good, for the average user is acceptable. Speed is on par with the 1500W. Good points, Compact, seems well built, Price, Good value at the price I paid. Easy to set up. Bad points, Single sheet A3 rear feed.
Be careful with this purchase! Amazon claim that the Squirrel 378 pack with the light cyan and light magenta is compatible – it is NOT. Do not buy the bundle pack advertised for this product! Epson are just as bad not knowing what’s what with their inks.
Also, Epson only make Red and Grey XL. The only multi-pack that is compatible with this printer that I can find is the C13T379D4010 which is the pack that comes with Red and Grey and it’s only XL! So the cost is 112!!!
I don’t understand why Amazon is still advertising the light cyan and light magenta as compatible! I purchased this printer on the fact the ink (53 pack) was doable. I didn’t purchase the advertised pack, thank god but I didn’t know that I would have to spend 112 on bloody ink for this thing!!!
Also, be careful with A3 prints. It cannot print on 80GSM. I tried everything and the print head just tears the paper. In the instruction manual it claims 75GSM but I think that’s for A4 only. So, while the machine wasted all my ink trying to print on A3 at different settings, I had to purchase much thicker paper.
It is a good printer with good quality prints and it is very easy to use, but it is a money hole when it comes to inks and with Amazon STILL advertising the INCORRECT ink bundle, which is bloody amazing to me, people are going to end up with inks they can’t use!
If you don’t want to buy the horrendously priced XL pack at 112, you will have to purchase the advertised pack then purchase the XL red and grey separately because they only do XL which will leave you with Light Cyan and Light Magenta lying around doing nothing.
This is mind boggling and Epson are also guilty of screwing people over here not just Amazon!
This is a brilliant low cost high quality printer. It fits a series of low budget projects I am doing perfectly. The quality of the printing is quite stunning. The ink however…. The printer ships with 378 ink. The box identifies the 378 Multipack for replacement inks. Amazon ships 378 multipacks as a bundle if you like, when you buy the printer. Curiously the XP-15000 User Guide identifies a 312 and 314 ink cartridge (A four color package, that is not the right ink.)
But wait the Epson 378 multipacks sold through amazon and all UK shops are not the right ink either : )
That ink package include four colors that match the printer and two that do not; light cyan and light magenta. This ink package is SKU number C13T37884010. If you buy this and install it in the printer you will not get a good quality and may void your warranty.
Epson 378 with a DIFFERENT SKU number C13T379D3010 includes all the right inks, grey and red (not the light C and M), as well as as Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black. Here is the kicker it is only available through Epson. But Epson customer service didn’t seem to know that.
First I spent an hour on the phone w Amazon (full refund, no problem). Then spent an hour with Epson to sort the problem. The customer support people first give me the right SKU and assured me that Argus and Curry both ship their full range of inks. I spend two hours running around. The manager at Curry is very nice and calls the regional representative for Scotland who admits there is a problem, the ink is not and likely never will be available at retail stores like Curries or Amazon. He had no answer as why they would have the same Multipack number, with different SKU numbers. The manager at Currys suggests that the confusion over the inks, might be the reason for this…. So I decide to just buy the ‘right SKU’ 387 ink off the Epson website. Only the website is down. I call to see about the order and express delivery on the ink. They take my order but do not provide express delivery. Inconvenient, incredibly time consuming and potentially undermining a project due next week.
Unfortunate mess, I hope it doesn’t undermine the market for this fine printer.
I had been waiting for the time when I could afford / justify the expense of a good quality A3+ photo printer, then Epson announced the launch of
the Expression XP 15000. I didn’t take long to search and find the lowest cost suppliers, and decide which one I trusted most.
Just a little frustrating to not have any media to check the printer, but luckily, the delivery was just in time to beat the Saturday closing time of
my nearest supplier.
Then I spent about half an hour unpacking and setting up.
Note that there are several adhesive tapes holding various parts firmly together with some of them not easy to find, which involves removing the two paper trays to get at the internal ones (which are not visible from the outside) I was guided by the step by step instructions on the CD. but even so, missed one internal tape. The guide refused to go any further, and warned me to remove all tapes before trying to move to the next step, but the machine had already attempted to move on, and tried to move the printer carriage, which produced a strange noise, but luckily did not seem to have caused any damage.
In my view the menu should have explained how many tapes were holding things together and how to find them before pressing “Next”.
Finally I made my first A3 print, Wow what a beautiful result !
I am quite used to super A4 prints from my old Epson photo printer. but this printer allows LIFE SIZE facial portraits, with a quality that I could only previously obtain by sending my files off to a Print firm.
Very expensive media but the results are worth every penny. Just make sure you don’t waste any.
I absolutely love the Epson Expression HD XP – 15000 – A dream to use, has so far done everything I wanted it to..I am an artist and I wanted to make my own art prints to sell..The first prints were from photograph and then manipulated in Photoshop, but did not come out right, it was just scruffy/pixellated and too saturated, I thought it was because I hadn’t bought a good enough printer! but Im guessing I didn’t have settings right in Photoshop and the quality of the photo was not good enough. I thought as I printed on Canson watercolour paper and not Epsons matte paper that might be the problem.
Then I tried a scanned image at 1200 ppi and discovered printing in CMYK and a fair few other settings and 10 prints later I got the perfect print and i am thrilled!!
As a complete beginner in Photoshop and using Printers it was a massive learning curve for me, watching lots of Youtube videos over 3 days and also studying everything I could on the internet all helped me achieve my desired outcome..I thought I had bitten off more than I could chew doing all this myself when most artists go to printers to do all of this and I thought it was actually going to be more like 3 months before I could print out a decent print, so I was thrilled to get it right within 3 days, a day before someone wanted to buy my first print!
It took me about 50 minutes to unbox and completely set up and it even connected to wifi instantly, I didn’t have to do anything, not even press any buttons on router! It was well packaged, it didn’t come with any free paper, but the ink cartridges it came with seem to be full and not partially filled like is sometimes the case with new printers.
It has taken 140lb Canson watercolour paper in rear feed and front feed tray with ease, surprisingly, I wasn’t expecting that..I was worried it would only take certain papers, I have also read elsewhere that it does lots of other things too, like cd printing and stickers and t shirt transfer/iron ons, so I will be trying these other things too, along with seeing if it will take canvas paper to print photos on to make my own personalised photo canvas.
So it sounds like this printer has endless possibilities and I am truly thrilled with it!
I highly recommend this printer, I hope that I will still be just as happy with it in 6 months time or 3 years down the line! We shall see!!
Thankyou Epson!!

The added photo is of my first sold art print done on this printer that I so far highly recommend! Thankyou!
