The hardware is excellent, works well, and is overall very reliable, but it only previews 24 hours of video activity. You will need to pay a subscription to Google to have extra features.
Easy to set up with google account, Can be moved around the house if required. Easy fixed mounting with enclosed hardware. Wide field of visio
Nice camera, and easy to set up and use.
Picture quality is good enough but nothing spectacular, I found night vision really good.
The app for for viewing the videos could do with improving, and hopefully Google will improve the Home experience in general plus the browser web viewing. Slight annoyances currently come from the motion detection alerts, which if you click on when they appear often lead to a notification the video isn’t ready to view yet. Audio option to speak through the camera has seemed a bit hit and miss as to whether it works properly, seems to be a bit of a delay for it to kick in.
Hardware-wise nice, just have to hope Google continue to add some polish to the app side.
Bought to keep an eye on our dog when out of the house! Quality is great and notifications are speedy whenever it detects motion in pre-determined zones.
Two way talk very clear and loud, useful for telling the dog to get off of the sofa!
Appears to be a great product but remember that it needs a good internet speed but living in the country with 12 up and 4 down maximum, often less. cameras would not upload to cloud. Sadly had to return, unfortunately we all don’t have the option of a reasonable internet speed and yes this is the fastest I can get.
The motion detection spots you can apply and what you set the parameters for such as animals, people and cars is one of the best feature sets i’ve seen on a home camera.
The google nest has been a reliable purchase. The camera runs well, the video quality is clear day and night, sound quality is good, the app is easy to use and the nest 24hr service is a reasonable price. The connection between the camera and app can be a little laggy at times, BUT overall I have no complaints
The camera is excellent, the quality is excellent and the online application is excellent.
Drawbacks:
1) Have to be 24×7 connected to the Internet. Local recording with cloud synch would be nice.
2) Long term storage is not possible. Directly uploading to AWS S3 or Google cloud would be nice.
3) The internet application allows only 1 hour clips. Making clips, downloading and uploading to long term storage is a pain. For now I have 1TB storage on OneDrive part of Office 365 and have OneDrive application installed. I download the clips into the OneDrive folder and the OneDrive application synchs the files.
These cameras record 24 hours a day to the cloud, you can scroll using the Nest app to what you want, very simple to set up, very reliable, no issues.
If you are reading this and deciding between this and the new Nest Cam Indoor, DO NOT buy the new one. You cannot use it on the Nest App (only the Google home app), it has a worse sensor despite being 6 years newer, and very minimal improvements elsewhere. Stick to the old cams such as this until they sort out the Google home app, which could be some time
Camera is easy to set up and use, problem is with the subscriptions, these have changed since I got my outdoor IQ a few years ago, 1 subscription is events only and I believe to be pointless and the other (which you will want) is 100 a year… this is a flat fee however no matter how many Google nest cameras you have, so the more cameras the better the value.
It is a good Camera in general but I was surprised later on when I bought another camera for one third of the price in that this second camera has more features and picture/video we’re more superior! If you add the fact that when the first month is over then the camera won’t save any clips unless you pay monthly subscription, you realise that it is an overpriced camera with limited use!
Decent picture quality and well thought out product with night vision and works well as part of our Nest set up watching my fish tank when we are away. Slightly annoying it doesn’t work when you plug it in but does when you reconnect it. Just make sure your WiFi where it’s sited is good otherwise you can get poor picture quality or no picture at all!
A previous indoor security camera we had kept losing the signal from our wifi router that was only about 3m away. This google nest has never lost signal so far other than when there is a power outage and it alerts to inform you of the outage.
It gives an alert while we are out but that could be a change in light or weather blowing against the kitchen vent flap.
Very pleased with the picture quality though thankfully we have never had an intruder to determine if their face would be clearly visible.
Good to be able to view the room while we are away though.
Would rather have a google product than some of those dubious devices with strange brand names that always get priority when doing a search.
The indoor cameras are great and usually work well as WiFi inside the house tends to be reliable. I have signed up to the cloud recording system and save down clips most days. I can save clips on my iPad or iPhone just by pressing on a link, but the clip I get may not always be what I want, so I have to go to my Mac for better access and control, saving longer clips of exactly what I want in terms of start and finish times and also time lapses if I want those (although note you are limited to a 2 minute timelapse duration and Nest often reduces these down to a much shorter period for no obvious reason (maybe related to storage capacity?) – I have yet to find a way to overcome this limitation).
Installation of the indoor cameras is very easy and not much more than plug in and play – you just need to scan the code and link to your account. If your signal is strong, the video quality is superb, but you won’t recognise faces from a distance if the WiFi signal is at all weak, unless someone comes very close. Even then, quality may not be good enough and Nest has enough outages that I often find the signal cuts out just when I want to watch something.
With a subscription of 100pa (currently), I can store 3 hours of saved footage from all of my cameras and have cloud backup of a month’s continuous footage from all of my cameras, plus clips of activities that triggered an alert for another 2 months. You can overcome the limitations of 3 hours in the cloud by saving down and then deleting clips to free up space. You need to keep space free to save down clips as, once you hit 3 hours, the system prevents any more clips from being saved, although the continuous feed continues to be stored, so you can go back in time to get something once you have freed capacity.
For all of the limitations, I would not be without my Nest cameras.
I bought this indoor camera for one purpose, to monitor our home when we are on holiday, for reassurance that everything is fine, which makes it a worth while purchase in my few. The picture quality is good enough, as is nightmode, but I still find the app itself a bit hit and miss on whether it knows we are home or not, and how easy it is to access recordings. This isn’t a product specific issue though, but the Nest ecosystem in general, but is still problematic enough to reduce the review from 5 to 4 star.
After dumping my awful Ring Doorbell, I switched to a Nest Doorbell and was very impressed with the reliability of the daily recordings and timeliness of the notifications etc.
So, when my 4yr old Logi Circle started acting up – this Google Nest cam was a natural choice – even though it was so much dearer than all the other Ring and Amazon offerings.
Since I had already signed up to the Nest Aware subscription for the doorbell, migrating to the new plan would include this camera’s recordings for just a few pounds more.
Overall very happy with this camera, picks and records all events as far as I can tell – not missed any important recordings.
Quality is good – I can go back and check to see if my son was gaming or studying – even though his monitor is 4-5m away from the camera.
I initially missed the Logi circle app – which just works beautifully simply (when the camera was working!) – but soon got used to the nest app.
Overall very happy!
The only negative is that it looks quite ugly compared to my LogiCircle – but I guess you can’t have everything!
Firstly it is an expensive option for a baby monitor, however the peace of mind it provides in clear and accurate video is second to none. The night vision is superb and works well constantly. The picture is crisp and allows for good adjustment by zooming in and out. It resonds well to movement by sending a notification to our phones, and as i working often on nightshift, it is brilliant to be able to check up on my child on my phone while his mum and him sleep.
After a few weeks of using the camera we did notice that the audio quality via our phones was somewhat lacking. My samsung was noticeably lower in sound than my partners iPhone, so we have purchased a cheap entry level audio monitor which we use together with this camera for added peace of mind. I feel the audio feedback is not bad for day time use, it was simply when he was asleep in his own room, or at nights when we require something more than a notification to wake us up. Its also worth noting that it can be somewhat impractical to leave the app open on your phone all night, so we use an existing tablet that we had already.
Nest provide a free one month trial of their subscription service that allows you to play back footage for up to 5 days, we used it a lot, and then decided to try it without for a month. Although you can still use the camrea perfectly well without the subscription, we found it extremely useful to scan back through the night and see patterns etc, so we purchased it in the end. Its a fantasic optional feature, and we feel it complimets the cameras use as a baby monitor well.
In summary we’re glad we purchased this camera. It’s superb quality provides peace of mind and frankly we dont think you can put a price on that when you have a baby, especially if its your first! Potential cons are absolutely the additional extras like subscriptions and potentially audio monitor to compliment the camera, although it must be said these are not absolutely necessary, its just we felt they were right for our circumstances.
I would recommend and it helps that after your baby grows out of needing an audio monitor you then have a security camera you can use around your home if you need it.
The Nest cam seemed to have everything we required, great picture quality, ability to record, can view from anywhere (main purpose to pop in on feed whilst at work) and sound. There were reviews on this from people who say it’s not safe to use in nursery however after 6 months I can say it’s been perfect.
It can be wall mounted or stand on flat surfaces. It comes with a lond powere lead which makes life easier for positioning. The image quality is HD and it does pick up sound easily. Both of these will send notifications to your devices almost instantly if you are not watching live via a phone or tablet. We use an old iPad to monitor constantly in the day then just use notifications at night along with a separate noise monitor for extra comfort.
There’s no need to pay for the subscription as I still get the notifications, plus it seems a bit pricey for what it is. Simple to setup on WiFi which makes it easier to transport to other places if travelling. Overall it’s been perfect for what we need, plus I can use it as a security camera once baby is older.
PREVIOUS POST BELOW.
These are great cameras and the cloud recording feature is a paid service, it really adds to the functionality of the device.
However I had an issue where a payment bounced because a card had expired. It would not let me add a new card due to some sort of bug. I contacted support and following a lengthly chat I have to remove all teh cameras and smoke alarms from the account and reinstall them. I have a number of devices and need to access the bar codes on each of them. The support personnel are powerless to change the system from their end. So works well but if a payment does not go through expect a pile of trouble. I was also given technically incorrect advice where it was suggested to set up the cameras to a different structure to the smoke alarms. This significantly impacts on the functionality and safety of the system. The only option was to escalate to engineering and a fix time of 3-5 days.
I have been eyeballing this camera for about a year due to 1) Not being available in Sweden 2) the lack of free recording.
Regarding 1), it was an easy choice when amazon offered it and would ship out of U.K. Very greatful for that.
Regarding 2), even with the last free snapshot function I’m still wondering if this camera will ever be fully unleashed with no subscription. I’m guessing not, as nest has a viable subscription plan to hook you up with.
Even though I’ve currently chosen to go along without a subscription I feel that it offers a really great value (when it was discounted). The simplicity of setting it up was truly a very nice touch. I should add that I have two protects that manages the home/away setting automagically.
The clarity of the image is top notch even in night mode. I’m possibly buying a second one in the coming months and hoping for a native integration to SmartThings soon.
The Nest Cam is a WiFi enabled Internet Protocol (IP) Camera that has a maximum resolution of 1080p – Full HD.
IP Cameras are predominantly used for surveillance, and unlike traditional CCTV cameras, Nest can send and receive data via a computer network and the Internet. The benefits of using Nest over CCTV are:
Two-way audio via a wireless network allows users to listen to and speak with the subject of the video.
Google’s video analytics allows the camera to analyze images in real time and alert you only when a human is on camera.
Remote accessibility, which allows live video from selected cameras to be viewed anywhere in the world from any computer, mobile smartphone or other device with the Nest App installed.
Disadvantages of using Nest Cameras over standard CCTV are:
Higher initial cost per camera and optional monthly/annual subscription fee. (300pa/30pcm for 30 days recording on 1 camera – additional camera subscriptions are discounted to half price for additional subscriptions)
A fast and reliable internet connection is required.
Video playback on the app can be temperamental.
The Nest Camera can integrate with other connected devices, such as the Nest Thermostat and Nest Aware Smoke Alarm amongst many others. So for example, if Nest doesn’t track movement for a period of time around your house, it will turn your heating off.
After a year with the Nest Cams would I recommend it? If strengthening your home security is what you’re after and it’s within your budget, then yes, absolutely. I think the security and remote control of my home that Nest offers is fantastic. The Cameras are even better when connected to other Nest and “Works With Nest” devices.
Setup
Setting up the Nest using the iPhone app was simple and straightforward. Took a few mins but mostly you are waiting for the app to do something rather than tinkering around with IP settings on your router. Full marks for ease of setup.
Website
I mainly use the website to keep an eye on things and the software is excellent. If you have used AngelCam then I would say the Nest website is much better. The ability to see on the timeline motion detection events and a thumbnail with a few frames in it is great for me and the way i use a web cam.
Another useful feature is the ability to setup motion detection zones. I use this when monitoring my car on the drive. Zone 1 for anyone walking a little close to the drive and Zone 2 for anyone near the car.
You can also choose to setup the quality of the recording, I’ve got a decent fibre optic connection so it’s on full HD but if your internet speed is a little slower you can choose auto or select the quality yourself.
App
I installed the app on my iPod touch and my Android phone. You can do pretty much everything on the app that you can on the website.
If you have a windows phone then you are out of luck. I could not find an app that worked with the Nest and your browser will not be able to run the website because Nest are using Flash to playback the Nest picture and Flash is not supported. I use the WP as my main phone so this is pretty annoying but I understand WP has a small (but loyal) following.
Subscription
I will be paying for the subscription, 80 per year. It’s a lot but I get to record, create clips and excellent play back for that service. Yep it is annoying that the Nest Cam does not work with AngelCam or other cloud services. But as long as the web site stays responsive, fast and the software is supported I will be ok with that.
Summary.
I use the Dash Cam to monitor my car on the drive. The picture is excellent, motion detection is good (not perfect) and the software is excellent.
Would have given it 5 stars if they supported Windows Phone and opened up the camera stream to other apps and cloud providers.
The Nest cameras are far superior to the Motorolla. They are very stylish, exceptionally well made with sturdy metal magnetic bases but come with wall/ceiling mounts if you want. If you like the quality of Apple and B&O products you’ll love anything from Nest. The white cable is quite thick and inflexible but solid. Love the round plugs! We didn’t need to store the video footage for playback as we use it to check our dogs are okay if we leave them for a couple of hours. The night vision is strong but the wide angle lens and quality of view is fantastic as is the app (if you have other Nest products the cams are just added to your account and the app and are there live as soon as you open the app.) In two and a half months they have never failed, signal has been excellent from an iPhone to the camera even from abroad so their server side is excellent (we have very good broadband but even when it has dropped the signal has been good from the cameras). More than one person can access the same camera at the same time from the family account. The zoom facility is really simple in the smartphone app and things like notifications and talking from the smartphone through the cameras is great (even if it does freak the dogs out when they hear a bodiless voice they know telling them to stop barking and lie down!)
I purchased 2 Nest Cams a couple of months ago to go into my mothers flat ( she is 90) within a care home environment – and in truth they work brilliantly well so the product is fine I have no problem with that at all.
However I give you all a warning if you are planning a subscription to their footage storage service once your free trail runs out.
I opted to take the 14 day storage plan for 2 cams at 12 pounds per month – all worked fine and was able to capture and store/copy of a section that showed mum having a fall – and just how good the response was to the incident on the day.
About 10 days ago I received notice that my payment for the monthly fee had not gone through – well that was not right as funds are pretty plentiful and was only12 pounds – I contacted CS right away – it turns out it was my mums bank card that had just been lost – and was being replaced – so in other words Nest taking payments off a card rather than straight from a Bank account ! – people lose -get their cards damaged all the time need to have them replaced – it happens !- I informed Nest CS that a New Card was in transit and I would change it on the web site account soon as I received it – it may be 7-10 days, “yes no problem sir thanks for letting us know”.I asked please make a note- “yes sir no problem”
Last Saturday I was out at a concert – I just checked to see if Mum was OK- but something I seen on the Cam was alarming me – so I left the gig- shot around to my Mums flat to find a criminal act had taken place – and my mother had been abused – I can’t and won’t say any more than that at the moment.
I contacted the CS in Dublin the next morning and explained what had happened – the upshot is they say they have wiped the film ! – but they would come back to me to see if their is anything that can be done.
I am sure many will know that you cannot entirely “wipe” from recording methods be it from a PC or from a SD card – its always there in the background – so it can be retrieved if needed.
Still NEST have not come back to me – I have just rang them one last time and am waiting their reply – if you are reading this the answer was negative – so I WARN you this can happen – Nest take the money in advance – people do lose- damage their cards it WILL happen – and now a person who committed a criminal act will get away with it.
I’m pretty sure Nest get to use Mommy & Daddy’s amazing Cloud Platform to which Petabytes are no more than Megabytes to you and, again Q1 2016, I fully understand why the subscriptions are quite expensive. With expensive obviously being subjective.
To close I’d say I am really impressed by the device. It does run kinda warm at the rear. I did return it but my decision was based on it just not really fitting with my requirements and not a flaw in the product. As always I’m wanting something that isn’t feasible yet.
P.S. I’d really like to know the name of the plastic but almost rubber feeling material used on the rear of the camera. I’d be as happy as a pig in the proverbial if it can be 3D printed.
Absolutely fantastic! Rock solid performance!
Over the years have tried 2 other makes and what has let them down is their “App crashing”!
Being Google, like Apple, they make it just WORK.
It’s the easiest ever set up. Slick simple and great packaging.
Ok, no Ethernet/ micro SD but this would take away the Google up-sell of the monthly charge which they want. I bought one a few days ago from PC Worl to give it a whirl, was so impressed
I ordered another 2 nest cams and a net protect from Amazon. 10’day record is a no brainier. Have no moaning to be done here re having to pay the monthly charge. If the app and featured did not work like a Slickster then they would all go back for a refund but all really is fab and works solidly well. So far this has to be the most robust set up and viewing/slick user friendly option out there.
Also bought a drop cam outdoor case which will be setting up too.
Once again, in an ideal world, Ethernet and SD option but really is not a deal breaker.
Phoned up Nest and wanted to have my 2nd monitor to view my cameras and here is nothing out there that will pick them up due to their bank encryption software, so you have to individually opens each Nestcam and move it, resize so you have have multiple windows open permanent. Same as having a app which would make it smoother looking but hope they can look into that.
Simple, no fuss and works.
Very easy to set up and works very well. I have it set so when I set my thermostat to away it sets both my cameras to record. Very slick. I also record midnight to 7am on the schedule while I’m asleep. It records snippets of noise and movement very well.
Downsides are the actual nest app is SO slow to load. The push alerts are unreliable when the app it’s on more than one device (say you and your wife both have the app, which is perfectly reasonable set up). It just feels way too clunky for a top end system. I have other non nest HD cameras that are much faster to load, I just can’t understand why it’s so slow. It should be a pleasure to use but feels like they just haven’t polished it yet for usability.
Overall it’s good and I’d recommend it. But come on Nest, you can do better than this. Since you were bought by Google for over a billion dollars, I can’t accept you don’t have the time or resources to get this right.
The settings are pretty flexible – if you don’t want to run them all the time, you can use the other Nest device’s ‘auto-away’ setting to switch your cameras on and off, or use a schedule. It can use a couple of settings up to 1080 video to let you trade off data transfer against video quality. It has a very wide angle lens – so it can cover a wide area. You can set particular zones to monitor, and zoom in to an area of interest. All in all, really good. You can see the video in real time or (with a subscription to Nest Aware) see history for a period. To be honest, without the subscription it will be of limited use – but the price isn’t too unreasonable (8 per month for the first camera, and 4 per month for subsequent ones). It can give you notifications of motion and/or sound but currently can’t send you an email. Since the original Dropcam could do this, I’m hoping that Nest restore this functionality. You can also talk to someone using the camera – which could be useful.
I really like the Nest Cam. It removes a lot of the awkward configuration needed for IP cameras at the cost of tying you to Nest for full functionality. Some won’t like that trade-off, but for me it works well and gives a very quick and easy way to monitor our house when we are away.
