Worked perfect for a series of weekend long LANs at convention centers to keep 12+ cans cold at a time; as long as we kept the lid closed and filled it every night it was perfect.
I love that it is soft and easy to carry and store. it also has more space then the conventional hard topped coolers.
The customer service is absolutely fantastic. They addressed my concerns swiftly and precisely.
Would definitely buy again.
Thank you.
Well my bigger koolatron finally bit the bullet after continuess cycles. So I quickly went to Amazon to get a new one. This one was the cheapest of the bunch so I purchased it. It works ok, but it could use some tweaking. Like where you plug it in. Should be at the top not the bottom occasionally it can come. And I find you have to position your contents so everything gets cold and stays cold. But all in all I’m happy with it. Just need to get use to having a different one.
This kept my food and drinks very cold. The only problem is that the 12volt plug broke after my 1st time using it. As of this review in waiting for a new one.
***Editing – I added a few small gel ice packs near the fan and it lowered the temp of the cooler even more! Just when I thought this cooler couldn’t get any better, it did!
I bought this cooler for traveling with breastmilk and needed to make sure it would be able to maintain a uniform temp in the car, on a plane, etc. I plugged the cooler in the moment I unpacked it and let it cool empty for a few hours before using one of my temp alarms to monitor the temp and I was pleasantly surprised! I thought it would maybe get Ja lightly cooler than the ambient temperature around it, but it’s much cooler than that! I am going to let it run for 24 hours to see how it does and experiment around with adding some ice packs to it to see if it can maintain a cooler temp with some assistance from gel packs. Otherwise I think this cooler is a great item and I am almost tempted to buy a second just in case anything happens to it! I’m excited to get out and use it on my upcoming trips and will be able to breathe easy knowing my precious cargo will be cooled at a consistent temperature! So glad I was able to snatch this up on sale, but even at full price I would say it’s worth it! It’s like having one of those small can coolers that plug in with the added functionality to be able to fold it up flat for storage!
Those solid coolers they sell are too heavy for me to carry, even without food!
This is nice and light-weight, and it gets cool quickly. The cord is long enough to put it in the back seat or maybe the back deck, depending size of car or truck. It looks sturdy. Being able to fold it up when not in use is also quite handy…
Because of a new job that I acquired. I purchased this cooler. I am impressed so far as to how well it is keeping my products cold. I did have to purchase the 120 volt plug adapter. But that is working well so far as well. I am debating on if I want to get the other adapter that protects the car battery.
Traveling the east coast for the summer we were able to take all the necessary foods from location to the next. Our grandkids loved having a cold soda on the trip. I bought a portable power supply so we can take to the beach.
We enjoy long road trips and don’t care to eat out for all meals. This works perfectly. Being retired truck drivers hubby and I are use to having a large thermal cooler at our disposal. This is not only the perfect size but keeps our food ice cold and easy to store when not in use. Great product.
As a delivery person working in the summer heat. This keeps lunch cool enough so not to worry about lunch spoiling or going bad. Not a refrigerator but cooler than outside.
I used it for the first time this weekend on my five hour trip. I just plugged it in for 30 minutes before, and it got cold very quickly. Someone wrote about the fan, and yes, it was loud at the beginning, but that has passed . I also bought the adapter and both work great. Highly recommend this , for those, like me, who do a lot of traveling. Buying food from Costco just got more interesting
This is great for the Pontoon. Easy to carry, works great, keeps everything cold.
In my test it was able to cool empty bag to 13 degrees Celsius LESS than the ambient room temperature. It was +20 in the room and after 3 hours running it was +7 inside. It would take forever to cool down full load thou. Make sure you load it with PRE-cooled items from your fridge.
And it actually draws quite a bit at around 50 watts. So if you intend to run it from your car battery once the engine shuts, keep it in mind.
We purchased this cooler for a driving trip from Arizona to Anchorage Alaska. It was perfect for keeping our snacks and beverages cool while on the road. Every morning we put a few frozen water bottles in the cooler to give it a head start….then plugged it in while in the car to keep everything plenty cold. While available to purchase from the manufacturer…it would be helpful to include a 110v converter with the initial purchase. A converter would be welcome for overnights in a motel.
The product is good. It does not include the power adapter to plug into a wall outlet. Getting that extra makes the product quite expensive. The inside looks a bit smaller than what I expected.
UPDATE: It’s still going after 10 years of heavy use. Indispensable for family travel and blackouts. Still highly recommend.
I’m so shocked to see such negative reviews of this product. After six years of heavy use across countless miles, and throughout numerous power outages, our Koolatron is still going strong.
We love it so much that I’m considering a larger model for camping. But, I’m not sure if we’ll need more than this. The capacity on this 26-Quart model is sufficient to carry all the essentials for our family of six, and our food stays fresh for days.
I can barely function without milk for my coffee, and our little ones go through it like crazy. But, even after loading in a full gallon jug, I’m still amazed at how much more this relatively compact model can accommodate. In addition to the requisite milk supply, we usually load it up with fruit, veggies, cheese, yogurt, and condiments, and still have room for extra drinks.
To assure that we get the most out of it, we add our cold food straight from the fridge to the cooler on the AC adapter. Once we’re ready to go, we move it to the car on its native DC connection, then reconnect it at our destination with the adapter again.
While it is not a refrigerator, it is sufficiently powerful to keep food fresh this way for several days. In fact, I can’t remember ever needing to throw out spoiled food due to a lack of cooling power.
We haven’t tested it in extreme heat, but we’ve been more than pleased with its performance at home during power outages, and in hotels where the temperatures are rarely above 73. In these instances, 40 below 73 should be about 33. I don’t think it ever gets quite that cold, but it does chill and preserve the food well enough to produce condensation on the containers, and to keep us eating fresh for days on end.
We love that this system allows us to eat well and save money on family trips, rather than going broke and making ourselves ill eating ‘road food’. It also enables us to conveniently satisfy the whimsical and erratic appetites of our four little ones with healthy food fast and on the cheap. In this way, we feel this cooler has paid for itself many times over.
The pockets are a big help too. This is where we pack items such as salt, pepper, sugar, utensils, small cutting boards, napkins, and more.
This model is constructed with a strong rigid shell inside (so it doesn’t collapse much for storage), but the soft sides yield a little in tight spaces, and make it more comfortable to carry.
The shoulder strap is another great feature too, since it frees up our hands to haul other luggage and gear.
Even the fabric itself has proven to be very durable, despite years of rough handling.
In addition to traveling well (including a drive from Oklahoma to New York with our 1- and 3-year-old daughters in a Jeep Wrangler!), it kept us afloat while we were without power for nine days after Hurricane Sandy. We charged our Stanley J5C09 1000 Peak Amp Jump Starter off of our car, then ran the Koolatron off of it for about 6-8 hours on, and about 2-3 hours off with great success. Despite the lack of power and refrigeration, we had all of our basics and, between the cooler and our gas range, we still ate well nonetheless.
It would have been a major hassle to keep ice stocked daily, when all we needed was a tank of gas and a battery pack to make this little powerhouse hum.
After so many years of reliable service, we are extremely satisfied with our purchase.
This cooler has been a great investment for our family, and I strongly recommend it for travel and emergencies.
Bought this to keep my medicines and unused insulin cold during 3-4 month road and air trips. Once opened, I keep the insulin vials in a Frio wallet and it lasts for a month. The Koolatron bag works very well, cooling down to under 40F when the ambient temperature is 70F+ I use it in the car with the cooling element pointed at the aircon vents and in hotels with an AC 12V adapter. I’ve been monitoring the temperature with a refrigerator thermometer as I’ve had hotel fridges freeze my insulin, thus destroying it. So far after about a month of travel, it has been perfect although in a cold room of 65F, it went down to close to 32F. So I’m careful to make sure that the room temperature isn’t below 70F. It’s also spacious enough that I put other things like food and drinks in it. It’s not silent, but quiet enough and far better than the hotel bar fridges with a compressor that cycles. Has a spacious pocket on the side to store the AC adapter and 12V cord. When in a hotter environment of 80-90F, I put a frozen gel pack at the bottom. So far the gel pack has never melted completely in over 24 hrs of use in high temperature.
We recently upfitted a stripped out new Sprinter van as an oversized two person SUV to carry our extensive sporting equipment. As part of the upfit, we designed a custom console between the seats to perform several functions, including holding a cooler to keep food safe for day trips. We shopped around for different coolers with a small foot print, and built our entire console around this Koolatron. After a full year of use, it does exactly as advertised–keeps the food temperature roughly 30-35 degrees lower than ambient temperature–it is NOT a refrigerator! So if our Sprinter interior is a comfortable 75 with AC as we drive down the road, the Koolatron keeps our food at just under 40 degrees. We know from our Airstream refrigerator that temperatures around 36 degrees will preserve food for relatively long periods of time, so this is a very acceptable temperature for overnight or day trips.
We originally thought we’d be taking the cooler in and out of the vehicle to refill each day, but we’ve found it easier to bag food and leave the cooler in the console. If you are using it more conventionally, like between your seats in a van with no center console, for example, you’ll find it easy to carry in and out. Some reviewers mentioned a noisy fan–we have to lean over to listen to make sure that we turned it on, we find it so quiet. The exhaust output is of course warm–we have a metal mesh screen built into the back of the console for this purpose. This was expected and is completely normal.
Everybody at the upfitter shop was so impressed with the console design around this cooler that two other customers order the same console/cooler when they saw ours, and the shop bought a half a dozen for future upfits. A Very positive experience out about 16 months from purchase.
I got this cooler in Late Jan 2011. I took it on a cross country trip even through West Tx, NM and AZ. This cooler kept our items cool and we made sandwiches along the way. I just got back from a trip where I did not have a refrigerator in the hotel room. I took mine in with cream for coffee, cheese and beefstick for late night sandwiches. I plugged it in (with the optional powerpack) and everything was still cold. I added a room temperature soda can on day two and by the time I got home the soda can was cold. I also had cold packs in this refrigerator and they were cold enough to ease sore muscles.
I also put all my items in this cooler cold and add an ice pack.
Update,
I just got back from a trip where I was driving all day. I packed my cold items in the cooler and put a pillow of ice on top. The ice pillows I refreeze each night when I am in a hotel that has a freezer. Most days I was driving 10-12 hours. I place the cooler in the back of my SUV and plug it in. I place light colored fabric on top to reduce the solar effect. Most of the driving days were 95-100 degrees. My food arrived cold and some of it was still frozen as I brought frozen food with me to eat at night and the ice pillows were still partially frozen. I will be going to Fl in a couple weeks and will be taking my cooler with me. It is doing a great job for me.
I bought the Koolatron to keep food warm before a game. This year we went to spring training in Phoenix. Each morning I would cook lunch for that day and pack it in the Koolatraon. We then went out on morning excursions in the area. We would eat the food afterwards when we reached the ball park for the day. Most days the food was kept in the Koolatron from 7 Am to Noon. The warmer was used between 3 and 4 hours with the car engine off and we never had a problem with the battery (and the battery is 5 or more years old). I checked, and the food was 145 degrees F when removed from the pack. Koolatron does not advice this as a food safety device, but this is better than room temperature for several hours and it tastes better hot.
The inside bottom liner does get HOT when in warmer mode so be careful. I will be purchasing the smaller versions of this warmer for personal trips as this one is large enough for a family.
The cooler options is OK but not as great as the warmer. As others have stated it does not work as well as adverticed but works much better than just a plain cooler. I would suggest using ice in the Koolatron – but make sure it is sealed. Try a frozen capped water bottle or double zipped baggies.
Koolatron makes two different versions of this product – the difference being the external pocketing. So make sure when you are purchasing one that it has the pocket configuration that would work better for you.
I will preface this review with this caveat: Auto coolers are not refrigerators. They will keep cold things cold, with help.
My husband drives a truck for 12-16 hours per day. He never stops, so I pack his lunch every day. He carries water, energy drinks, veggies, sandwiches, sometimes pizza, etc. He used a Rubbermaid cooler for a long time, but it was too small. He needed a larger cooler that would fit between the seats of the truck and have more space.
This cooler is HUGE. They make two smaller ones, but since I like to load it up with big ice packs, it’s a good size. It’ll never actually be full unless we take a trip with it, though. 2 liter bottles stand up in it and I’m guessing that six of them would fit. I load it up with 2 1.5 liter water bottles, a couple of 16 oz lowcarb Monster drinks, plus a sandwich, cherry tomatoes fruit and other snacks and the cooler is still about half full even with the two large blue ice bags.
The Koolatron does the job nicely. It will not cool warm things down well and if left on its own, cold things will start to warm up after 8-10 hours, so I put 2 large blue ice bags in the cooler every morning and they come back at night still partially frozen. Any leftover drinks are still cold.
I also purchased the power inverter so that I could plug in the cooler first thing when I get up. I then load the cooler and the ice bags right before he leaves. That helps considerably.
Is the cooler keeping things at 40*? Doubtful, but it’s keeping them cold enough that drinks are refreshing and his food does’t spoil. He keeps the AC on in the truck all the time, so the cooler doesn’t have to work too hard.
A soft sided cooler like this isn’t as effective as a hardsided cooler, so there’s a bit of a tradeoff, but it’s the largest one I could find that would fit where it needed to go (between the seats of a Peterbilt Daycab after removing the drink holders) and it’s lightweight. The shoulder strap makes it easy to carry. By the time I load it down with a couple liters of water, drinks, ice and use the bungee on top for his paperwork, it weighs about 30 pounds or so. A hard cooler would be impossible.
The outside pockets are handy, you can even put ice in the drink holder (which will only hold a cup the diameter of a soda can). There’s a mesh pocket in the back that’s also very handy.
Overall, we’re very pleased with this cooler, but unlike the another reviewer, our expectations were more realistic.
