We had the previous Velop units and were happy with them, but wanted to extend the network into places where it didn’t work well and got these.
They are much bigger than the older ones, but are compatible with them. If you mix and match, use these as your router and shift the WiFi 5 one out as a node. We have a home office and wired it to the hut, which actually helps the nodes between it and the main router doubling their speeds!
These are pricey, but really good.
We have community fiber 500mbs which included a single, smaller version of these.
Setup took a short while having to change the settings to match my previous setup.
We split the 2.5ghz and 5ghz networks and this allows you to do that but only by going through the Web interface not the app.
As with any router, the closer you are the better speed you get. I have the main unit downstairs and the second almost directly above it and the connection between the two offers full speed.
As a test, I have a computer hardwired to the secondary unit and get the full 500mb through it.
The worst speed I have at any point around the house is 350mb which isn’t bad in my opion.
My only criticism is that the switching between units is not ideal but that may be a setting I have set or my devices. I can be downstairs and the device might still be connected to the upstairs node. But even if i get 300-350mb it’s still fast enough!
I chose Linksys Velop MX10600 after researching extensively. I wanted a WiFi 6 Tri band mesh network to cover 3 bed semi on two floors as I had some dead spots around the house. Set up was extremely easy without any hassle as it simply needs powered up and follow instructions to install one after the other. The router login on web browser is easy to rename devices, manage network and set different parameters including guest access and parental control. I initially bought two nodes system and as an afterthought (to make far end of garden and garage connected in range) I bought an extra node on auctioning site which too was very easy to install in my mesh as it was same as the other nodes.
I have two nodes on ground floor covering both ends and one in the master bedroom upstairs making a triangular network dome.
A good plus point is this equipment has 4 Ethernet ports behind each node along with one USB port which makes it convenient for wired connection for some devices. I have an old ptz cam that was erratic on WiFi but after establishing a wired connection with bedroom node (drilled a hole in the wall to bring in cable and trunking it) it works like magic now. Never lost connection in about three weeks after installation.
I ditched landline broadband couple of months ago and opted for 5G home broadband and Velop works effortlessly with it. There have been a couple of drops in network but sorted all too easily without any difficulties.
I’d recommend this highly for anyone who’s even technologically challenged as it’s an extremely easy and efficient mesh network.
Will update the review in about three months to report experience and if any technical difficulties.
Always had problems around the house, literally spent close to 1000 on different devices trying to solve this problem. This works a treat and I can full coverage, high speed internet in all the bedrooms, downstairs and garden.
UI is ok, feels a bit clunky and the app isn’t really necessary as the router has a web based config page you can access.
I got this two pack of Linksys routers to provide greater coverage and replacing my wxcelent but aging Apple airport devies.
Setup was simple and the devises have been super stable providing great mesh functionality and provide a great wifi connection. Waiting to see if a firmware update will add Apple HomeKit support like the others in the range but would really recommend these devices
These are good quality – but so they should be for the price! It took about 3 hours to set it up – I had to try different combinations, and move them around the house, but eventually I got them to work, using a combination of Ethernet connections and WiFi. I am a complete dunce when it comes to anything electrical or computer based, so it’s a miracle I got them to work! The kids are very pleased that there is brilliant WiFi coverage all over the house, for the first time ever – so that’s a result! Let’s hope it lasts
I liked that there are 5 Ethernet ports on each node. The coverage throughout the house is much better. I would have needed 4 nodes of the smaller tri-band model, where are with these I only need two.
I have about 2200 sq ft house and about 40m of garden from the house and the two devices.
It’s a tech house so there are quite a few devices on the network with a mix of 2.4 and 5ghz devices.
With two people at home on conf calls and two kids either streaming hd to phones/tablets or laptops and an xbox gaming all at the same time haven’t had any problems with any of the devices.
Only the LG tv occasionally buffers but this is a poor tv design as it was doing it with the old system as well.
BEST THING!
This system was turn on with the app and just worked out the box. Connected the second point device and again just worked and connected. Every device has just connected quickly and easily. Guest access network all setup and simple. If you want to do much more in a technical level though this device doesn’t give you much of an option.
WORST THING!
You can’t turn off the light on the top of the box! I contacted Linksys as the master device is in the bedroom and when the room is dark the led light on the top of the device is very bright! Other linksys devices you have an option to turn it off. Not on this one, I have asked for it to be added to the next linksys update.
RECOMMENDATION!
If you are not tech savvy, like 90% of the world and you want great range and performance then this just works! Turn it on, follow some really simple instructions in the app and you are away! If you know how to download an app from the mobile store then you can get this working! You will be free to wander the house and never loose wifi or even notice you are changing which device you are connected to.
It is expensive, Mesh systems are, but if you have deadspots in the house my experience says you won’t after!
Little technical:
Moved from a standard BT hub was generally at best getting 20-22mb download connection with 30mb download occasionally using a samsung s22 as a test using speedtest on 5ghz connection.
I now get 32mb download regularly. Upload is now normally around 10mb up from around 9mb.
I still get 24mb+ (on s22) from the bottom of the garden (40-50m from devices which are inside the house). It was no problem to Stream a whole disney+ film without any buffering or degradation of the picture on a laptop.
Connection is good and reliable. Also fast response compare with bt “smart”hub. However, It dont have vlan. And don’t support apple homekit (yet?). So I cannot separate smart things in network. How come new linksys product but with fewer function than old product?
I had the older Velop routers and hoped that these would let me cover my 3 storey townhouse with only 2 routers instead of 3, but that was not to be and I had to order another one.
Setting up is relatively simple but a bug in the app meant that it dropped half of my ISP login as it is an email address. The app dropped the @vodafone.com from the login, but techsupport were very helpful and solved it quite quickly by logging in directly to the router GUI instead of the app where I could see and correct the incorrect login.
It’s definitely NOT worth upgrading from Velop V1 or V2 to these unless you really want WiFi 6 which won’t speed up your Internet connection, only the connection between your local devices.
We were using the BT’s Premium Whole Home WiFi System (three disks) and for a year everythig worked fine, and then it started to loose contact with some of the devices the house, with the only way to recove being to re-boot the wifi – I can only assume it was due to firmware changes, as nothing else with the BT disks changed.
We really need a fast dependable wifi as both my wife and I work from home and are in constent video conferences….
I decided to upgrade to a more powerful wifi mesh system and after reading reviews decided to try the Linksys MX5300 (triple pack). Getting the wifi and running took 15mins and since installed we have had no down time on the wifi and every device has been connected and stable.
I think for the number of devices and the size of the house, the MX5300 might be a bit on the ‘overkill’ size – but really happy with it.
Looking at the control app functions, I would say that the Linksys system may be less configurable than some of the other alternatives… but for a install and forget system – this is perfect.
I had thr MR9600 router which was connected to these MX devices creating a mesh around the house. It was constantly disconnecting from the Internet. The issue wasn’t with the ISP.
Spoke to Linksys tech support over a number of days to try different things. They were great, they made notes linked to telephone number so when calling I didn’t need to explain again.
The eventual solution was to take out the MR9600 as the parent and replace it as parent with the Mesh devices. I connected the MR9600 as a child node.
The signal and connection is stable and great with signal all over the house. I have a total of 5 nodes and they connect and work great.
The Linksys app is a little slow but again functionality is great.
If you want a good mesh network you won’t go too far wrong using these Linksys devices
I pondered this purchase for some time – the MX10600s are not cheap. But having switched broadband providers to something much faster and being fed up with half-good Wi-Fi extenders that didn’t really work, I decided to go for it.
So far, so great. The system is really simple to set up (I put my newly-installed Virgin Media hub into Modem Mode), plugged the first node into it and within 20 minutes had incredibly strong, fast Wi-Fi throughout the house.
They’ve been working faultlessly since, there a absolutely no weak spots anywhere and the range extends a good distance into the street / garden. Very impressed & recommended.
I have switched from various routers and this one has one of the most stability. Not super lot of feature but it very stable what matter the most for me anyways.
– solid performance, very easy to achieve over 1Gbit speeds between nodes; actual speed will vary greatly with the WiFi client type and nodes position (don’t expect a mobile phone to reach Gbit speeds, also don’t expect to put the nodes more than 2 rooms apart, your mileage may vary);
– the Ethernet ports on the child nodes are also usable for clients, so you can easily hard wire a console/computer/printer etc; this will typically result in better performance versus using WiFi on said devices;
– weird radio choice; these are not true WiFi6, in the sense that one of the 5GHz radios is actually WiFi5 (although very quick 4×4 at 1.7Gbps); from what I gather, Linksys set this radio up to be the preferred backhaul, as it’s slightly more powerful (24dBm vs 16dBm on the WiFi6);
– on the child nodes, the band used for backhaul is not usable by clients; this can result in the child nodes turning off AP on the WiFi6 5GHz radio in certain conditions, especially where the main router is rebooted, as WiFi6 radios always come online quicker because they’re using non-DFS channels; just power cycle your child nodes to avoid this;
– very little WiFi configuration available; you can only select Wi-Fi channels and width (and only form the web admin interface); the usual config items available otherwise (DHCP/reservations/QoS/port forwarding etc);
– ideally put the ISP hub in modem mode (all UK ISP supplied “hubs” have this option); this will result in better performance, and potentially avoiding IP conflicts (typically both your hub and the Velop use the same 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, which is guaranteed to cayuse you headaches); alternatively, set up the Velop in “bridge” mode, this will turn off routing and DHCP on it, using your existing hub for these functions; I CANNOT STRESS HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS, it’s one of the reasons a lot of users leave negative reviews for mesh WiFi systems;
– very bulky (and quite heavy) nodes, check if you intend to stick on a shelf, cupboard etc;
– finally, quite expensive unless you’re getting these on a discount, but you do get decent WiFi performance and coverage;
Not sure about value for money as I didn’t check any others out. It was real easy to set up and is very flexible. Signal is far better than my standard SkyQ router but not as good as I’d have hoped. We have two in a house that should really be covered by one per the stats and although say 90% of the house is perfect there is still some slippage. Might be placement issues but have tried a few places and always missing a small area.
There are plenty of WiFi mesh networking systems on the market today. Unfortunately few offer WiFi 6 and the capability to really use high-speed wireless to the fullest, and many are not what I class as true mesh networks: they have a router node and satellites.
Having used the Linksys Velop as my home mesh network for years, I decided to upgrade to take advantage of WiFi 6, the additional networking ports, and hopefully power when this came on offer at Amazon.
I have not been disappointed! Upgrading from the existing system to this one was a breeze as I was able to transfer the configuration from the original primary node to the new WiFi 6 version without having to go through the entire setup again. Major plus!
Once configured, I was concerned that moving from the 3 nodes with the previous Velop system to the 2 nodes of the WiFi 6 version would impact coverage: My concerns were happily unfounded. Not only does the new WiFi 6 system cover without issue, but also extends to a ridiculous distance providing WiFi well away from my house and into the street.
The Linksys management app remains the same for simple and great management and once set up it has been running without a hitch. The 4x Ethernet ports and USB port on the nodes are a real bonus, too, as I’ve been able to pull a couple 5-port switches out of the mix and connect directly to the node for less equipment. I love streamlining!
Although costly if you need a solid WiFi 6 based *true* mesh networking system, you will likely be very happy with the MX10600 Try-Band WiFi 6 system.
The *only* drawback, which I hope will be addressed with a future update, is this does not support HomeKit integration and management as the standard Velop mesh networking units do, however this is minor given the overall performance of the system.
Exceptional quality. Very simple set up. No professional install require. Just plug and go. We have over 30 connected devices on our home. Connections were routinely dropping before we got this Velop Wifi 6 mesh network. No regrets. Getting almost full ISP bandwidth on all devices now. iPhone was previously getting 70 mbps from a router connected to a 350 mbps line (and constantly dropping due to device contention). Now it’s over 300 mbps and never drops even in the garden.
I liked the addition of a USB port on the Velop compared to the Orbi (Connected to a Samsung T5 SSD) and I liked idea that each node operates on an individual basis, rather than being a satellite to the main node, dedicated backhaul was not an issue as I had already decided to hard-wire the entire system. The price though was a huge factor in my decision too, purchased three nodes, a twin pack and an individual node, all for much less than the comparable Orbi system would have cost.
A bit about my setup, as mentioned, I have three nodes all hard-wired throughout my house (~4000sq/ft) with Cat 8 Ethernet cables, connected to a 1Gbps Fiber Connection, an important side note is I have everything in bridge mode, as it’s all hard-wired, this removes some of the functions within the app such as device prioritisation/management, but this is not an important issue for me. I was until recently using a similar system but with Apple AirPort Extreme/Time Capsules, but had started to find that these routers were struggling with the ever increasing amount of smart devices on our network, these have proved to be a huge upgrade, not surprising though as Apple’s routers are getting fairly long in the tooth now, almost 8 years old. I still use an Apple Time Capsule hard-wired via Ethernet as a backup device. The speed and coverage this system offers is immense, as you can see from the attached Speedtest, on my iPhone 11 Pro with WiFi 6, I’m getting almost 900mbps, which is about as good as you can expect over a 1Gbps connection.
Overall, I couldn’t be happier with this system, yes the buy-in cost is high, but the returns are phenomenal, especially with multiple users working from home now, every user is pretty much guaranteed 5-600mbps wherever they are in my house (~4000sq/ft) even on WiFi 5 (AX) devices, not to mention the future-proofing that these routers provide. Setup is very straightforward using the Linksys app, no complaints there, installation takes around 5 mins per node.
If you’re in any doubt about this system, go for it, you will not be disappointed.
