I had been eyeing a Manduka mat for a while but was rather apprehensive about it being slippery. I tried it first without the salt sprinkle to make sure that it felt okay, in case I wanted to return it immediately. It was slippery but not overly and I did like the thickness on my knees. I then SCRUBBED the whole mat with seasalt for good 15 to 20 minutes and hung it out in the sun for a day. I am keeping it!

There is something really important to point out, which has not been mentioned yet:

Reviewies are saying “I do yoga every day and it took me so and so many months until it stopped being slippery”. However, what is not mentioned is the fact that people do different amounts of yoga every day.

I have this mat for 2 months now and do about 30 mins of yoga each day. It worked like a charm. I do need to note that I added the salt as well, clean it daily and make sure to really rub off the old sweat and possible skin. If you are fit and serious about yoga there is no better mat to buy. Simple as that.

Very good mat. Non slip, stable, comfortable and soft. Thick enough to provide the required comfort and support. Just lovely.

    Very happy with this product.
It is very soft, but firm at the same time. I bought the long version which is a game changer, much better, for a man, than the usual length. It is a bit heavy, certainly not for travelling. It sticks on carpets and hard floors very well. It does not move at all.

Best yoga mat I have had , non slippy, and so comfortable

Love this mat ! Needs breaking in but I can tell already (after 3 uses) will be amazing… the pressure on my wrists is better , I don’t feel pain at all after long periods on them , and don’t need anything to pad my knees !
Haven’t done the salt scrub as suggested but read a lot of reviews from yoga teachers and they haven’t either as usage will make it less slippery… slightly slippy to start but I can tell that this is not going to last .

I have a cheaper mat which is good but this is in a different class. Quality from start to finish !

I love the color. I like the thickness. Grip is good. It’s a little bit heavy. So, I don’t want to carry this to far away, but luckily the yoga studio I go to is a few minutes walk.

Excellent product, bit heavy though so not so portable. Nevertheless, excellent. It takes a whole le to break in but after that no need for another mat probably ever.

So glad I splashed out on this. Yes it’s expensive, but the quality is superb. And it’s my favourite colour! Did the salting thing as recommended and I don’t slip at all unless I’m a bit sweaty!!!

There’s a reason to call ”pro mat” and it really is! It’s the most expensive yoga mat I’ve bought but well worth every extra money, the quality makes feel like I can use it for the rest of my life, I have no more excuse for not stay exercised.

Golden Review Award: 38 From Our UsersI researched, researched and researched the Manduka Pro Mat. Trying to find a down to Earth person’s view and not a professionals or influencers’ ,Yoga Company or Instructors view in addition to the official views. Consistently they warned of potential “slippiness” and having to salt the surface. Eventually I bit the expensive bullet and went for it. And to test it I went on a six mile run prior to unwrapping it. Trust me I’d built up a sweat. And you know what, it wasn’t slippy at all really. I kept an eye on my hands in downward facing dog and at most, as the 6mm mat compressed under the palm heel of your hand there is a couple of mm, yes millimetres, of movement (or perception of movement) and then that’s it your stuck. Other than that : Yes the mat is 6mm, yes it is wider and I went for the longer 85″ one, it feels firm underfoot (which is useful for tree/balance poses and the like). I did see a nice video that pointed out that the Eko Manduka was a bit more “squishy” but smelt a lot more if comfort is your thing but this firm 6mm Manduka Pro does take the edge off the Frog pose knee issue. The 115 price tag though is what loses it the one star. Had it been 85 – 95 I would be recommending it left right and centre. But if like me you’ve suddenly found that your cheap mat was disintegrating and that you are suddenly doing a hell of a lot more Yoga and on a mission to improve your martial arts ability then do the research, have a big think and take a deep breath.

Really wasn’t sure if I should spend the money on this, but after previously owning the Eko Lite Manduka mat, I am pleased to report this one is worth the further investment!! It’s tacky/comfy and came in great condition. I did use the salt overnight as the packaging suggests!

    Thanks for a great product!

I feel very grateful to own this mat and have the opportunity to grow my practise with it. I followed the breaking in instructions and the mat is a dream. Just give it some elbow grease and all will be given back. I thought I’d write this as I almost went for a different mat having read about the slipping. So I am just glad I followed my heart. Love Love

Been using for a while now. As a sweaty boy, I struggle with grip on this mat, even though I treated with sea salt as suggested. Not too bothered, as I’m happy to use hand chalk and I’m pretty sure that it’ll break-in eventually. Good solid mat for yoga.

Excellent mat. I bought this on the advice of an online personal trainer I use called Sydney Cummings. She does high intensity training and I wanted a mat that would cope with that and would not moved as I jumped about. By far the best mat I have used. This would be suitable for hiit and for yoga both. I’d definitely recommend it.

This mat exceeded my expectations! I had a cheap one before and wasn’t really sure this was worth 5x the price, fortunately it is. It has a really nice grippy texture which has got better as I used it (not ideal for hot yoga or very sweaty hands tho). It’s very thick and I find my sessions much more comfortable, the only downside is the weight – I’ll only be using it at home so not an issue but I wouldn’t want to carry long distances. Can see this lasting a lifetime!

Great mat for firmness and durability. I had wrecked two mats already. Large chunks coming off. A mat for life appealed so invested in the Pro. Treated the pro to a salt clean as recommended and the slippyness went . In use its stable, durable but on the downside it’s heavy and not as comfortable as my previous mat. So take your own decision. At the discounted price of black- 64 I would buy again just for the durability. My wife loves it as well but finds it difficult to pack away and carry. So check you are happy and know it suits you .

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersWhen it first arrived it felt OK, but when your hands started to get a bit sweaty, the rubber surface became very slippery. Loved the comfortable feel, but was about to send it back, then decided to look on YouTube for any comments and found lots of video’s (including from Manduka) talking about having to break it in, by not only using it but doing a salt rub treatment to help speed things up. Well have tried this and it is much improved, there is still some break-in required, but now have a good feeling that it is going to work, as a good “sticky” feeling is starting to come through. After more use, I’ll update this review.
The only other negative point is my wife finds it very heavy to carry to the gym, it will end up costing me the price of a shoulder carry bag in the coming weeks.
Positives. Very good length (216 cm), very luxurious feel and feels like it will last the test of time.
Negatives. Very expensive, quite heavy and very slippery when new, having to rub course salt into it and leaving it in full sun for 24 hours seems like a lot of effort for a Yoga mat in this price range.

I have used it and it is amazing, had a cheap one before this and you can definitely tell the difference, great grip whilst doing the positions, would definitely recommend this mat. Also great thickness and good on the knees.

I bought this mat as a gift for my husband who just started having yoga classes. He’s the kind of person who always looks for great quality products that will last for a long time (if not forever!), so he wanted a high quality mat. We chose this one and he is extremely happy with our choice. Couldn’t recommend enough!

Made more a difference than I imagined over my previous cheap mat. It feels like a very solid platform on which to practice, but also offers a very comfortable layer. My kneed and feet have benefitted, its made the difference between doing and not doing some moves.

What a large box this mat arrived in !!!
The mat is heaver that I expected but gives me an extra work out by carrying it to yoga.
It is excellent , at first slippery but you do have to put sea salt over it. Now it is excellent and I don’t regret paying out for the larger size even though I am only 5’4′.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is the third one I have ordered for my students as I consider it the best mat available for anyone who needs a mat for daily use. My own one is now three years old and as good now as it was when I bought it after using everyday.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersWas recommended this mat over other professional yoga mats by my very skilled and advanced yoga teacher. She had tried other more expensive brands, and wasn’t impressed with them. As said by other people mat was a little slippy at first, the recommended sea salt helps, there seems to be some sort of coating on the surface which disappears over time and with use, it’s taken 2 weeks for mine to bed in with use 3 times a week.
Now it has fantastic grip and the comfort is brilliant. I no longer need 2 mats and hardly need to use my foam knee pads. I might not be the best at yoga but this mat helps me achieve the next level, it is not too thick like some, but just perfect to feel the ground for balances.
Down sides as said by other reviews it needs bedding in from new, and little bit heavy if u travel far carrying it.
Highly recommended by my yoga teacher and now myself.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersI know it sounds very amateurish to blame a mat for stuff we cannot do, but then, the three practices I’ve had with this mat were far superior to the ones I had with my old travel manduka or the cheap mats from the studio, as if it enabled me to sink deeper in a pose, or perform my transitions with more support (I’m an intermediate to experienced practitioner, and I practice yoga daily). This mat is absolutely perfect, it has a good balance between cushioning and stability/floor presence; and of great grip but allowing you to slide when you need to. I’m very happy with this purchase, and the colour is beautiful and relaxing: I really do hope it lasts for life, as promised.

I read a lot of comments on the mat being heavy — this is true, but think about the effort of carrying it around as part of your practice! — and slippery. To the second comment, it is VERY IMPORTANT to follow the breaking in instructions and giving it a salt scrub before the first use, and also knowing that, like every professional equipment (ballet shoes, sports gloves, martial arts protection, etc.), this mat requires preparation, care, and it will adapt to you with the constant use. I would not recommend this for people starting yoga now, or for people who are not deeply committed to their practice.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersHaving had a cheap yoga mat most of my life I had no idea how big the market was for an upgrade. I was a bit overwhelmed with it all. Just google yoga mat and see what comes up. So hopefully this helps someone save some time. Here’s what I’ve found to be true- 1. it does not have a chemical smell 2. it is a bit slippery in the beginning but true to what the manufacturer states, it goes away 3. 71″ is a great size for me and 6ft1 4. the overall feeling is of quality and durability. I do yoga everyday and it feels like this mat is going to go the distance with my practice. Highly recommended.

My mat arrived late due to customs and an extra charge was levied. The mat is great but taking time to remove the coating which makes it slippy to use.

I’v got it even erlier then expected. It’s very good mat, not slippery, I didnt put any salt as it was advised. Before I had a superlight mat for traveling, I liked it very much, but I had a mistake with cleaning it -applied regular cemical for bath cleaning and now the mat bacame sticky. Maybe there is a way to fix it?

This is well worth the money. No slipping, lots of support, but not springy like the usual sticky mats. If you can afford this & you have a regular practice, this is a treat.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersYes, it is going to be slippery at the beginning, but after a week and a half, it is absolutely brilliant!

I live in a flat so I just put the mat in my living room, where I normally practice. I rubbed it with coarse sea salt and left it for about 12 hours (I know the official website says 24 hours, but I was too impatient), after that I splashed some water and rubbed it again with a damp cloth. I used a dry cloth to wipe it out again, and any remaining moisture dried up pretty quickly on its own.

My feet and palms often get sweaty, so I quickly started slipping, especially in Downward Dog. In those cases, I would simply rub my palms and feet against the mat, until dry. I always wipe it out with some water and a cloth after usage. After a week and a half of practicing 2-3 times a day I no longer slide in Downward Dog, and I’m really enjoying using it! Everything about the thickness, high quality of material and cushioning has already been said, so I have nothing else to add. Highly recommended!

Best mat ever have, excellent grip, good thickness but hope it gets a little bit softer with time because it’s a bit too hard right now. It’s heavy but once I’ve tried this I don’t want to use any other mat anymore so have been carrying it to classes. Used sea salt to break it in as suggested. So pleased to have found this mat!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is actually my second black mat pro, not because there is anything wrong with the mat, but because I originally bought the 85″ one that is just too long for the class I now practice in, and I’m so happy with the mat so bought the standard size one.
I can highly recommend the mat from +12 months use of the long one (exactly the same in every way apart from length) but would say make sure you choose the right size.
To get the grip up quicker do the salt scrub, use the manduka mat restore spray and use it for practise, sit on it, lie on it.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersReally pleased with the Matt I can now practice yoga without having to think about what my matts doing as it stays exactly where I put it. I rubbed rock climbers chalk over the Matt to deal with the slippyness that people talk about and it as being grippy from the first session. My only real issue is that it doesn’t lay flat when folded for shoulder stand but given the comfort and stability it offers for all the other poses its a small draw back and hopefully in time it will setle abit. Defanatly worth the money.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersNot noticeably heavier than the so much thinner and so much less sturdier Tree Mat; definitely sturdy (doesn’t bend or move when it’s between you and the floor, so you never need to stop to flatten or rearrange it; doesn’t stretch at all when you are in long low warrior poses, etc). It’s not slippery!, the best mat I’ve tried for down dog…
So solid and reliable, but with great cushioning; extremely comfortable for the knees…
Ideal. Wouldn’t want to use any other mat anymore.
It smells of something artificial, but it’s not too strong. Easy to keep clean.
Extremely reliable for head and handstands (on other mats, these were scary!).
Nothing not to like in it!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI love my mat. It did not smell too bad and in no way triggered my asthma, something I was worried about from reviews. Just let it lie open and it will clear up soon. It feels very firm to stand on and my husband thought it was rock hard, he does not use yoga mats of any kind, so has no comparison to go by. However, when I lie on my side (hips) or kneel with the knee behind me I have no pain and can perform poses without discomfort for the first time ever! I can do upward dog without the tops of my feet / toes hurting. So highly recommended. I have actually been doing jumps as well which I normally avoid due to lack of mat stability. This mat will not budge.
Yes, the mat was slippery when new, I scrubbed away at it with sea salt for half an hour wearing thick gloves and with good TV in the background. It has been much better and is softening up with every use. I use a folded up equa mat towel that I pull down when I start to sweat/experience slipperiness and it seems less needed with every practice. I was thinking of buying a prolite in the future for ease of travel but right now I do not want to miss this mat ever again. It is that good. Go for it, you might love it like me or else it should sell well on ebay as a used product. 🙂
    Happy Practising!

This must be my 6th yoga mat but this one has a lifetime guarantee and that cannot be scoffed at.
I’ve paid approx 30 for each mat and each has never past two years at 3 classes a week so 75 for a lifetime – and I hope to live and be doing yoga for another 40 years means it works out very inexpensive
It does all the things it says on the packet. Sturdy, not slippy and has good eco credentials – the main one being that this may be the only one you’ll own 🙂
