We have purchased four of these over the last 7 years (for 4 bedrooms). There are fancier models that have a greater variety of sounds out there, but this one simple does the job without all the fuss. Yes, it is a bit pricy, but they are build to last.

Had a similar marpac dohm for many years which was excellent but wanted to upgrade to this newer version. Two volume levels and twist sides to adjust sounds. If I stay away from home this comes with me ,sturdy and never fails to block out unwanted noise from traffic or neighbours.

The machine would benefit with having volume control, as it is quite noisy. I also think a timer switch would be an advantage too. Have resorted to my original white noise machine until I find something better. Thank you.

I have used a Marpac Dohm White Noise Maker all over the world. I’ve had one when I lived in the US and now I have one here in the UK. We even have a different model from Marpac sitting in our 2-year-old son’s room.

I have tinnitus from my time in the military, so in very silent situations I can hear a high pitch ringing. This machine helps block out that sound. It can also help drown out small amounts of outside noises. Maybe birds, conversations in another room, the neighbors, etc.

Saying this, you have to be realistic. It’s not a miracle machine. For example, if your partner snores really loudly 2 feet away from you, it is very unlikely that this machine will solve your problems. But for the minor annoying noises that go on in the middle of the night, this machine is great and I highly recommend it.

FIRST: check the price on yogasleep’s official website, it’s considerably cheaper at the time of writing this.

I really like this product. I have noisy neighbours, and have been woken up so many times… this has allowed me to get some uninterrupted nights at last. It sounds counterintuitive, to have a noise machine to help you sleep. But it works! It’s very soothing.

The one flaw is that the speed option does nothing, it is exactly the same intensity on both settings. I saw someone comment that this is due to the electricity voltage in the UK (it’s manufactured in the USA, so they might be correct). However, don’t worry about that. I’ve had it on the quietest setting (vents as closed as possible), approx 1m from my head, and it’s been fine. If you have it further away just open the vents to make it louder.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFirst of all I will say I am lucky that my neighbour is not that loud, I use this to drown out his TV and occasional banging around his house and my sleep is much better, I wake up twice in the night on average with this, and before that it was maybe 5 or 6 times. I haven’t felt this well rested in a long time.

I place it on a cushion because I found that putting it on a hard surface such as a wood table caused unwanted low-frequency vibrations for me.

I have had nightmare neighbours before who stomped and banged stuff so loud that the bass would be felt in your ribcage, If you are so unlucky to have similar neighbours, I wouldn’t count on this device stopping those kinds of noises but I was surprised how loud this thing is, I put it in the quietest possible configuration because that is more than enough for me.

Before the Dohm I used a standard desk fan and it didn’t do much to mask noises, the Dohm is much louder than the average desk fan too and the noise from the dohm is much more relaxing.

Overall this has been a great purchase as my neighbour is only “mildly” noisy. If you have extremely noisy neighbours I would say don’t expect a miracle from this device but I still expect this device would provide some benefit.

If you’re looking for a good, real fan noise for white noise then I can’t big this one up enough.

I always used to have an air filter running at night it helped me sleep when I was a kid.

Looking into white noise helped me understand why, and when the filter broke (and my sleeping then got worse!), after a few years I decided to try white noise again.

It had been white noise I’d been sleeping to for most of my life anyways!

I bought this to substitute it, half expecting I would have to buy a new air filter to make a good fan noise to satisfy what I was used too. I didn’t! The noise from this is soft, consistent and calming. I knew it had to be a mechanical generated sound from a fan to be the right white noise for me (speakers just aren’t the same, radio static almost works but I’m used to a fan) and this really delivers. It sits in the same spot my air filter used too. My little sleep machine.

Marpac Dohm Classic White Noise Sound Machine with UK Plug, White – I would thoroughly recommend this sound machine if you are having problems sleeping due to outside noise. It has ‘done the trick’ for me and I am so glad I bought it. One thing I did expect to be better was the volume control as there is very little difference between the two levels on my machine. However, I am now very grateful to be able to sleep through any exterior noise.

The motor makes a humming noise which is louder than the pink noise, due to the vibration if situated on a solid flat surface such as a bedside table. I solved the problem by placing it on the carpet, with a mouse mat under it to avoid overheating. The hum is nearly eliminated. Apart from that problem it is a very satisfactory product. It seems to help me sleep and doesn’t disturb my wife.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWell what can I say apart from stop reading reviews and just buy one. Trust me, this works. Don’t know how, but it just does. I endured the misery of not being able to sleep for weeks, every tiny noise in the house would keep me awake including any noise my wife made. Then I found this and it instantly solved the problem!! Another bonus was that my wife who has suffered with insomnia for years until she regarded it as normal, was also cured!! This is by far and away the best 40 I’ve ever spent. Just buy one and give it a try. You won’t regret it.

Many friends of mine in the US have these as noise machines to help their little ones sleep. We needed a new one for our 2nd, and so we went for this product. It is a great noise machine, however, because it is adapted to use in the UK, the noise difference between “high” and “low” is not noticeable. For us, the volume wasn’t high enough so I raised this with the teams customer service and they were absolutely brilliant. Very quick response and were able to send me the Whish, which has much more noticeable volume control. Very appreciative of this.. highly recommend purchasing from this company – but be sure to choose the right machine, depending on your needs.

Bought this for two reasons; firstly I live on a noisy street so wanted the white noise to block outside noise at night and secondly to sooth my newborn baby to sleep. We had been using an app in my iPad but this was wearing my iPad battery down every night and I felt it was a waste of my iPads capabilities; I wanted the option of using my iPad while baby napped. When I initially turned in the Maroac Dohm I was a bit concerned that it wouldn’t be loud e Pugh- however after a week of use, i’ve Found the volume to be sufficient to block in street noise. The sound is also very soothing and baby seems to like it. I have also con very accustomed to sleeping with white noise and find it very relaxing. The Marpac Dohm seems to be sturdy and well made and I like how simplistic the design is. Overall i’m Very happy so far.

This was a present for my boyfriend, who has a small bedroom. The Dohm is a brilliant producer of white noise. He is very very pleased with it. The only small comment is that he is having to muffle it, as it is a bit too loud for his room. Which shows it is built for the job, but perhaps the volume could be made to decrease just a little more, for people who have to suffer urban noise, but in a small space.
We both love the design of the product, and, funnily enough, we both agreed that the beautiful graphics, choice of silken cardboard, and overall design of the box, is the most innovative and eye catching of any electronics product we’ve seen. It is even more eye catching than many luxury beauty product packs. It makes you feel confidence and trust in the product, if the packaging is both beautiful and robust and we’re happy to say, this confidence is well founded.

This is my third Dohm in about 13 years. I am addicted and can’t sleep without them. My first was bought in America when I lived in NYC – it kept me sane and allowed me to sleep at night. Second was when I moved to the UK so had to get one wired for UK electrical systems. That one sadly got clogged because we weren’t careful while removing wallpaper and sanding so we got a new one. Lesson learned.

They work so much better than digital apps! It’s just a fan inside a plastic shell with holes for the air to move through: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It’s so effective, we lovingly call ours the “Coma machine”.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersSo my 4 year old has always been an awful sleeper, but this year takes the biscuit. He wakes somewhere between 4 and 5 am. This is for him (along with complete blackout blinds, but this is not about them). The unit is well built, about the size of a medium bowl. The pitch is regulated by rotating either the side or the top. There is a fan on the inside so this is a purely mechanically generates sound. The volume has two settings, both quite loud, so a whole room is well catered to. Initially there’s a plasticky smell, but that’s subsiding now after running for a solid day. The first night, the child slept an extra hour so that’s success in my books. The next morning I had an opportunity to snooze near it for an hour: it blocked the sounds of the kids bickering very well!
Update: just purchase a second one for the older child and he says it’s amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our Usersok, I don’t know how it works but it does. when I say I don’t know how it works, I understand that its no more than a small fan in a plastic dome,
But my wife and I have had the best nights sleep since purchasing. it kills background traffic noise, reduces snoring and breathing noises. and other night time noises like heating turning on. I have mine on the bedside table on the first speed setting with all the vents open.
Once you have got your head round that to get a good nights sleep you need to introduce noise into the room, which doesn’t seem to make any sense, and understand that it will take a few nights to get use to it. My wife thought it was ridicules when she first saw it. But she loves it now. I take it with me when I travel to. downside it is a bit ugly looks like a siren off the wall of a 1970s building, however it works and I love it.

After some research, this was the product that seemed to fit our needs – we needed to drown out neighbour noise, and occasional street noise. It is expensive for what it is, so I initially bought one from the Warehouse that was “as new”, thinking that I’d live with damaged packaging… However, when it arrived it was clearly not working as intended with something loose inside causing an occasional metal-grating sound, and the speed varied of its own accord! Amazon accepted it back and I bought one full price. I had seen a video review of one so I knew what it should sound like, and for me, I can clearly discern the two speeds. I think if you cannot tell the difference then your product is faulty like my “as new” one (which actually did work in the sense of just switching on and making a noise). It took a day for my partner, who is the noise sensitive one, to adjust to it.

We purchased the Dohm noise machine to help reduce the noise of our neighbours yappy dog. Despite wearing ear plugs and moving rooms, we could still here it barking in the morning.

After doing a lot of research (including considering moving, sound deadening, adding interior walls etc) we settled on the Dohm.

With much anticipation we placed the device near the adjoining wall and turned it on. It makes a whooshing sort of sound that quickly fades in to the background.

After a few nights of having the Dohm on we were both sleeping as though we were in complete silence. Lie ins at the weekend were possible again as was an undisturbed nights sleep.

I would rate this five stars however, I feel the cost (can you out a price on sleep?) is rather steep and the fan only has one speed.

In summary, if you suffer from noisy neighbours, yappy dogs, road noise etc, then this really could be your solution.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI bought Marpac to block noises mainly coming from inconsiderate neighbours… they are loud talkers in general, but also fight a lot, and often turn their music up. When I first tried Marpac, I thought it was going to be ineffective, as the level of noise it generates is much lower than a room fan, which is what I used before. However; I’m glad I invested into it, as it really blocks almost completely all types of shouting and screaming from neigbours. It blocks loud music too, except for the bass. It also overcomes street noises, sirens, motorcycles, cars parking and people talking on the street.
My baby naps through it, as well as sleeps through it at night.
As other reviewers said it, it should work on two speed, but it really only differs slightly; although in my experience, as I got used to it, I can increasingly hear the difference.
Downside to it, while it blocks noises coming from outside, it doesn’t help with a snoring partner, at no level. Also, while it doesn’t bother me or my baby, my husband hates the sound of it.
Having said that I would definitely recommend it others with noisy neighbours and streets.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersAfter reading lots of reviews I decided to buy one of these for my daughter who had just started university and was having real problems sleeping due to the noisy nature of her halls of residence. Having to get up for 9AM lectures when the revellers are still partying at 4AM was not much fun and I was concerned she would get run down and ill! She got the dohm, and it was fantastic. It does sound a bit like a fan, and has a soothing effect as it nullifies background noise. I was having difficulty sleeping as my husband can be a bit snorey and I’m a light sleeper and it was starting to drive me mad. My daughter kept saying get a dohm mum, but I felt it was a bit of an extravagance, but when it got to the point I was heading for the spare room after an hour or two of getting wound up by the noise, I thought I’d get one. We have both slept so much better with the dohm, probably a marriage saver! And to add to my recommendation, I have bought another one for my eldest daughter who is in her final year at university, sharing a house with five others, who are all on different body clocks, she says with the curtains drawn and the dohm on she can sleep through whatever noise is going on in the house. So this review may sound too good to be true, but it is completely genuine, and I have been recommending the dohm to friends and family, and in fact recommended it to a young girl I met at a drinks party the other night, who’s recently moved into a noisy London flat. So perhaps it doesn’t work for everyone, amongst the dozens of reviews I read there were a few who weren’t happy, but I have to say it has been positively life changing for my family. We all function better with a good nights sleep and its definitely really helped all of us.

This white noise machine is wonderful for all sorts of reasons. I’ve used one since I was a baby so if I’m traveling everywhere sounds like home. If your in a dorm it can get a bit loud it can help cancel out some of the noise as you try and study or sleep. I bought this one because the one I brought on the tirp I didn’t have the right Adapter for the UK and it started to smoke and we doused it with water and left it in there. I wonder what the made thought? It works so well I bought another one for the rest of my trip so I’ve got a British one now. and now problems It’s also great for children or babies for nap time helps keep them focused on the sound and for kids the same way. That way nap time might be a bit easier.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersYou would imagine that life in a Swiss village in the Alps would be peaceful and tranquil…wrong. I have to live with a cacophony of not only noisy neighbours’kids and general traffic noise but hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, car radios, car doors slamming, construction work noise opposite from me, church bells very close, cow bells, brass bands practising, military jets training overhead, helicopters delivering and rescuing, trucks starting at 5am, tractors and cat fights . This Sound Conditioner has put a stop to all that! Oh joy! Wonderful !. Originally I tried putting the radio on between stations…worked well but after about 4 months it wouldn’t work anymore and turned into a high pitch scream.
I have only tried the lowest setting so far and it works very very well. So if my cacophony gets louder anytime..I have action in reserve.
Here the last person hasn’t rolled in til 2am..so I get woken if I try to sleep before that..and as I said..5am it starts all over again…and I am not on a main road. 3 hours sleep a night is not enough and I really need this machine. Excellent buy. Fully recommend.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMy wife and I recently had our sleep badly disturbed because our next door neighbour decided to let their boys and all their friends have a sleepover in a tent in their garden. The noise, which consisted of continual shouting and screeching, started at 3 pm in the afternoon and went on all through the night without ceasing. The high point was when they started playing football at five in the morning and didn’t stop until breakfast was served some hours later by their apparently deaf parents. The only way we managed to get a couple of hours sleep was by drowning out the noise with a small dehumidifier, which worked quite well.
Working on the basis that this was a one off event and wishing to cut the family some slack on this occasion only, I decided not to have a friendly discussion with the parents but also hedge my bets by sourcing a machine that generates white noise in case history ever decides to repeat itself.
Following some research, which included watching several YouTube reviews, the Marpac Dohm stood above the competition because it is reasonably priced and does not include complex digital technology with a multitude of confusing sound options.
The order arrived within a couple of days and I was impressed with the build-quality of the device, which has been around for several decades as I understand it. Despite generating quite a loud noise, which I measured at 55 DB from a one metre distance, the sound is very soothing and pitch can be varied by rotating the casing. Whilst I have not had occasion to put the Dohm to the test at night, I can confirm it blocks out all external daytime sounds including children screaming, cars and so on. I am certain that if next door does decide to have another of their sleepovers, the Dohm will drown out the kids so that I can have a reasonable nights sleep and then approach the parents in a more civilised frame of mind.
Two final points; 1) I know that white noise technology works from experience of leaving on the individual room air conditioning system through the night at a hotel I regularly frequent. 2) Although sold with a dual switch, the fan within the Dohm that I was sold runs at the same speed on both settings otherwise I would have given it five stars.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersThis is a great little gadget for dealing with airbourne noise. I seriously doubt it would be any good for impact noise, but I just wanted to drown out some traffic noise and my downstairs neighbours TV and it has done exactly what I wanted it to.
I keep it on during evenings for several hours but don’t tend to keep it on overnight as things are quieter then. But it seems fairly robust so i’m sure it can handle overnight use. It’s quite small so easy to hide as its not the prettiest thing in the world. The cable is fairly long and ugly but for me they are quite minor issues. I will agree that it is just a fan in a box so does seem a bit pricey for what it is, but the design is great and its made my flat seem more peaceful so its worth it from that point of view. There are two speeds but I find the slower setting is fine for my use. You can also spin the top and sides to get the right volume/tone for you, so its quite versatile.
I’ve had mine for a month now and so far no issues. Fingers crossed its of good enough quality to last me a while. But i’d still get another one if it broke.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersIt’s a nice bit of kit,
I would say it does a better job of creating a soothing relaxing sound than actually drowning out background noise.
I live in a city center and trying to get a good nights’ sleep for work in the morning used to be problematic when the little boy racer morons are out with their cars designed to case annoyance to everyone around them. This little device doesn’t drown that out but it does give your ears something to focus on.
I find the sound of a fan/air/wind very soothing and this is what it reminds me of.
Been using mine for quite a while and like it a lot.

I am happy with this product, but I had to return the first unit I received, which had a shrill rattling noise when turned on, a bit like a fridge. The replacement unit didn’t have this problem and is very effective. I don’t know whether the unit was damaged in transit, or whether this is a quality control issue, but it’s worth being aware of if you have problems with a unit. There are a series of apertures that can be moved to alter the noise the unit makes. My brother-in-law had recommended this device. It is an effective way of neutralising distracting noise.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersWe are really happy with this machine. Our baby has been a terrible sleeper since birth, and over a hot spell we put a fan in her room, and she slept all night!! so we realised she needs ‘white noise’ in her room. This has transformed her sleeping habits. so much so that she self-settles. I would give this product 5 stars, but it is quite heavy. Not particularly large but it is cumbersome. it would be great if it could be battery operated too, for those times when you are away.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBought this after 6 years of putting up with neighbours who work shifts and let their 2 toddlers stay up half the night while they’re up. I was sceptical at first, but I must say the sound conditioner does an excellent job. It completely drowns out all the neighbour’s talking / children playing – finally I can get a decent night’s sleep at last! It does take a little getting used to, at first I wasn’t sure if I would be able to sleep with this thing whirring away in the background. But, I stuck with it and after about a week or so, my brain has accepted it as background noise. It is very effective at masking ‘talking level’ noise – even quite loud conversation. I don’t know how effective it is versus music or other noises because that’s not something I’m dealing with in my situation. Impact noises like slamming doors or heavy foot steps are only partially masked, but I do find this kind of noise easier to ignore now. Minus points for this item: expense – nearly 60 is very pricey for what it is. The unit has a switch with 2 settings, but there’s no appreciable difference in sound quality / volume between them. And, finally, there isn’t any timer cut-off feature (for 60 you’d expect something like that). On the whole, despite these small problems, I’m satisfied with this product and would recommend it to anyone with noisy neighbours.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI would agree that it’s the best sound conditioner/sleep aid that is around at the moment. I live close to the road and I can always hear cars and other noises. We moved to a flat on the ground floor and I’m not used to sleeping on the ground floor so I found I was getting paranoid about every little noise I heard. This product does block out the noises and I can’t hear the traffic so it’s very good. I would agree with other users that it does sound a little artificial, I would prefer it if it sounded more like wind. When you first use it it will smell of burning plastic for a few days but that smell has now gone. I feel I can hear the mechanics of the machine sometimes than the white noise but it’s still effective at getting me to sleep. It’s a very cool device and it’s clever how you can move it to make different levels of white noise. There is pretty much no difference between the low switch and the high switch. They sound exactly the same in loudness to me. The maximum sound is still not extremely loud but I think it would be effective for most people. At the loudest setting I can still hear my husband talking to people on the computer in the next room. When we are both in bed though I can’t hear anything outside the room and it gets me to sleep a lot quicker. I haven’t woke up during the night like I did before, I used to wake up 2-3 times a night due to the slightest little noise. I now sleep through the night so my days are better. I would recommend it as the best sleep aid out there.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersIn utilitarian terms this Marpac Dohm DS Dual Speed Sound Conditioner works quite well and will aid a good sleep. This is a dual speed version, plus, you can adjust the pitch of the white noise output by rotating the outside of the cover. In the box you get the sound conditioner and brief instructions although primitive looking it is substantially made. There is only one control an on/off switch which also enables you to select the speed.

The acid test is that this sound conditioner seems to give my girlfriend a much better sleep than she is used to. She finds the Marpac Dohm DS soothing so, arguably, primitive looking or not, it achieves what it sets out to do. The unit also has the effect of negating traffic and other sounds during the night – it doesn’t mask them completely but tends to distract you from them as you focus more on the white noise that it generates. The white noise is akin to the sound of an electric fan or similar and you can alter the characteristics a bit by twisting the cover which changes the airflow, or by using the switch to alter the speed.

This sound conditioner (which hails from the US) looks like something from the 1950’s, has a crude control system, and is an eyesore in a modern dcor. However, the most important thing is that it seems to work and facilitates a relaxing sleep, I suppose that’s the criteria by which it should be judged!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis more or less does what it says on the tin. It makes a sufficient “whooshing” sound that we are no longer disturbed by voices through walls. It’s worth noting that it works particularly well at drowning out voices, but will not help you if banging etc is more of a problem.

There are a couple of non-fatal shortcomings:
    * It’s not quite a white noise: you can hear the a louder frequency from the drone of the motor
    * It’s fairly loud, and can’t be made quieter. For drowning out only moderate noise, this is overkill. Wish it could be made quieter.

It took a few nights to adjust to sleeping with it. Now, I find that I wake in the morning, initially thinking I’m in silence, and only when I reach full consciousness do I realise that the white noise generator is on. I would love if this device came with a timer, so that it would switch off in the wee hours and I wouldn’t wake up to it.

I’ve been pretty pleased with this item. I agree with other customers that the difference between the 2 levels of sound is not much (because it is American), but by swivelling the top and bottom things, different depths of sound and strength occur. I use it almost every night. I never got used to sleeping with it in the same room though, although I sometimes do have it in the room. I tend to use it in an adjacent room, or in different places around the house. It seems to stop dreadful resonant echoes that really annoy me at night. It also has some noise cancellation ability with electronic noise from outside. It is nicely built, well made. It can get a little warm if left on all night. It can drown out or dissipate fridge noises too. Its not exactly like a fan noise, but similar.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe first thing I did when I received this was cracked it open to look inside, partly because I was curious, partly because it wasn’t clipped together properly where someone had obviously opened it before me! Maybe it was a refurb or returned to Amazon.

Anyway, there’s not a lot inside. A small motor with an unusual fan blade, some wiring that I think swaps phases to change the speed, barely makes any difference and a switch. Uber simple and unless the motor has been made by rolls royce (it hasn’t) then it’s hugely overpriced for what it is.

The plastic shell is… well a plastic shell lol. It’s quite basic and I don’t ever change it down from it’s “noisiest” setting.

Of course you’re paying for the R&D and for them to get recognised by various organisations etc.

Although I think it’s hugely overpriced, I do love it. I have very noisy neighbours who love to talk, shout, scream, laugh, take phone calls, let their dogs bark as close to my house as possible. This machine helps me fight against all those noises and get a solid nights sleep.

Although to be honest, I’ve got an old floor fan that makes the similar level and type of noise and consumes the same number of watts, so I could probably have just used that.

At first I wasn’t too sure about this because the sound it produces isn’t exactly like a fan heater, which is what I was hoping for. Regardless of how you adjust it the sound doesn’t have much low frequency content. It’s quite mid-rangey. I guess that’s unsurprising though given the size of the unit. As far as I can tell the 2 speed settings are exactly the same.

It took a couple of weeks to get used to having it on during the night, but now I find it quite pleasant and it does help mask the sounds of London happening outside my window.

In case anyone reading this is wondering, they only do the UK voltage model in beige which is a shame. It looks pretty dated. Black and white models are only available in the US; I checked with the manufacturer.

4 stars instead of 5 because of the pointless dual speed settings and looking like it belongs in an old folk’s home / the 80’s.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersInteresting results with this bit of kit! I’m a hugely light sleeper and struggle with any sort of noise waking me up, so was at my wits end one day and decided to go for it. Basically this has worked up to a point, but obviously it’s not a miracle worker!
I found that after a few weeks of use it definitely helped me to sleep through a lot more background noise, as the idea is not for the device to just drown out the noise, but train your brain to adjust to it instead. So, whenever there’s noise from a higher frequency, I can now seem to sleep through it. The drawback however is that it hasn’t helped with lower frequencies (i.e. anything with bass), which was the main issue from a ridiculously inconsiderate flatmate who walks (I mean stomps) around as if he’s made of steel and slams doors, cupboards etc and bellows at his friends while gaming online to the early hours – thus why I say it’s not a miracle worker! Otherwise, I personally think it’s worth the investment for the sake of getting a more consistent night of well-deserved sleep!

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis amazing machine has literally given me my life back. I recently moved to a very noise area of a city centre and have never lived on a busy street before. I took the apartment (and signed a 1 year lease) because I figured I would quickly get used to the noise (traffic all night). Fast forward 2 months and I was not human anymore. I usually only slept 1 relatively full night per week out of pure exhaustion and necessity. I was never able to block out the traffic. This sound conditioner (I prefer to call it a white noise machine) was recommended to me by a friend and has saved my life – I can actually SLEEP when it is on. I do wish it was a tiny bit louder because I can still hear the traffic but it is loud enough that I can focus on this noise instead and have slept wonderfully since I got it. I cannot recommend it enough.

A noisy pub opening 7 metres from my bedroom window a year ago meant serious loss of sleep and health problems. No amount of double glazing blocks the noise from early morning to early next morning so I was becoming desperate. This simple little device produces a consistent low hum, something like the noise of a fan, that masks other noise reasonably effectively and is a real aid to sleep or concentration once you are used to it Like many other reviewers, the difference between high and low settings is imperceptible but no matter. It took about a week to acclimatise to the noise of the device itself but now I wouldn’t be without it.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersPrior to buying this I had become addicted to using my fan as a white noise generator, but since it was getting a bit chilly I bought this instead! It basically is a little fan in a box, so if you like that sort of totally continuous mechanical sound then this would likely work for you. You can vary the sound a little by rotating the side and the top, or by altering the power setting, but they’re not dramatic changes. Before buying it I’d strongly suggest popping over to Youtube and looking at some of the video reviews there, as they demonstrate the sound for you.

Other than that it seems quite well made, is very simple to use, and since it’s only five inches across sits easily on a desk or table. It is quite expensive for what it is really, and I did consider the ones which offer a range of sounds instead, but was a bit worried about getting the “looping” effect which has driven me mad on various apps/downloads/CDs I’ve tried. This does not do that at all so I am happy and would recommend for people wanting totally continuous sound to help them sleep – it doesn’t block out all sounds, but it does block out a great many!

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersA difficult thing to review really. I bought this because I have Tinnitus. I had been using various sounds from videos off Youtube, like a sound of a stream or air conditioner, converted to an mp3 then played through my media player, but was looking for something a bit more portable. At the moment I use my laptop with a seperate speaker plugged in, a pain to lug upstairs when I go to bed, or to stick in a corner when I want to watch TV.

The sound it creates makes my Tinnitus inaudible, which is good, and, for me, anyway, it is probably the perfect level of noise; any lower and I could hear my T, any louder and it would be intrusive. There are lots of video’s on Youtube with people reviewing this item, which can give you an idea of how it sounds.

In regards to people saying there isn’t much difference between the sound options, I disagree. There isn’t a massive difference, but a significant enough difference. In my quietest room, the bedroom, I need the machine on full volume, whereas in the living room, I can have it lower. I assume as my living room is at the front of house.

I don’t think the price is too bad either. To find a machine that makes a noise that isn’t too low or loud is tough, and any extra money spent here is better than spending who knows how long trying to find a suitable Tinnitus masker, in my opinion.

So, a tough thing to review. I am giving it five stars as it does the job I wanted. I also like how the manual reassures you it can be left on all night as it isn’t costly to run. For any Tinnitus sufferers I would give it a try, you can always return it for free, as it is with Amazon, although there may be return costs, sometimes Amazon say they will reimburse you x amount, sometimes it really is free.

Golden Review Award: 58 From Our UsersOur neighbour has ‘issues’ and periodically has a huge blow-out and turns his huge stereo up very loud with a strong bass sound. The music is unlike any I have heard before – it is like an irregular deep throbbing heart beat and actually makes me feel physically sick. We have had expensive sound-proofing put in and that has cut out everything but the horrible throb which vibrates the floors and all the internal walls and even my pillow. I bought this little machine out of desperation so that we could have a conversation in the evening. Before we had this we had to wear sound-proofing headphones to give our nerves a break. Now when our neighbour is having a melt-down and plays his music until five in the morning we put this on. It doesn’t cancel the noise but after it is on somehow your brain can zone out. I have bought two. On very bad nights I put them on two sides of the room, or we can have them on in two different rooms.

The sound it makes it nicely ‘analogue’ unlike the pink or white noise cds I have tried. When I switch it on I instantly feel protected and pacified 🙂 One day I hope noise pollution by neighbours is taken more seriously by the law but until it is these little machines are heaven. Thank you, thank you and thank you again to the inventor, manufacturer and importer!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI dont usually write reviews but had to share my experience with this. We recently moved house and our neighbours are a retired couple and get up at 4:30am! They arnt the quiestest and our walls are thin. Then to add to this our heating is rather loud and would wake me at 6:30am! And even more my husband snores and wakes me up at times.

I wasnt sure what to do, i didnt want ear plugs as have children and didnt like the idea of having ear plugs in and not being able to hear them. I then came across this item and decided to buy one, thought it was expensive but after using it for a month now its the best money ive spent in a long time! I dont hear next door neighbours, dont hear my heating turning on (incouding the pipes creaking) or hear my husband snore! Its amazing!! Its quite loud but its perfect for me, found it strange the first night, but after that no issues at all. I used to dread going to bed but now have no worries at all. I would recommend this to anyone!

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersThis product solved my noise problems! I have problems on all four walls and the ceiling:

    – very low rumbling traffic almost constantly, and a spike of heavy traffic 11pm – 1am which is quite loud. Heavy construction that starts every 8am, usually wakes me up.
    – one roommate who recently bought an Xbox One and plays Battlefield 4 almost constantly, and is really into the voice control mechanism (“XBOX HOME! XBOX NEXT PAGE! XBOX!! XBOX!! XBOX NEXT PAGE!”)
    – another roommate who comes home late and makes inevitable noises, doors, etc.
    – families upstairs and behind my bed whose conflict resolution strategies involve screaming.

So, this is my noisiest apartment to date, and I’ve found it impossible to sleep well on most days, and on the weekend it’s hardly relaxing. With a Marpac my sense of ease is greatly increased. At first when I turned it on it was far too soft, but I’ve realised the intention isn’t to block out noise but rather to give your brain something else to latch onto. If I strain my hearing I can hear the traffic, gunfire, screaming, and doors…but if I just relax, magically, I don’t notice it any more.

In order to sleep I still like to use earplugs, specifically “Ohropax Soft Earplugs”. In combination with a Marpac I get perfect sleep. I agree with others that running a fan would work just as well (I just want a fan noise), but a) you have to have a fan, which if you travel you won’t, and b) a fan necessarily implies cool air, which in winter I certainly don’t want, particularly in poorly insulated bedrooms.

As a bonus I suffer from tinnitus and the Marpac greatly alleviates that as well.

Golden Review Award: 36 From Our UsersThis device has changed my life.
I live in a semi, with neighbours who every so often seem to be throwing each other down stairs (bed included), or possibly knocking 2 rooms into one – hard to be sure which…
Still a bit mystified about how it works, as it doesn’t actually completely drown out the noise, however the noise becomes irrelevant compared to the soothing sound from the unit, so you can just sleep though it.
I used to dread going to bed because of the noise coming from next door, now I just trot off happily upstairs, turn the machine on and go to sleep!
I had experimented with white noise (and other noises e.g. waves) apps on smartphone, but for some reason these just do not work like this device does.
I agree with other reviewers that I cannot tell any difference between the 2 settings, but this is irrelevant in my experience.
If you have any problem at all with noise disturbed sleep buy this!

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersIf you get jolted awake by loud sounds at night, stop what you’re doing and buy this thing. Buy it right now. It’s worth it.

The machine just makes very natural and constant fan/wind sound, but with no air blowing. So, when there’s a passing ambulance or a drunken dumb dumb outside your window, there isn’t a decibel spike. The blowing air sound just drowns it out. I didn’t even realize I was waking up tired from noise at night until I started using this thing. Now I sleep like a baby, and prefer not to sleep without it!

On the UK electrical compatibility: this machine is perfectly UK compatible, and works just as well here as it does in the US. I know because owned one of these things in the US for many years. It was exactly the same brand, same model, just made for the 110v/60Hz electric grid that they have there. The loudest setting may be a tad quieter than it was there, but hardly noticeable. The difference between the two speed settings is also not as great in the UK as it was in the US, although there is still a small difference. It’s probably because the machine was designed in the US, and uses the AC frequency to set the motor speed. But this has absolutely no negative impact on the function or safety. You can still adjust the sound of the white noise by sliding the casing around. You can still adjust the motor speed. And it’s perfectly safe.

Bottom line: it is UK compatible, and produces beautiful constant white noise for a good night’s sleep. Well worth the price.
