Why is my Medela Solo Pump losing suction?
The reasons a breast pump may lose suction vary. There are a few steps that you should take to verify your Solo breast pump. Please read more about this in the section Troubleshooting in our Instructions for use file.
Can I turn my single breast pump into a double?
Solo is a single electric breast pump, so its motor is not suitable for generating sufficient vacuum to extract milk from both breasts at the same time. Use Medela’s new Swing Maxi if you express milk regularly and want to try a double electric pump.

This is a nice brand for a pump. I have the medela bra as well so that I don’t have to hold it. The pumps works well, easy to operate and most importantly you can clean it easily.
The electric breast pump by Medela arrived in a branded cardboard box and inside is x1 electric pump with a strap (called the Solo pump), x1 hands free collection cup already set up for use, x1 connecting tube, x1 USB-C charging cable, x1 UK plug with USB-A port for the supplied charging cable and a comprehensive user manual which is definitely worth giving a read. The pump is relatively compact and is lightweight weighing only 76g.
The pump itself is white in colour (although it is grey on the back) and the collection cup is transparent. The transparent collection cup allows you to place your nipple correctly and monitor the milk level expressed. Since the collection cup also has the measurements embossed into the cup it is easy to read the output volume after use.
There are four buttons on the electric pump including an on/off button, a mode button (which switches between stimulation mode to be used at the beginning and expression mode after the initial stimulation which recreates a baby sucking) and a button each for + and – to increase and decrease the suction level. The buttons are easy to operate and simple to understand.
The main feature of this breast pump is that because the electric pump is rechargeable and the collection cup fits perfectly into a nursing bra the set is hands free meaning that you can multitask whilst you pump, offering flexibility when you are likely to need it! The breast pump has a good anatomical designed which fits against the breast comfortably with a 24mm flange and I’ve found that it expresses milk well. I found the collection cup very comfortable to use with the soft, food grade silicone material and the collection cup is relatively discreet.
The collection cup is well thought through as it is easy to pour the milk into storage bags or bottles and it is easy to pull apart to clean disassembling into 3 parts which are suitable to clean in the dishwasher. The cup also has the ability to stand by itself which a very useful design feature and you don’t have to worry about milk spills. The collection cup can hold 150ml of milk and it is both efficient and leak free. The tube connection into the collection cup can be inserted either way to make it easy to pump each breast and trail the tube appropriately.
I think that the pump system is fairly quiet, doesn’t cause pain and is very convenient. The electric pump charges reasonably quickly and can be used a few times before needing a recharge but this is dependent on the settings that you use. There is also an app available called the ‘Medela Family’ app which allows you to input data in order to offer real time tracking as well as information and pumping tips as well. The breast pump seems to only be sold as a single unit and is currently priced at 149.99 at the time of reviewing, which I do think that this is good value for money considering the comfort and convenience of the pump.
I ordered the Medela Solo Hands-Free Breast Pump | Compact and Intuitive Single Electric Breast Pump.
This hands free breast pump is a game changer! Gone are the days of being restricted to a plugged breast pump. This is great as you can still get on with the things you need to do whilst pumping milk. I heard great things about medela and I wasn’t disappointed!
At the time of reviewing this product was priced at 149.99.
I would recommend this product.
one of the best pumps I’ve tried, suction is very good, it sits comfortably and so easy to use and clean, different modes makes it easy to find what suits you and your body.
This is a very good breast pump that works effectively. Medela is a well known brand for their breast feeding products so you know you are getting a quality product. It is very easy to set up and use and it lasts a long time before needing charging. The suction is good and easy to clean after use.
This breast pump is as light as a feather and has a good quality rechargeable battery with long lasting power , it’s also super lightweight and ergonomically well designed with really easy to use buttons that are large and set out really simple to use so it’s designed to be super easy to use and clean , saving you time and effort and enabling busy parents to be able to multitask safely with the hands free design.
It’s a very good quality pump that is simple to use and clean, with a clever transparent design, enables hands free operation and at 76g is very lightweight, a top quality device making life easier for busy parents.
This is a really great product. I got this for a friend who just had a baby and she absolutely loved it. It was very easy to assemble and use. Fits nicely in the bra and is lightweight too. Hands free collection has made it so much simpler and easier. Battery lasts for a good amount of time. Love the fact that cleaning the pump is quite easy and straightforward.
Only minor issue is that the suction could have been a bit better.
Overall, my friend did say that this pump has made her life so much easier and the pump is good.
Hope you find this review helpful.
Medela hands free breast pump makes expressing milk much easier and can be used anywhere. The pump is discreet and fits snugly into the bra. I like how it’s clear so you can check it’s positioned currently. Also so you can see how full it is. There is an app you can use to track how much milk you’re expressed and also gives useful tips and information. The pump is easy to clean with warm soapy water. The control is easy to use and fits into the palm of your hand easily. The pump is fairly quiet and doesn’t distract you. It’s comfy to wear and you can carry on with daily activities whilst using this which is si useful. Great quality and worth the price.
The price increase to a hands-free model definitely pays for itself as a twin mum. My twin 1 struggles to latch whilst twin 2 has no issue. This allows me to feed one of my girls whilst pumping milk for the other, helping to maintain my flow.
As the device is portable I can also pump on the move around the house so I’m not confined to a chair.
Comfortable to use and must be prestigious as I used the same brand whilst in the maternity ward.
I adore this company and I can say for sure that these are the best breast pumps available on the market. Initially, when I didn’t know which company to choose, I tried many different types and forms. Mostly they were uncomfortable, it was painful and unpleasant, it got to the point that I cried before every feeding of my baby. That was until I tried a Medela breast pump. I had a Medela Swing and it was amazing! A completely different level, there was no unpleasant feeling, no pain or skin irritation. Everything happened smoothly and didn’t cause discomfort. The only thing i didn’t like was that I had to hold the pump all the time and it was terribly annoying. I am very glad that this company has a pump like this. You can simply put it in your bra. Incredibly easy to clean! It disassembles in a second and you can put it all in the sterilizer. Thick plastic, wide 24mm funnel, excellent shape and only one wire that comes from the base, very lightweight and compact. By the way, the base is a little heavier than the Medela Swing’s.
Yes, this is not a cheap pleasure, but this pump cannot be compared with cheap analogues. Highly recommend! All the products from this company are magical.
I have had my medela solo for a few weeks now and I am so impressed how quiet it is! It’s really improved my night as no wires means I can pump in bed while nursing on the other side and it’s quiet enough not to wake my husband!! It’s really helpful! The flang in this new model also feels more comfortable for me, there’s less parts to sterilise as well so it was a lot easier to keep it clean and ready to go which made it more inviting to use it more often. I am really pleased with this product, it definitely improved a lot compared to older models!!
Easy to set up and use. You get everything included in the box, to be able to use straightaway (after an initial clean). Its really easy to set up, with clear and understandable instructions to follow. Theres even a downloadable app to help you input and track everything. It looks and feels of excellent quality and really well made. The pump unit is fairly compacted and is rechargeable via a usb type c charger, so can be used without the power cable attached, so can be used and taken anywhere with you and charge if needed. It’s fairly quiet when in use, not being a distraction at all. Its comfortable and gentle to use, but very effective. It lightweight and sits close to you, so bearly noticable, youre hands are free and you can multi task whilst expressing. Comes with a 24mm shield; oval shape, wider at the bottom to help maximise milk flow and give support. It will hold 150ml/5oz of milk. Fits the breast well and creates a good seal. Neutral colouring, it looks lovely in design. The control pad is simple with 4 buttons and easy to use. It has 9 pre programmed settings, so you can find the most convenient one for you. Its lightweight, so easy to move around and set up where needed. The perfect starter set for a new mum. Everything is easy to take apart and give a good clean, with no fiddly hard to reach areas, with only the cups that need cleaning and its only 3 parts to clean. Perfect to use anywhere, convenient and rechargeable. Effective and gentle, pain free pumping.
I’ve always loved medela brand and this hasn’t let me down. It is very lightweight which is great to carry around. It is designed to be comfy whatever your bra size. I like how the control is attached to the pump. It has a family app that you can download to track etc. The pump suction is very good and so easy to use.
This is easy to set up and to use. It is quite subtle and can be worn under clothing. It is very effective in use and also comfortable.
Would recommend.
As a well known brand of medela pumps, they have a high expectation of quality and trust. Hands free pumping with anatomically correct to be be comfortable for the wearer, being under 80 grams of weight and small enough to be placed in the bra. Cleaning is a breeze with its three part design, that separates and can be put in the dishwasher for easier cleaning. Also you can download the app to your phone which provides you a personalised tracking routine. The price is at 150 but the comfort and the quality matches the price and will serve you well after child after child.
Medela had been recommended to me by a friend and I was having to give it a go!
I was really impressed! It’s so easy to use and quiet as well. The instructions are easy to follow and the pump itself is easy to use with the controls being simple and easy to remember.
It was comfortable to wear and gentle on the breast and nipples. I really liked it from day one and have been using it without problems for a couple of weeks now.
Worth paying a bit extra for! Exceeding quality.
Anatomically designed to be a comfortable fit whatever your breast shape. This is a really light weight pump at only 76g and is small enough to fit comfortably and privately in the bra. Made of three parts it is really easy to assemble and clean and the best thing for me is that you can put it in the dishwasher. I like the see through design so that you can see what you are doing and that the unit is correctly placed. You can install the Medala family app to provide automatic tracking personalised to you. For its price I feel that this is an advanced and well thought out pump which is both user friendly and extremely comfortable to use.
I have always preferred the Medela pumps and this one is no exception. I’ve owned a Solo with the funnel flange, then opted for the dual handsfree model, but have found that when I pumped both sides at the same time, the suction wasn’t as strong, so always ended up pumping one side at a time for a better output. This one is the best of both worlds, still handsfree but only one side at a time. Also less cables dangling about, a more lightweight control pod and uncompromised suction. So simple to use with the four buttons, you can easily feel the raised symbols so can operate by touch in your pocket. The cable input would also work with the funnel style flange if you also happen to have the cable for that too. The handsfree shell is so simple to clean and put together with only 3 parts. Easily fits into a microwavable sterilisation bag with bottle. The control pod doesn’t have bluetooth but if I’m honest on the dual handsfree one, all it did was log the time of the pumping session, a feature I rarely used as it really didn’t add anything to the tracking data. So I don’t miss the bluetooth on this one. Very quick to charge in a couple of hours and easily lasts multiple pumping sessions. It comes with a 24mm shell. I much prefer the handsfree shell to the funnel flange as it easily slips into the bra and very comfortable to use. I’ve never had a Medela shell leak on me. Once you’re done you can easily tip out the milk from the spout at the top straight into a bottle. The shells also have a flat base so you can stand them up too. The transparency of the shells are very useful during pumping so you can ensure the best fit and gauge a rough idea of how much you’ve expressed. I don’t rely on the volume measurements on the side during a pumping sessions as it won’t give an accurate reading if its not properly upright. It’s a good all rounder and worth the extra money for the handsfree shell for mess free comfort.
Very well presented so a lovely gift for a baby shower. It’s a great way to start your breastfeeding and expressing journey and a really well made, easy to use and easy to clean device which is surprisingly painless too.
my baby has been EBF since birth she’s now 8 months. this pump came with my to college from 1 month Post Partum up till two months ago. it kept my supply up and kept my baby fed easy to use good battery and perfect suction. also easy to sterilise
There is a reason Medela pumps cost more, I have tried four other brands and these are the only ones that work for me! Maybe I am sensitive, but other types are very painful to use even on the lowest settings while the Medela empties my milk without hurting. It’s also quieter than any others I’ve tried. The pump is straightforward to put together, use and clean. The charge only lasts about three pumping sessions (about one hour of pumping), but it recharges quickly.
Also customer service is amazing and my defective pump was replaced quickly, the replacement was delivered within 24 hours of my complaint.
Really liked this pump. It helped me a lot in the first couple of days when my breasts were too hard for baby to latch on. The battery lasts at least 7 pumps of 15-20min. Very easy to take it with me wherever I go. Easy to clean too. Just annoying you have to hold it on your breast the whole time, compared to the rubber collector that keeps itself attached. Overall really good, would recommend.
Initially started renting a hospital grade Medela for the first two weeks after giving birth and moved onto this one at the end of that period. This is a great pump, very efficient, great size and can move around the flat without being tied to wires. Definitely recommend!
Suggest getting the Medela bra too so you don’t have to hold the bottles whilst you pump.
Love it. Does the job. The only thing I would change is the shield nipple size. I am not sure why medela starts from 21 mm while average nipple size is 19mm.. you can get shields from diffent companies that will work with your medela pump
I did a lot of research for the best electric breast pump, this one kept coming up and I can see why. Easy to use, great to maintain, highly recommend.
The item came charged and I took advantage right away by expressing some milk for my newborn. The pump has several modes that make it intuitive and straightforward to plan ahead the milk expressing sessions versus the breastfeeding sessions. The suction caps included in the set are a perfect fit for me and the bottles are suitable for expressing milk during the first weeks after giving birth. What I would love to have is a box or purse for travelling to keep the kit in one place but that’s something I should figure myself.
I love this breast bump, easy to use and simply beautiful!
I haven’t had a chance to use it as I am still pregnant but it’s super easy to set up not too many parts to wash. It is quite and power seems great. Definitely better than my elvis I had
A great pump with good suction and easy to assemble and clean. However the battery lost its life very quickly after purchasing and only using a few times, so sadly returned and bought a hands free elvie instead- not as good suction but much more convenie
I have very little milk so each drop for me is precious. This pump gets at least 10% more milk compare to the one I used in hospital.
Item is okay, suction is not that powerful but still okay to use
This product is great for what it is supposed to do.
My only issue is that wearing both at once is heavy enough and has cause me some upper back pain. It’s hard to sit in a good posture as then the milk fills up in the tubes of the shield.
This wouldn’t put me off the item but just thought I’d mention incase it would discourage anyone else 🙂
Great pump. You can really tell the difference from other pumps. The amount it suctions really differs from other products.
This a great little wireless pump that you can use anywhere you want thanks to the compact size and built in rechargeable battery. It’s a nice easy to use unit but doesn’t have the strongest suction so if you have trouble expressing you might want to look at a more powerful type of pump. If you can express fairly easily then this will be a great pump for you to use.
What an amazing product!
The simple yet effective design that Madela has made, makes this electric pump the most ideal device for breast milk to be produced from a woman’s bosom!
The device was extremely easy to wash, set up, and charge the handheld device which was required to be attached to the pump.
The pump itself has pieces prior to assembly and once assembled you have an air tube which cannot be washed for safety reasons to be connected from the handheld device and the pump. Once this pump is all set up, you lastly require to add the Madela bottle at the bottom of pump.
Once in operation, it has two separate features to which you find it pumping out the breast milk. The first is the “set up pump” as I like to call it, featuring short vibrations with one long, indicating the stimulus of the breast for milk, the second, the expressed pump is designed to enable to continuously encourage the milk to come out into the bottle.
When first used, we managed to pump out 3 fl oz (approx 90ml), which is a major surprise. The battery of the remote (rechargeable) has enough to last approximately 6 milk pumping sessions which is far better than most pumps here on amazon!
We highly recommend that if you were to go for breastfeeding and need to have some available for when it’s at night etc, to use this as this would be a life saver for you. We are certainly glad to have owned it. Very safe to use and not painful at all. Easy to clean and operate thanks to the wireless remote. 5 stars!
Thank you for reading my honest review, I hope you found it helpful! 🙂
We previously tried the manual Medela breast pump and it worked well for the price but having the electric version is so much less effort and a lot quicker to express. Overall build quality is good but like others I do notice a bit of a leaky top on occasions, otherwise it’s one of if not the best we’ve tried and it’s easy to clean which is always a bonus. Would definitely recommend.
My wife has been impressed with this electric breast pump from Medela, In fact, it is their latest iteration – Solo Single breast pump and it is quite a pump indeed.
Medela Breast pumps are a premium product and you can see where the investment has gone into. It’s lightweight, easy to assemble and easy to clean as well.
You can use this breast pump either by battery power or use it from mains power. Both have the same level of power while the mains powered option just limits movement.
It is quiet and works in the background pumping away while freeing your hands, it isn’t actually silent and there is a slight humming. so unless you are in a dead quiet room you will hear the motor pumping away. In your day to day routine with children running around and the TV in the background, you will be hard-pressed to notice it expressing. The other reason for this is the suction cups. They are indeed comfortable.
My only real gripe about this breast pump is that it isn’t discreet. It’s comfortable and effective, but not discreet. The collection bottles literally protrude out like you are being milked, so while it’s portable you can’t really leave the house with them on.
Rival models have designs that can fit breast pumps within your bra thus allowing you to go shopping for instance.
This breast pump doesn’t allow this. But, I guess this pump is designed to give the maximum output and comfort as opposed to aesthetics that are generally not as efficient.
A very good breast pump that does its job well with a no-nonsense attitude.
This is a great little 1 bottle system, it’s easy to use and whilst expressing slower than our previous model this is a more gentle way and seem to work well, it comes included with 1 x Solo motor unit, 1 x USB adapter, 1 x 150ml bottle with lid, 1 x bottle stand, 1 x 24mm PersonalFit Flex breast shield, the bottle stand is also a neat feature and saves accidentally tipping the bottle over, 4 stars from me, really good system.
